Bears bunker mentality nothing new; snub of NBC is
2009-11-19 19:25:00
The Bears have long had a bunker mentality at Halas Hall. It is born out of arrogance and insecurity, bordering on paranoia and can be traced to Michael McCaskey (the man behind the curtain) and Jerry Angelo.   A decade or so ago, I was doing a live-shot for Channel 7 in the comfort of one of the Bears meeting rooms at the original Halas Hall, having been given permission by the public relations director because of a snowstorm. McCaskey happened by and said I should be outside, snowstorm or not. I asked him if he thought any other company would take that stance toward a major media outlet providing it with free publicity. McCaskey's response, "We don't need the publicity." I...

Spending your Sunday at Soldier Field is always an experience made most entertaining sometimes not by the players, but the fans in the stands. LeBron to Browns? How about these Chicago stars to the Bears?
2009-11-19 06:23:00
LeBron James is going to the Cleveland Browns?  Well, not really, but Browns fans can dream, can't they?  Check out this State Farm commercial: We all know that the Browns need all the help they can get.  I mean the Bears beat them.  The Bears could use some help of their own and there is no shortage of quality athletes to help the Beloved right here in our own back yard.  Check out my suggestions and add your own in the Comments....
The Professor's analysis of the Bears-Eagles prime-time matchup
2009-11-19 01:22:00
The Bears (4-5) and Eagles (5-4) both come into this game with two-game losing streaks and both have have been on something of a roller coaster in terms of consistency. The Bears haven't beaten a good team since Week-2 when they parlayed a missed field goal and the absence of Troy Polomalu into a 3-point victory over Pittsburgh. The Bears managed to beat a Seattle team missing QB Matt Hasselbeck and 7 other starters and lowly Detroit and Cleveland. Philadelphia is among Oakland's two victims. So both teams are capable of anything in this game.   The Eagles are better than the Bears on both offense and defense, but not appreciably better; the Bears have the advantage on special teams.   Neither team...
Westbrook just the latest break for Bears
2009-11-18 00:38:00
The Bears have been a major disappointment this season, but it's especially frustrating with the number of breaks that this team has been able to catch en route to their 4-5 record.  If you look at their four wins, two have come against god-awful teams while their two "quality" wins have come when the other teams have gift wrapped the wins.  Check it out....
Look out for Bears, Bulls and Bud Adams

