Peep Jousting
2009-03-29 16:58:00
Easter is a wonderful holiday rich with the new birth heralded by the coming of Spring, the Resurrection of Christ, brand new Easter outfits, newly bloomed tulips, fuzzy bunnies, baskets filled with candy, glistening glazed hams ... and Peep Jousting.I happen to live in the Peep capital of the world, the place where the beloved Peep is made; Just Born, Inc. in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Most people enjoy these little guys straight-up and quite a few like them stale, but I prefer them jousting. Yes, it's true - I don't like to eat Peeps. My kids love them and can't seem to get enough, but I like setting up and watching the Peep Joust. Here's our latest Peep Joust adventure:Jousters at the Ready!JOUST!(Laughter and commentary provided by myself, my husband and my oldest daughter)Sadness on both sides...Bloody Aftermath© 2009 cookingwithanne.com. Christmas Miscellanies
2008-12-05 15:54:00
Wow, we’re talking about Christmas already.  Time sure flies! More and more businesses are removing “Christmas” from Christmas.  Happy Holidays from Costco and others….  Personally, however, I’m not too disturbed when our secular nation rejects a Christian holiday.  For the first 300 years of Christianity all secular nations rejected all Christian holidays, and they persecuted us ...

The Search For Cheap Gas - Best Gas Prices In Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton,

Gas has been putting a strain on my wallet more than usual lately, as it likely has everyone else.I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm always trying to find the cheapest fill stations without driving out of my way to get there.I've put together a list of the Lehigh Valley's cheaper gas stations, and I use the term "cheap" very, very loosely. All prices listed below are for regular unleaded fuel. The following stations (Bethlehem, PA only) were searched using a 18017 zip code:Giant - 2918 Easton Ave. - $3.27Hess - 3283 Easton Ave. - $3.29Hess - 201 Broadway - $$3.29Gulf - 2900 Easton Ave. - $3.29Gulf - 1118 Pembroke Rd. - $3.29The following stations (Allentown, PA only) were searched using a 18101 zip code:Hess - 1043 Lehigh St. - $3.25Hess - 2245 Lehigh St. - $3.27WaWa - 2209 Lehigh St. - $3.27N/A (Airport Rd. Bethlehem Township School Zone A Disaster Zone
2008-04-03 19:59:00
I've been debating whether or not to blog about this, but after what I saw today I feel I have to. I didn't want to start stepping on other people's toes here, but now I think I need to. There is a school zone on Hecktown Road in Bethlehem Township that students from East Hills Middle School, Freedom High School and the Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School use daily. The speed limit, during the zone hours, is 15 mph.People rarely go the speed limit during the zone hours, but can you blame them? The zone lacks an authoratative presence and has lately been monitored by one of those pesky crosswalk cones. I've also noticed that this cone is not there every day, despite what people say.But this is only the beginning of my complaint. This particular crosswalk does have an authority figure - a crossing guard - who's job, I assume, is to halt and alert traffic so children can safely cross this busy road. Trust me, in the morning and afternoon zone hours, this is a decently busy r...

Beyond Banksy: artists are finding practical paths to change
2008-01-23 23:10:00
In a piece for the New Statesman, veteran political artist Peter Kennard believes we are living through "an exciting time for political art"?and I'm definitely not one to disagree. While Banksy continues to grab the headlines, Kennard argues he's just the poster boy for a increasingly influential movement of artists whose political commitments are communicated on canvas, in clay, and in the case of Santa's Ghetto, on 425 miles of concrete wall that imprisons Palestinians in their own land. Sticking up a poster or painting the Separation Wall in the West Bank might sound inconsequential, but these are highly practical ways to help, in contrast to the intellectual interventions prevalent in much contemporary art. They contribute to a town and a people that are having their lifeblood strangled out of them. In this context, it is important that the work communicates directly to the Palestinian people. While there has been a move to take on contemporary issues in a direct way in the...
Mosque near Bethlehem burned down by Israeli settlers
2008-01-03 21:01:00
Uruknet A group of Israeli settlers torched an historic mosque in the town of Al-Khader, near Bethlehem, on Tuesday. The settlers used 20 beehives as fuel for the fire, after stealing the beehives from a Palestinian farm located near the mosque. Israeli Occupation Casts Shadow Over Bethlehem
2007-12-28 17:41:00
By Ben White At this time of year, faced with occupation and threats from extremists, Palestinian Christians have little to celebrate. Writing for The Times recently, Michael Gove lashed out at the seasonal focus on contemporary Bethlehem's plight under Israeli occupation. "Demonizing" Israel, apparently, has become as festive as "eggnog lattes." Gove is at least partly correct. Christmas

