A New Way to Look at Public Transportation
2008-06-24 20:10:00 When we think of public transportation, images of crowded buses and cramped subways come to mind. And even though the public transit systems are better for the environment than everyone driving, they still produce emissions. However, a new design may change the way we look at transportation available to everyone. An All-Automatic CVT Based Bicycle
2008-06-04 06:38:00 Personally, I'm not much interested in wanting to have an all-auto bike. Maybe its nice to have one in my collection, if such a contraption ever exists, just for the kicks. But the very notion of riderless shifting is sort of repelling to me. But all people aren't like me, so its okay. Its nice to be sensitive to everyone when you're out to design something.A month or two back, I had written a post called "New Ideas for Cycling Products". It was mostly science fiction, which I admitted. It was fun though.Well it seems like I missed out on the All-Automatic Bicycle, a bike that thinks and shifts on its own without the rider's mechanical involvement at the handlebars. This daydreaming of mine is based on a post on Ari's blog, pointed out to readers by James' Bicycle Design. Ari calls it "The NuFixie challenge : Can you build a 'fixed effort' bicycle?"I want to take a small dab at this. Nothing is too technical or specific. I'm beating around the bush but I hope you see where i...

2008-05-29 20:56:00 I know, this is a blog about cars, but this is just too good. There’s a bunch of things that makes this great/terrifying. First off, it’s that they mounted the engine on a bicycle. Not a car, or a truck, or even a motorcycle, but something that looks like a re-done Schwinn. Next, that’s not your run of ...

Bicycle Jets — Top Speed in 7 Seconds
2008-05-22 19:44:00 Want to ride your bike, but need to get someplace quicker than pedal power can? Why not fire up your bike jet? Why ride at 10-15 MPH when you can cruise along on your bicycle at 75 MPH? Pure insanity — but it looks like a lot of fun. Video: Bob Maddox’s pulse jet bike Wired’s Chuck Squatriglia writes about jet biker Bob Maddox’s creations in a Wired.com report: The thought of bolting a jet engine to an old Schwinn cruiser came to him about six months ago when “I wanted to throw the engine onto something that would get me around.” The bike engines provide 50 pounds of thrust. They weigh 13 pounds apiece, but Maddox says you hardly notice it when you’re on the bike. Get it going, though, and things get interesting. “It accelerates pretty quickly,” he says. “It’ll hit top speed in about 7 seconds. But even at high speed, it feels very stable. You’re just being pushed along on a column of air.” While pulse ...

Cardboard Bicycle
2008-05-20 00:59:00 Talk about going green! Ryan Perkins of Pacific SouthWest Container made this cardboard single speed from a PDF CAD drawing done on Bike Forest Pro. Excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail, I must say.Now if you have to ride it, you'll have to go on one of Carmichael's diet program. Or you know what'll happen. It is also so lightweight that to effectively lock it in place, you'll need two 500 kilogram weights on each side of the fork as shown in the picture. One will not do since it'll mangle the fork on one side and then the bike will only go round and round. Okay, wait...they're made out of cardboard too. (Jeez, that poor bike is being raped by chains)Jk..See more pictures at the Bike Forest Blog.
How Bicycle Helmets Are Made
2008-05-19 21:39:00 In a previous post, we looked at how bicycle helmets protect the head. Now lets look at how they're produced. Surely any helmet design will look good on paper but effectively manufacturing it under cost and time constraints is entirely another thing. But I must admit I have something against the way that shell and foam are attached, as in taped (watch the video)! Of course, there are other ways to piece them together. Bell uses what they term 'co-molding'. That drop test also seems insufficient, keeping in mind the many scenarios in which a cyclist can crash. Video courtesy of user RameshKumar123.Now one wonders how popular cycling helmets out there are so expensive. Does R&D and testing take up the costs or are there more factors involved? And what is so state-of-the-art about the latest research on bicycling helmets? Isn't the same knowledge used pretty much year after year or is it otherwise? Marketing trendiness of "pro-helmets" with a thousand vents must also be near th...

