ETFs Are Going BATS ? and Why You Should Care!
2012-02-02 17:10:00 The ETF marketplace changed last month. You didn’t notice? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Today I’ll tell you all about it. You already know that “exchange traded funds” trade on an exchange. That’s what distinguishes them from old-fashioned mutual funds. But what exchange trades them, and where is it? For some new iShares, the answer isn’t New York or Chicago. Their trading hub is Lenexa, Kansas. Let me explain … Exchange Floors No Longer Needed Computers bring order to chaos like this. For most people, the term “stock exchange” brings to mind images of noisy rooms filled with men in colorful jackets, waving their arms and making cryptic hand motions. At one time, this is exactly how trading . . . → Read More: ETFs Are Going BATS ? and Why You Should Care!

The Science of Swat: Metal Bats vs. Wood Bats
2011-12-21 21:52:00 No one saw the baseball strike pitcher Brandon Patch's head on a 2003 summer day in Montana. Instead, fans and teammates in attendance only saw Patch fall to the ground, seriously injured. Patch would die four hours later and the beginning of the end of metal baseball bats could be determined as

Houston's Bats a Problem As Astros Score Six in 9th to Beat Cubs
2011-06-01 07:43:00 Darwin Barney (Pam Rodriguez/NSSOM)Through the first seven and a half innings of Tuesday's tilt between the Cubs and Astros, nothing seemed to be happening offensively for either club. The Astros had scored only one run on a solo shot from Brett Wallace, and the Cubs had wasted several opportunities to score, including two lead-off doubles. It looked as though the game would come down to whichever team could hold the opposing offense at bay the longest, but no one could have imagined the insanity that awaited fans in the last inning and a half of the contest. The Cubs got the action started in the bottom of the eighth with their third lead-off double of the night, as Geovany Soto finally...

Google Bats For Copyright Protection
2010-12-03 12:00:00 For long, Google has been poster boy of the ‘free’ internet. But as we all know, there is a fine(and many times non existent) line between free and copyright infringement. For years, this had been the main gripe that a lot of traditional media companies had with Google – that Google was not doing enough to prevent copyright infringement on sites like Youtube and numerous blogs hosted on Blogger. Now, I’m not talking about Freedom of Speech on the Internet, that is another topic for another day. But content, as Google says on its Public Policy Blog, ‘makes us think, laugh, and learn new things‘. The web has enabled several content creators to distribute their work with relative ease, something that would have not been possible a decade ago. Fair enough, but the web also enables ‘illegal’ redistribution of content. And while people may argue, troll, debate whether this is right or wrong. The fact remains, that someone, somewhere is losing money and obvi...

Fungal Disease Killing Bats: This is Bad For You, Bad For Your Pets

Alright I'll say it, why can't we make more at-bats for Ramon Cas
2010-08-09 06:20:00 A fairly easy thing to do, is find pictures on the internet that make Ramon Castro look really fat. For almost this reason alone, I've always supported keeping Ramon as a backup. As much as the second and third tier guys in this league tend to be specialists--players who may be badly flawed in certain areas, the fact that Ramon runs like Ron Karkovice after he's been shot in the stomach seems like explanation enough to not play him regularly. Playing 130 games in a baseball season is an athletic accomplishment, and Ramon Castro is not much of an athlete. Well, actually he's extremely strong, and that deserves acknowledgment. But things like speed, acceleration, agility, etc.; Ramon is in the 20th percentile and under.
White Sox bats can't handle the slider
2010-08-08 21:39:00 For the 2nd time in a week, the White Sox faced a pitcher with a low 90's fastball and a good slider. For the 2nd time in a week, that guy has shut down the White Sox bats almost completely. The new thing here is...the Twins are handling their business, so the Sox's lead in the central is now cut to a miniscule 1/2 game. The front of the Sox's lineup hasn't been wont for hits today. Pierre's hitting streak continues going up, Vizquel has a hit and a good bunt, Rios has a couple of hits including the Sox's only RBI, and Konerko has a hit.The first problem...the sox bats didn't wake up until they got to the Orioles...
Torres bloodied, Sox bats can't touch Bonderman
2010-08-04 03:18:00 Well, I guess one thing we can say about Carlos Torres's game today is that it could have been worse...he could have put up the same line as Porcello earlier today.Carlos Torres got a brief callup spot start tonight to make sure no one has to work on short rest because of the double header. I'm not sure running Harrell out there on short rest wasn't a better move.Torres really was killed by the Tigers lefties in the 2nd inning. After Raburn got off, he faced Avila who doubled in the run. He got the 2nd out in Santiago and Jackson...then Will Rhymes (yeah, THE Will Rhymes) came up, singled from the left side. Damon, doubled. Miggy was walked, and...

2010 Chicago Baseball Primer Part One: The Bats
2010-02-03 05:29:00 Ladies and Gentlemen, it's February. That means two of the greater events on the sports calendar take place in the next few weeks: the Super Bowl, and pitchers and catchers reporting for Spring Training. And with the Bears being... bad... the Super Bowl doesn't mean much this year. As the snow falls and the temperature follows suit, the thought of summer warms the soul. But there have been a lot of changes on Chicago's baseball teams that might require a quick review of, for lack of a better cliche, who's on first. In this, the first part of a two-part series getting re-acquainted with our baseball teams, let's get to know the batters for your Chicago Cubs and White...

