Connecticut's 97-71 victory over the Blue Demons was a classic case of talent taking a sledgehammer to desire. The Blue Demons were doomed from the beginning. Having lost to the Huskies by 20 points earlier this season when Cleveland Melvin was healthy, the lack of his interior presence was going to be a big factor. It was, as Tony Freeland and Krys Faber started in the front court and were severely overmatched. They combined to go 3-16 from the field, commit seven turnovers, eight fouls and score 12 points....
Notre Dame's Ben Hansbrough will Likely be Big East Player of the Year
2011-03-08 04:39:00
If SIU is "Floor burn U," than Notre Dame senior guard would be "Captain Floor Burn." He's even grindier than his brother Tyler in his playing style and tries about as hard as anyone in college basketball. Hansbrough didn't make any preseason Big East all-conference teams, but Sunday he was the only player to be a consensus all-first team pick. Meaning he's probably the favorite to win the conference player of the year award. Hansbrough has led ND to double-bye in the conference tournament and a second place finish in the regular season behind Pittsburgh with his ability to both run the point and play off the ball. He's a finely conditioned athlete who works on his quickness everyday...
Postseason Preview: Big East 1st Rd.
2011-03-08 02:22:00
DePaul takes on #19 Connecticut in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The game is on ESPN2 at 11 p.m. CT and is the first of a four-game set on the ESPN Family of Networks. Unfortunately the Blue Demons are in a tough spot without Cleveland Melvin, but hopefully players like Brandon Young and Moses Morgan can get some postseason experience. If DePaul somehow manages to win this game the Blue Demons will take on Georgetown in the second round. That all leads to a date with top-seeded Pittsburgh, a Final Four favorite. Yup, the Big East is pretty good.Speaking of the Big East, Pico Dulce over at Rumble in the Garden managed to get 19...
DePaul's Melvin deserves to be Big East Rookie of the Year
2011-03-06 21:37:00
At this point it's pretty obvious that Cleveland Melvin has had an excellent freshman season for DePaul. Since he got injured the Blue Demons haven't been the same team. Well today the All-Big East teams were announced and Melvin was the lone unanimous vote getter for the Big East All-Rookie Team. We won't know if that translates to a Big East Rookie of the Year Award until Tuesday, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Melvin's going to win.I compared the 13 Big East freshman that played at least 340 minutes in conference play this season (sorry Moses Morgan!) and came to the conclusion that Melvin dominated his peers. For the comparison I looked at Usage Percentage, Points Per 40...
Huzzah and Hallelujah! DePaul Wins a Big East Road Game
2011-02-18 07:32:00
The reign of terror is over! 25 game conference losing streak no more! The DePaul Blue Demons have actually won a Big East game. And a road game for the first time in 31 tries. What a joyous night this is for Chicago college basketball. The world was a very different place in 2008, the last time the Demons won on the road- Jerry Wainwright was coach, cell phone calls not text messaging was the dominant form of communication, a lot of people, but not everybody had a Twitter account, a ton of people were on Facebook, but not every single person, and some people still had telephone land lines. But today is historical, as the Demons beat Providence...
DePaul tops Providence to end Big East losing streak
2011-02-18 06:01:00
It's over. DePaul doesn't have to worry about the stigma of losing every Big East game. The Blue Demons went to Providence on Thursday night on ESPN2 and beat the Friars, 79-76. Unfortunately I didn't see the game as I was at Chicago State, but I did listen to Zach Zaidman's call of the final 10 minutes on WSCR 670 on the ride home.It was quite the way to experience the game as Providence whittled the 13-point lead back down before the Blue Demons held on late. Player after player hit big shots for the Blue Demons down the stretch. After three narrow conference losses, DePaul finally made the plays down the stretch to get the win. Cleveland Melvin, Jimmy...
DePaul will prove it belongs in Big East moving forward
2011-02-17 18:50:00
Tonight's game between DePaul and Providence is big for a number of reasons. There's a lot of history in this game even though these two teams have only played 28 times. For one, the Blue Demons are continuing their quest to try and avoid a dubious fate - losing every regular season Big East game. It's happened before and it might happen again. And there will be a historic announcing crew to call tonight's game at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2 as well. Beth Mowins and Doris Burke will be the first all female women's hoops announcer booth at a men's college game on an ESPN network in more than a decade.Once again the Blue Demons aren't getting much of a...
Allstate Arena Among 5 Most Horribly Corporate Big East Venue Names
2011-02-12 00:16:00
The Big East may be the best conference in all of college basketball, but wow do they have some TERRIBLE  names among their collection of home venues. The super-conference is comprised of 16 teams, and many of them play in arenas with names so blandly and offensively corporate, they make the names of many of the college football bowl games sound romantic and wholesome. 1. KFC Yum! Center (Louisville) photo credit Flickr An arena name with an EXCLAMATION POINT! It's like that infamous Seinfeld episode:...
