Bearish bets: Inverse ETFs
2008-07-08 05:00:00 "We see the growing risk of a watershed decline very soon," warns Martin Weiss (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2166) in his Safe Money Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2166). Here, he looks at several inverse ETFs which benefit from a drop in stocks."With a new, potentially bigger wave of the credit crisis sweeping Wall Street, and with the latest energy price surge gutting corporate profits, the U.S. stock market is poised to suffer a far sharper and deeper decline."Our near-term forecast: A rapid fall — perhaps including a crash — to the market's 2003 lows: 7200 on the Dow, 770 in the S&P 500 Index, and 1100 in the Nasdaq Composite Index. "That's too much, too fast for you to just 'ride it out' as many on Wall Street are recommending. oreover, it's too soon to say if those levels will be the final bottom; the market could fall even further. "With the exception of of selected resource companies,...

Bearish Engulfing Pattern
2008-05-23 07:41:00 A chart pattern that consists of a small white candlestick with short shadows or tails followed by a large black candlestick that eclipses or "engulfs" the small white one. As implied by its name, a bearish engulfing pattern may provide an indication of a future bearish trend. This type of pattern usually accompanies an uptrend in a security, possibly signaling a peak or slowdown in its advancement. However, whenever a trader analyzes any candlestick pattern, it's important for him or her, before making any decisions, to consider the prices of the days that precede and follow the formation of the pattern.Lets take a look at few current charts to predict future movement.Cardiome Pharma Corp. (CRME) is a drug research and development company focused on developing drugs to treat or prevent cardiovascular diseases. Bearish engulfing pattern is formed on this stock today. Bearish on commerical real estate
2008-04-03 07:00:00 "Commerical real estate is the next sector to fall," says Martin Weiss (ccount/click.php?id=1891) in the "Mr. Speculator" column of hs Safe Money Report (ccount/click.php?id=1891). Here's his his top ETF to play this expected trend."As their counterparts in the residential bussines did in the housing sector, commercial real estate developers borrowed too much money using aggressive loans. They factored in excessively optimistic projections for rent growth. "They also assumed vacancy rates would forever hug their historic lows. But with the economy slumping and many new subdivisions turning into overnight ghost towns, the immediate result has been near-empty strip malls, vacant store fronts and deserted office parks."Companies that own commercial real estate are on the ropes, as the value of those properties begins to fall. Moody’s is projecting a 15% to 20% drop over the next few years, and we feel that’s understating the speed and depth of the decline."Companies th...

77% of market pros bearish on real estate
2008-03-31 00:00:00 Russell Investments quarterly survey of money managers finds just 8% bullish on real estate investment trusts vs. 10% in the previous quarter while 77% of the money pros polled were bearish on commercial property-owning REITs. That’s equal with three months earlier. To be fair, this stock-heavy group aren’t huge fans of REITs. Bullishness for REITs peaked at 19% in the second quarter of 2005. As for the overall stock market, 42% of money managers polled believe markets to be undervalued vs. 34% in the fourth quarter of 2007 and double where it was in the second quarter of 2007. Says Erik Ristuben of Russell: “Despite being beaten, battered and bowed, investment managers remain unbroken … Managers are resilient in their belief that government action will revive the economy, that U.S. equities have room to grow, and that equity performance will reclaim positive territory in 2008.”

Bear Stearns Bearish, Baring Bare Backside of Unbearable Heaviness of Beari
2008-03-17 17:18:00 Here's what the Federal Reserve had to decide over the weekend: Let the U.S. markets go into a free fall, like the demoed twin towers of the World Trade Center (and WTC7), or lend ginormous sums of money—that it does not possess because of the $225 Million U.S. per day expense of the war against Iraq—to keep Bear Stearns afloat on the ice floe that's melting due to global warming. (Did I include every deadly sin of the current administration in one question? Nah—I left out illegal spying on private citizens and the overall destruction of the U.S. Constitution. Oh, yeah, and failure to rescue the people of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.) So the Fed opts to loan $30 Billion of credit dollars—not available dollars—to JP Morgan so it can acquire Bear Stearns, so it can avoid sinking into the already gurgling slushy waters of the U.S.-led world economy impending disaster. This reminds me of the brave little Dutch tyke who stuck his finger in the dike to prevent a deluge...

Bearish bets: Energy & materials
2008-03-14 06:00:00 "We are now in the midst of a bear market in stocks - not just here in the U.S., but globally," says Mike Burnick (ccount/click.php?id=1799), editor of Global Market Investor (ccount/click.php?id=1799).He explains, "Two sectors of the S&P 500 in particular look vulnerable to me. The energy and basic materials sectors both face mounting head-winds of a slowing economy." Here, he looks at inverse ETFs to bet on a pullback in these sectors."I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the U.S. slide into recession. In fact, we may already be there. U.S. corporate profits are certainly indicating this. After a 9% decline in third-quarter results for S&P 500 companies, fourth-quarter earnings are on track to plunge 20% year over year. "You would think the energy sector is the place to be right now, with oil prices recently peaking over $100 a barrel. The truth however, is that the major integrated oil companies here in the U.S. are struggling with declining production and profits. "The best...

Bernanke Bearish on Economy
2008-02-14 18:22:00 Helicopter Ben seems more than a bit dour on the prospects for the economy:"The outlook for the economy has worsened in recent months, and the downside risks to growth have increased," Bernanke said. "To date, the largest economic effects of the financial turmoil appear to have been on the housing market, which, as you know, has deteriorated significantly over the past two years or so." Bernanke also said that the "virtual shutdown" of the market for subprime mortgages ? given to people with blemished credit histories or low incomes ? and a reluctance by skittish lenders to make "jumbo" home loans exceeding $417,000 have aggravated problems in the housing market.Unsold homes have piled up and foreclosures have climbed to record highs. "Further cuts in homebuilding and in related activities are likely," Bernanke cautioned.Read the full story here....

Randy Lert, chief portfolio strategist at Russell: “The credit crunch and slowing U.S. economy do raise concerns, but manager optimism for U.S. stocks appears undimmed from that of one year ago … The managers are favoring growth over value, whether it’s large-cap, mid-cap or small-cap. Generally speaking, value stocks are more economically sensitive to the economy, and the managers appear to be positioning themselves so they are n...
