UConn Finishes Strong In 40-16 Win
2008-10-26 02:00:00
A key special teams mistake by the Cincinnati Bearcats late in the 3rd quarter opened the door for the UConn Huskies and they never looked back after that as the Huskies went on to beat the Bearcats 40-16 in front of a sold-out Rentschler Field. The win for the Huskies ended a 2-game losing streak ...

Paw Prints - Brown Takes Home Big East Honors
2008-09-15 20:19:00
Considering the fact that South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe had 338 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown, I figured that UConn Huskies running back Donald Brown didn’t have a chance of winning Big East honors this week. Donald Brown took home Big East Offensive Player of the Week honors. Well I was wrong as ...

Georgetown basketball falls in Big East title game
2008-03-16 21:21:00
Georgetown's run to the undisputed top of the Big East Conference came to a crashing halt Saturday night as the Hoyas were knocked off by Pittsburgh, 74-65. The Washington Times cited overconfidence and a lack of intensity on the part of Georgetown as keys to the defeat of the regular season champions as Pittsburgh outrebounded HGU, 41-29.The Hoyas will of course still make the NCAA tournament field as an at-large team, likely still with a strong #2 or #3 seed. The second chance should allow John Thompson III to bring his players back in line. Georgetown can't win NCAA games beyond the first round with the smoke and mirrors that seemed to be in play in some regular season conference games, only by displaying the effort that made the program credible in the first place.Relevant links: Washington Times, Washington Post

Georgetown - Pittsburgh in Big East basketball finale
2008-03-16 01:18:00
The Georgetown Hoyas hope to complete a surprisingly dominant run through the Big East men's basketball tournament field with a victory against the Pittsburgh Panthers. Georgetown pulverized both Villanova and West Virginia in successive days to make the title game, holding their opponents to an average 59 points per game. Roy Hibbert hit 25 points and 13 rebounds against the Mountaineers after being shut down by Villanova.Should top seeded GU repeat its success this time out, it would win the Big East's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and at least a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Of course, the Hoyas will qualify for the NCAAs anyway as an at-large team but a loss against Pittsburgh could hurt in the seeding. The Panthers are a surprise finalist, coming into tonight's action as a #7 seed. #2 seed Louisville lost against Pittsburgh last Thursday. While Georgetown and Pittsburgh are far apart in conference seeds, the Hoyas are not heavily favored in tonight's action with Pit...

West Virginia Knocks UConn Out of Big East Tournament
2008-03-13 23:00:00
For the 4th straight year, the UConn Huskies will be watching the Big East Tournament back in Storrs as the West Virginia Mountaineers upset them 78-72 in a foul-filled game in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies have lost in the first round the past three years and in the semifinals back in 2005. After barely blowing the whistle in the first half, the referees decided to call fouls all second half as both teams combined for 50 fouls in the game. Most of the foul calls weren’t necessarily fouls and that was even noted by the ESPN commentators. Those fouls definitely affected the way both teams played in the second half. A.J. Price led the Huskies (24-8) with 22 points and 6 assists. Jeff Adrien added 11 points and 6 rebounds while Stanley Robinson had 11. Hasheem Thabeet led the Huskies in rebounding with 7 boards and chipped in with 6 points and had 2 blocks. West Virginia (24-9) was led...
Georgetown faces tough draw in Big East basketball tourney
2008-03-13 16:27:00
The Georgetown Hoyas open up play in the Big East men's basketball tournament this early afternoon with the #1 seed but having to face a stunningly tough draw. First up, the #8 seed Villanova Wildcats who played GU to only a two point defeat during the regular season. Despite the poor conference seed, Villanova has a significant shot of making the NCAA tournament and dominated bubble team Syracuse yesterday afternoon.Should Georgetown win its quarterfinal matchup (no sure thing), it would then meet either Connecticut or West Virginia followed by a potential rematch against Louisville or yet another quality opponent in the championship game. The Hoyas would have at least an outside argument to make for a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament should they win out this weekend at Madison Square Garden. Start time today is 12 p.m. on ESPN television and WTEM/980 radio.

Big East Tournament – Seton Hall (17-14) vs. Marquette (22-8)
2008-03-13 06:38:00
College Basketball Betting Preview Wednesday, 9:15 pm Eastern – ESPN Global Opening Line/Odds: Marquette - 10.5 , Total 149.5 The Big East Tournament gets underway on Wednesday and the late game has #25 Marquette facing Seton Hall. The Warriors will definitely get an invite to the NCAA Tournament while Seton Hall would need to make a deep run in the Big East Tournament to have any kind of chance. Jerel McNeal leads Marquette, scoring 13.6 points per game. He scored 22 points in Marquette’s loss at Syracuse on Saturday. Marquette has given up an average of 77.3 in their last three games. "We've just got to have a different defensive attitude," head coach Tom Crean said. "The story of the game for us was we did not create enough points off our defense. That's how we play. We weren't physical enough, we weren't aggressive enough and they capitalized." SBG Global reports that early NCAA Basketball betting has the public taking Marquette at Home. Marquette is 1-2 in the Big East...
UConn Women Hold On To Win Big East Championship
2008-03-12 03:30:00
It was a tale of two halves for the UConn women’s basketball team. The first half saw them take a 15-point lead into the locker room while the second half saw them shoot poorly and have to survive a late Louisville run. But in the end, the Huskies prevailed as they beat the Cardinals 65-59 at the XL Center to win the Big East Women’s Tournament Championship. Charde Houston was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. And no, that is not a typo nor did I “mishear” it like Roger Clemens thinks Andy Pettitte did. She was the reason why the Huskies were able to withstand that late Louisville run as she showed the world how great of player she can be. She played great defense and did her damnedest to get her hands on any rebound she could as she added 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Renee Montgomery paced UConn (32-1) with 20 points including 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the last minute of the game. Big East Pl...

