Reducing media bias through regulation ¦ Vox [del.icio.us]
2009-09-18 14:22:00
[W]e show how advertising can seriously interfere with the quality, accuracy, and breadth of content and programming in the media (Ellman and Germano 2009). Biased content is most likely when competition amongst media outlets is limited or when advertisers are large and can threaten to withdraw their advertising business from the media. The analysis extends to media dependence on any business or state actors that can substantially affect media company profits. Analysing the delicate interaction between advertisers, financiers, media outlets, and media audiences within a two-sided markets framework generates new insights for policymakers. Our work points to the need for independent media and makes the case for promoting competition and public funding.

ESPN: No Oakland Raiders Bias - NFL Draft Notes
2009-04-27 16:41:00
More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! My long-time friend Richard Lieberman is prone to hyberbole and god-love him, this is one of those moments.  The San Francisco Chronicle blogger may have made some hay by charging ESPN with a "bias" against the Oakland Raiders, but where I am in New York, and where I was at Radio City Music Hall for the NFL Draft, the notion was quickly put to rest.  I'm going to spend about as much time on this as ESPN did, but the bottom line is a lot of people didn't like the Raiders draft, almost from top-to-bottom. I was editing videos in the Interview Room when I overherd NFL Network's Pat Kirwan, and Clark Judge of CBS Sports doing a take for NFL Network, and both were almost laughably derisive of the Raiders decision to take Darrius Heywood-Bay, who's the third ranked receiver in the draft over Michael Crabtree who was picked in an almost regional slap-in-your-face move by the cross-bay San Francisco 49ers.  The pr...
Media Bias: The Poor Coverage of the Tea Party Protests
2009-04-16 19:13:00
The Main Stream Media is absolutely biased. One need to merely compare not only the Presidential coverage, but now the Tea Party coverage. Over 200,000 individuals protested the size of government and debt, in 600+ locations across 300 cities all over the nation, and it had barely any coverage. The New York Times ...

Cartguyforever wrote a new blog post: Bias? Get Outta Here! I’ll admit that I watch Fox News. I never did prior to President Obama taking office, though now I often find myself tuning in while eating breakfast to hear what Fox News has to say about current events and the like. This morning Fox News mentioned a new study that suggested American textbooks ...
Media Bias and Political Scandal
2009-02-05 18:42:00
If you have any doubts that the mainstream media favors the Democrats, just take a gander at the way most major news outlets cover political scandal. If a Republican is involved, they identify his political affiliation early in the report. If a Democrat, they bury that affiliation, if they list it at all. Google ...
A How-To Lesson For Left-Wing, Old Media Bias
2009-01-31 14:21:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Once in a while there is a short piece spewed forth by some Old Media outlet or another that is so perfect as a primer of left-wing bias 101 that I just have to share it. In this case we have the Telegraph writing on the story, covered at NewsBusters a ...

Former KDFW reporter sues station, alleges racial bias Rebecca Aguilar, a former KDFW/Channel 4 reporter, has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the Fox-owned station, asserting that her “documented history of complaining about the treatment of Hispanics and Latinos by her employer” led management to suspend and ultimately fire her. Time?s Halperin Scolds Press for ?Extreme Pro-Obama Bias?
2008-11-24 13:09:00
-By Warner Todd Huston The Politico reported on November 22 that Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin scolded the media for it’s sycophantic treatment of Barack Obama during this election cycle calling the favorable treatment “the most disgusting failure” of the press he’s seen for years. “It was extreme bias, extreme pro-Obama coverage,” Halperin said at a Politico/USC ...
A Classic Case of Leftist Bias From Reuters on Obama?s Coming Judges
2008-11-16 01:42:00
-By Warner Todd Huston We’ve seen some major cases of left leaning bias in the media, especially during the late presidential campaign. Many of these cases have been blatant and over-the-top in style but, while covering the brazen cases of such bias, it is easy to forget that there are every day cases of the more ...
Anti-McCain Media Bias: Biggest Irony of Campaign ?08?
2008-11-11 14:30:00
At the outset of the presidential campaign just concluded, before I came to support John McCain’s White House bid, I wrote that I was troubled by the Arizona Senator’s “tendency to posture on certain issues to please the media.”  They responded to such posturing by treating him well.  In return, he jokingly called them “my ...

