SEAduced in Belize!!
2008-09-03 00:34:00 Patting ourselves on the back for being such good little doobies and getting a proper night's rest, we all met up for a day of sun and fun on the SEAduced Catamaran. The crew, Sylvan, Leon and Jody, took great care of us and we had an amazing day.Eighteen of us made the trip, each bringing something yummy to eat and drink, making for a fine feast. We sailed north along the shoreline and anchored off of Mexico Rocks near some huge coral heads. Birdie and I braved the odd currents (no doubt some part of Gustav) for some snorkeling and saw our first nurse shark. Belize Birthday Bash!!
2008-09-02 15:32:00 I absolutely love surprises. I like being surprised and even better, I like surprising friends. About a month ago, when our dear friend Cindy popped off an email to me and casually invited us to the island to share her birthday with her, I politely declined. Secretly, the wheels were in motion to make a family trip to Ambergris Caye and turn up unannounced to help celebrate her special day! As you can imagine, keeping a secret on an island as small as Ambergris within a close group of ex-pats is no small feat. I coordinated our travel plans through friends Laurie and Paul (Tacogirl) and made no mention to anyone else, even to friends in Playa as word travels fast down the Costa Maya. Our mission was well accomplished and we spent a few fun filled days with Cindy and Paul, the Tacos and all the usual suspects. No trip to San Pedro would be complete without a visit to Estel's. Charlie was in good form as usual, serving up the best breakfast on the beach any...
Three Years To Belize
2008-06-07 02:59:00 As REIN members one of the best parts of belonging to a group of highly focused investors is that you constantly hear success stories that fuel you to reach your goals. One story that has really inspired me can be found on the ONE LIFE blog spot. After three years of hard work and laser beam focus to their end results, this Canadian family was able to follow their dream of seven months sailing around the Caribbean and Bahamas. The best part is all the wonderful things they do; from touring a nutmeg factory to scuba diving to burying a treasure chest to be unearthed in 20 years. Their journey seems like the perfect way to bring a family closer and really and truly spending quality time together. It's a must read and so interesting you'll want to be booking a flight as soon as you leave the blog.

Belize - Our Tips for Travelers
2008-04-13 19:08:00 First, a big thanks you to all of the wonderful people we met in our travels through the beautiful country of Belize and to all the folks that rode along with us virtually, reading the blog, offering suggestions and sending messages of well wishes. I think in my next life, I want to come back as a travel writer. As me made our way through the country, we obviously took copious notes, jotted down names and compiled lists of information to include in the weblog and for our own future use. We also began to put together our list of “should haves”, “could haves” and “would haves”, tips and recommendations for fellow adventurers traveling in Belize. I hope this will be helpful for those of you planning a similar journey and entertaining for the rest of our readers. While this one wonderful journey surely does not make us experts on Belize, we did learn and see a lot and would be happy to try to answer any questions you might have. Enjoy!Buy a proper...

Road Trip Belize - The Journey Home
2008-04-04 19:14:00 Kilometers Traveled – 339Hours in Car with Children – 5Unscheduled Potty Breaks – 1Belikins Consumed – 0Current Location – Home again LWireless Internet - Yes.I must have some good kharma due to me because I awoke without any sign of a hangover and feeling rather well. We sat and had coffee and conversation with Ron, the owner of Popeye’s Hotel, who has been on Caulker for 32 years and is a wealth of knowledge. He is a former pilot who also works as a TropicAir agent and books tours on the mainland and around the Cayes. I get the feeling he is the busiest guy on the whole island! Rob returned the golf cart and met us at the pier to catch the early water taxi back to San Pedro. We were all a little tense, anticipating another wet voyage.View from the pier back to Popeye's Hotel (hidden somewhat behind the palm trees) and beachfront bar.Morning on Caye Caulker.Tina's Backpackers' Hostel and new Anxilliou Suites. (I read Tina&...

In true Kinnon fashion, we extended our trip for another day! Yippee! Having failed at previous attempts to get a water taxi to take us to Caye Caulker, this morning we were finally able to get on one of the boats and make the journey. Lining up for the boats.Ready for another adventure! I think, by now, we have proved ourselves to be flexible travelers, not too troubled by the occasional hiccup in plans or overly picky about accommodations and service. That being said, our ride to Caulker was one of our less pleasant travel experiences on record. First, the...

One of the very few planned activities for this leg of our journey was a day of fishing. Not an afternoon spent trolling around in the hot sun, choking on diesel fumes mind you….proper fishing, casting out and reeling in, something fun for the kids. Paul H. hooked us up with Ali, the bartender at Crazy Canucks, and made arrangements for us to meet at the end of the Paradise Villas pier at noon. As planned, after a lovely breakfast at Estel’s, we met up with Ali and his mate Brian and headed out to sea.Birdie and Cole riding the bow.Captain Birdie!Beautiful healthy mangrove - the perfect place to find bait fish.Ali getting the net ready. The perfect moment.Shiny, slippery sardines.Birdie g...

