Kristen Frantzen Orr Glass Beads
2008-05-13 14:12:00
Kristen Frantzen Orr's handmade glass beads blend her love of nature with her background as a watercolor artist. A single bead can take hours to make, because she sculpts with molten glass over the flame of an oxygen-propane torch. To add detail to her work, she makes special canes from multiple colors of glass. By combining these components with layers of transparent colors, she creates depth and captures an exciting play of light.Examples of her work:After the beads have been annealed in a kiln to remove any internal stress, Kristen blends them into unique jewelry designs. This process, she says, is like framing a painting, by giving the beads a beautiful setting. For some of her pieces, she crochets spheres of fine silver, copper, or niobium wire. By stringing tiny seed beads onto the wire, she creates beaded-crocheted wire beads that resemble granulated gold.Kristen's work is in collections throughout the U.S., and in Japan, England, South Africa, and Australia. Her work has b...
The Hunt for Czech Glass Beads
2008-05-12 13:09:00
The Lone Beader is now back in Boston, MA - safe and sound. I really missed everyone, and I enjoyed reading all your comments. It was a long three weeks, but it sure went by quickly! I spent the first two weeks of my holiday in Prague, Czech Republic, and I made a quick stop in London, England on the way home. Prague is a beautiful city - probably the most mystical I've seen thus far, and its history is dark and intriguing. I can't wait to share with you all of my photos... My main reason for traveling to the Czech Republic was to learn a little more about the making of glass beads, as well as to search for some to bring home. After a few days of general sightseeing, I went out to search for beads.Above is a photo of the first shop I found located on Ujezd in Mala Strana. This shop sells a few lampworked beads, as well as seed beads, but it is really a beaded jewelry store. I enjoyed looking around here, but it really wasn't what I was looking for...The next day, I took a bus tr...

Flight of the Seed Beads
2008-04-20 10:00:00
Two years of blogging is hard work! I need a vacation! So, today, I'm headed to Prague, Czech Republic. Prague, or Praha, is a city I've always wanted to visit ever since I saw that INXS video. And, when I heard they made beads there, I knew I had to go.... So, all day yesterday, I did a little preparing for my trip. One thing I was thinking about was bringing some beadwork with me to do on the flight or in the hotel. I have packed beads to go before, but usually only on road trips. I read Jean Campbell's Tips For Beading on Vacation, and was amazed at all the different ideas people had. I'm actually amazed at how many people bring beadwork to do on vacation. It seems there's so much sightseeing to do and beer to drink - when would there ever be time??I thought about this, then I remembered Celticat. I thought, if she can make beaded dolls on the NYC subway, I can try this, too! I'm going to be away for 3 weeks, and that's a long time to go without doing any beadwork. I can'...

Sugar Beads
2008-04-01 14:10:00
I once thought Polymer Clay wasn't a medium for real jewelry designers. It was for stay-at-home moms who wanted a material they could play around with, to make a cute little ladybug charm or whatever, and throw it in their kitchen oven to bake. A few projects to break the monotony of being at home all the time, that would give them something to talk about and show to their friends. Boy, have I proved myself wrong! I have seen beads and jewelry that I NEVER would have dreamed could be made using polymer clay. Seafoam Blue Green Polymer Clay Sugar Beads Polymer Clay Sugar Beads Today I discovered sugar beads, and I found two methods of making them - one using teeny tiny micro beads, and the other using frit. Both begin as a polymer clay bead that is then rolled in the beads or the frit. Both are beautiful, but I like the micro bead version because it gives a more uniform shape. These are the modern version of vintage beads that were made of glass or Lucite. Each bead is formed...

