A NEW BEARS FIGHT SONG
2009-11-05 15:21:00 It's time we added a wrinkle to the Bears fight song what with Ron Turner so confounded and confused about what to do with the offense.
Remember When? Bears vs Cardinals Classic Comeback
2009-11-05 06:06:00 I couldn't think of a better way to turn the page from an ugly win against the Browns and start preparing for the defending NFC Champs coming to town than to hop into the wayback machine and think back to the last meeting between the Bears and the Cardinals back in the Super Bowl season of 2006.The stage was set for the Bears. They had gotten off to a strong 5-0 start and headed to Arizona for the national unveiling of their new stadium for a Monday Night Football matchup. Here's what happened next in one of the most improbably comebacks in NFL history: The comeback was great, but Denny Green's postgame meltdown made it a classic....
No pushover for the Bears this week. The Prof's analysis of Sunday&apo
2009-11-04 03:55:00 This figures to be a close game, which means turnovers could very well be the deciding factor. Both teams are 4-0 when they DON'T LOSE the turnover battle, and 0-3 when they DO. Both teams are -4 in interception differential, but in giveaways/takeaways, the Bears are -1, with Arizona -6. Kurt Warner turned it over 6 times in Sunday's loss to Carolina. Both teams are pretty one dimensional, but in Arizona's case, its more by choice. Their short passes to running backs are tantamount to running plays. Tim Hightower has 39 catches, which is the most by any running back in the NFL. Arizona has three wideouts among the top 33 receivers in the NFL in terms of total yardage. Larry Fitzgerald...
Bag Boy: Help me fix the Bears offense
2009-11-03 04:04:00 Bears fans, I come to you in a shared time of need. Our offense could hardly get going against one of the NFL's worst teams. That's not good. Arizona is coming to town, and they are better than the Browns. We need an offensive solution--stat.Here are a couple of my suggestions. >> Try this thing called blocking. It helps your running back advance the ball beyond the line of scrimmage.>> Pick up wide receiver Chris Chambers. San Diego just released him. Couldn't hurt. Now, it's time for your ideas. Put them in the comment box below. Please help me, Bears fans. You're my only hope....
Five on Five: Bears on the run
2009-11-03 02:38:00 This is what we call Five on Five, where RedEye's sports wonks supply answers to five questions (to be published in Wednesday's paper) and you do too. Fire away.1. How are the Bears going to deal with two games in four days Sunday and next Thursday? 2. How concerned are you about Jonathan Toews? 3. What's going on with Tyrus Thomas? 4. We're around the halfway point for most fantasy leagues. How is your team doing? 5. Who's your fantasy MVP so far?You also can play along with our Facebook Fives, where you are able to rank other people's answers....
Top Ten Things About the Bears that Scare the Hell Out of Me
2009-11-02 11:51:00 I'm not usually one to write something negative about the Bears after a victory. But gents, you leave me no choice after that yawn of a 30-6 win over the Browns. Yesterday was supposed to be the game that got us back on track before we start a tough four game stretch against the Cardinals, 49ers, Eagles and vikings. Instead, we're left wondering what kind of team we have this year and if they're even good enough to get to the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy we won and I could look back on this list five weeks from now and laugh at my idiocy (I'll probably do that anyway). But until then, here are the Top Ten...
Bears' Victory Defines Bland
2009-11-02 08:06:00 It is common knowledge that I love the Bears. In fact, I came roaring out of the womb screaming "Bronko Nagurski" and "Red Grange." So, naturally I'm reasonably giddy that our psychologically vulnerable football team regained a minor chunk of self esteem on Sunday by beating a hapless group of Cleveland Browns 30-6. Of course, I'm also thrilled that the Bears covered. As Vince Lombardi or Jimmy the Greek once said, "That's why they play the game."...
Bears win doesn't impress anybody
2009-11-02 06:43:00 (Photo by Stacey Wescott, Chicago Tribune)ChicagoNow's newest sports blogger, the astute and quite bald Mike Nadel, wrote "rarely has a team that won a game by 4 TDs left a stadium with less of a feeling of accomplishment than the Bears did Sunday."That about sums it up. This was probably the least enjoyable blowout in Bears history.Brad Palmer called the Bears win mediocre and said the win was nothing to write home about. David Kaplan had the most praise while Bruce Wolf had perhaps the least, writing "You don't have to have the wisdom of Solomon Wilcots, the CBS analyst today, to know that this is a moral defeat for the Bears." Also check out the post-game haiku at Bears...