Brooks Supports The Bicycle Film Festival
2008-05-15 23:49:00 "The Green Swallow is a Limited Edition of the Swallow Classic, normally sold only in the traditional Brooks colours (black, brown and honey). The 100 pieces are sold in cooperation with the Bicycle Film Festival in NY (May 28-June 1). For each sold saddle BROOKS will devolve 100 $ to support the Bicycle Film Festival. The Swallow reproduces the timeless design of the daddy of all modern racing saddles, first in production in 1937. This limited edition features the original chrome plated steel metalwork. The tensioning plate on the underside still bares the original patenting information retaining the word DEPOSÉ, as the patent for this model was first registered in Paris. Back then many of Brooks saddles in fact were exported to the continent for the use of racers in the tours."Read more here. If you're interested in seeing how Brooks saddles are made, check out a nice Flash based factory tour on their homepage menu. This will give you an idea of the manufacturing processes involved.

Bicycle with electric motor assist.
2008-04-29 10:39:00 It's not exactly cheap, but it could be a steal anyway. The Electric Motion Systems' E+ electrically assisted bicycle could prove to provide a major improvement in your health, the health of the planet and, of course, the health of your finances. After the initial investment you could improve your health by biking to work instead of driving, you would use much less gas, and subsequently spend less money. The E+'s electric motor is situated in the rear hub and the battery in the front. This could make the bike a little front heavy, but we'll reserve any opinions on its handling until we've had a chance to test drive it. Other things are more obviously smart, like the regenerative braking, which enables the battery to get charged each time the rider brakes, and the the handlebar-mounted LCD display which shows speed, distance traversed, battery level and whether or not cruise control is enabled. It is a hefty USD 3,495:-, but considering the price of gas lately...

Self-service bicycle rental system coming to Washington DC
2008-04-29 01:22:00 A new self-service bicycle rental service called SmartBike is launching in the nation's capital. Docking stations for the bicycles will be located at ten locations around Washington, DC. To use the bikes, people will have to buy a $40 annual membership. Subscribers will get an ID card that they pass in front of the reader on the docking stations. The station will then unlock one of the bikes so it can be used. The bikes can be returned to any of the docking stations. The bikes can be used for up to 48 hours at a time. If a bike is not returned in that time the subscriber will get billed $200 for the bike. How a Bicycle Cassette is Made
2008-04-28 01:28:00 The new SRAM "Powerdome" OG-1090 - from birth to finished productCourtesy : HuangHere's an excellent picture showing the life of a rear cassette (cluster) as it is starts out from a 10lb block of steel to something cyclists can recognize. The process is handled by a CNC machine for quick, precise and cost efficient machining.Producing this is a two-step process.1) A block of chromoly (chromium-molybdenum) steel is milled into a dome, with the cog teeth. Then its CNC-machined into the dome (3rd picture from left). SRAM states that one cassette requires a full hour of milling and machining before it's done.2) The steel gets a nickel finish to give it immense hardness (last picture). SRAM's testing indicates that it's 35% harder than titanium. They wear out at a slower rate, so you end up replacing your cassette less often. This steel 8-cog block then gets paired with two additional "floating" cogs to make 10 cogs total. [Competitive Cyclist]One of the most important performance as...

Robotic Bicycle Valet Parking (In 23 Seconds)
2008-04-25 06:27:00 I went to Amsterdam once and nearly got run over by a bicycle every 3 steps I took. Those crazy Dutch love their bikes but I thought it was strange and not very safe the way they parked them on the side of the canals. Anyone can steal the bike, push it into the canal or mess with it in numerous other ways. I guess they figure the punks are too high to leave the coffee shop and mess with a bike. I don?t know if they ride as much in Japan as they do in Amsterdam but they came up with a much better system for parking a bike.

Japanese Automated Bicycle Parking System
2008-04-22 19:48:00 Courtesy : Danny ChooThe Problem : Tokyo is an overcrowded city, with 15 million bicycles registered to Tokyo's 30 million residents. Land is expensive. Bicycles here are only the first link in the long commuting chain from home to work by rail. Bicycles also tend to be parked illegally because there is almost no railway owned bicycle parking. These bicycles are then raided and confiscated by officers, and a fine of almost 20 dollars or more is incurred to get it back. The density of bicycles parked on sidewalks or roadsides severely hinder road traffic and pedestrians. An Engineering Solution : The railways and subways realized they have a duty to provide parking for their customers using the bicycle as the first mode of access. Nishi-Kasai Station in Edogawa now boasts something thats easily the first of its kind - a huge multi-level bicycle parking tower that is fully automated. The system can store upto 9,400 bikes. There are similar facilities for cars and can be found in many...