Media Bias in this Election
2008-11-04 20:18:00
Not long ago, a critical reader observed that most of my posts that week had focused on media bias.  He was right.  I have written a lot about that in this campaign. In their election day roundup, Pajamas linked Roger Aronoff’s post finding “the mainstream media were overwhelmingly in the tank for Barack Obama, and did ...
Media Bias in Favor of Obama:They Want to Cover an Historic Election
2008-11-02 20:31:00
Study after study confirms what we in the “rightosphere” have long supposed (and what responsible journalists have reported): the media are biased in favor of Obama.  According to a recent report from the respected Center for Media and Public Affairs: Comments made by sources, voters, reporters and anchors that aired on ABC, CBS and NBC evening ...
On Tim Mahoney, Mark Foley and Media Bias
2008-10-15 00:41:00
Two years ago at this time, you could not open up a newspaper or turn on a TV newscast without learning about the follies of then-recently disgraced (& then-recently) former Congressman Mark Foley. That Florida Republican had been sending sexually explicit Instant Messages to male House pages. Now, we learn that Tim Mahoney, the Democrat ...
WaPo Editor Broder Says ?No Such Thing? As Media Bias
2008-09-26 17:23:00
-By Warner Todd Huston In a recent visit to Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, Washington Post political editor David Broder told students that he believes there is no such thing as media bias. More BBC bias
2008-09-19 16:15:00
Christian Istitute reports,'A successful Christian children?s author says he was refused appearances on the BBC because it couldn?t be ?seen to be promoting Jesus?.G P Taylor?s first novel, Shadowmancer, spent 15 weeks at the top of the British book charts in 2003. His second book, Wormwood, sold 22,000 copies in one day.Yet the author claims that invitations for appearances on the BBC stopped once producers found out he was a Christian. ?I had good relations with them until they realised that there were religious allegories in my stories,? he told The Sunday Telegraph. ?Once they had decided that I was promoting Christianity in my books I found the door firmly shut.? Mr Taylor said his faith meant that he was not welcome on children?s programmes like Blue Peter. He said: ?A BBC producer told me ?off the record? that it was a matter of my faith and the fact that I was an Anglican priest. ?We can?t be seen to be promoting Jesus?, he said with a laugh.?A spokesman for the BBC denied ...
Media Bias & GOP Convention Bounce
2008-09-08 19:10:00
As most polls shows John McCain edging into the lead over Barack Obama following the successful GOP Convention in St. Paul, John Hinderaker sums it up: Obama will have the edge when voters are learning about the campaign from newspapers, magazines or television, and McCain will have the advantage when voters actually see the candidates perform. ...

Yay, More Media Bias
2008-07-15 01:05:00
Looks like the MSM is starting to mirror blogtopia more and more.About the AP:Ron Fournier says he regards Sandy Johnson, his predecessor as head of The Associated Press?s Washington bureau, as ?a mentor.?Johnson, though, regards Fournier, who replaced her in a hard-feelings shake-up in May, as a threat to one of the most influential institutions in American journalism.?I loved the Washington bureau,? said Johnson, who left the AP after losing the prestigious position. ?I just hope he doesn?t destroy it.?There?s more to her vinegary remark than just the aftertaste of a sour parting. Fournier is a main engine in a high-stakes experiment at the 162-year old wire to move from its signature neutral and detached tone to an aggressive, plain-spoken style of writing that Fournier often describes as ?cutting through the clutter.?In the stories the new boss is encouraging, first-person writing and emotive language are okay.So is scrapping the stonefaced approach to journalism that accepts po...
More Silly Bias from CNN
2008-07-11 23:16:00
While watching CNN while doing cardio, I noted yet again obvious bias of that “news” network, with Wolf Blitzer dwelling forever on a story that even the network’s own Jeffrey Toobin, obsequious legal court jester to the media elite, dismissed. Based on one law professor who just happens to teach in McCain’s home state (a fact ...

Keith Olbermann's Bias Against The Military Is Showing
2008-05-24 05:57:00
So I'm on the eliptical machine at the gym and low and behold my favorite idiot comes onto the tv. Unfortunately, I don't have any control over the channel, so I just pop my ipod on and read the subtitles in case he says something stupid. While his condemnation of Hillary's "RFK assassination" comments were fairly accurate, I have noticed one thing; liberal politicians aren't on his "worst person in the world" commentary. He lambasts a General at Guantanamo Bay for basically saying that the inmates there aren't tortured and they basically live like they are in a frat house, and he's one of the "worst people in the world". Yet, Hillary gets much more of Keith's time and she's not the "worst person in the world" or even in the top 3.What's worse is that I've now noticed (maybe I'm a bit slow here), that military officials are constantly on this list, but liberal politicians aren't. That's not journalism Keith. That's showing favoritism. ...

Yet, in that speech, the president made no reference to Barack Obama nor to the Democratic Party, mentioning ...