Zionist Christmas in Bethlehem
2007-12-26 17:23:00
Via my friend Joachim Martillo (his blog is EEAZI - Ethnic Ashkenazim Against Zionist Israel), here is a belated Christmas present for my readers. It's called Bethlehem Christmas Cancelled: The Wall Must Fall. There are more such videos on this Youtube page here. The video is well-done and focuses on the Israeli "Security Wall" or "Apartheid Wall", whichever you prefer, that currently wraps around much of Bethlehem. The Wall has economically strangled the town also.Bethlehem used to be about 80% Christian, but although figures like 20% Christian are still tossed around (mostly by Zionists), the correct figure is probably around ~35%. There has been a substantial exodus from the town in recent years. There has been a lot of talk about the reasons for this exodus, with Zionists focusing on Muslim discrimination against and attacks upon Christians. The truth is that most of the Christian exodus is economic. Bethlehem is now hemmed in by the Wall and checkpoints on all entrances to the o...

When Was The Birth Of Jesus Christ, Really?
2007-12-24 17:01:00
There are many who don’t believe that December 25 is the day on which Christ Jesus was born more than 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem, Israel. They are not wrong. For even many discerning Christians recognize this, and know that Christmas was birthed out of a pagan winter observance. So when was Christ Jesus’ birth? Today, with the help ...
Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem (Revisited)
2007-12-23 20:26:00
by William A. Cook Oh, little town of Bethlehem, How strange you seem tonight! Above the dark foreboding sky, The stars now hide their light, The streets below dare not show The everlasting light. What hopes and fears are mingled here, In dread, this sacred night? Oh, Christ was born of Mary So many years ago, While mortals sang of peace on earth On lonely hills below. But, now, I hear no songs Proclaim the holy birth; No praises sing to God the King, There is no peace on earth! Beyond the town, the Wall surrounds The people bound within; The soldiers cry and curse the sky To scoff the Joy He’s giv’n. Upon the Wall, in colors bright, They paint, “Peace,”to ridicule The King of Peace, the Son of God, To mock Him as the fool! Oh, Holy Child of Bethlehem Where are your children now? Why have they fled this holy place Where Christ was born, this town, So dear to all, where peace and love Reside, as Jesus taught, In friend and foe alike, The source of Peace above? Oh, do...
O little town of Bethlehem - 2007 version
2007-12-22 10:15:00
O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!Your land's divided by a wall built up so very high.Israel has put it there they say for their securityHow sad we see the ancient place of Christ's nativityChristians are moving from the place where their dear Lord was born.Farmers cannot get to the fields. They cannot sow their corn.Ten percent of Arab lands enclosed by IsraelFor Palestinians, Holy Land is now a living hellHow silently, how silently, the West stays at this plight;Of suffering oh so far away, well out of narrow sightOf those who think that prophecy can justify the sinOf stealing land, dividing folk from their own kith and kin.O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;Cast out our sin, bring peace on earth, injustice take away. But first you must change hearts and minds, our Lord Emmanuel!May Jews and Arabs live as one renewed by your Gospel.--

Bethlehem Or Nazareth?
2007-12-17 08:29:00
It appears that the Vatican has done it again, i.e. changed what is clearly stated in the Bible, God’s Word, to something else at their whim and fancy. This time, it has to do with where our Lord Jesus Christ was at His birth. Now, I don’t care much for putting up the Christmas tree or nativity ...

Bethlehem banks on Banksy to boost tourism
2007-12-04 00:55:00
In a creative bid to boost Bethlehem's sagging economy, Banksy has brought his seasonal "Santa's Ghetto" exhibition to this Palestinian town that has seen few tourists in recent years. The infamous stencil artist joined several others in creating over a dozen works on the concrete wall surrounding the town, turning a hated symbol of Israeli occupation into an massive open air art gallery. Another dozen or so works are on display in a former chicken shop in Manger Square. In more peaceful years more than 100,000 tourists would pour into Bethlehem during the holidays. Last year the town saw a mere tenth of the traffic. Having visited Bethlehem in December a few years back I can personally attest to the recent drought of visitors. With over 70 percent of the workforce depending on tourism, signs of a wounded economy are everywhere. ?You wouldn?t worry about Christmas becoming too commercial in Bethlehem ? they couldn?t afford it. There?s more festive lights in the window of your ...

