Knowing The Online Behaviour Of Indian Users – Living With Internet R
2011-06-03 06:16:00 Microsoft Advertising, MEC and Mindshare today released a study entitled âLiving with the Internet â What is Driving Web behaviorâ, designed to better understand the nature of time spent online across the world. Intended to gain better insights on consumerâs web behavior and aid marketers and brands to tap into these insights, the study was undertaken across 11 countries – Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Spain, United Kingdom and the US and focused on 7,000 participants aged between 16 and 54 years old. The study finds that in India, spontaneous activity on the internet has halved in the last two years as consumers, conscious of the addictive nature of the web, try to stay focused and make better use of time spent online. This trend is consistent globally, as worldwide more than 79 per cent of respondents said that they had planned their activity on the internet in advance so that they could stay more focused and do more in less time. Ranking Search Results Via Behaviour On Facebook Through New Patent
2010-09-02 06:23:00 The giant in the Social Networking business has come up with yet another invention for which it has won relevant patent rights. Facebook has quite often patented most of its innovations and its recently patented innovation was that of The News Feed. The reason for such an initiation by Facebook to follow a systematic patenting process is to secure itself from being sued by rivals as it currently faces patent-related allegations from Microsoft. This new patent application was apparently filed six years ago whilst it was being discovered by Chris Lunt, Nicholas Galbreath and Jeff Winner. Better late than never for Facebook, this new patent is a product based majorly on interests and behavioural patterns of a userâs friends and friends of friends online. The precise definition of this patent states and I quote ââRanking search results based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of a social network who are within a predetermined degree of separationâ. Cultic Behaviour and Lack of Accountability (Sathya Sai Organization Exampl
2009-12-21 21:52:00 In mid 1982, at Puttaparthi, I spoke to two prominent devotees about concerns being raised sub voce that Sathya Sai Baba had been engaged in sexual activities with young males. One of the reports was that he been involved in such activities since he was young, and that this was quite common knowledge within Puttaparthi and district. The two were Richard Bayer, then a high official in the Sathya Sai Organization, organization, and (the late) Howard Murphet, Australian journalist and renowned author of several books on Sai Baba. Murphet was typically gracious but Bayer was shockingly rude, chastising me for daring to breathe such a topic, then turning angrily on his heel and striding away. Bayer's deplorable behaviour implied that one may not, with any trust, raise issues with Sathya Sai Baba's handpicked leaders.

Cannabis is not a cause of anti-social behaviour.
2008-06-06 02:47:00 Image via Wikipedia In the politics of drug policy in the community an emerging concern is being expressed characterised by an anti-fun, anti-youth intolerance ranging from neo-prohibitionism to a 'more rules is better than some rules' debate surrounding alcohol deficits in the community. If Cannabis is not a cause of anti-social behaviour AND cannabis is displacing alcohol and other mind altering substances it can be reasonably argued its use is ''harm minimizing" AND producing a positive social outcome. And why do those who are morally (or politically) concerned 'about drug harms' resist change (ie: "we don't need a third drug!") when cannabis is so prevalent and so benign by any comparison yet 'in their name and mine' its draconian sanction so damaging."The Advisory Council also found that cannabis use isn't actually associated with antisocial or criminal behaviour, but the public perception is that it is, because there's a lot of misleading information which confuses p...

Security Pros ignoring their own message
2008-04-25 09:17:00 As you probably know: I am Swiss. We have a saying in Switzerland (I do not know whether something like this exists in English as well) that the kids of the shoemaker always have the worst shoes? So, what about the security professionals? No, I am not talking about their shoes but what about the way they handle security? It seems that during Infosec (the information security exhibition in London) there were quite some notebook just lying around and ? even worse ? unlocked. Now, we ask the users to take care but we do not even do the basics right? I once said a few years ago that whenever I find an unlocked notebook in the office, I would add myself as a local admin (as most of us are admin on the box, this is a fairly easy task if the machine is not locked). Now, after doing that I waited for the next time we had a meeting together. It is Microsoft attitude that you take your notebook to the meetings (and some do e-mails during the meetings L). I then remotely rebooted their noteboo...

PETS BEHAVIOUR
2008-02-24 05:55:00 A new study should have cat owners purring with delight. It suggests they are somehow partly protected from the ravages of heart disease."Over a 20-year period, people who never owned a cat faced a 40-per-cent greater risk of death due to heart attack than previous or current cat owners," said the lead researcher, Adnan Qureshi, a professor at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Qureshi, who presented the findings at a medical conference in New Orleans yesterday, is at a loss to explain his study, which involved 4,435 volunteers. "The best theory we can come up with is that ... cat ownership leads to reduced stress levels which, in turn, lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease" he suggested. On the other hand, it is possible that cats don't directly shield people from heart attacks. Instead, cat owners as a group may share specific personality traits that reduce their chances of suffering from heart disease at an early age. ...

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy - the truth?
2008-02-09 14:47:00 The more I research therapies used to treat anxiety and depression the more cynical I get. I recently was told about an excellent article by a UK Art Therapist which looked at the official guidelines for using CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) to treat anxiety and depression. In the UK, a public body called the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) gives out guidelines for the use of prescription medication, surgical procedures and other non-medical treatments such as therapy. For some time the overwhelming opinion of NICE has reportedly been that CBT is the treatment of choice for anxiety and depression (with drug therapies also playing a major role). The essayist, Malcolm Learmonth, describes how NICE guidelines come in two parts: the full report which hardly anyone reads, and an abridged version. It seems that the two are actually quite different, with the abridged version making a much better case for CBT as a valid treatment than the evidence in the full version wo...

Playing chess may help children improve their behaviour
2008-01-25 12:48:00 Chess lessons might improve children’s behaviour, say researchers. The study, conducted by Aberdeen University staff, found that youngsters who started playing chess became mentally sharper and their behaviour also improved in comparison to those who did not. "The big question is why this is happening," The Scotsman quoted Dod Forrest, of the university's School of Education, as saying. "We looked at reading skills before they play chess and afterwards, and it improves significantly, but we don't fully understand it. "The social aspect could be just as important as the development of the cognitive process chess playing demands. Playing in tournaments leads to travelling about a bit and getting involved in a wider section of society, building contacts and confidence,” Forrest added. In the yearlong study, the researchers studied children from two primary schools in Aberdeen where free school meals are the norm. &nb...

Yahoo?s new Ad solution targets user behaviour, hopes to increase click thr

Even though the Yahoo! officials have assured that they follow strict privacy policy, a normal user will be quite uncomfortable knowing that everything he/ she does is tracked and stored ! I am okay with search words stored anonymously, but here Yahoo! not only tracks activities, but stores it as a user profile. Even Google stores searches done, however, user has the facility to stop storing these results. Also, I am not sure if google keeps the track of which user has searched for what ! Even with all this, I fail to understand how Yahoo! will know what banner ads user has clicked (unless they are Yahoo's own ads ) and which microsites they have visited.
