Book Review: ?Hawai?i: The Big Island?
2009-02-22 00:25:00
You may have heard that the Left Coast Crime Convention next month is in Hawaii. Going is out of the question for me, as much as I would like to do so, unless the Texas Lottery folks manage to select my numbers very soon. They have resisted all my efforts for years so I don’t ...

Island Fever??? Living in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii....
2008-04-28 07:04:00
I'm soliciting questions, and blog reader Mel asked this question... "Do you ever get "island fever" living on the Big Island?"For me it really didn't hit for several years, but I'm starting to notice it more now, my wife said it really didn't hit her for 4-5 years. If you live here, you're fairly busy with everyday life... working, cleaning, cutting down the fast growing green stuff if you have property - all the usual things you deal with everywhere else.... you can go quite a while without noticing any feeling of being cooped up. The one thing where it's completely different from life back on the mainland is that if you really want or need a break from the routine, getting in your car and driving to a location that is totally different is more or less impossible. The circle island tour is fun, to a point, then it gets the same. You can't get in a car and in a day or two or five be a world away. I think it took Pat and I three days to drive to Texarkana, Texas from Corvallis...

To use the site list, you will need to know your representative district. Enter your street name to see your district. ...

Big Island Has Most Live Coral Of Main Hawaiian Islands
2008-02-11 11:45:00
New coral reef maps released by NOAA reveal that the Big Island of Hawaii has the highest percentage of live coral of the main Hawaiian islands। The finding supports studies indicating that geologically young islands such as the Big Island generally have more live coral cover than older islands.“Live coral covers 57 percent, or 29 square miles, of the waters surrounding the Big Island of Hawaii,” said Timothy A. Battista, an oceanographer with NOAA’s Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment. “That is the most live coral coverage of any of the main Hawaiian islands.”The maps are the result of the most comprehensive assessment of the extent and types of shallow-water seafloor habitats in Hawaii to date. In all, the NOAA mapping effort covered 506 square miles of ocean habitat on Hawaii, Kahoolawe, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Niihau and Kaula. The Hawaii survey was part of a larger effort by NOAA and partners to map all U.S. shallow water coral reef ecosystems an...

I don’t think I’ve ever registered as a Democrat before (no, never as a Republican either), but I’m going to this time. Sure, I don’t agree with either side’s policies on many occasion -less government seems like a better idea- but on the other had, I suppose I’m more “liberal” than not on many issues. ...

Hawaii Airfare War On Again (til tomorrow)
2008-01-30 02:40:00
The airlines in Hawai’i must hate having to raise and lower their fares whenever their competition does - and Mesa (Go Airlines!) is usually the one in control. Though it was only a month ago that they raised their inter-island flights to $49 (with Hawaiian and Aloha Air happily following suit) - today it’s back ...
NOAA survey says Big Island has most live coral...
2008-01-23 22:46:00
Here's a link to an online version of a news article I saw last week.... on their recent coral survey of the Hawaiian Islands. It basically says the Big Island has live coral covering 57% of it's shallow coastline. The print article I saw also mentioned the bulk of that was on the west side (Kona,Kohala) and the other islands average somewhere in the mid 20s percentage-wise in coverage. If any of you are interested in some of the specifics of the survey, you can click on this link to get to an interactive map of the islands and check out maps of coral structure around the islands. The picture above is of a day octopus I took at Pawai Bay the other week. I couldn't quite get the focus on him I wanted, he wasn't interested in sticking around and posing. A little personal health update- Saw the doctor yesterday and he's thinking tears at the top of the hamstring and down behind the knee, but nothing that won't heal over the next little while - that's good news as surgery is re...

Puna had seemingly been loosing the battle in terms of infrastructure and development needed to keep up with the population explosion of the past few years. Sharks, Swells and Stinky Smells

It’s kinda a thing with surfers, to recite our homogeneous oceanic factoids and universal truths, though on occasion we’re not necessarily precisely sure what we’re talking about. This seems to be the case in regards to sharks, and particularly their olfactory sensibilities and its effect upon their desire to attack. How many times have we heard ...

