Bharti: KKR to invest $250 mln in tower unit
2008-02-07 12:59:00 MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's top mobile operator, Bharti Airtel, said on Wednesday private equity Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co (KKR) had agreed to invest $250 million in its tower unit. Bharti Infratel owns 20,000 mobile towers and 42 percent in a joint venture company, Indus Towers, along with Britain's Vodafone and No. 6 mobile firm Idea Cellular. In December, the New Delhi-based mobile operator had said it was selling a 9 percent stake in the tower unit for $1 billion to seven international investors, including Singapore's Temasek, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup. India is the fastest growing mobile services market that has been adding about eight million subscribers a month. The outlook for growth is huge as rising incomes, cheap tariffs and expansion of networks to rural areas boost demand. With 233.6 million subscribers at end-December, only slightly over a fifth of India's population has access to a mobile phone now. On Monday, smaller rival Reliance Communications sai...

Reliance and Bharti-Wal-Mart can learn a lesson from ITC
2008-01-06 18:35:00 By Vipin Agnihotri No one is going to argue with the fact that India is on the threshold of a retail revolution. In my opinion, in few portions India has already traversed some way down that path. But there are some portions, such as allowing foreign direct investment in the retail sector that India needs some more work. Agri-retailing in India also need a lot of work. According to experts, the business model of agri-retailing consists of sourcing farm produce directly from farmers and then selling them to end-consumers. The best part about this model is that it get rid of the middlemen from the value chain, which in turn gives both farmers and end consumers better prices. In addition, it also gives retailer a substantial margin. But it has been noticed that middlemen have substantial political clout. Seeing their profits disappearing, these middlemen have now struck back. Not so long ago, political ?mobocracy? has derailed Reliance Retail?s push into Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal...

FieldFresh: Vital component in the Bharti diversification
2007-12-06 05:17:00 By Vipin Agnihotri While the Bharti group is mostly in the media at present for its Wal-Mart tie up and its stand on spectrum allocation in telecom, few realize that FieldFresh, which is a relatively obscure Bharti venture, could prove to be a vital component in the group?s diversification. It is worth mentioning in this regard that Bharti FieldFresh has announced plans to get a turnover of Rs 5 billion by 2010. Generally speaking, FieldFresh is a 50:50 partnership venture between Sunil Mittal?s Bharti Enterprises and Del Monte Pacific India Limited started its corporate journey in 2004. To get an edge over its rivals and global competition, the company has established the biggest agricultural R&D facility of its kind in more than 300 acres of land. According to sources, company also plans to engage farmers across India for contract farming. In my opinion, FieldFresh expecting 30 per cent of revenues from exports needs to also focus on the domestic market. In the domestic ...