Bears Beat up on Browns
2009-11-02 05:19:00 The Bears did what everyone expected them to do, they beat up on the hapless Cleveland Browns, 30-6. The defense looked like the Bears defense of old, but it's hard to judge where they stand after beating up on such an overmatched opponent. Check out this highlight package: The Browns offense set football back a few decades with such a pitiful performance. The defense should be ashamed to even have let the Browns score. The defense had 5 takeaways, including an interception returned for a touchdown by Charles Tillman. That'll help that poor turnover margin they had coming into the game....
Bears laugher over hapless Browns nothing to write home about
2009-11-02 01:33:00 The Bears did what they had to do, but their 30-6 victory over Cleveland (1-7) wasn't much of a confidence builder. The Browns were as bad as advertised, which is why the Bears (4-3) were able to win so handily despite a mediocre effort. The Bears had to settle for field goals on their first three trips inside the red zone. Bears QB Jay Culter was sacked a season-high four times and was under pressure all day. He averaged just 5.9 yards a pass play against a team that had allowed 7.1 yds/pp (25th in the NFL). The league average is 6.2. The Bears showed some improvement in the running game, but not as much as you'd expect against the 31st-ranked rushing defense....
A Look at the Bears 30-6 Win Over the Browns
2009-11-02 00:25:00 Let's start with the Bears, who pounded an awful Cleveland Browns team 30-6 this afternoon at Soldier Field, improving their record to 4-3. First of all, there are no "bad" wins in the NFL. Every win is important. And while today's game didn't go a long way to answering the questions that continue to linger about the offense, it did show that the Bears can find ways to win even when Jay Cutler isn't at his best. The offensive line continues to look suspect. If the Bears aren't careful, they won't have Cutler as their QB too much longer, because the beating he's taking will eventually lead to serious injury. Today, Cutler was sacked 4 times and hit 7 times with...
Bears beating other AFC team from Ohio
2009-11-01 20:48:00 You don't have to have the wisdom of Solomon Wilcots, the CBS analyst today, to know that this is a moral defeat for the Bears. No touchdowns against Cleveland until finally, with two minutes left in the half, Matt Forte did what he couldn't do in Alanta: he held onto the ball at the goal line. But this was against the Browns. The Browns are so bad that Cleveland wants to ship this team to Baltimore, too....

Browns make Bears look relatively suckless
2009-11-01 03:56:00 I've heard many people - including Lance Briggs - opine that the Bears suck. Well, they they did suck last week. They were quite vacuum-like against the Falcons and Packers, too. But they did beat the Steelers ... and if you beat the Steelers, you can't be guilty of all-out suckiness. You want a truly suck-a-licious squad? Meet the Browns....
Bears vs Browns - Live Game Blog
2009-10-31 23:55:00 CURRENT SCCORE: Bears 0 Browns 0Welcome to Bears Game Day. My name is Mike Burzawa and I'm the lead blogger at Bear Goggles On, the Chicago Bears blog on the Fansided Sports Network. Last week's game against the Bengals was pretty much a train wreck, but at least you had the option to turn it off. I had to follow it 'til the bitter end. The ChicagoNow bosses don't unchain me until after the game, so I was pretty much stuck. If nothing else, I think I found a new method of torture for Jack Bauer when 24 starts back up next season. But last week is over and it's time to turn the page. The Bears are back home...
Let's Hope The Chicago Bears Don't Have "Fat Little Girlfrie
2009-10-30 18:58:00 After Saturday's loss to Texas A & M, Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach blamed not only his players, but their "fat little girlfriends" too. &-nbsp; &n-bsp; Let's ignore the fact that the terms "fat" and "little" are contradictory (are the girlfriends short but stocky? petite but pudgy?) and move on to Leach's complaint. According to the head ball coach, the players took their game against Texas A & M for granted because "their fat little girlfriends were telling them what they wanna hear, which is how great you are. And how easy it's gonna be." This weekend the 3-3 Chicago Bears take on the 1-6 Cleveland Browns, led by the hapless Derek Anderson. While the Bears are doing their...
Bears' Johnny Knox No Jackass
2009-10-29 17:19:00 MTV Jackass Johnny Knoxville made a name for himself shocking fans with his outrageous daredevil stunts. Bears rookie wide receiver Johnny Knox is beginning to get recognized for some impressive tricks of his own. While fans aren't likely to see the 23-year-old Knox catch anacondas with his bare hands or run through a herd of charging bulls, his solid hands have earned him touchdowns on offense and his dangerous runs through enemy lines have earned him the honor of NFC special teams player of the month for October. Knox, a fifth-round draft pick out of Abilene Christian, ranks third in the NFL with a 29.0-yard average in his 18 kickoff returns. He's one of just four active NFL players to...