Blue Hawaiians - Christmas on Big Island [320k]
2007-12-04 15:16:00
phil dirt said: A Blue Hawaiian Yule is a mix of surf guitar, surf riffs, reverb, Hawaiian guitar, Don Ho-isms, dinner at Martin Denny's, and a nap in a little grass shack populated with hula dancers. It contains both vocals & instros, recorded with the laid-back precise stylings the Blue Hawaiians always supplies. This is a necessary addition to your holiday CD stash. The sound is clean and crisp.one of my real favourite albums for christmas. other than phil my rating would be *****! excellent played, beautiful engineered and re-ripped in beautiful 320k.1. Captain Cook recorded it’s use in Tahiti (Nono) in the 1700s, and later documents show its use in Fiji (Kura), ...

Hawai'i : Big Island
2007-05-23 00:00:00
Overview Although development has run wild on the Big Island as of late, it manages to maintain an Old Hawai'i feel, with tourism concentrated on its sunny northwest coast. From its active volcano seeping lava into the ocean to its white-sand beaches and its verdant green valleys, waterfalls, and rainbows, the Big Island delivers everything the postcards promise and then some. Sea turtles and manta rays make their homes here, and Mark Twain wrote some of his best prose in the moonlike southern region. Long after his death, artists, travelers, and locals continue to seek inspiration from the cliffs, lava, hidden valleys, ancient wisdom, and tranquil waters of Hawai'i. The Big Island is indeed big, and the largest of the Islands by far at 4,038 square miles. Even with recent development, the Big Island's population remains low (163,000), and only 2% of the island's 2.57 million acres is classified as urban. Honaunau Bay - The Big Island
2007-04-22 17:42:00
Here, the pristine white sandy beach and blue waters paradise is not the only attraction to visitors; it is also the underwater utopia. Scuba divers from all around the world are lured here to this Place of Refuge created when lava from the Kilauea volcano hardened into large formations in the ocean, now home to a spectacular coral reef. You will see here a large number of native tropical fish, of which about 40% can be found only in this bay area.Honaunau Bay is one of a series of tranquil, turquoise bays tucked into the Big Island's South Kona coast, a region that is quickly becoming a must-visit Hawaiian destination. Honaunau's crescent-shaped beach, soft white sands and windswept palm trees have lured photographers for years, giving Honaunau distinction as Hawaii's most photographed beach. This spectacular stretch of sand was once home to a ruling chief's palace, and today tourists and locals alike descend upon the beach in part for its pristine and peaceful setting, and to t...
Punalu'u Beach Park - Big Island
2007-04-22 17:37:00
Also known as Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, this is one of the most picturesque beaches on the Big Island. With the unusual black color of the sand and coconut trees swaying in the breeze, it is an excellent place for rest and relaxation. Home to the green sea turtles, whether you are relaxing, swimming, or snorkeling, you will most likely see them basking in the sun, eating green algae off of the lava rocks, swimming along and coming up for air, or see them sleeping at the bottom of the ocean.Punalu'u Beach Park is the most famous black sand beach on the island. This is a perfect place to enjoy the scenery, explore the black sand beach, watch the sea turtles, and swim or snorkel. You can also spread out a blanket under a towering coconut tree for a midday picnic or afternoon siesta, or sit for hours watching the action in the park's beautiful freshwater fish pond. The white tips of cresting waves against the deep blue Pacific are beautiful, but it's the astonishing black sand beac...
Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area - Big Island
2007-04-22 17:31:00
On Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway (Highway 19), 2.3 miles south of Kawaihae.Landscaped beach park with swimming during clam seas, bodysurfing during periods of shore breaks, sunbathing and other beach-related activities, picnicking and shelter lodging opportunities. Dangerous rip currents and pounding shore breaks during periods of high surf! Waves over 3 feet high are for experts--all other should stay out of the water and away from the shoreline! This is a nice quiet beach with clear blue waters and a sparkling white sandy bottom. Surrounded by palm trees, there is plenty of shade for you to relax under and enjoy the magnificent view of the ocean and beautiful rocky cliffs. During the summer the beach, which is half a mile long, can be 200 feet wide. If you like surfing, this is also an excellent place to enjoy it. Other activities here would be swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, and camping.
