Hodges on Hebrews (Part 4)
2008-05-29 17:12:00 I hope you are enjoying the insights from Zane Hodges on how to understand the book of Hebrews. It really is one of the more difficult books of the New Testament, especially with those five warning passages. Also, while I am not Zane, if you have questions about anything he says, go ahead and post them ...
Hodges on Hebrews
2008-05-20 08:01:00 Many years ago, I read somewhere (I think it was in Joseph Dillow’s book The Reign of the Servant Kings) about the revolutionary lectures by Zane Hodges on how to understand the book of Hebrews. Dillow’s book was printed in 1992, and so Zane’s lectures must have been given at least twenty years ago. When I read this, I wanted to find out ...

2008-04-23 15:50:00 I’ve been doing a lot of reading recently from all sides of the current “Emerging Church Movement” debate. It seems that those who oppose the Emerging/Emergent Church Movement have one primary concern/complaint. It is this: The emerging church is headed toward syncretism. As they embrace/engage the post-modern, post-Christendom, emerging generations, all in an effort to contextualize the Gospel for the culture, they actually ...
I Like Lance a Lot
2008-04-14 19:20:00 I had a good long talk with Lance again on Saturday, and he may be one of the most refreshing people I have ever met. I want to know more people like him. He is open, honest, and genuine. He says what he thinks, but in a way that is unoffensive. And wow, does he know ...
Zeitgeist the Movie
2008-04-11 08:14:00 Last week I told you of my encounter with Lance, the Devil-stick expert, and Merril, his Mayan-guru babysitter. I met both at the Scarborough Renaissance Faire and we talked some about Jesus and hope for the future. To understand where he was coming from, he told me to watch Zeitgeist the Movie. (Zeitgeist is German for “Time Spirit” ...

The Parable of the Talents Revisited
2008-03-14 19:51:00 In the past, I have preached, written, and taught that the Parable of the Talents was about using what God has given us so that we can multiply it for Him and therefore, get eternal reward from Him in heaven. I taught that we all need to be like the first servant, or at the ...

2008-02-08 03:49:00 I’m attending Northwood’s Glocal.net Turbo training conference today and tomorrow. I think Bob Roberts has one of the most profound and yet simple approaches to church planting that exists. Every pastor and church planter should read his books Glocalization and Transformation. Also, he has a new book out called The Multiplying Church, which I haven’t ...

2008-01-12 03:01:00 Athena the Lesbian has decided not to be a lesbian after all. And although she's still a Greek Lesbian, she is no longer a gay lesbian. At the Christmas party curiosity got the best of her and she decided to experiment with Jane from Softlines, leaving me and stiffy out in the cold. Apparently she enjoyed it quite a bit. So much so, she thought it had taken and she became a lesbian. But it didn't quite take the way she thought it had taken because she really started missing stiffy, something Jane from Softlines could not provide. So she's now back for more, which is good for me since I've fallen a little short after the whole Christmas party debacle. For example, Lucia has not been the same since she found God and started attending Mulhausen's weekly Bible study. She believes that committing adultery with a fellow member of the Bible study group is somehow more acceptable in the Lord's eyes than fucking an agnostic like myself. After all, they have the same beliefs, they're o...

Office Holiday Party Aftermath
2007-12-15 02:38:00 Well, looks like Tefft picked the right theme for year's office holiday party after all. The party couldn't have been more apocalyptic... Not for everyone. Just me.Sorry, the blog is a little long today, but a lot of shit went down last night... The party was held in one of the large ballrooms at the Red Lion Hotel with 6 tables of appetizers set up at one end, a stage with a DJ at the other end, and full bars positioned in each corner of the expansive hall. At 7:00 sharp, a cavalcade of young aspiring actors and actresses pretending to be servers came crashing through the double doors with your choice of a fish or chicken plate. The food was average, but nobody was here for the food. At my table sat Gladstone, Conklin, Petrizzo, McKinney, Kessler, and a few miscellaneous staffers. We were all having a conversation, but rarely did we look at each other. Our eyes were darting back and forth like pin-balls racking up points between two bumpers. Women looked depraved and immora...

