Berries for longer life
2008-05-15 18:57:00
Health can be a berry awayHimalayan Goji berries are considered to be the most nutritious food source on the planet. These are grown in fertile valleys in the Tibetan and Mongolian Himalayas. They are far richer in antioxidants than any other comparable food source tested by ORAC labs. Our wholesale price is significantly lower than that of any competitor we know of. This is because we buy Goji berries in such large volume and have developed longstanding ties with our suppliers. You can also buy Goji seeds for planting and seaweed fertilizer, which complements the Goji seedlings and plants, as well.   People who eat Goji Berries and or drink Goji Juice on a regular basis are known to rarely suffer from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, or many other diseases that commonly afflict people of the Western Civilization. So far I have been lucky in that part, over the last 13 generations my grandfathers have lived to be over 75, 2 lived to be over 86 in the ...

French Toast Souffle with Summer Berries
2008-05-13 03:09:00
[NB: A huge "THANK YOU" to all of you who sent good wishes my way yesterday. I really wasn't intending to sound so "woe-is-me" (I do that quite enough around the diet issues, thank you), but just reflecting on how the day could elicit positive vibes for all concerned.  Your comments sure worked toward that end for me, though: big hugs to all of you! ] In my mind, here’s the perfect way to wake up on a Sunday morning:  Outside, the weather is balmy. A mild breeze whispers through the slightly opened window, curtains undulating softly with each invisible breath.  The sun makes its presence known through the diaphanous curtain as it tickles the pillows of our bed with little sparkles of laughing light. Elsie pads quietly over to my side of the bed and, as gently as a rose petal floating to the ground, taps my open palm with her soft, moist nose. I open my eyes slowly. Glancing toward the window, I stretch luxuriously and think, ”Ahh, yes! Another lovely, su...

How to Freeze Blueberries
2008-04-29 12:18:00
Freezing blueberries is a great way to always have fresh blueberries on hand. I use frozen blueberries most often in smoothies and fruit sorbets. First wash them well and pat them dry. Discard any bad ones. Place blueberries on a cookie sheet with a lip in a single layer and freeze for 24 hours. The reason for this is so they won't freeze together in a giant blueberry clump. After about 24 hours, move them to plastic freezer bags or an airtight container and keep frozen until ready for use. Related Content How to Freeze Strawberries How to Freeze Bananas

How to Freeze Strawberries
2008-04-25 03:18:00
Since strawberries often go bad before you can eat them all, freezing them is a good way to keep them on hand for smoothies, jam, and other recipes that call for strawberries. I recommend buying only organic strawberries since non organic strawberries are one of the fruits that contain the most pesticide residue. To freeze strawberries, first wash them well and remove the stems and leaves, then pat them dry. You can freeze them whole or slice them before freezing depending on what you plan to use them for. Place strawberries on a cookie sheet with a lip in a single layer and freeze for 24 hours. The reason to freeze them on the cookie sheet for the first 24 hours is so they won't freeze together in a clump. After about 24 hours, move them to plastic freezer bags or an airtight container and keep frozen until ready for use. Related Content How to Freeze Bananas

The Thing About Nuts and Berries
2008-04-20 20:42:00
I assume that most of you are like me and full-frontal male nudity doesn't shock you or send you into fits of hysterical laughter. I mean, you and I watch so much man-porn that we are desensitized to guys flashing their nuts and berries. So when star Jason Segel exposes himself in his full glory in the opening moments of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, we're not going to find this particularly funny?especially since the media has made such a big deal about this scene, saying that it's "daring" and deeming it some kind of cinematic comic highlight. If this is the best the film has to offer, you think, it's going to be a looooong afternoon at the movies. However, much to our surprise, this break-up comedy is indeed hilarious. In fact, one scene (involving a pig) is so damn funny that we start choking on our popcorn. We did, of course, suspect that we would enjoy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. We loved Jason Segel's bumbling yet lovable drummer in Freaks and Geeks and his doting yet frighten...