The Professor analyzes what is a MUST game for the Bears vs. Cleveland
2009-10-29 02:52:00 This is a game the Bears (3-3) can ill afford to lose. They only have two or three gimmes remaining on their schedule and Sunday's game against Cleveland is one of them. A loss to the Browns would be devastating and make the Bears unworthy of any playoff consideration, if indeed they still are. The Browns are 1-6, but the 6 loses have come against teams with a combined record of 28-8. All 6 are 5-2 or better. They won 6-3 at Buffalo and took Cincinnati to overtime. Both teams ranks in the bottom half of the league in almost every KEY STAT, but the Browns are much closer to the bottom. The caliber of their competition has no doubt had something...
Bears could use some Ditka right about now
2009-10-27 19:11:00 You talk about a train wreck. That Bears loss at Cincinnati wasn't just hideous it was any movie starring Ben Affleck. My card says it was the Bears most pathetic performance since they were doused in flames by the Detroit Lions 55-20 on Thanksgiving day back in 1997. '97, that just screams Bill and Monica and that stained dress. This brings us to a familiar issue. You know what really sucked about the Bears total team disgrace? Mike Ditka wasn't on the sidelines....

Alex Quigley: Bears as bad as it gets
2009-10-27 01:32:00 You've had a full day to process Sunday's emBearassment. Your blood pressure is finally back to sub-George Wendt levels. Then you decide to read this column.I'm one of the most optimistic Chicago sports fans you'll ever meet. I seriously had the Bears pegged at--please don't laugh--11-5 or 12-4 this year. Even after the giveaway game at Atlanta, 10-6 seemed reasonable with Cincinnati, Cleveland, St. Louis, Detroit, San Francisco and home games against the Pack and Vikes left to play. Then the worst game of the Lovie Smith era happened. It was basically over at 28-0. My jersey came off when Kevin Payne took a stupid personal foul in the third. To put it another way: It was the worst Bears...
A Bears Fan In Cleveland: My Browns v. Packers Tailgate Album
2009-10-26 15:02:00 This weekend I was in Cleveland for "Sports Media 360", a sports media conference put on by Glenn Moore of The Dugout Sports Show. Members of print, web and radio gathered to discuss a variety of topics including building credibility as a blogger, gaining access to teams and players, how social media has changed the face of the sports industry and more. The audio from my panel should be uploaded and posted here soon. In the meantime, check out a photo album of some of our group at Sunday's Browns/Packers game. Bears Report Card from the Debacle in Cincinnati
2009-10-26 06:19:00 The game that was dubbed this week as the "Benson Bowl" turned out to be sweet revenge for former Bears running back Cedric Benson, despite his post game comments in which he assured the media otherwise. A 45-10 blasting in the Queen City by the Bengals over the Bears was the most embarrassing loss of the season for Chicago's beloved football team. Lovie Smith's defense allowed scores on the Bengals first five drives and couldn't recover, while Jay Cutler threw three picks and the team stumbled out of Cincinnati with a 35 point defeat.Much was made about Cedric Benson and his relationship with the Bears while he was here, and what was said by the team when the Bengals were...

Bears get chewed up and spit out by Bengals
2009-10-26 03:54:00 Talk about road kill! Carson Palmer picked the Bears clean before being given the rest of the day off. He was in the game for Cincinnati's first 7 possessions. The Bengals scored on every one. They had 6 touchdowns ( Palmer passed for 5 of them) and a field goal. If it had been a fight, the ref would have stopped it in the second round. It was 31-0 before the Bears managed a last-second field goal to end the first half. It wound up at 45-10. Rarely has a Bear defense looked so bad. Cedric Benson went through them and around them for a career-high 189 yards. The pass defense was almost non-existent. Palmer's first 3 touchdown passes were...
Hard Knocks Life: Bengals Humble Bears
2009-10-26 02:34:00 A complete train wreck. Is there any other way to describe what was supposed to be a football game between the Bears and Bengals on Sunday? The stars of HBO's latest edition of Hard Knocks series put a beating of epic proportions on the Modest of the Midway. On the day when the Patriots and Tampa Bay Bucs squared off in the NFL's annual trip to London, it's good this games wasn't played overseas. It would be hard explaining to a football newbie what that was, because it sure as hell didn't resemble football.Nothing went right for the Bears as they bowed to the Bengals 45-10. If there was any consistency in that game for the Bears, it was that...
