The Hindenburg Legend - Myths and Bias
2012-01-31 16:42:00
"Oh, the humanity!" said Herbert Morrison as he gave eyewitness radio coverage of the flaming German airship. Nothing regarding the Hindenburg disaster has burned more vividly into history, except for the perhaps the hydrogen itself. And although Morrison's chilling words had no real intention
New Yorker Cartoon Exposes Bias & Not Historical Realities
2011-12-24 15:32:00
It has been observed that often a picture is worth a thousand words.  By this, it is meant that often a witty image can more quickly convey an idea than a written exposition. Another truism nearly as classic insists that the only thing we learn from history is that we don’t learn anything from history. A prime ...

A Tale of Two Committees: Bipartisan Bias in New York and California
2011-06-10 16:22:00
From: Poli-Tea Last week, in a discussion of California’s newly-minted Citizens Redistricting Commission, I noted that even though the commission is multi-partisan in character – by law, it consists of five Democrats, five Republicans and five four individuals who are not affiliated with either of the major parties – reporters, commentators and even commissioners themselves have continually referred to it ...

Rep. Walsh Introduces H.R. 1501 to Stop U.N. Bias Against Israel
2011-04-14 17:06:00
From the office of Rep. Joe Walsh (R, 8th District)... Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Joe Walsh (IL-08) introduced H.R. 1501 to withhold U.S. contributions to the regularly assessed U.N. biennial budget until it officially retracts the Goldstone Report, a 2009 U.N. report that accused Israel of war crimes. This bill is a response to last week's Washington Post Op-Ed by the report's author, Dr. Richard Goldstone, in which he recanted the entire report. He wrote that the report's central accusation--that Israeli soldiers deliberately targeted Palestinian civilians during its invasion of Gaza--is false. Goldstone has now concluded that "If I had known then what I know now, the Goldstone report would have been a different document". "This is just another...

Home court bias and the Horizon League
2011-01-14 05:19:00
I just finished reading an article in Sports Illustrated about home field advantage that is actually an excerpt of Tobias Moskowitz and L. Jon Wertheim's new book Scorecasting. In it they discuss home court advantage and referees in particular. Well, then I looked at the box scores for tonight's Horizon League games and check out the doozy in the UIC vs. Milwaukee game. The Flames shot 22 fewer foul shots. The fascinating thing is that occurred the committed just five more fouls than Milwaukee. UIC shot 9-12 from the line and Milwaukee shot 23-34. That difference of 14 points from the line accounts for the entire 12-point margin in the 87-75 Panthers victory. In Green Bay though Loyola had nothing to complain...

The new DIVO technology automatically adjusts the bias of the output power tubes to ensure their full potential is realised. It monitors the amp?s performance and will isolate faulty tube failures, by running them at half power until the tubes can be changed. The DIVO system also increases the reliability of amplifiers by maintaining the optimum performance of the tubes by performing an ?in circuit? test every time the amplifier is powered up. No Bias Zone: 'Journalist' Calls Tea Parties 'Right-Wing Blo
2010-07-31 21:30:00
-By Warner Todd Huston One of my early blogging assignments was the media bias beat over at Newsbusters, so I became particularly attuned to picking up on how the Old Media toes that "unbiased" journalistic line. Unfortunately, in sometimes subtle ways their rhetoric is geared to smear Republicans in any way possible. Here is a perfect example. Last week in a a Chicago-based report on Illinois Republican Gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady, NBC Chicago's Edward McClelland described suburban tea party events as "right-wing bloodfeasts." 2010-06-25 16:02:00
Nope, no East coast bias here for ESPN. The Rangers win their 11th straight game and the White Sox win their 9th straight. But those stories get blips at ESPN. Meanwhile, the Red Sox take one game in the series from the Rockies and they get the top slot after the NBA Draft news. Ridiculous. Also, ridiculous? Rasheed Wallace's retirement -- not necessarily even news as it has already been reported after the Finals ended -- gets a spot above the Rangers and White Sox....
AP Bias: Name That Party Blasts Repubs, Leaves Dems Unnamed in Stories
2010-06-17 22:00:00
-By Warner Todd Huston One of the many ways that the Associated Press lends its support to Democrats and leftists in its political reporting is often evident in its stories on political scandals. The most common assist the AP gives to Democrats is to somehow forget to mention that a politician in the news because of criminal activity or other scandals is a Democrat. Yet when any pol in the news for scandal is a Republican his party affiliation often leads the story, if it isn't in the headline, even. Oh, it's all accidental I'm sure, but it happens so often as to give the suspicion of a concerted effort. And today we have a great example of the AP's...