Wushu Department, Guangzhou sport university, Guangzhou 510500, China. The aim of this study was to determine the modulatory effect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) on the oxidative stress induced by an exhaustive exercise. 32 male Wistar rats were taken in the study. The experiment was a 30-day exhaustive exercise program. We determined the lipid peroxidation, glycogen levels, and anti-oxidant enzyme activities in skeletal muscle. The results demonstrated that L. barbarum polysaccharides administration significantly increases glycogen level and anti-oxidant enzyme activities, and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) level and creatine kinase activities. In conclusion, L. barbarum polysaccharides administration can significantly decrease the oxidative stress induced by the exhaustive exercise. Information on Planting Goji Berries
2008-04-07 02:01:00
The Goji plant is quite hardy. It likes full sun except in hot climates. What else would you expect from a plant that originated in the Himalayas? Hopefully you’re not in a hurry for the berries. The shrubs don’t usually bear fruit until about the third year. But you can use the leaves in a salad while you wait. You’ll know your shrubs are about to bear fruit because you’ll start to get small purple/white trumpet flowers from summer until the first freeze. You can get your Goji shrub to become more bushy by nipping buds so that it forms more branches. A wide variety of animals such as rabbits, birds and deer also like to snack on Goji berries . Beware of the tomato worm and other insects. Tags: growing goji, goji berry plants, goji berries, gogi, goji, goji berry
10 Health Benefits of Mulberries
2008-04-04 04:05:00
I'm a huge fan of berries of all kinds, but I'd never had a mulberry until I saw a bag of dried mulberries in Whole Foods the other day and decided to give them a try. I didn't know anything about mulberries, which are also known as morus fruits, except that they are mentioned in the popular nursery rhyme, "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush." I guess I've been missing out because they taste great and they're full of nutrition. They are considered an important food remedy in Chinese medicine. Here are ten health benefits. It should be noted that many of these benefits have not been scientifically verified but are traditional folk remedies that have developed in countries where mulberries have been eaten for hundreds of years. Cancer Prevention Mulberries are a good source of resveratrol, a potent phytonutrient also found in grapes that researchers believe can prevent cancer and aid in the fight of existing cancers. You can grow Goji berries as house plants also provided you can provide them with ample light. It could be grown with the help of strong full spectrum artificial light or you can put the plant near a window that receives direct sunlight for at least eight to ten hours a day. But it is always better to grow them outside although you can grow them indoors also. But for that you would have to pollinate the flowers by hand. Goji Berries Are A True Superfood
2008-03-30 04:12:00
Goji Berries qualify as a true 'superfood'. They are the superstars of antioxidants and those grown in the pristine, magical Himalayan Mountains of Tibet are the most powerful and nutritious in the world.Antioxidants really are the key building block for any anti-aging program. I wanted to find the most powerful antioxidant in the world and I wondered where to find a pristine, toxic free location to source it. All my inquiries led to Goji Berries as the premier antioxidant and Tibet as the pristine source for Organic/Wild Crafted Goji Berries. The more I learned about these Tibetan Goji Berries, the more I was impressed and awed by their nutritional value. As, an antioxidant, it is a powerhouse. Inconsistent Berries Give Inconsistent Results
2008-03-10 22:01:00
When scientific studies were first initiated to confirm the traditionally observed benefits of goji berries, they did not yield uniformly positive results. It could have been foreseen that these studies would arrive at inconsistent conclusions, as they were performed using the whole dried berries. There can be tremendous variation in the quality of dried fruits, depending upon how they were harvested, dehydrated and stored, and also depending upon the quality of the fresh berries from which they were made. While goji berries grow in a lot of places, their quality can vary enormously. The same is true in the growing of wine grapes. How is it that the Chardonnay grapes of one vineyard will yield a spectacular vintage, while the same grapes in a neighboring field will produce wines that are merely ordinary? A few minutes more of daily sunshine or a little better drainage in one field or the other can make all the difference between a $100 bottle of Dom Perignon and a $10 ...

Compounds in Goji Berries and Other Plants May Prevent Blood Clots
2008-02-28 23:09:00
Compounds in Goji Berries and Other Plants May Prevent Blood Clots: ARS researchers have recently identified, characterized, and synthesized two plant compounds, which might inhibit blood clotting. The research, led by Dr. Jae Park at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center’s Phytonutrients Laboratory, could lead to a range of food additives and supplements that reduce the risks of heart disease and strokes. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is characterized by the buildup of fat, calcium and protein that form plaque. Fatty plaque can heighten the onset of blood clots, caused by an aggregation of platelets, and lead to heart attacks or strokes. After excessive screening of different phytochemicals, Park identified N-Caffeoyldopamine, N-Couraroyldopamine, and their analogs, as the best compounds for further study. These compounds are found naturally in foodstuffs such as Goji Berries, cocoa, and sweet peppers. The compounds work by inhibiting key reactions that may lead to bl...

Natural Purple Pigments In Fruits, Vegetables And Berries, Such As Blueberr
2008-02-14 16:29:00
ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2008) — Scientists in Arkansas are reporting new evidence that natural pigments responsible for the beautiful blue/purple/reddish color of certain fruits and vegetables may help prevent obesity. Their animal study however, reports that eating the whole fruit containing these pigments seems to be less effective than eating an extract of the berry.   Here's to purple power: Colorful pigments found in the skin of blueberries, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables may help prevent obesity, according to recent animal studies. (Credit: Courtesy of USDA Agricultural Research Service) Ronald L. Prior and colleagues, who did the new study, note that past research has shown that the pigments -- called anthocyanins -- prevent obesity in laboratory mice fed a high-fat diet. Anthocyanins are found in grape skins, blueberries, blackberries, purple corn, and other foods. The mice also had other healthful changes in disease-related substances found in th...
