The power of Hezbollah
2008-05-22 14:42:00
Lebanon’s factions appear to have halted a nascent civil war — at least temporarily — with an agreement struck Wednesday in Qatar between the Western-backed government of Fouad Siniora and the Syrian-backed Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah. But the peace deal cannot fairly be called a compromise. Hezbollah won That’s the result of its stunning military ...

No Easy Answers in Lebanon
2008-05-20 14:24:00
Whether Lebanon veered close to “civil war” this month?a question broached by many newspapers?seems purely academic at this point, and perhaps irrelevant. Beirut settled into a tenuous calm after Lebanon’s cabinet conceded (CNN) the immediate demands of Hezbollah, but the upheaval resolved none of the many issues destabilizing the country. Lebanon’s paralyzed government, Beirut’s inability ...

Hezbollah eases up and Beirut opens its shutters
2008-05-17 00:31:00
by Franklin Lamb in Beirut Saturday Afternoon May 10 2008 witnessed a pronounced easing of tension. Is a solution at hand? Based on a US Congressional source, the Siniora government is reportedly able, with US approval, to offer the following face-saving proposal to Hezbollah to end the current crisis:1. Hezbollah can keep its landline optic telecommunication cables for use in its Resistance struggle against Israel. But they should be put under "State Control". Translation: Hezbollah controls them exclusively same as now and no one else will touch them. But 'officially' they will be under 'State' control, i.e. not State control. 2. Concerning the other major issue regarding the head of Beirut Airport Security, General Wafiq Shouqair gets reassigned but Hezbollah gets to name his replacement. Translation: Wafiq stays in office, keeps his authority and puts his deputy's name card slipped over his on the office nameplate. The public version of the proposal...
Welcome to Hizballahstan
2008-05-16 14:53:00
But by the next morning, the battle for Beirut was mostly over. After just six hours of all-out fighting, Hizballah militants were in control of areas of West Beirut that had previously been the government’s preserve. This made for some incongruous scenes. Bearded men with rifles and rocket launchers secured lingerie shops and a Starbucks ...

Lebanese minister: Hizbullah believes way to Tel Aviv passes through Beirut
2008-05-10 13:38:00
"Iran is responsible for what is happening in Lebanon. The subject now is the Iranian attack on Lebanon. They want us to surrender totally without any compensation," Lebanese Sports Minister Ahmed Fatfat said Friday during an interview with the Al-Arabiya television network Friday amid reports that Hizbullah gunmen seized control of large parts of Beirut."Hizbullah has turned from an opposition party into a militia attempting to impose its control. I think Hizbullah believes that the way to Tel Aviv passes through Beirut," he said. Hezbollah?s Beirut?s Blitz
2008-05-09 06:56:00
As many among us have warned several times over the past year, and many articles later, Hezbollah has indeed waged its expected blitzkrieg against the democratically elected Government of Lebanon. Within 24 hours, the pro-Iranian super-militia blocked all accesses to the Beirut International Airport, established an exclusive security zone around the organization’s headquarters in south Beirut, deployed its forces into several Sunni neighborhoods in the capital and erected check points across...(read more)

To clarify something about Beirut riots
2008-05-08 17:33:00
I am noticing something that the media in the west and east are ignoring the economic factor in the Lebanese issue. people do not understand that the majority of Shiites in Lebanon are from the Blue collar working classes whether from the farmers or from the labours. The last economic decisions to raise the price of fuel and diesel in Lebanon just like another Egypt made this class extremely angry especially their wages were the same ,even after the very fast small raise the cabinet had decided from two days before the protests. The Cabinet decided to raise the minimum wages to become $US 500 , useless raise in front of continuous rising prices. Again this protests were not planned by Hezbollah and allies but it was planned by the Lebanese Labour Unions on objection of the very low minimum wages there , it was planned right after the Mahalla Strike. Hezbollah and allies sponsored it as another means to form a pressure on this cabinet and force it to leave after its provoking dec...
A Cell Phone Civil War in Lebanon
2008-05-08 15:06:00
The rattle of gunfire and crump of exploding rockets that shook the near-deserted streets of Beirut Wednesday seemed to signal the arrival of the long-feared showdown between the Western-backed government and its opponents led by Hizballah. Thick plumes of black smoke from barricades of burning tyres cast a deep pall over the capital, as many ...

From Mahalla to Beirut ; more than a strike , more than a protest
2008-05-07 20:04:00
I think no one imagined things would be go this route in Beirut ,in today's labour strike and protest except of course who planned to make this way . I mean it is a decision taken in the moment to bring your weapons and start attacking the others in the protests or strike just like this , especially when it involves guns, rifles,Molotov and RBG !!No to mention the army presence !! It is more than usual riots of angry blue collars for sure and because it is Lebanon you should know that this is another round between the on going the opposition and the cabinet. It took an ugly form that reminded the people of Beirut with the civil war ,I know a friend of a friend who told her online that she hided in her bathroom along with her kids when she saw the two fighting parties with big guns in the street, It is enough to see the images to make you feel that you are back again In Beirut of the civil war . Fires every where , the way to the airport was closed and cut , the scene of young ci...

Remembering the Beirut Embassy Bombing: April 18, 1983
2008-04-19 01:47:00
Twenty-five years ago today a late model GMC truck packed with explosives slammed into the U.S. Embassy in Beirut and crashing through the lobby door. In his memoir See No Evil former CIA operative Robert Baer, who devoted much of this career to identifying the perpetrators of the bombing, “Even by Beirut standards, it was an enormous blast…” Often overshadowed by the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut only six months later (as well as the many suicide vehicle bombs since),...(read more)
Israel fears Iran may ship Hezbollah arms via Beirut port
2008-04-13 16:12:00
Israel is concerned that Iran might start moving weapons to Hezbollah by means of ships that anchor in the Beirut port, government sources in Jerusalem said. The sources said oversight of marine vessels by UNIFIL (the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) was not efficient enough to enforce an embargo on weapons shipments into Lebanon and to pinpoint such shipments.
