Berkshire Hathaway unit buys Koenig & Strey, Tweeps respond
2009-09-01 23:46:00
By now you've probably heard that Home Services of America, Inc., a unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, has purchased Koenig & Strey, one of Chicago's largest local brokerages. K&S's 900 employees will retain the company name and operate as a franchisee of Brookfield Residential Properties' North American Network, according to a press release from Home Services of America. View the full Crain's article on ChicagoNow here. What I find interesting are some of the Twitter responses to the news, especially from local real estate professionals who seem to welcome the idea. K&S had closed seven offices in the area in the past year, but now the mood among Chicago Realtors seems to have lifted. Here's some of my favorite tweets...

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B): Still a 'gem'
2009-04-07 15:00:00
"Though 2008 was tough for Warren Buffett, we feel Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.B) is well-positioned for the year ahead," says Paul Tracy in his StreetAuthority Market Advisor."For only the second time in the investment-based company's 44 years, Buffett saw the book value of Berkshire drop."Of course his book value decline of 9.6% should be put in context with the 37% loss incurred by the S&P 500."Credit rating agencies Moody's and Fitch both downgraded Berkshire's "AAA" credit rating and S&P is looking to do the same."And just for a little salt in the wound, Buffett was bumped out of the top spot on Forbes' list of the world's richest people, unseated by Bill Gates."In his annual letter to Berkshire shareholders, Buffett was candid about both his mistakes and successes in 2008. Of his mistakes, he listed taking a position in ConocoPhillips when oil and gas prices were near their...

Berkshire Hathaway Now Largest Shareholder of Kraft Foods
2008-02-17 17:04:00
Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway has become the largest shareholder of Kraft Foods controlling 8.6 percent of the company. According to Tom Russo, Manager at Gardner Russo & Gardner, stated that "Kraft's a portfolio of iconic brands in a company that was undermanaged for quite a long time." Warren Buffet has been acquiring a lot of companies recently at discount prices, and his stock picks are often followed by investors who watch his every move. Using the that strategy over the last 25 years would have netted an annualized return of 25 percent more then double the S&P 500. Krafts Foods traded up 6.9 percent, their largest one day gain since June 2001.

Barron's Pans Buffett's Berkshire
2007-12-17 20:22:00
When I heard the media reporting that the Barron's cover story this weekend was a piece warning investors that shares of Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) were overvalued, I was both surprised and in agreement. I think many publications would avoid panning Berkshire's investment merits, even if they believe the stock to be too high, just because we are talking about the greatest investor who has ever lived. On the other hand, the case that BRK is overvalued is pretty strong, so from that standpoint, Barron's might be doing investors a favor by pointing it out.I didn't read the full article, but the news wires are reporting that Barron's concluded that BRK is about 10% overvalued at current levels. I decided to take a quick look at the stock's valuation to see if I agreed with that. I was already aware that Berkshire's P/E was well above 20, which is why I do not own any shares in the company, but at that same time, one could surely argue that most of Berkshire's value should not be ...

Warren Buffett's company has bought 10.1 million shares of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. since Thursday, increasing the legendary investor's stake in the nation's No. 2 railroad to nearly 14.8 percent. Berkshire said National Indemnity now holds 26.1 million shares, Columbia Insurance Company holds 24.7 million shares and National Fire & Marine Insurance Company holds 1.3 million shares. Because the purchases are by subsidiaries, it's not clear whether Buffett himself made the decision to buy. Buffett has said in the past tha

Berkshires Net Rises 33 Pct On 13 Pct Revenue Growth
2007-08-10 07:42:00
Berkshire Hathaway saw its net income climb 33% during 2Q07 on a strong performance by its insurance-underwriting business. Revenue climbed just 13% but a 70% jump in its insurance-underwriting operating income helped pad earnings growth. Weakness in Berkshire's U.S. construction and housing-related businesses tempered what would have been even further gains. Total net was $3.118 billion, good for EPS of $2,018, versus consensus estimates of just $1,444.18 a share. Revenue during the quarter was $27.35 billion, compared with $24.19 billion a

Is Berkshire Hathaway a Buy at $111,000?
2007-07-19 19:21:00
When I first read this article, I wasn't sure what to think about it. Joe Ponzio took a very subjective approach to valuing Berkshire Hathaway and for that I think he is at least following Warren Buffett's methodology. As Buffett himself has said, "You are neither right nor wrong because the crowd disagrees with you. You are right because your data and reasoning are right." Joe Ponzio shows us that shareholder equity for Berkshire has grown roughly 8.8% a year over the past ten years and that it has a net worth of $108.4 billion. Fr

Berkshire Immigration Whining
2007-06-07 14:26:00
Derek Gentile pens a story in today's Berkshire Eagle lamenting the strong arm tactics of local law enforcement officials concerning immigrants in the county. Apparently, some LE types are more concerned with a person's citizenship status then the offense committed, if I gather the gist of the story correctly. My take on this is as follows: If you are here in the good ol' U.S. of A. LEGALLY, then you should have no problem verifying your status to any LE official who inquires about it. The people in the story who are whining the loudest seem to have all been here ILLEGALLY, because they are being detained for deportation. I'm relatively sure people of other countries are not being singled out and there is no immigration profiling going on here. It's just some good LE officials doing their jobs correctly, in my humble opinion.

Confit of Berkshire Pork Belly with Fennel and Apple
2007-04-12 18:58:00
Pork and apples and fennel.. how wrong can one get? Not very I suppose. Ye old trusted combination, reworked time and again by cooks all over. Indeed, there is good reason why the term "classic pairings" exists. The pork was marinated with rosemary, bay leaves, pepper and lots of salt and sugar overnight. The next day, it was drained and rinsed twice. Then, the meat was submerged in oil (or lard) and baked in a 120 degree celsius oven for 3 hours. When done, it was left to cool in the fat, and stored for a week in the fridge to allow the tasty flavours to fully develop, just as with all other confits. Pan fry the pork when needed, simply to warm through and crispen the skin. I dished it up with shaved fennel and apples dressed with a mustard vinaigrette (mustard goes well with pork too!). I also added caramelised apple and chorizo sausage slices to make it a meal fit for a hungry man like myself.Technorati tags: food and drink, food, brisbane, food blogs, slow food, kitchen expediti...