DePaul Falls Just Short of 1st Big East Win; Scare Cincinnati Bearcats
2011-02-09 03:12:00
Given the numerous factors in the Blue Demons' favor: 1.) How tough DePaul looked at #15 Louisville on Saturday, losing by just two baskets 2.) How bad Cincinnati looked at Pittsburgh the very same day 3.) All the internal college basketball drama the Bearcats have going on with star forward Yancy Gates, who was suspended in that Pitt game. 4.) The law of averages favor DePaul winning a conference game very soon it was reasonable to expect All State Arena's home team to triumph over Cincy Tuesday night. But alas, it was not to be....
#8 Notre Dame Beats DePaul; Making them Chicago's Best Big East Team
2011-02-04 03:31:00
It's been ten days since Notre Dame last played a college basketball game. And it was big; the biggest one in Mike Brey's career. The Fighting Irish defeated then #2 Pittsburgh at their place, then assuming second place (tied with Louisville) in the toughest conference in the nation. Aside from a couple missed dunks here, and a blown chippy there, they did not look rusty at all in their visit to All State Arena. Let down at DePaul? Not possible for ND, as they pulled away from the Blue Demons well before halftime. DePaul trailed just 24-20 at the 7:31 mark but found themselves down 37-24 at intermission. The second half was all ND as the Irish increased their...
DePaul's Cleveland Melvin Becoming one of Big East's Best Freshme
2011-01-18 00:32:00
For the third time in four weeks, DePaul freshman forward Cleveland Melvin was named Rookie of the Week by the BIG EAST Conference. Melvin is the first Blue Demons to pick up the honor three times in a season. Melvin averaged an impressive 23.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in games against Seton Hall and Connecticut last week. He opened the week with 21 points, nine rebounds and two assists against the Pirates before registering his first career double-double with 25 points and a career-high 12 rebounds against the Huskies. In addition to becoming the first DePaul player to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors, Melvin is also the only Blue Demon to pick up the award in...

All-Big East Non-Conference Teams
2010-12-26 16:00:00
With the non-conference season winding down, and Big East play set to start up Monday when Connecticut takes on Pittsburgh, I wanted to put out my all-conference teams through the first half of the season. The two five-man teams are completely based on non-conference play and use a combination of tempo-free statistics, regular statistics and general observations. The "Honorable Mention" list at the end is more an "Others Considered" list and generally highlights players that did well during non-conference play and didn't make the cut for either team.Note: I already published my All-Chicago teams and will be publishing Horizon League and Big Ten ones shortly. All the action is after the jump....
Sio Moore Named Big East Defensive Player of the Week
2010-09-27 18:29:00
The weekly honors for the Big East are out and we find a member of the UConn Huskies football team named as one of the players of the week. Huskies linebacker Sio Moore was honored as the Big East Defensive Player of the Week for his performance on Saturday. Moore, who took over as a starter for Greg Lloyd, had a career-high 16 tackles and an interception in UConn's 45-21 win over the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. It was also the first career start for Moore. Robbie Frey was also honored by the Big East as he was named to the Weekly Honor Roll. Frey came off the bench after the injury to Meme Wylie and ran for 112 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. With that effort, he has supplanted D.J. Shoemate as the No. 2 back and he'll also be the top back until Jordan Todman returns from his injury. The Huskies are back in action on Saturday at noon when the Vanderbilt Commodores come to Rentschler Field. It is homecoming weekend for the Hu...

My take on DePaul in the Big East Roundtable
2010-05-25 19:52:00
The St. John's blog East Coast Bias is a running a roundtable of Big East Bloggers this summer and early fall. 13 Big East basketball bloggers have agreed to participate and I think there is going to be some great information shared that will help keep everyone up to date on the other teams in the conference. The first set of questions is a look back at the season that was, which you can find the beginning of here. After the jump is my answer to the question about DePaul. Also, be sure to check out the post because Blue Demons Nation is also participating and I'm sure they'lll have a slightly different take on things....
DePaul beats Marquette, ends 24-game Big East losing streak
2010-01-21 05:28:00
Mike Stovall's incredibly clutch shots carried DePaul to a 51-50 victory over Marquette. It was the Blue Demons' first regular season victory over a Big East opponent in 25 games.
Change at DePaul doesn't change result in Big East
2010-01-15 05:46:00
While the head coach at DePaul has changed the result didn't as DePaul fell 79-62 to Providence on Thursday at Allstate Arena in Tracy Webster's coaching debut.