Preach the Word?
2007-12-14 20:54:00 One of the things I love most about being a pastor is preaching the Word. For years, I have thought that a church can get by without music, without a building, without programs, without youth groups and children’s programs, but a church is not a church if it doesn’t preach the Word. But upon deeper reflection, ...
Cleavage in the Workplace
2007-12-12 00:06:00 Blair and Athena the Lesbian were both in a bad mood today. Blair, because she was stood up for Sushi the night before by my imaginary boss and Athena the Lesbian, because someone was offended by her cleavage and complained to HR. Blair would not tell me why she was in such a bad mood, although of course, I already knew. She looked absolutely stunning. More makeup than usual and more cleavage. This, I suppose, was done to make it very clear to Smithee that he had missed out on some good shit because of his rude cancellation. But when Blair stopped by Smithee's office, she did not find the nonexistent man, so she yelled at Teri because her new imaginary boss wasn't available. She left more pissed off than when she came. Last night must have been spectacular. After all, she waited an entire hour for a man who doesn't exist to show up for dinner. When she finally got his text message cancelling, she probably threw her phone at the waiter, screamed obscenities and stormed out of the ...

Why ask Why?
2007-12-11 21:50:00 Sometimes our church traditions can get in the way of doing what we?re supposed to be doing. For example, I am not convinced that it is wise for most churches to have buildings, meet on Sunday morning, and be ?non-profit.? Sure, there are times when these things make sense. But in many ways today, such practices are only ...
Church Planting with Will Smith - Part 2
2007-12-06 21:05:00 Yesterday I reminisced about Will Smith and his transformation from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Will Smith of Hollywood. In the December 10, 2007 issue of TIME magazine, there was a writeup about Will Smith and how this transformation occurred. What is Will’s secret? Intentionality. Will Smith says that this is all according to plan. TIME ...
Holiday Spirit
2007-12-04 23:45:00 I don't have any.But Tefft has enough for everyone. She started putting up wreaths and table top trees with lights and balls, lots and lots of red and blue balls. Her theme this year is the Apocalypse. I'm not sure she understands what the Apocalypse actually is, just that it has something to do with Christ. Even so, the Bible Study group is very pleased with her choice because it at least implies our celebration will be all about Christmas instead of this all inclusive "Happy Holidays" bullshit. It's not that they're intolerant of other beliefs, they just think everyone but Christians should be quiet about it. Gladstone and McKinney are again having two hour planning meetings each morning with Tefft, not only to plan decorations for our floor, but because Tefft is also on the Holiday Party Planning Committee this year and will need their help with that as well. As grueling as this effort is for my two peers, it will all be worth it in the end, given one of them will b...

Bible Study
2007-11-15 23:42:00 Christian Bible study occurs every Thursday at noon in conference room 2812. Mulhausen hosts the hour and promotes it as a non-denominational, non-business sponsored event. Although everyone is welcome, Jews, Mormons, and Catholics are not allowed. Nor are any of the pagan religions allowed, which include Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Members of the Christian Scientists and the Church of Christ can participate as long as they acknowledge the fact that they will be burning in hell for eternity in the hereafter unless they accept the real Christ as their Lord and Savior. And although this is a non-business sponsored event, if you do not participate, your performance rating will go down for not being a team player. If you are a member of one of the aforementioned religions that are not allowed to participate, your performance rating for team player will not go down, however, your overall performance rating will go down for being a member of one of the aforementioned religions. Shotgun Hermeneutics
2007-10-29 20:45:00 There is a tendency in many Christian circles to think that if a particular theological viewpoint can quote a lot of Scripture, it must be right. For example, in a recent book defending the Five Points of Calvinism (by David Steele and Curtis Thomas), the authors seem to think that if they just quote Scripture, ...
The Best Bible Study Software
2007-09-22 22:05:00 With the advances in computer technology we find that we can benefit in our Christian studies as well. Throughout the centuries men have had to spend much of their lives going through Scripture to study the word of God. We now find that even the layman has the ability to study God’s word with the development of special Bible based software. The advantage of this software is that now you can read, study, and compare different translations of the Scriptures in a relatively reduced amount of time. In this article I will present to you different Bible study programs which will be a great help to you in your study of the Scriptures. The absolute best software I have found would have to be Bible Works. The program is a culmination of practically any Bible study tool and resource you could possibly ever need. The program itself operates seamlessly and is very pleasing to work with. It has an intuitive interface so that as soon as you start the software, you are ready to jump r...

Bible Study - Contradictions in the Creation account.
2007-08-30 06:03:00 I did a study today - something I haven't done in awhile and it was great. I'm no great scholar and I'm not even that smart really, so if I said anything good or truthful, please know that it is not due to my own wisdom and understanding but the Lord's. I hope whomever reads this is blessed....I'd like to start by saying if you compared every story, parable, and teaching in the Bible with another one in the Bible, there will always be "differences" but they are not true differences. It is simply new or more information of the same event. (expansion)So to correctly understand an account, you must first determine that these are the same event and you do this by searching for what they have in common. More on that later...Creation account:Gen 1:26-27 And God said , Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepe...