"Make every play clear the way to victory" Ok, so you root for the Bears. i know you're down in the mouth. I know you see Josh Beekman where the Vikings see Brett Favre and the New Orleans Saints see Drew Brees. Here's a pick me up courtesy of Coppock. No runs, no hits, no charge. Sunday night on the lakefront bet the Bears and parlay with the over against the Philadelphia Eagles. The absolute worst you can do is lose your kid's lunch money.  ...
Steelers Fan Says He Was Poisoned By Bears Fans
2009-11-17 19:31:00
Back in September the Chicago Bears opened up their home schedule with a big last-minute victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. The season was fresh and new, the weather was still warm and the sweet mixture of beer and victory was wet on the lips of Bears fans all over the city.  Things weren't so cheery for the Steelers fans. One in particular is claiming that Bears fans poisoned his drink after the game, leaving him blind and brain damaged. After the game 46-year-old Zack Heddinger, his sister Lisa, and some friends went to Kitty O'Shea's on Michigan Avenue, where he claims they began trash talking with Bears fans. ...
Something to Cheer Up Bears Fans
2009-11-14 01:54:00
Since Bears fans and the namesake have had a rough week, I found a video gem to cheer you all up. It comes from Powder, or as I like to call him, Mini-Conan O' Brien. You may recall him from such videos on JCS like the "Jay Cutler Rap". Turns out he's a huge Packer fan and he has a new "rap" called "Packer Backer". You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll send it to your friends and you'll make your kids promise they will NEVER write rhymes like this. Without further ado......
Bears In Haiku: The Manchurian Quarterback
2009-11-13 19:44:00
Why is Jay Cutler (almost) smiling? (Chicago Tribune Photo)Could Cutler be the Manchurian quarterback Sent to destroy us?Our "franchise quarterback" now leads the NFL with 17 interceptions.   The Tribune's David Haugh sums it up: Not sure what Cutler brought to California. But a franchise quarterback cannot let his franchise down the way Cutler did against a sub-.500 49ers team. He responded to working on three days' rest like a rag-armed pitcher.Between now and the evening kickoff Nov. 22 against the Eagles, can the Park District petition to close Soldier Field after dark so the game can be played at noon? We can call it the Cutler Decree. He is worse at night than a solar watch. In nationally televised prime-time games on the...
Cutler and Bears Baffled in Red Zone Again
2009-11-13 10:21:00
Hail the brilliance of the free press! I want to congratulate all my media colleagues who insist upon calling "little Jay attitude" a "franchise quarterback." Boy, Cutler certainly did deliver big in clutch time in the Bay Area on Thursday night.  Right now Cutler leads the NFL in one category and one category only: most interceptions in prime time football games. Why is this overpaid brat doomed to second rate status? The red zone, baby. When you get down deep in the opponents backyard and the field tightens up and you can't find the end zone, you don't know how to win. Silly me. Cutler also leads the NFL in interceptions, period, with 17.  ...
Bears go thud in the night at San Francisco
2009-11-13 06:33:00
The Bears defense rose to the occasion, but the offense turned in its worst performance of the season, Jay Cutler in particular. Cutler threw five interceptions. Two came in the red zone. Two others resulted in San Francisco's only points, the 49ers beating the Bears for the 7th straight time at Candlestick, 10-6.   Instead of passing to set up the run against the San Francisco's 19th-ranked defense, the Bears tried to establish the run against the league's #1 rushing defense. The result was 41 yards rushing and a 2.0 average.   The Bears did little to stretch the 49ers defense. Their two biggest pass plays came on screens to Matt Forte, who had 8 catches for 120 yards. A...
It's official: The Bears officially suck
2009-11-13 06:14:00
I am still in Jay Cutler's corner. I like him as risk-taking gunslinger. He makes the game exciting. But man, did you see that last loss by the Bears. Singletary's boys made us a look like a Pop Warner team swimming in codeine. Six Robbie Gould points and no Red-Zone success. We got served and I may head toward my wife's favorite team: the Indianapolis Colts. You know that a 4 and 5 record is terrible.  We have to win 4 more just to break even on the season. It's official: The bears are below mediocre - Lovie's coaching is horrendous and the offensive line could stand to spend more time in the weight room. They suck everyone, and you know...

Bears: more points than picks, 6-5!
2009-11-13 05:04:00
All I wanted was an actual football contest tonight. Think about it. It's been weeks since the Bears had a game. The one in Cincinnati wasn't. Then there was the bye week. Then that exhibition game with Cleveland. Then last week, when we all bowed out with Tommie Harris.   And, well, we finally got one in the last minute if you could stay awake.     It didn't quite feel like real NFL football what with the game on a Thursday on Channel 50 in between "Everybody Loves Raymond" reruns, right? But there was the voice of Pat Summerall. Sure he was speaking of Lexus and Southwest Airlines and Kay Jewelers  instead of Ditka and Payton and, of course,...