I don’t think we’ve missed a meal yet! This day would certainly be no exception. I let Rob sleep in a bit and took the kids to “My Favorite Deli” this morning for breakfast. This is a great little two table kitchen we were turned on to by one of the timeshare guys the last time we were on the island. Great basic breakfast for next to nothing. Oscar, the owner, has added to his repertoire a taco table out front where locals pass by and pick up a quick bite or pack up a lunch to take away. My Secret Deli.Oscar and the girls.A real home cooked breakfast.A fresh pineapple smoothie - yum!We went back to the villa to check on Rob, who, having missed bre...

Works like a charm!!How do I describe what I’m feeling? I’m sitting on a comfy padded lounge chair, watching my children splash and play happily in a crystal clean pool, surrounded by lush landscaping and lovely villas on the shores of the Caribbean. The scene is picture postcard perfect. So, what is this feeling of uneasiness bubbling just below the surface? After a week on the road, driving through jungles, mountains and remote villages on the mainland, encountering only Belizean nationals and the occasional group of intrepid young backpackers, it feels somehow “foreign” to be in such “normal” surroundings. I feel somehow shabby in my braids and baseball cap. I wonder if everyone can tel...

He almost looked as if he was surprised to find me still there which speaks volumes to the condition of my husband upon his untimely return to our cabin in the wee hours. As I show no mercy what-so-ever, I sent him right inside to greet my husband and welcome him back to the world of the living. We opted instead to spend another night in this funky seaside village and explore a bit. Still no $$$. Panic is starting to set in and it’s still raining which is doing wonders for my mood. Determined to make the most of the day, cash reserved dwindling, we had breakfast in town at Eva’s. As everyone seemed to be able to connect to their wireless except me, I caught up on a bit of writing. One day, I hope to actually be able to post all this to the internet as promised. Turns out, our debit card from Bancomer WHERE ALL OF OUR MONEY IS doesn’t seem to work here in Belize. We have started to panic and scramble trying to figure out how to get money transferred to our US bank account. Shouldn’t be too tough, right? Turns out, as it is the week before Easter, today is a bank holiday in Mexico…as is Friday…as is Monday. Super. So now we have to find someone with a US bank account (preferably with money in it) to send a transfer to our account. We’ve got some options, all of whom promise to have it done TODAY. Super. Our destination, Crooked Tree Village, is located just 45 minutes south off of the Northern Highway. The drive was quick and we had no trouble finding the turn-off into town. It was pitch dark when we arrived, starving and without a place to stay. We pulled over to the first lit building we came upon and asked for some direction. It is times like these in our travels that Rob and I ask each other “WWMD?”…&hel-lip; not “WWJD” (the well known acronym “What Would Jesus Do?”) but rather “WWMD”, meaning “What Would Mike Do?” (referring to our dear friend Mike who li...
Not Going to Belize
2008-03-19 17:55:00 Not Going to BelizeI am not going to Belize. Nope. I will not enter that country this time around. Why? Because it is expensive and I would have to pay $19 to leave the place. Charge me $19 to enter somewhere, and I may think about it, as I would be paying to get something - the joy of being in the country. Charge me $19 to leave somewhere and I must ask, “What the hell for?” I am obviously not receiving anything for that $19 fee. It is just a final slap in the face for the poor vagrant who had already grown use to paying $20 a night for lodging and an incalulatable amount for food.Perhaps this is a last ditch attempt to drain the last remaining dollar out of travelers who had already had loads of money squeezed out of them by the tourist trap that Belize seems to be. ¨Get em one last time at the border!" Belize is expensive. I cannot figure out why the cost of traveling in Belize seems to be beyond that of Western Europe or the USA. I must conclude that it is this expensive so...

Our guide for the day, Ignacio, knew the river like the back of his hand and stopped periodically to point out various critters living on its banks. The first leg of our journey would bring us to another pick up spot where another tour group, all shipped in from San Pedro, would board. In Belize We Trust, And Now Register Posted By : Wolfgang Jaegel
2008-03-01 13:17:00 The offshore services community is well aware of its location and its benefits. There are however a number of skeptics who believe that Belize is not a prime offshore destination. However, it could cost more. The current $100 annual IBC registration fee is very inexpensive. The astoundingly quick registration, could also take longer. That last time I used my credit card, I kicked myself. You see, I'm trying out this whole negative reinforcement thing. Anyway, the point is that we should try not to spend so much and start saving more. Maybe what's in order is a financial planning education course. Read more about finance and credit cards.