Turquoise beads are the very popular gemstones in the world. It is a beautiful blue-green stone that never goes out of fashion. It can turn any piece of jewelry into a masterpiece with its colors ranging from apple green to royal blue. These beads are popular for their versatility that they provide in its design and make the jewelry design an appealing one. If you want to create a popular and a trendy jewelry design, turquoise would be the right choice for you as it is in fashion for thousands of years. No matter, whatever the season is, turquoise remains the fashionable stone for years together. It is a very soft stone as compared to the other stones. So, take care that you don’t drop the turquoise stone even on the carpet. It can shatter and get chipped. The turquoise beads should not be stored with harder materials that will cause scratches or scraps in the beads. The bet way to store turquoise is to hang it. Turquoise is a stone that can be beaded even by an inexperienced bead...
How to make a necklace of beads
2008-03-27 16:28:00
Style is a matter of fashion that no one can compete. It depends upon individual tastes and preferences. If you want to take something unique by cutting own the heavy costs, you can make your jewelry at home. For this you will need different types of pearls and beads. The pearls band the beads can be selected depending on your choice. The pearls will add shimmer to your necklace; whereas the beads will bring about a little sparkle. Take a wire of 9” in length and thread it with a needle on one of its side. Start stringing four beads of 3mm by alternating them with three delicacies. The necklace should begin and end with the 3mm bead. Don’t forget to string the pendant of your choice at the center. Start with the 3mm bead for creating a loop at the pendant. The next step is to go through the beads again for tightening the wire by pulling the snug beads. Then it’s time to tie both the ends together using a surgeon’s knot and finally glue them. Again add few beads to the neckla...
Tiger’s eye beads
2008-03-26 17:38:00
The tiger’s eye beads are microcrystalline quartz’s that have the crystals which can be seen only under a microscope. These beads derived its name as tiger’s eye because they have a clear resemblance to the eyes of the tiger. The color of these beads mostly ranges from golden to honey yellow and they seem to dance in the light. These beads also have medicinal significance. It is used to aid the purification of blood, treat the ulcers and stubbornness. You will find the tiger’s eye beads in the countries like India, South Africa, California, Sri Lanka and Western Australia. Store the tiger’s eye beads in a stable temperature and do not let it to come in contact with alcohol. There are two types of tiger’s beads: one is the Red Tiger’s Eye. The oxidation of the iron changes the color of the beads in this case and the other one is the Blue Tiger’s Eye. This is usually grey colored having diverse blues that is stripes all over. The tigers eye beads are available on temp...

2008-02-28 03:30:00
The archaeology department excavated several burial grounds of Sri Lanka some of which were tentatively dated to 1000 BC (Ibbankatuwa) and some were dated even earlier than that. In most of these sites many verities of gems (polished as it is) and number of varieties of gem beads were unearthed. These are believed to be the jewellery worn at the time.

Inside Out Beads
2008-02-19 15:41:00
Great Design Idea: Silver-Core Focal Beads These beads have been designed to be worn with the Silver Core prominently visible. The openings of the silver cores inside the beads come in small, medium, and large. Small for a simple chain, medium for a larger necklace, and large for a very heavy necklace. The concept is simple, but not so easy to explain. So, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Candy Egg Bead Pendant This Candy Egg focal bead has a large Silver-Core opening, and looks great as a slider pendant on a thicker chain. Can't get much easier than that. Anybody can do this stuff! Bracelet Beads I think these are the best of the bunch! What easier way could there be to make a bold and colorful bracelet? Simple Silver-core Bead Bracelet These beads are the smallest beads - approximately 14.5mm - 15.5mm in diameter. They have a silver core which is 4.3mm inside diameter. The beads can be added to the bracelet singly or in groups with sterling silver spacers....

People Go Nuts For Marisa Miller's Beads In Sports Illustrated
2008-02-13 17:00:00
Everyone's having a mental heart attack over the new Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. We're guessing it's because Marisa Miller is essentially topless on the cover (unless you count those strategically-placed turquoise beads). Danica Patrick, Heidi Klum, and Will Ferrell (random, right?) are also in this issue, although not many people seem to be talking about that part of it.
Boring Beads

(click to enlarge)Funny. Before I took the above photo, those two shades of shell-coloured size 11 seed beads looked almost exactly the same! The darker colour is Shell, and the lighter colour is Matte Opaque Dark Cream. The camera flash can work wonders, sometimes - can you see the difference?? If I ever finish beading this section of my beaded Beatles Yellow Submarine, I'll probably layer the darker shade of beads to help differentiate between the two. Of course, I'll probably run out of beads before that. After I become completely bored of beading the same colour for hours upon hours... :0