Then that exhibition game with Cleveland. Then last week, when we all bowed out with Tommie Harris.   It'd have been nice to have had a game that kept our interest past halftime. Bears vs Niners - Live Game Thread
2009-11-12 13:36:00
CURRENT SCORE: Bears 0 Niners 0Welcome to Bears Game Day! (I throw in the exclamation point because I'm trying to express excitement, which isn't easy these days).  My name is Mike Burzawa and I'm the lead blogger at Bear Goggles On, the Chicago Bears blog on the Fansided Sports Network. My thanks to Julie from A League of Her Own for filling in for me last week.  Unless you've been living under a rock, you know what happened last week against the Cardinals.  It was worse than the score indicated.  The Bears are our in San Francisco to take on Mike Singletary's 49ers to open the NFL Network's Thursday Night Football 2009 schedule.  What that means is that unless you live...
Bears - 49ers Keys to the Game (Slideshow)
2009-11-12 04:57:00
The Bears look to salvage a shred of dignity as they head to San Francisco to face Mike Singletary's 49ers on Thursday night.  After last week's embarrassment against the Cardinals, there's nowhere to go but up, right?  Believe it or not, I think the Bears can actually win this game.  Think I'm kidding?  Check out the slideshow for my Keys to the Game.Be sure to join me back here for our Live Game Day Blog.  I'll be giving updates and running commentary throughout the game.   Misery loves company, so join the discussion.  You'll feel better; I promise!...
Why Do I Like the Chicago Bears This Week?
2009-11-12 04:25:00
Because I always like the Chicago Bears.Only one note on this game.  The news that Tommie Harris will not be suspended by the league against the 49ers will make this entire ballgame about him.  When he places his hand on the ground, he puts his reputation right beside Lovie Smith's: on the firing line.Chicago Bears 40, San Francisco 49ers 38...
Larry Johnson Isn't The Answer To The Chicago Bears Problems
2009-11-11 19:23:00
The Chicago Bears running game has not been anything to write home about this season.  Let's face it, the Bears are "running off the bus" for 28th best in the NFL per game (90.5 yds/game) and next to last in attempts in the NFL right above the team that beat them by 20 this past Sunday.  As much as head coach Lovie Smith and "meatball" fans want to admit the Bears are a run first team only, they are lying to themselves.  I really do not blame the Bears for the next to last in rushing attempts because I think this is a year of transition.  When you bring in a franchise type of quarterback, you want to see what...
Five on Five: Bears game day
2009-11-11 00:59:00
Time for a special Five on Five: Weekday Bears game edition. Answer these questions before the RedEye panel gets a chance to. Their answers will be in Thursday's RedEye.1. How will Bears legend Mike Singletary greet his former team Thursday? 2. Why did the NFL Network pick tonight's Bears game to be its first of the season? 3. How is an NFL Network broadcast different from one of the regular NFL broadcasts? 4. Michael Vick is apparently already grumbling. What would be your advice to him? 5. What was different about the White Sox's spring training schedule released Wednesday? Now, go to our Facebook Fives, where you can rank other people's answers....
Tivo "30 Rock," watch at 9 p.m. Thursday after Bears' first
2009-11-10 04:41:00
Players available to the Bears: Larry Johnson -- released by the Chiefs. Latest incident was a gay slur he made. He's old and he's had a hard time behind a lousy offensive line. Matt Forte is young and has had a hard time behind a lousy offensive line. Johnson would be a terrible fit here but he'd probably flourish in Cincinnati. Michael Vick -- might be available next year. Doesn't like situation in Philadelphia. Is not needed by the Bears, but remember after the Bears got Cutler that Vick was mentioned because you always need a proven backup when you're in contention. Well, the Bears aren't in contention, and they need just about everything except a quarterback, and even if...
Bears Stink up the Joint vs Arizona
2009-11-09 09:18:00
Tommy Harris, the Bears overpaid defensive tackle is a bum. A jerk. He's also selfish. In the biggest game the Bears have played this year he gets tossed out roughly 45 seconds after the coin toss for slugging Arizona tackle Deuce Lutui. It is a damn shame that NFL rules don't allow the McCaskeys -- jeez, when was the last time I was in their corner? -- to fine Harris his full game salary. If I'm Jerry Angelo I've got two options for Harris when his roster bonus comes due in March: shove off or shove it. Meanwhile, Tommy Boy isn't the only culprit. The Bears lack of energy on defense was a disgrace to the most storied franchise in pro football....
Cardinals' Wisenhunt Channels Dennis Green, Twists Knife on Bears
2009-11-09 05:43:00
Cardinals head coach Ken Wisenhunt twisted the knife in his post game press conference following the Cardinals 41-21 drubbing of the Bears on Sunday.  This clip from Comcast Sports Net Chicago: It could just be me, but it sure seemed like he went out of his way to compliment the Bears failed and feeble comeback bid just to work in his shot.   He puts the ass in classy.   ...
The Bears ARE who we thought they were - Not a playoff team
2009-11-09 03:29:00
We came into this week's game mocking Dennis Green and his "The Bears are who we thought they were!" tirade and leave today imitating this famous rant: The Bears are who we thought they were - a bad team.  It's the team we were afraid they were when they got bombed by the Bengals a couple of weeks ago.  It's the team we were concerned about when they "won ugly" against the Browns last week.Lovie Smith told us that a win is a win and a loss only counts as one loss.  That Lovie is good at math.  Too bad he's not as good at coaching.   It's pretty safe to pull a sheet over the 2009 season and fit...

