Why I Prefer Shareware and Freeware Over Big Business Software
2008-04-17 00:47:00
Bigger software companies have more resources to develop than the smaller companies. However they are more concerned with advertisements and gaining more of the market share to take back there investments of developing software. To make matters worse now many of the software companies have inflated there packages so much that they actually are causing many computers around the world to fail, run slow, and cause more problems then they solve. For every piece of over inflated software with the exception of the biggest problem software (Windows) I can show you a nearly equal if not better free or shareware software package. There are not many exceptions to that rule. I say that Windows does not have a better freeware version because Linux has not grown up enough yet. Although they are so close. Overall the recent practices of some of the larger corporation software companies in a way could be interpreted as criminal. You combine that with the poor support they most often offer and...

Big Business as Usual: New Diversity of Voices Policy for Canadian Media Di
2008-02-06 14:00:00
After weeks of hearings and over 2,000 submissions from Canadians and media companies, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has finally issued their new policy concerning Diversity of Voices in the Canadian broadcasting system. Industry representatives received the new policies warmly while activists and artists have been disappointed. In a recently released summary and analysis of the new policies, the Campaign for Democratic Media (CDM) raises a number of concerns: the new policies will not safeguard diversity of voices in local broadcast markets (diversity is measured on a national scale), and they do not require divestment on the part of Canadian media companies despite Canada having one of the most concentrated media systems in the Western world. "The absence of safeguards for local diversity in broadcasting," says CDM, "runs counter to the Commission?s own suggestion that any benefits related to increased consolidation should include imp...

Small Pets - Big Business
2007-12-12 15:55:00
The American Pet Products Manufacturers Assn.’s 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey shows that 6 million households in the U.S. share their homes with some 22.8 million small pets, a 25 percent increase since 2004. Mice, hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, ferrets, sugar gliders, hedgehogs and degus, are proving that even if a creature is tiny, doesn't mean it's not loved. And these pet owners are willing to spend money on their little buddies. The amount rabbit owners spent on toys, for example, quadrupled from $20 in 2004 to $83 in 2006. The dollars spent on nonsurgical veterinary care by guinea pig owners grew during that same time period from $28 to $58. The fact that the "pocket-pet" segment of the industry is growing is of no surprise. It goes to show that the explosion of the pet industry is across the board, and not just in certain areas. In additional, smaller pets can be a bit easier to house, since they require less space, and usually less resources.

Reality Bites ? The Big Business of Sports; the Baseball Offseason & Fan Ac
2007-10-05 04:38:00
While I am here watching the Yankees get thumped by the Indians, I often check out the other blogs out there in the universe, and one of the best out there is the Nats320 Blog done by a Washington Nationals season ticket holder who has unbridled passion for the team and attends virtually every game. This week, he added an impassioned entry to his blog about the ticket availability for the post-season, TV programming and how MLB caters to their supporters, VIP?s, lawyers and corporate partners. I agree with most of he says; however, the reality of sports today it is driven by almighty dollar, big business and not ?biting the hand that feeds you?. I work for a defense contractor, and one of the biggest companies in the world as an IT consultant/site director. A few years ago, I was able to attend plenty of Washington Wizards game as fan, sit in a corporate box, eat free food, have all the drinks and have team officials greet us, even though I am nobody. I have been able t...

Forbes Life Executive Woman, whose first issue shipped this month, is an attempt to broaden the media company's coverage of senior-level businesswomen and to attract more sales from advertisers hawking luxury items. The glossy quarterly contains profiles of female executives and aims to be a "concierge" with articles on fashion, travel, beauty and fitness.