Cincinnati Bensons 45, Bears 10
2009-10-25 22:40:00 Revenge is a dish best served at, oh, about 64 degrees, overcast. Great day for football in Cincy. It was kind of routine for the Bengals. Three and out..of this world. 21-0 in the second quarter. Oh, wait a minute. There's another Bengal TD. Four first half possessions, four touchdowns! The game was so over at that point Cedric Benson could have walked out of the stadium and said he was done for the day. And he would have gotten a standing ovation, unlike the time he was ratted out by his then Bears teammate Michael Haynes when Benson exited an exhibition game....

Bears at Bengals: Prediction Time
2009-10-22 14:24:00 In past years it would have been a little tough trying to get excited about playing Cincinnati this Sunday but three things have conspired to perhap smake this game quite memorable. A. Chad Ochocinco is insane: (Bears Game Day, No Spain, No Gain, Jay Cutler Superstar, The Rock Report) B. Cedric Benson is resurrected: (Da' Bears Blog) C. The 4-2 Bengals have a better record than the 3-2 Bears: (The Professor) A few weeks ago a loss to the Bengals would have been unthinkable, now it's a tough road game against a surprising opponent. Reminds me of last year's regular-season finale against Houston that cost the Bears a playoff berth. Glad to see The Professor is going with the Bears and, as always,...
Bears may one day regret Cutler extension
2009-10-21 06:16:00 Please! You certainly don't think this is a marriage that's going to remain locked in the honeymoon stage for the next four-plus years? Congrats to Jay Cutler on his new deal with the Bears. A package that will A, keep Jay at Halas Hall through 2013 and B, assure about four or five generations of Cutlers that traditional Monday through Friday 9 to 5 work won't be a necessary part of their adult life. Damn, there are McCaskeys who can relate to that....
Bears extend Cutler through 2013
2009-10-21 05:41:00 Jay Cutler signs a 2-year extension. (Photo courtesy of chicagobears.com)Jay Cutler got his pay day; the pay day that we were all expecting since the Bears brought him here from the Denver Broncos back in April. This deal shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention. When the Bears committed two first round draft picks and Kyle Orton to bring in a franchise quarterback, you knew they weren't going to let him get away....
Chicago Bears Sign Jay Cutler To 2 Year Extension...YES!!
2009-10-21 03:20:00 According to multiple sources, the Chicago Bears have signed Jay Cutler to a 2 year extension which runs though 2013. The deal is for a reported 30 million dollars with 20 million gauranteedmaking him the official Chicago Bears FRANCHISE quarterback. What are your thoughts on the extension. Bears and Cutler haunted by picks, other mistakes
2009-10-19 23:18:00 I will be reading from my new book "Fat Guys shouldn't be Dancin' at halftime" Thursday night October 22 at Barbara's Bookstore, 1100 Lake Street in Oak Park. Game time: 7 P.M. I would hope we can all agree on this. If Jay Cutler hasn't established a record for most interceptions given up on Sunday nights before the regular season reaches Halloween then we need to ask for a recount. The thought that haunts? If Cutler seals the deal and takes the Bears to the house on the team's first possession in the Dome I have a lingering feeling the Falcons might have rolled over and played dead. Take this to the bank. Johnnie Knox, the pride and joy of Abilene...
Limbaugh should buy Bears, rename them Chicago Rush
2009-10-19 14:03:00 This is ridiculous. Not as in Jeff Joniak's "Devin Hester, you are ridiculous," which Hester (and his return game mates) showed signs of being. Special teams gave the offense an Arena Football field, which is what a dome is for anyway. No, this was ridiculous as in John Wayne's "this is ri-goddam-diculous." An interception in the red zone, a fumble in the red zone, then Forte decides he has the yips and fumbles on the very next play (how often does that happen? about as often as the Atlanta Falcons have back-to-back winning seasons, which, thanks in part to the Bears, the Falcons will finally have). Oh, and an Orlando Pace false start on fourth and 1 at the 5 ...
