Dow and S&P in Bear Market?
2008-07-03 03:18:00 Original post on The Sun's Financial Diary Dow and S&P in Bear Market? Yesterday, we saw the Dow made a 276-point turnaround to close the trading session with a gain of 38 points. What fueled the rally was the surprising June sales number from GM. And the turnaround actually made people speculate that the second half of ...

Bear market started and finished by Bear Stearns?
2008-03-17 18:36:00 Bear Stearns came last summer as a first on surface with problems related to risky loans. In fact issues with Bear's hedge funds have started credit market turmoil. And these days this company is just history, traded for fraction of its price one year ago.Today company has earnings call. Also other big brokerages are releasing results this week like Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley. What is interesting that up to now Bear Stearns hasn't declared such a huge writedowns as e.g. Merryll Lynch did.(see total writedowns due to subprime...)After this I am bit afraid from numbers coming this week. Of course someone can say BSC doesn't have such a diversification like others but still who would expect one week ago this collapse for one of the biggest financial company.Related tickers: (BSC), (GS), (LEH), (MS), (XLF), (IYF),http://stockweb.blogspot.-com/atom.xml
A Different Kind of Bear Market
2008-03-17 12:51:00 I'm sure this wasn't what Bear Stearns shareholders were worried about when they considered what might happen to them in a bear market. The investment firm, whose stock closd above $57 last Thursday, was purchased by JP Morgan Chase over the weekend for the whopping total of $2 a share (in JP Morgan stock, no less) as the growing lending crisis threatened to make Bear Stearns the Enron of the financial world. Bear Stearns was heavily exposed to losses from bad mortgage loans, and faced a serious liquidity crisis over the weekend. Had the company declared bankruptcy it would certainly have set off a ripple effect through the financial world, as other lenders who were owed money by Bear Stearns would have to basically write off those debts.

T. Rowe Price Int'l Bond: Bear market beater
2008-03-17 06:00:00 "The credit crunch is spreading through the economy," says Jim Powell (ccount/click.php?id=1839) in Global Changes & Opportunities Report (ccount/click.php?id=1839), who now advises adding some "foreign equivalents." "The problem isn’t a shortage of capital. Despite the losses, the world is still swimming in cash. However, most lenders no longer have enough confidence in our country’s credit system to take additional chances with their money."The more I look at the problems we face, the more I realize that few solutions will be possible until business and public confidence in America is restored. Unfortunately, I don’t see anything on the horizon that makes me think the situation will change for the better anytime soon."If you have bonds, consider trading at least some of them for their foreign equivalents. Baseball’s Bear Market?
2008-01-22 13:00:00 If you’ve read a newspaper lately, or listened to any of the presidential candidates talk, you’re probably aware that the U.S. economy is in a bit of trouble. To hear some tell it, we’re headed for a financial Armageddon. Being realistic, much of this is being driven by politics, as every candidate says he or she has the solution to all our problems. Our economy certainly has some issues right now, and our monetary system is an outright disaster. But if we do hit a recession (or are already in one), it should be milder than most would have you believe. Either way, Major League Baseball will almost certainly be hit by this slowdown. In fact, we wrote about this before, suggesting that teams should factor a possible economic downturn into their 2008 budgets. (more…)

All Signs Point To A Recession
2007-12-19 16:55:00 The index of leading economic indicators fell for the third time in four months in November, signaling an increasing risk of a U.S. recession. The deepest housing slump in 16 years is likely to worsen as foreclosures mount and banks restrict lending, economists said. Declining property values and rising energy costs may also hurt consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy. The economy is projected to grow at a 1 percent annual rate this quarter and at a 1.5 percent pace in the first three months of 2008.Jobs ReportMore people signed up for unemployment benefits last week, suggesting that the job market is softening as the economy loses speed. More Trouble Ahead For Financials
2007-12-13 02:21:00 Bank of America said its provisions against loan losses would come to $3.3 billion in the fourth quarter amid deterioration in consumer real estate and small business loans. Bank of America's capital ratios continue to decline, and the bank may not resume stock buybacks until 2009. Wachovia, the fifth-largest U.S. bank by market value, said that the Charlotte, N.C., bank is bracing for mounting loan defaults and another round of losses tied to risky mortgage investments. Wachovia, estimated that its provision for loan losses will be about $1 billion more than its charge-offs. Its previous forecast was between $500 million and $600 million. Meanwhile, the bank said its market-related losses -- including those stemming from mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations -- are on pace to exceed the third quarter's. Wachovia's losses on its exposure to collateralized debt obligations and other assets were about $1.4 billion in October and November, compared with ar...

Make Money in a Bear Market
2007-12-06 19:42:00 The economy looks ugly, and the stock market seems poised to fall off a cliff. My suggestion: Cheer up. For most of you, a bear market is a blessing, not a bane.I'm not kidding. If you're retired and you live off of your investments, a bear market is really bad news. That's why retirees should have enough in bonds and cash to support themselves through stock-market downturns. But most of us don't need to dip into our investments to pay the bills for years to come. And if you fit into that category -- someone who is still accumulating money for retirement, to pay for your kid's college education or for any other goal -- a bear market can work wonders for your wealth. Here's why: When the stock market craters, the money you invest buys more shares of stock. So you're actually building up more equity during a bear market than when the market is soaring. Take the 2000-2002 bear market. As measured by the broad-based Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 stock index, the market plunged a ha...
Will Beazer Survive ?
2007-11-28 07:01:00 Beazer Homes (BZH) CEO Ian McCarthy anticipates 2008 to be another difficult year. He says the Atlanta-based builder is focused on managing issues that have surfaced over the past few months, such as a recent financial restatement and an internal investigation concerning compliance. The company also is installing a downturn management plan that will focus on cash savings across the board.Beazer's latest battle plans were announced today. The company also revealed some of its fourth-quarter results. Beazer is in a restatement period until May 15, 2008, so the quarterly results were incomplete. The most telling figure from the report was the cancellation rate, which logged in at a stunning 68 percent.Leslie Kratcoski, Beazer's vice president, says that "headline issues" had a significant impact on the percentage. Federal, internal, and local investigations, top executive firings, default notices, and heavy losses have kept the builder mired in controversy this year. And McCarthy say...