THE DARTBOARD: The Bears' Tommie Harris Gets Punchy
2009-11-09 00:18:00
Last week, in the third quarter of the Florida Gators' win over the Georgia Bulldogs, UF linebacker Brandon Spikes earned himself a one-game suspension after he was caught trying to gouge out the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey. Today, troubled Chicago Bears tackle Tommie Harris did Spikes one better when he landed a haymaker to the head of Arizona Cardinals lineman Deuce Lutui and got himself ejected just FOUR PLAYS INTO THE GAME. Check out this video of the punch:...
Loss to Arizona sends Bears into a free fall
2009-11-08 23:50:00
Troy Aikman had it right when he likened the Bears (4-4) to a high school team. They were over-matched, outplayed, and outclassed in losing 41-21 to Arizona (5-3). The Cardinals scored on all 5 of their first-half possessions. They scored four touchdowns on drives of at least 70 yards and tacked on a last-second field goal to take a 31-7 lead at the half. Kurt Warner tied a career-high with 5 touchdown passes. Larry Fitzgerald caught 9 passes for 123 yards, most of them at the expense of Charles Tillman, who left the game just before the half with a shoulder injury. More embarrassing was the Cardinals running game, which ranked 31st in the league coming in. The Cards ran for 182 yards,...

Don't you wish Dennis Green was still the coach of the Cardinals? Because that was fun. Other things I routinely wish for include Brian Urlacher playing, an Offensive Line, and for Ron Turner to steal the Colts' offensive playbook.   Today the Bears (4-3) take on the Arizona Cardinals (4-3) at Soldier Field. Heading into today's game, the Bears are tied with Green Bay (4-3), 2.5 games behind the hated Minnesota Vikings and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. For those who are curious, his name rhymes with Schmett Smarve. If the Bears want to have a shot at the post-season, today's as close to a must-win as you can get.  Bear down!  ...
Bears Host Ladies Night, Squeals Ensue
2009-11-06 15:57:00
Robbie Gould, Earl Bennett, Brett Basanez, Caleb Hanie & Nick Roach Tuesday night the Chicago Bears hosted their annual "Football 101" seminar, an event designed to teach women about the game of football, give them a behind-the-scenes look at Soldier Field and let them learn more about their favorite Bears players. From the moment I stepped into the United Club, it was clear this was no game day at Soldier Field. In fact, at times it was more like a fireman's date auction.  Gone were the usual beer bellies, trash talkers and Ditka 'staches. Instead, women wearing everything from jerseys to blue and orange boas, filled the club level, trying samples of Barefoot Wine, shopping for Bears gear and waiting...

Bears deserve all the hostility you can give them
2009-11-05 23:44:00
You're Ron Turner, you run the Bears offense. Right now, you lead the nation in one category. And what category might that be?Take a bow if you responded with the following answer: absorbing close and medium range bullets. Turner is a symbol of what's charmed me about the Bears for over five decades. The Cubs and Sox generate opinions. The Bears generate hositlity and the kind of anger reserved for your half drunk brother in law on Christmas Eve....

Remember When? Bears vs Cardinals Classic Comeback
2009-11-05 06:06:00
I couldn't think of a better way to turn the page from an ugly win against the Browns and start preparing for the defending NFC Champs coming to town than to hop into the wayback machine and think back to the last meeting between the Bears and the Cardinals back in the Super Bowl season of 2006.The stage was set for the Bears.  They had gotten off to a strong 5-0 start and headed to Arizona for the national unveiling of their new stadium for a Monday Night Football matchup.  Here's what happened next in one of the most improbably comebacks in NFL history: The comeback was great, but Denny Green's postgame meltdown made it a classic....
No pushover for the Bears this week. The Prof's analysis of Sunday&apo
2009-11-04 03:55:00
This figures to be a close game, which means turnovers could very well be the deciding factor. Both teams are 4-0 when they DON'T LOSE the turnover battle, and 0-3 when they DO. Both teams are -4 in interception differential, but in giveaways/takeaways, the Bears are -1, with Arizona -6. Kurt Warner turned it over 6 times in Sunday's loss to Carolina. Both teams are pretty one dimensional, but in Arizona's case, its more by choice. Their short passes to running backs are tantamount to running plays. Tim Hightower has 39 catches, which is the most by any running back in the NFL. Arizona has three wideouts among the top 33 receivers in the NFL in terms of total yardage. Larry Fitzgerald...
Bag Boy: Help me fix the Bears offense
2009-11-03 04:04:00
Bears fans, I come to you in a shared time of need. Our offense could hardly get going against one of the NFL's worst teams. That's not good. Arizona is coming to town, and they are better than the Browns. We need an offensive solution--stat.Here are a couple of my suggestions. >> Try this thing called blocking. It helps your running back advance the ball beyond the line of scrimmage.>> Pick up wide receiver Chris Chambers. San Diego just released him. Couldn't hurt. Now, it's time for your ideas. Put them in the comment box below. Please help me, Bears fans. You're my only hope....