Racial bias or not, transit funding formula must change
2010-01-07 13:00:00
By now you may have heard that two minority CTA riders filed a class-action lawsuit Wednesday alleging that racial bias favoring white transit riders over minorities has resulted in a transit funding formula that benefits Metra over the CTA.A Metra spokesperson said the agency "categorically denies any type of racial discrimination," and questions the validity of the ridership statistics cited in the lawsuit. The suit claims that 60 percent of CTA riders are Latino or black, while 70 percent of Metra riders are white. Now, I don't know whether those ridership figures are correct. But I do know I'm appy that maybe this lawsuit will force lawmakers to revisit the flawed funding formula. The CTA now receives 59 percent of...

Not that a slight tilt would make me leave Google, but I thought it'd be interesting to see how the company leans, politically. Their homepage cartoons are mostly innocuous middle-of-the-road fare, and some of the demands- a 9/11 pic, Christ on Christmas- go against its policy against religion and politics, I think. They did feature an image of that new monkey-like fossil, which some people take as anti-religious as evidenced by those Darwin car stickers (religion gives avowed atheists' lives meaning). Reducing media bias through regulation ¦ Vox [del.icio.us]
2009-09-18 14:22:00
[W]e show how advertising can seriously interfere with the quality, accuracy, and breadth of content and programming in the media (Ellman and Germano 2009). Biased content is most likely when competition amongst media outlets is limited or when advertisers are large and can threaten to withdraw their advertising business from the media. The analysis extends to media dependence on any business or state actors that can substantially affect media company profits. Analysing the delicate interaction between advertisers, financiers, media outlets, and media audiences within a two-sided markets framework generates new insights for policymakers. Our work points to the need for independent media and makes the case for promoting competition and public funding.

ESPN: No Oakland Raiders Bias - NFL Draft Notes
2009-04-27 16:41:00
More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! My long-time friend Richard Lieberman is prone to hyberbole and god-love him, this is one of those moments.  The San Francisco Chronicle blogger may have made some hay by charging ESPN with a "bias" against the Oakland Raiders, but where I am in New York, and where I was at Radio City Music Hall for the NFL Draft, the notion was quickly put to rest.  I'm going to spend about as much time on this as ESPN did, but the bottom line is a lot of people didn't like the Raiders draft, almost from top-to-bottom. I was editing videos in the Interview Room when I overherd NFL Network's Pat Kirwan, and Clark Judge of CBS Sports doing a take for NFL Network, and both were almost laughably derisive of the Raiders decision to take Darrius Heywood-Bay, who's the third ranked receiver in the draft over Michael Crabtree who was picked in an almost regional slap-in-your-face move by the cross-bay San Francisco 49ers.  The pr...
Media Bias: The Poor Coverage of the Tea Party Protests

A Classic Case of Leftist Bias From Reuters on Obama?s Coming Judges

Anti-McCain Media Bias: Biggest Irony of Campaign ?08?

At the outset of the presidential campaign just concluded, before I came to support John McCain’s White House bid, I wrote that I was troubled by the Arizona Senator’s “tendency to posture on certain issues to please the media.”  They responded to such posturing by treating him well.  In return, he jokingly called them “my ...

More Silly Bias from CNN
