Of course there were other important threads, but the most important was Barb's resolution of her status in the family - to Bill, Nikki, and Marge.As I noted in reviews of previous episodes, I think Barb has been struggling to find herself and her truest feelings about her polygamous marriage all this year. A large part of this process has been dealing with what the public knows of her family. Big Love is ending tonight on HBO (great season!). Mad Men is superb on AMC, as is Californication on Showtime. I'm also enjoying the new season of Weeds over there - but I'm really looking forward to Dexter's return to Showtime in September.This was the best show on television last Fall, in its first season. With just one more episode of this season's Big Love left on HBO, last night's episode really put the Henrickson family to the test.Barb's mother and her marriage was the match that lit this crisis. Barb's mother (brilliantly played by Ellen Burstyn - all the acting in this episode was really outstanding) is vehemently against her daughter's polygamy, and has tried to cut her daughter out of her life. Barb can't abide the separation, and goes to see her mother...What comes out of this visit is a plan for Ben to live with his grandmother (Barb has been less than pleased that Ben is beginning to see the "principle), and this a plan that neither Bill nor Ben are told about. Nikki likes it - she has no problem taking money from sinners. And Margene once again swings with the swing vote.At first she's in favor - if that's what Bill wants, she it wants it, too. A powerhouse of an episode of Big Love on HBO tonight, that shook the series to its polygamous roots. And it did this with some of the hottest scenes so far, and a shocker course-changing ending.It began with the seemingly innocuous: Bill falls asleep and misses his night with Nikki. She's of course unhappy, and Bill concludes from this that maybe one night a week off - from sex with his wives - would be a good thing for him and the family. The reason, presumably, is stress at business. But nothing is innocuous in this intensely loving tinder house of a family.Nikki assumes the reason is her. Margene's ok with it, at first - reasonably pointing out that the wives have plenty of nights off, so why shouldn't. Margene continues to the shining star of this year's Big Love, and last night didn't disappoint. Margene's mother, a real piece of work played by Bonnie Bedelia, pays an unexpected visit.There was something especially hilarious and satirical about this - how many times have moms made unexpected visits in sit-coms, soap operas, and what have you since the 1950s. It was nice to see Big Love's unique take on this, since, of course, Margene's mom doesn't know about the polygamy.Nikki played an especially interesting role in this. Margene, as we saw last week, knows about this. But far from being jealous, she's happy, even thrilled, that Bill might be thinking about a fourth wife. She's almost starting to fall in love with the waitress, too, as a sister-wife. A fine, complex episode of Big Love last night, with lots of important things going on.1. I think my favorite was Bill's flirting with the waitress in the diner. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time we've seen Bill go down this road with another woman - and it raises a bunch of juicy questions-a. Why is Bill doing this? Is he getting not enough love at home - is the ratio between emotional support and aggravation tipping towards too much aggravation? Or would he be doing this anyway, regardless of how good or bad things were at home(s)?b. Margene sees this from a car outside the diner. A tight, really powerful episode of HBO's Big Love last night, centering on Rhonda, and her escape from Roman's compound to the Hendrickson homes.That one action galvanizes just about every major character on the show, and brings out their truest colors. Barb wants to help Rhonda, and give her the safety and love of the Hendrickson family. Bill doesn't disagree, but is also not above using Rhonda as a bargaining chip in his dangerous dealings with Roman. Marge supports Barb. Nicolette does not - she sees Rhonda more clearly for what she is....Which is hard to say - but she's certainly plenty conniving. Roman, of course, is livid at the thought that the Hendricksons had anything to do with Rhonda's escape - and cannot abide their giving her shelter - and sends the police to Bill's homes. I wrote a piece "On the Benefits of Watching Television" way back in 1980, well before I even had a computer. In those days, I needed to defend TV against claims that watching it made us stupid, or worse. I pointed out that we all needed a little down time, when we weren't intellectually or emotionally engaged at our highest level, and TV provided this. And, even back then, some of it - such as Star Trek - was indeed a feast for the mind.As recently as last year, I published an op-ed about Television's New Golden Age in Newsday, arguing against the same near-sighted, mostly academic, attacks on TV.But lately I've noticed a different kind of criticism of television, with just the opposite grievance: television may be too sophisticated nowadays, too complex in some of its storylines for its own good - in other words, too good! Another excellent episode of Big Love on HBO last night.As usual, there were taut tensions and dangers around every corner in Bill's dealings with Roman, but the best part of the episode featured Bill's son Ben, and his relationship with Bill's youngest wife, Margene.Indeed, the best part of Big Love has always been the way it explores the playing out of all too human issues in the context of a sincere polygamous family.In this case, nothing romantic or flirtatous is even happening with Margene and Ben. Margene is the furthest thing from a frustrated wife, looking for a fling. She loves every aspect of her marriage to Bill (and Nicolete and Barb). And Ben's doing just fine, sexually, with a hot girlfriend.Now, Barb knows all of this as well as we, the viewers, do. But she can't help being concerned with the physical proximity of Margene and Ben - including Margene measuring Ben's waist for a pair of pants. It was good to hear "Oh, Happy Day" on tonight's Big Love, first sang by Rhonda in a recording session, and then over the closing credits. I've really enjoyed the harmony ever since I first heard the Edward Hawkins' Singers hit recording of the song decades ago.But, unsurprisingly, not everything was happy and harmonious for the Hendricksons on tonight's episode.Everyone forgetting Nikki's anniversary was billed as the main theme of the show - but that was by far the least of the problems that beset Bill and his family.Someone defaced one of his Home Plus signs, and he was plenty upset about that, but even that wasn't the main hit he took, tonight. I waited for Big Love to come back with more anticipation than I had for the last three years for the Sopranos. I wasn't disappointed.Last season, I think I was actually starting to like Nicki. Well, maybe like is a strong word, but I was beginning to be happy that she was in the family. She's strong and decisive and tough when they need someone like that. HBO's Big Love resumes June 11 with its second season. I'm looking forward to it - I thought Big Love, along with Showtime's Brotherhood and Dexter, were the best new series of 2006.With all of my focus on The Sopranos, which ends this Sunday, I realized that I enjoy Big Love for the same reason: both are stories of families which, in the cold light of day, operate well beyond the pale of morality. But in the superbly acted and produced light of cable television, I come to believe in both of them.Big Love is of course not about a mobster and his family. In many ways, Big Love asks even more of our preconceptions about family - it is about a man with three wives - a polygamist.And, amazingly, Big Love almost makes this seem as American as apple pie.