Bethlehem Police Officer Sues City, Department & Union 6 Days After Lopez
2007-07-17 07:27:00
As if it wasn't bad enough that a paralyzed man, represented by lawyer John P. Karoly Jr., is suing the Bethlehem Police Department, Bethlehem City Police Officer Russell Lande has jumped on the bandwagon. Lande was present during Reynaldo Lopez's beating but did nothing to stop it, except say "tone it down" to an officer allegedly dragging Lopez to the back of a police cruiser.Lande is suing the City of Bethlehem, the Bethlehem City Police Department and its union on nine different counts, including a violation to the Pennsylvania Whistleblowers Law, which allows employees of a public sector to file a civil action against an employer without being discharged, threatened, discriminated, etc.But the reporting by The Morning Call is anything but complete.Though the article says that Lande was subject to "an increasingly hostile work environment," it doesn't specify how or by whom. Though, Commissioner Randall Miller and Lt. David Strawn have been named as defendants in the suit.Lan...

There?s Still Time. Use the Bethlehem Bible Reading Plan.
2007-01-13 02:23:01
There is still time to use the Bethlehem Baptist Bible Reading Plan this year.  My church (Bethlehem) has been using the Discipleship Journal plan for fifteen or more years now.  And we have come up with some great bookmarks with the plan on them.  The bookmarks are free (see side one here and side two here) and would be a great help in reading through the Bible this year. The plan is unique in that it has you reading in 4 places each day, and also gives you only 25 assigned readings per month.  This helps if you miss one or two days, because you don’t have to feel like you’ll never be able to catch up.  If you do the plan faithfully, you’ll have five or six days at the end of each month to do some personal study of your own. If you have already begun another plan, it would be simple to switch to this one.  The bookmarks are easy to print off and use.  Also, let me encourage you to plan on memorizing verses this year.  Bethlehem has a fighter memory verse plan whic...
What Would Happen If The Virgin Mary Came To Bethlehem Today
2006-12-24 09:27:01
By Johann Hari24 December 2006 The IndependentIn two days, a third of humanity will gather to celebrate the birth pains of a Palestinian refugee in Bethlehem - but two millennia later, another mother in another glorified stable in this rubble-strewn, locked-down town is trying not to howl.Fadia Jemal is a gap-toothed 27-year-old with a weary, watery smile. "What would happen if the Virgin Mary came to Bethlehem today? She would endure what I have endured," she says.Fadia clutches a set of keys tightly, digging hard into her skin as she describes in broken, jagged sentences what happened. "It was 5pm when I started to feel the contractions coming on," she says. She was already nervous about the birth - her first, and twins - so she told her husband to grab her hospital bag and get her straight into the car. They stopped to collect her sister and mother and set out for the Hussein Hospital, 20 minutes away. But the road had been blocked by Israeli soldiers, who said nobody was allowed ...
Christmas Time In Bethlehem
2006-12-21 15:58:03
The Western World is shopping for Christmas. Christmas for Western societies is perhaps the most important economic event. During this time of mass consumption, when goods of all kinds are purchased, in Bethlehem; the birthplace of Jesus Christ, it is a somber, desperate time, for the inhabitants. If you believe in Christmas, Bethlehem may be no place for you. The Little Town, since antiquity an emotional world capital of Christianity, is steadily becoming a city without Christians. The exodus of Bethlehem's Christian Palestinians, spurred by Israel's military occupation and settlement policies, the violence and upheaval of the intifada, as well as beckoning opportunities in the Americas and elsewhere, has left a town that was 80 percent Christian in 1948, to one that is now 85 percent Muslim.Read more*Christmas 2006:Is Jesus still a Palestinian? The Hamas government, often labelled by the international community as Islamic militants, has promised to donate US$50,000 to prepare Bethl...
Pausing on the Road to Bethlehem: A Spiritual Journey through Advent
2006-11-30 16:59:00
As it does every year, Advent comes upon us much too quickly, and we get caught up in the whirlwind of activities and preparations that lead to Christmas. It will be January before we know what hit us. We will have rushed through another Advent, hardly stopping to take a breath and wonder at the good news of Emmanuel, “God with us.” This study pack is designed for those who want to slow down and sink into the Advent season. It is inspirational and devotional in nature, an experiential Advent-ure through the weeks of Advent. During these five sessions we will utilize music, art, poetry, and a variety of interactive activities centered on biblical passages that connect to Advent. Each session includes a Bible passage that relates to Advent; time for guided prayer using a unique format each week; thoughtful reflection on music, art, and poetry; guided meditation; suggestions for continuing the Advent-ure during the week. This Advent-ure isn’t for everyone. It is for those who wa...
