Benjamin Franklin?s Pursuit of the Virtuous Life
2008-06-06 17:00:00 For the past 13 weeks, The Art of Manliness has been running a series entitled “The Virtuous Life.” Each week they took a look at each one of Benjamin Franklin’s 13 virtues and how men could implement them in their life. Today “virtue” has taken on soft and effeminate connotations. But originally, the word “virtue” was inextricably connected to what it meant to be a true man. The word comes from the Latin virtus, which in turn is derived from vir, Latin for “manliness.” These days guys excuse their lack of virtue by hiding behind the excuse of being “just a guy.” Men need to do better and strive to improve themselves each day. It’s time to restore the tie between manliness and virtue. What follows is a summary of the entire series with links to each virtue. We hope you found the series helpful and will revisit it in the future for inspiration. Lessons in Manliness: Benjamin Frankl...

Bob Dylan & Benjamin Franklin, Different Heads Same Octopus
2008-02-02 23:38:00 Mr. PresidentI confess that there are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them: For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment, and to pay more respect to the judgment of others. Most men indeed as well as most sects in Religion, think themselves in possession of all truth, and that wherever others differ from them it is so far error. Steele a Protestant in a Dedication tells the Pope, that the only difference between our Churches in their opinions of the certainty of their doctrines is, the Church of Rome is infallible and the Church of England is never in the wrong. But though many private persons think almost as highly of their own infallibility as of t...

Benjamin Franklin On Frugality
2007-11-23 15:44:00 Benjamin Franklin is my new hero. He's totally quoteable, and much of what he had to say back in 1776 is as valid today as it was back them. - So without further verbiage, here are ten of Franklin's better quotes on Frugality.1. A man may, if he knows not how to save as he gets, keep his nose all his life to the grindstone, and die not worth a groat at last.2. Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.3. Buy what thou hast no need of, and before long thou shalt sell thy necessaries.4. A fat kitchen makes a lean will.5. Many estates are spent in the getting, Since women for tea forsook spinning and knitting, And men for punch forsook hewing and splitting.6. Think of saving as well as of getting: the Indies have not made Spain rich, because her outgoes are greater than her incomes.7. Women and wine, game and deceit, Make the wealth small, and the wants great.8. What maintains one vice, would bring up two children.9. Who dainties love, shall beggars prove.10. Foo...

10 Timeless Lessons From Benjamin Franklin
2007-04-10 12:40:00 What makes a leader? Intelligence, passion, strength, devotion, charisma, tenacity, perseverance, generosity, forgiveness?Franklin possessed all of these qualities and that is why he is considered to be one of the greatest American minds. He seems to embody and personify the American dream. Born the son of a candle maker, few people would have surmised that Franklin would master so many disciplines. His story proves that with determination and dedication, success is within anyone?s grasp.Franklin is perhaps the single most multi-talented figure in American history. His accomplishments are too varied to fully describe here; they include signing the Declaration of Independence, serving as postmaster of Philadelphia, founding the first American fire insurance company, living in Paris as American ambassador to France, and inventing useful objects like the lightning rod, the Franklin stove, and bifocal glasses. He was like a Microsoft founding father. He earned a bundle and retired at 42,...

Was Benjamin Franklin right ?
2006-10-31 00:58:00 Benjamin Franklin is credited with writing: "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." Is what Benjamin Franklin said still valid today?MRB:YES HE WASTo give up any liberty is a risk but to do it out of fear is a tragedy. Not only that but when a free nation like ours gives up something -- or imposes that loss on select citizens out of our fear -- a great sense of trust must exist between the government and the citizens who elected it.We have to remember in this argument that we are always giving up tiny pieces of our liberty and freedom. I must stop at red lights and not drive 60 miles per hour through school zones. I can't shout FIRE! in a theater. That's why we have these things called laws and fines and jails to house those people who think they are better than the rest of the citizenry. I'd say being in jail constitutes a loss of freedom, wouldn't you? But I'd also say these restrictions make us feel a li...