Top Ten Ways the Bears Blew It Against the Falcons
2009-10-19 12:11:00 No need to mince words Bears fans because that game was flat out embarrassing. That's twice now this team has folded in the game's final moments in front of a national television audience. Twice we've watched Jay Cutler commit costly turnovers and the defense fall flat on its face. Ugh...Here are the Top Ten Ways the Bears Blew It Against the Falcons.(Nuccio DiNuzzo, Chicago Tribune / October 18, 2009)10. Middle of the FieldI'll never understand how a guy like Tony Gonzalez, a future first ballot Hall of Famer can get so wide open against this team?Any team that wants to beat the Bears needs to look no further than exploiting the middle of the field. Bears Thoughts After Giving Away the Atlanta Game
2009-10-19 08:04:00 The Bears did not lose to the Atlanta Falcons tonight instead they gave away the game by self destructing especially in the Red Zone. Jay Cutler threw 2 bad interceptions and Matt Forte had perhaps the worst game of his short professional career. Add in a terrible night for the special teams and a rough night for the offensive line and it spelled defeat in an extremely winnable football game in the Georgia Dome. How does the special teams have 12 men on the field late in the game when the Falcons had just been forced to punt? That cannot happen but fortunately for the Bears they were bailed out one play later when Matt Ryan threw his 2nd interception...
Awful Effort as Bears fall to Falcons
2009-10-19 06:51:00 The Bears fell to the Falcons 21-14 on Sunday night in what could at best be called a game of missed opportunities by the most die-hard, homer Bears fan. I know; I followed each and every play in my live game blog. If you'd rather see the NFL.com highlight package, go here. At it's worst, this game was a complete mess, complete with sloppy penalties, mental mistakes, fumbles, interceptions, blown assignments, lousy coverage. All phases of the game left a lot to be desired. I offer more breakdown here. The defense started out strong, but fell apart with a simple no-huddle offense by the Falcons picked them apart. Matt Ryan picked apart the Bears Cover-2 defense like a hot knife...
Bears let another one get away in Atlanta
2009-10-19 06:14:00 The Bears had some great opportunites to avenge last year's last-second loss in Atlanta, only to squander them with turnovers and penalties. They managed but 7 points in four trips inside the red zone. The Bears had two chances to score a tying touchdown from the 1-yard line late in the 4th quarter. Matt Forte fumbled on each of them. The Falcons recovered the second one and the Bears came away empty. Then in the final two minutes, with Atlanta leading 21-14, two Bears penalties resulted in a third-and-25 at the Atlanta-29. Jay Cutler got most of it back with a 24-yard pass to Earl Bennett. But on fourth-and-one at the 5, veteran LT Orlando Pace jumped offside and a Cutler pass to Desmond Clark fell incomplete. The 21-14 loss...

Bears - Falcons Live Game Thread
2009-10-18 12:00:00 CURRENT SCORE: Bears 0 Falcons 0Greetings Bears fans and welcome to Bears Game Day. Glad to be back after the Bye week. It's full steam now for the rest of the season and hopefully the Super Bowl.Leave it to the Bears to spice things up before heading to Atlanta with a rare in-season trade for Tampa defensive end Gaines Adams on Friday night. Adams has underachieved for the Bucs after being drafted 4th overall in the 2007 draft. The prevailing thought is that a change of scenery and the tutelage of Rod Marinelli will make this a great deal for the Bears, despite giving up a 2nd round pick in the 2010 draft. It could spell the end of the...

Bears continue to mortgage their future with trade for DE Gaines Adams
2009-10-17 16:30:00 As the saying goes, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." That seems to be the case in the trade in which Tampa Bay sent DE Gaines Adams to the Bears for a second-round draft pick. The 0-5 Bucs no longer saw Adams (the #4 overall pick in the 2007 draft) as a building block for their future. Somehow the Bears do. Gaines does give the Bears some flexibility at defensive end, what with Adewale Ogunleye and Mark Anderson in the final year of their contracts, but for a second-round draft pick??? I don't see that as a bargain. I see that as mortgaging the future. The Bears overpaid for Jay Culter and now they have overpaid for Adams, a...
Bears Add DE Gaines Adams, Angelo Still Doesn't Address Biggest Need
2009-10-17 15:34:00 Today the Bears made the first trade of the NFL season, and it wasn't for a wide receiver or even some help in the secondary. It was for a backup defensive end as the Bears picked up the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft Gaines Adams from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2010 draft pick. Does that mean come April 2010, will the Bears be the first team to not participate in the draft because of lack of any picks?? A quick rundown on Gaines Adams (Clemson) includes playing for some mediocre Bucs teams under John Gruden and one playoff appearance in 2007. He's a tall (6'5) guy to put on the end and adds another body to... |
