"I see a lack of quality," said Sam Holman, inventor of the "Sam Bat" popularized by Barry Bonds. The broken-bat crisis spurred owners and players to set a June 24 safety committee meeting. Among reforms expected to be discussed are a ban of maple bats, thickening the handles of all bats to make them less prone to breakage and extending protective netting to keep bat fragments from spinning into the stands.