2007-11-17 00:00:00 A bear market is when the stock market falls for an extended period of time. The fall is usually around 20% and is the opposite of a bull market. Is Increased Volatility a Sign of a Bear Market?
2007-11-14 18:53:00 There are some who argue that the increase in volatility is a sign of a market top, implying that we may be entering a bear market. So, to see if this is in fact the case, Bespoke Investment Group did a little research. Bespoke went back to 1945 and charted the total number of days where the S&P 500 moved 2%. They then overlayed the chart with gray bars where there was a bear market(defined as a 20% decline on a closing basis in the S&P 500). As a result of their research they found that the increase in volatility does not directly corr
Financials Entered A Bear Market... Opportunity Elsewhere
2007-11-08 20:48:00 Financial stocks in the Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) traded at a high of 38 in June of 07. They currently trade just below 30. That is a 21% decline... which is a bear market for this segment of the economy. The debate that the investment public is having about the financial turmoil is whether or not subprime/credit/lending/insurin-g/banking spills over. One day, major benchmarks are within striking distance of 52-week highs. The next? Monstrous sell-offs. Most corporations... outside of finance, real estate and auto... have been remarkably successful. Oil services, infrastructure stocks, alt energy, technology, aerospace -- they've been huge winners. Even more compelling has been the global growth story. Outside of the banks, in fact, the world keeps marching on. The iShares S&P Europe 350 Index (IEV) is up 15%+ in 2007, while the iShares MSCI Asia Pacific ex-Japan (EPP) has tacked on gyyy-normous 36%. The rewards abroad have not come without significant risks...

Bear market signal: Coppock curve and killer waves
2007-08-02 19:27:00 When the Dow recently hit its record high, Jim Stack was not impressed. Rather, he warned, “We are moving to a full bear market defensive mode.” Here’s the latest outlook from his InvesTech Market Analyst – uncannily written just before last week’s decline – in which he warns of a rare “killer wave” signal from the Coppock Curve, an 50-year old technical indicator that helped him exit the market in 2000. “When the DJIA scores a new record high, yet there are twice as many stocks closing down for the day (as the number closing up), then something is wrong. Declining stocks overwhelmed advancing stocks by a 2:1 margin, an ominous divergence that has never occurred in the past 75 years of market history “When the DJIA closes higher in 7 out of 8 days, but breadth is positive (advancing stocks outnumber declining stocks) on only 1 of those days, then something is wrong. That ‘wrong’ confirms that fewer stocks are p...

Understanding the Bear Market Psychology of the Investor
2007-07-10 15:07:00 Interesting read for those thinking of going against the flow.... :)=============================-=========By Jeff NealWith the Dow and the Standards and Poor's 500 doing quite well, it is important for the investor to take a close look on just how to start playing some defense. More often than not, when the market is experiencing a period of extreme optimism or pessimism, it is time to play contrarian and look to move against the crowd. The current optimism has the average U.S. equity currently selling for around 19 times trailing earnings, which is higher than the average. However, high P/E ratios do not necessarily indicate a bear market is ahead. In fact, with interest rates and inflation relatively low, a higher than average earnings ratio is exactly what should be anticipated. It is essential to note though that the current bull market was started around early October 2002 when the Standards and Poor's 500 was around the 780 mark. Since then, the market has been a robust bull m...

The Art of Making Money in the Bear Market
2007-03-27 05:28:00 In the bull market most of us makes money, and in the bear market most of us loses money. Wouldn't it be nice to change that, and make money in the bear market. With the advanced investing technique called short selling, it is possible. However the concept of short selling doesnt come easy to everyone. In general, people think of investing as buying an asset, holding it while it appreciates in value, and then eventually selling to make a profit. Shorting is the exact opposite where you make money when the asset falls in value. The return rates can be high from short selling, but its comes with the added high risk. The Basics of Short SellingWhen you sell a stock (say X number), that you do not own, but are promised to be delivered in future, it is called Short Selling. So how can you sell a stock you do not own ? Basically your broker will lend it to you. Sooner or later you must buy back the same X number of stocks (covering) and return them back to your broker. When you buy back t...

Reader Question: What to Do if a Bear Market is Coming?
2007-03-09 06:47:02 The recent market plunge has generated quite some debate among PF bloggers what we should do (if we should do anything at all) with our investments in the event that major indexes lost 5% in just a couple of days: Should we see it as a buying opportunity? Should we re-evaluate our investment strategy? Or should we simply do nothing? If you ask me, I would say it was nothing but a buying opportunity if you already have something on your mind and just wait for the right time to enter (I bought 70 shares of VBR the day after the sell-off); otherwise, I won’t do anything special. 500 some points drop in one day is big. But if you put it into the perspective of long-term investment, a short-term decline, even at the 5% magnitude, is probably nothing and, therefore, doesn’t warrant a upside-down overhaul of a portfolio. Yesterday, I received an email from a reader that brought up the question of what to do if a bear marketing is coming (Greenspan saw a 33.3% chance for a r... |