(FASEB Journal).
Bats Come Alive Back Home
2009-05-28 00:14:00 The Giants ended a forgettable road trip over the weekend, a trip in which they went just 1-5 and struggled badly to score runs. However, in their two games since returning back to AT&T Park, their offense has come alive. The Giants have scored 12 runs in the first two games of the three game set with Atlanta and won both of the games with ease. In those two contests, the Giants received solid outings from Jonathan Sanchez (who had been struggling a bit) and Tim Lincecum, but it was the offense that really provide the spark the team needed. Travis Ishikawa was likely on the border of being demoted, as he just wasn't producing offensively. However, Ishikawa may have bought himself some more time with a breakout, 4-4 game on Monday night. The Giants 25 year-old first basemen hit his first home run of the season while both driving in and scoring 3 runs. It looks like the promotion of Jesus Guzman definitely lit a fire under Ishikawa but he's not out of the woods yet. He's still j...

Bats Show Up In Spring Opener
2009-02-25 23:52:00 The big question coming into the spring was whether or not the Giants were going to score enough runs to match-up with their brilliant starting pitching. They certainly displayed enough in Wednesday's Cactus League opener against the Indians.Travis Ishikawa headlined the day as he hit two impressive home runs and went 3-3 overall with 4 RBI. Ishikawa's first shot was a majestic home run that bounced on top of the roofing in right-field then out of the complex. His second jack was more of a line drive shot and left the yard in about 3.5 seconds. Oh yeah, he all also added an RBI single in there as well. With the Giants recently passing on Joe Crede, it means that Ishikawa will get a real look at first base this spring and the 25 year-old looks ready. The Indian's broadcasting crew was mentioning just how sweet Ishikawa's swing looked and I absolutely concur. The kid looked really balanced today and swung at pitches in the strike zone. If he keeps that up, not only will he win the...

Bats In Austin Texas
2008-06-08 08:20:00 One of the most unique and celebrated attractions in Austin is a naturally occurring phenomenon and costs absolutely nothing to enjoy. The 1.5 million Mexican Free-tailed bats that live under the Congress Street Bridge from March to October emerge at dusk in a breathtaking display. This nightly (almost) occurrence can be viewed in a number of different ways, and is the kind of event that makes living in or visiting Austin so memorable. Bats are much maligned and misunderstood in society. Often associated with vampires, belfries, and bad hair days, the bat holds a mystique of fright, and is tragically misunderstood. Although bats, like any other mammal, can carry rabies, and no one should ever touch a bat in nature, bats are an important part of our ecological system. According to Bat Conservation International, the Austin bats eat up to 20,000 pounds of insects every night! Austinâs bats migrate every spring from Mexico, and have made their home under the Congress Street Brid...

Lack of quality the reason for more broken bats?
2008-06-03 13:09:00 With a rash of shattered maple bats stirring safety concerns within baseball, the most prominent manufacturer said today that the problem might rest more with how the bats are made than with the wood. "I see a lack of quality," said Sam Holman, inventor of the "Sam Bat" popularized by Barry Bonds. The broken-bat crisis spurred owners and players to set a June 24 safety committee meeting. Among reforms expected to be discussed are a ban of maple bats, thickening the handles of all bats to make them less prone to breakage and extending protective netting to keep bat fragments from spinning into the stands. Holman said he has not been invited to the meeting but would welcome the chance to discuss the issue with baseball officials. Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said he expected the committee to consult with bat manufacturers before making recommendations. In April, a jagged piece of a broken bat slammed into the cheek of Pittsburgh Pirates hitting coach Don Long. He pitched six innings in which he allowed two runs, on seven hits and one walk, his ERA is 2.29.The outfield, I discussed early tonight provided most of the offense. Aguila, Pascucci and Feliciano combined for eigh hits and three RBIs, three of the hits were doubles and one was a homerun.Robinson Cancel went 2-5 with a two run triple and three RBIs.

Indy Leaguer Swapped For 10 Bats
2008-05-24 10:59:00 Okay, so this has nothing to do with the major league trade market, but it's a slow morning, and it's kind of entertaining. John Odom was the 44th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2003. After three unimpressive seasons -- which seem to involve some injury -- he was released this spring. He latched on with the Calgary Vipers, and independent league team. And then he was traded to the Laredo Broncos for 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats. The story actually isn't that straight foward, though. Canada wouldn't let him into the country because of a criminal record. He was in a fight as a 17-year-old, and thought the matter was expunged. So instead of continuing to work to get Odom across the border, the Vipers shipped him to Laredo The real sting is that the original deal involved "Laredo's best hitter," but the hitter refused to move to Canada. Things run a bit differently in the independent leagues. And so the bats deal was concocted. Still, it would have been much more entert...
