Richie Kotzen: and the beat goes on!
2009-10-19 23:08:00 Richard Wright says: One of the most talented musicians and performers around. One of the greatest guitarists and singers, a true rock legend and my musical hero. I was lucky enough to chat to him, see him play guitar in a music shop.., as if that wasn't enough I then to have the privilege of being the only fan allowed in soundcheck for the Leeds gig as well as being on the guestlist! Bulls beat Timberwolves, 94-90
2009-10-17 05:11:00 This.....wasn't the highest standard game ever. The Bulls beat the Timberwolves for the second time in a week, and advanced to a tidy 5-1 record in the preseason. That's the good news. The bad news is that they weren't very good tonight. Then again, the Timberwolves were worse. Here's the report card....
Huet plays just "fine" as Blackhawks beat Nashville 3-1
2009-10-16 05:05:00 Let's talk about media and over-hyping. I was involved in that at times when I was a Chicago sportswriter. I was informed someone recently referred to me in an internet post as a douchebag hack. I have to tell you, it makes me warm and fuzzy all over to be remembered. You get involved with teams, you get close to some players and management and you sell their bill of goods. It's happened for decades and it's happening now. Payoffs? Well, it's not that blatant. But it's all the same. Some media are in the tank and swimming with the sharks, even if they have never been more than guppies. That's why the media is fed, parked, pampered and preened....
Blackhawks beat Oilers, spoil Khabibulin's spirited effort
2009-10-15 06:46:00 The Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night at the United Center was a complete team victory. Antii Niemi was good when it counted and Patrick Sharp led the Hawks' strong offensive attack with a goal and an assist. While most Hawks fans focused on the home goal netminding, ex-Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin allowed the Oilers to keep the game competitive. The Blackhawks outshot the Oilers 30-10 through the first two periods and controlled the majority of the play. Khabibulin stopped a Sharp penalty shot, a Kris Versteeg short-handed breakaway attempt and a point blank one-timer from Patrick Kane to name a few of the many Blackhawks chances throughout the game. As good as Khabby performed...

Man alleges he was beat up at Dominick's
2009-09-22 03:24:00 A Chicago man is suing Dominick's and three of its employees for allegedly beating him without provocation at the store on N. Clybourn. In the complaint filed today, Orlando Aguirre states that on August 26, 2008, he was a "business invitee" at the store when he was physically attacked by Juan Hernandez, Israel Rosario and Daniel Luna, employees of Dominicks. The complaint further states that Dominick's was negligent when it, among other things, "carelessly and negligently failed to adequately train and supervise security personnel," "carelessly and negligently failed to perform criminal background checks and otherwise screen their security personnel," and "carelessly and negligently failed to warn those on the premises of the likelihood for a physical altercation to take place."...
Estate of woman beat by heroin supplier sues supplier and his parents
2009-09-21 22:50:00 The estate of a 20 year old woman is suing the man who allegedly supplied her with heroin and beat her to death as well as the man's parents. The complaint, filed today in the Circuit Court of Cook County, states that in the early morning hours of June 29, 2008, defendant Thomas Young, who was 21 years old at the time, bought heroin and then invited decedent Gina Dominick to go to his parents' house in Prospect Heights where "he would supply her with some of the heroin he had purchased." The complaint further states that Gina went to the home owned and occupied by defendants Chester and Teresa Young with Thomas Young where Thomas Young then "violently struck and beat" her. Elsewhere in the...

Beat Writers Project the 53
2009-09-03 07:12:00 Both of the local beats have projected the Bears' 53-man roster and there are a few surprises.Click here to read David Haugh in the Trib.Click here to read Brad Biggs in the Sun-Times.Both men have some similar opinions but I'll just respond to the trends I'm seeing.1. I hope the Bears do not cut Craig Steltz in favor of Josh Bullocks. Bullocks may have a lot more starts under his belt but those starts are for that horror show of a defense down in New Orleans. Bullocks has no upside and Steltz has a ton, in my opinion. It'll take a day for someone to scoop him up.2. On the "scoop up" trend, I agree with Biggs on this one:...

World Heart Beat
2009-07-29 02:14:00 I recently had the good-fortune of creating a website for a new venture in London: World Heart Beat Music Academy. Check out the finished site here. The project is the dream of my dear friend Sahana Gero, and I’m really proud to play even a small part of making it a reality. The motto is an excerpt from Sri Chinmoy’s writings: “We are all truly unlimited, if we only dare to try…” — Sri Chinmoy Sahana’s dauntless enthusiasm and inspiration has for many years been the driving force behind the 51st State Band; a huge orchestra for children and young people in West London. The band performed last month at the Royal Festival Hall with jazz legend Julian Joseph. You can see videos and photos at 51stStateBand.org. “The World Heart Beat Music Academy envisions a world where music, as a universal form of communication, bridges cultural, political, economic and linguistic barriers. The Academy aims to bring the myriad of the world’s cultures together through music, ...

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Bleed ‘Em
2009-05-30 16:27:00 Once, when I was in Colorado Springs, a coworker invited me into his classroom to watch a video. “Porn?” I asked. So hopeful. “No,” he said. “It’s about End Times.” Sure enough, the video, about five minutes long, showed how true believers will disappear during the Rapture, leaving nonbelievers behind to fight an epic battle. Those who resist conversion will ultimately be doomed to spend eternity in a lake of fire. After the video was done, my coworker looked at me with sadness in his eyes. “What do you think about that?” he asked. “All of us gone and enjoying eternity?” I winked at him. “I think it’s great. I’ll finally be able to get a parking spot at the mall.” But like my friend Julie says, we should stop making fun of these wingnuts and instead learn how to get rich off them. That’s why Joshua Witter, avowed atheist, is my hero. He started this website as a joke, but soon found that...

Giants Beat LA, Again
2009-05-11 00:15:00 The Giants have come a long way since their first road-series of the seaosn, in which they were swept by these Dodgers in LA. With Tim Lincecum on the mound, the Giants completed their second straight series victory over the Dodgers, and indeed, have shown that they are a much different team than the one that started the season. It's no secret that the Giants struggle to score consistently. They're ranked last in the NL in runs scored, despite the fact that they're 2 games above .500. The reason why they are where they are is simple; they can flat out pitch, as evident by another series win, despite scoring just 6 runs in 3 games. Tim Lincecum didn't have his best stuff Sunday, but his 6 innings pitched, 8 k's and 3 earned runs on 6 hits marked his fifth straight quality start and certainly good enough to win. Lincecum left the game with the Giants down a run in the seventh, and the pressure was on the Giants' bats in order for him to avoid an L and the bats answered the bell. ...

20 Tips for Designers to Beat the Recession
2009-03-27 16:36:00 This article was originally published on Yanko Design. As I know some Design Sojourn readers don't really frequent YD, I thought it might be a good idea to republish it here as well. I have also re-edited some of the text to make it more relevant to DS readers. Enjoy! It is all around us, talk of doom, gloom, job cuts, job losses and recession etc. This is not what a young designer, fresh out of school, wants to hear. It is also not what an employed designer wants to hear. However it is not the end of the road, and as long as the Earth keeps turning, there will be a tomorrow. Personally, I like to believe a recession is a time of great opportunity for everyone. Especially for forward looking designers who have the right skills and are well placed to take advantage of a recovering economy.