Top Ten Things About the Bears that Scare the Hell Out of Me
2009-11-02 11:51:00
I'm not usually one to write something negative about the Bears after a victory. But gents, you leave me no choice after that yawn of a 30-6 win over the Browns. Yesterday was supposed to be the game that got us back on track before we start a tough four game stretch against the Cardinals, 49ers, Eagles and vikings. Instead, we're left wondering what kind of team we have this year and if they're even good enough to get to the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy we won and I could look back on this list five weeks from now and laugh at my idiocy (I'll probably do that anyway). But until then, here are the Top Ten...
Bears' Victory Defines Bland
2009-11-02 08:06:00
It is common knowledge that I love the Bears. In fact, I came roaring out of the womb screaming "Bronko Nagurski" and "Red Grange." So, naturally I'm reasonably giddy that our psychologically vulnerable football team regained a minor chunk of self esteem on Sunday by beating a hapless group of Cleveland Browns 30-6. Of course, I'm also thrilled that the Bears covered.  As Vince Lombardi or Jimmy the Greek once said, "That's why they play the game."...
Bears win doesn't impress anybody
2009-11-02 06:43:00
(Photo by Stacey Wescott, Chicago Tribune)ChicagoNow's newest sports blogger, the astute and quite bald Mike Nadel, wrote "rarely has a team that won a game by 4 TDs left a stadium with less of a feeling of accomplishment than the Bears did Sunday."That about sums it up. This was probably the least enjoyable blowout in Bears history.Brad Palmer called the Bears win mediocre and said the win was nothing to write home about. David Kaplan had the most praise while Bruce Wolf had perhaps the least, writing "You don't have to have the wisdom of Solomon Wilcots, the CBS analyst today, to know that this is a moral defeat for the Bears." Also check out the post-game haiku at Bears...

Bears Beat up on Browns
2009-11-02 05:19:00
The Bears did what everyone expected them to do, they beat up on the hapless Cleveland Browns, 30-6.  The defense looked like the Bears defense of old, but it's hard to judge where they stand after beating up on such an overmatched opponent.   Check out this highlight package: The Browns offense set football back a few decades with such a pitiful performance.  The defense should be ashamed to even have let the Browns score.  The defense had 5 takeaways, including an interception returned for a touchdown by Charles Tillman.  That'll help that poor turnover margin they had coming into the game....
Bears laugher over hapless Browns nothing to write home about
2009-11-02 01:33:00
The Bears did what they had to do, but their 30-6 victory over Cleveland (1-7) wasn't much of a confidence builder. The Browns were as bad as advertised, which is why the Bears (4-3) were able to win so handily despite a mediocre effort. The Bears had to settle for field goals on their first three trips inside the red zone. Bears QB Jay Culter was sacked a season-high four times and was under pressure all day. He averaged just 5.9 yards a pass play against a team that had allowed 7.1 yds/pp (25th in the NFL). The league average is 6.2. The Bears showed some improvement in the running game, but not as much as you'd expect against the 31st-ranked rushing defense....
A Look at the Bears 30-6 Win Over the Browns
2009-11-02 00:25:00
Let's start with the Bears, who pounded an awful Cleveland Browns team 30-6 this afternoon at Soldier Field, improving their record to 4-3. First of all, there are no "bad" wins in the NFL. Every win is important. And while today's game didn't go a long way to answering the questions that continue to linger about the offense, it did show that the Bears can find ways to win even when Jay Cutler isn't at his best. The offensive line continues to look suspect. If the Bears aren't careful, they won't have Cutler as their QB too much longer, because the beating he's taking will eventually lead to serious injury. Today, Cutler was sacked 4 times and hit 7 times with...
Bears beating other AFC team from Ohio
2009-11-01 20:48:00
You don't have to have the wisdom of Solomon Wilcots, the CBS analyst today, to know that this is a moral defeat for the Bears. No touchdowns against Cleveland until finally, with two minutes left in the half, Matt Forte did what he couldn't do in Alanta: he held onto the ball at the goal line. But this was against the Browns.  The Browns are so bad that Cleveland wants to ship this team to Baltimore, too....

Browns make Bears look relatively suckless
2009-11-01 03:56:00
I've heard many people - including Lance Briggs - opine that the Bears suck. Well, they they did suck last week. They were quite vacuum-like against the Falcons and  Packers, too. But they did beat the Steelers ... and if you beat the Steelers, you can't be guilty of all-out suckiness. You want a truly suck-a-licious squad? Meet the Browns....