My Lovely Beads

Zoya Gutina: Jewelry Designer Zoya at My Lovely Beads works with seed beads, but she also creates designer gemstone jewelry, and much of her work is a combination of the two. She is well-known for her intricate designs using tiny seed beads. In 2007, she won first place in the Rings & Things Design Contest in the Glass category for her design, Aquamarine Morning and Amethyst Night Necklace. This necklace perfectly illustrates the way she uses seed beads and gemstones in the same design: Amber Lace Necklace Seed beads and Amber gemstones This is one of Zoya's gemstone creations. Czech Glass Beads
2008-01-22 15:23:00
Czech pressed glass beads are made in the Czech Republic the traditional way, by pressing hot glass into a heated mold. The 19th century was a period of industrial innovation, and new machines that could produce a wide variety of beads were developed. This meant that thousands of identical beads could be turned out quickly and inexpensively, but the process of making the molds was difficult. Cottage crafters were given several molds for each bead press, and turned out beads to order for their local factory. The Czechs became the masters of pressed glass. Most of this work is still done in rural areas with small family-operated factories. Glass finishes are added in the final step, many of the luster coatings are made with heated metals including gold. Czech Glass Leaf Beads Thick rods of glass are heated to molten and fed into a machine that stamps the glass, including a needle that pierces a hole. The beads again are rolled in hot sand to remove flashing and soften seam lines....
Humble Beads
2008-01-20 19:35:00
This post began with researching art beads, but then I found Humble Beads by Heather Powers. And I fell in love with this lady's beads. I know there are lots of beads out there in the marketplace, but I think these beads are exceptional. The Colors The interplay of colors speaks to my artsy side. And why wouldn't they? Many of them are inspired by impressionist paintings. The colors of the beads coordinate and complement each other beautifully. Art Inspired Beads Beads that take their inspiration from Heather's favorite painters and designers. All beads are handcrafted from polymer clay and buffed to a matte finish. Monet's Garden Bead Inspired by watery hues and brush strokes of Monet's water lily paintings. This bead can be made into a cuff bracelet or a pendant. Each one is a unique mini-masterpiece. Greek Ceramic Washer Beads from Mykonos

One of my farvorite new finds of this past year are the washer type beads made of high fired ceramic from Mykonos Island, Greece. These kiln-fired, dyed terra cotta beads often have the look of wood, metal, or stone. The best part are the large holes...great to fit that 12 gauge wire or leather cord. My first purchase was a little packet of 8mm and 13mm washers. I made a few items and fell in love. I bought a bunch and just had to share them with others. I have just added other colors, shapes and sizes to my Etsy page. You can buy nuggets, donuts, gears and washers. I have others in my stash that I have yet to photograph and put up on Etsy. If I ever have handcrafted jewelry making supply finds that I feel I have to share with others I will always put them up on my Etsy site tekaandzoe.etsy.com not to confused my handcrafted jewelry customers with my jewelry site http://tekaandzoe.com/.

How to Make Knots between Beads
2008-01-14 13:31:00
The reason you should tie knots between your beads is so that these beads won’t be in contact with each other. Plus, with knots, it just adds to the length and you can save the amount of beads that you need. It also makes your necklace looks more nicely instead of being stiff and inflexible. Another reason is if your necklace or bracelet breaks, you won’t have your beads falling off flying all
Cloisonné Beads
2008-01-13 22:52:00
Cloisonné is a distinctive art form that was developed in China in the 13th century, and it has grown to be one of China's number one exports. The making of cloisonné requires several processes: hammering, wire inlay, soldering, enamel-filling, enamel-firing, polishing, and gilding. The wire work in Cloisonné beads can be flush with the enamel or it can be raised to create a 3-dimensional look. The wire can also be twisted to add more interest. Round Light Blue Butterfly Cloisonné Bead Cloisonné beads are created by soldering thin metal wire partitions to a base bead to act as a color separator. A powdered colored glass paste is then painted between the partitions. After a firing and polishing process, the bead is electroplated with a gold or silver film, and a beautiful bead is born. Oval Blue/Pink/Yellow Flower Cloisonné Bead The Process The artist forms delicate strips of metal-copper, bronze, or silver-to create a design. The bends are all done at right angles, so the w...

All Beads go to Heaven
2007-12-27 16:37:00
This morning, I looked through my box of old projects from when I first began beading. There, I found these two French-beaded roses. I think I made them about 4 or 5 years ago. Even though they took me a long time to make, I put them in the box because they weren't really perfect in my eyes. I used Chinese seed beads, silver wire instead of red, and I wrapped the stems with sticky floral tape instead of embroidery floss. But, they are still beautiful, and should never be forgotten. These flowers have finally found a purpose. Yesterday, my union brother George passed away unexpectedly. His heart failed at the young age of 51. I worked with George in the rock-n-roll business for a very long time. One thing I will always remember is that he was very supportive of music and the arts, and every time I saw him, he asked about my beadwork. He encouraged me to pursue it, and he told me to show my artwork whenever possible. George was also one of the first people to ever comment on this blog...