With the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team about to tip-off against the Louisville Cardinals in the championship game of the Big East Tournament, let’s take a look at some other news regarding the Huskies men’s basketball team. As we know, the Big East Conference announced their All-Big East Teams yesterday. Today they announced the major award winners at the banquet and UConn picked up one award as Hasheem Thabeet was named the 2007-2008 Big East Defensive Player of the Year. Thabeet was most deserving of the award as set the Big East single-season record of blocks with 94. Alonzo Mourning held the previous record at 93. Thabeet also led the league in blocks with 4.5 per game and 5.2 per game in Big East play. He also averaged 8 rebounds a game. Head coach Jim Calhoun was named the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) All-District 1 Coach. The USBWA (United States Basketball Writer’s Association) also named Calhoun as it’s Coach of th...
UConn Women Advance To Big East Finals In Romp
2008-03-11 02:00:00
The Pittsburgh Panthers proved to be no match for the UConn Huskies again as the Huskies put this game away early and rolled to a 74-47 win at the XL Center in Hartford, CT in the Big East Tournament semifinals. The Huskies will face the winner of the Louisville/West Virginia game in the finals tomorrow night. Tina Charles led the way for the Huskies (31-1) tonight with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Renee Montgomery added 15 points while Ketia Swanier added 10 points. Maya Moore, who was in foul trouble most of the game, saw her consecutive games in double figures end as she only scored 7 points and also pulled down 6 rebounds. Kaili McLaren chipped in with 4 points, 6 rebounds and led the Huskies with 4 assists. Pittsburgh (22-10) was led by Shavonte Zellous’ 11 points. Marcedes Walker contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds. Taneisha Williams added 6 points. UConn got off to a fast start tonight as they got out to an 11-1 lead.  The Huskies increased their lead to 20-10 before putt...

UConn Women Advance To Big East Semis Easily
2008-03-09 23:00:00
When I found out UConn was playing DePaul in the Big East quarterfinals, I really was expecting a similar type of game to last Saturday’s where the Blue Demons almost upset the Huskies. Boy was I mistaken as the #1 UConn Huskies rather easily took care of the 9th seeded DePaul Blue Demons 88-67 in front of 10,204 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. Renee Montgomery paced the Huskies (30-1) with 19 points and added 4 assists. Tina Charles had a great game with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Maya Moore struggled early on but finished strong as she had 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Charde Houston, with 14 points off the bench, was incredible today as well as her play pushed the Huskies through their slow start in the first half. Kalii McLaren led the Huskies with 5 assists. DePaul (20-12) was paced by Allie Quigley’s 17 points. Caprice Smith contributed 12 points while Natasha Williams added 10 points and 5 rebounds. It wasn’t pretty for both teams  early on in the...

2008 Big East Women?s Basketball Regular Season Awards Announced
2008-03-08 03:42:00
On Friday night in Hartford, CT, the Big East announced their regular season awards for basketball and I’d have to say that the UConn Huskies players did alright. Maya Moore continues to make history in the Big East and at UConn as she became the first player in the history of the conference, men or women, to take home the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Honors. She also was named to the All-Big East First Team and the All-Big East Freshman Team. UConn head coach Geno Auriemma shared the Coach of the Year honors with Quentin Hillsman, who did yeoman’s work at Syracuse. Ketia Swanier picked up a couple of honors as well as she was named the Big East Sixth Man of the Year and was named to Honorable Mention All-Big East Team. Not to be left out, a couple of other Huskies took home some honors at the banquet. Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles joined Moore on the All-Big East First Team while Lorin Dixon joined Moore on the All-Big East Freshman Team. Moore is the...
Providence Upsets UConn For The Second Time
2008-03-07 03:50:00
The Providence Friars needed a win against the UConn Huskies to help their chances to secure a berth in the Big East Tournament next week. Well they got that much needed victory as they outplayed the Huskies and beat them 85-76 at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI on Thursday night. The Huskies have already clinched a first round bye and will be seeded 4th. Weyinmi Efejuku paced the Friars (15-14, 6-11 Big East) with 25 points. Paw Prints - Moore Sweeps Weekly Big East Honors
2008-03-04 23:00:00
How good is Maya Moore you ask? Pretty damn good if you asked me. If you asked me to describe her, one word would come to mind. SPECIAL! Today the Big East Conference named her the Big East Women’s Freshman and Player of the Week for the week ending 3/3. She is the first freshman in the history of the Big East, men’s or women’s, to win both honors in the same week. She is only the second UConn women’s player to win the Player of the Week honors all season and it was her record 10th Freshman of the Week honors. Moore will most likely win the Big East Freshman of the Year honors and could also win the national honors as well. She will also be considered for the Big East Player of the Year honors and also that national honor as well. In the Huskies win over then #6 LSU last Monday and in front of national television audience, Moore scored 29 points, had 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. In the comeback win over DePaul this past Saturday, Moore had 16 points and...

Maya Moore, who broke Svetlana Abrosimova’s freshman single-season scoring mark, added 19 points and 7 rebounds. Tina Charles was a monster on the glass tonight as she pulled down 17 rebounds while chipping in with 15 points. Moore was fouled hard by Rutgers’ Epiphanny Prince late in the game on a fast-break layup and had to leave the game. The official word from the bench was she fell on her ass. The good thing for Moore is that she will have until Sunday t...

Paw Prints - Moore Wins 6th Big East Rookie Award
