Ghost bikes: litter and blight
2011-07-18 12:08:00 Someone is complaining about the ghost bikes. A person of courage instead of a sensitive coward. Those bikes are nothing more than litter and blight. Only a buron- bureaucratic moron- could come up with this reasoning: “Steele, spokesman for Chicago’s Department of Transportation, said the city doesn’t move ghost bikes because officials don’t consider them...

14 Cool Concept Bikes
2011-01-10 03:40:00 14 Cool Concept Bikes The future in bikes may already be here, at least on paper. We’ve found the most interesting Modern Concept Bikes the world has to offer. 0diggsdigg CYKEL Electric and Pedal Bike by Brian Mcallister As much fun as it is to bike around your city, West Coasters know just how hard it can be to pedal up steep hills and winding corners. The Cykel concept bike offers a modern solution meant to save you from getting exhausted. When the strain becomes too much, simply switch to electric power to assist you through the tough spots. Another clever feature of this prototype is solid over-mold tires to remove any worry over getting flat tires. 24/7 City Pedelec by Philipp Guenther Why replace your thin framed bicycle with wires and spokes every couple of years when you can just replace it all together with something different that will last. You’ll barely recognize the 24/7 City Pedelec as a bicycle with its solid frame and snazzy new tech from the cent...
Donate Your Bikes Today, Help a Great Cause!
2010-11-02 16:32:00 Growing up on the North Shore, most of my Bar Mitzvah memories are of slamming Mogen David with my BFF's Leon Zeidler and Scott Stern, then trying to line up the Champagne Dance, so I would be locking lips with Tina Miller(big 7th grade crush).Luckily in today's world, there are kids who have a much better world view of this coming of age tradition and are doing something to give back to the community. As you head out to vote, look around your garage, if you are like a lot of us, you have a spare bike that has been out grown by a child and is taking up space and gathering dust. Four Highland Park boys have the perfect place...
Bus meets bikes on Critical Mass ride; bus wins
2010-08-06 14:00:00 This account of the Critical Mass bike ride comes from a Tattler reader:I was a part of the entire Critical Mass ride last Friday afternoon. Although I don't agree with everyone's attitude towards sharing the road (or lack of) I thought overall it was an enjoyable ride. I'm one of those bikers that really tries my best to look out for everyone. There was one moment however for me that crossed the line. Unfortunately it involved a CTA bus. On Division street going eastbound just east of Noble ave at roughly around 8:15pm a #70 driver crossed the line in the safety of others. I can understand completely that this driver does not want to fall behind schedule, nor delay...
Childrens Bikes
2010-07-18 15:12:00 Childrens BikesBG Stores have a range of bikes for kids of all ages - from Disney Bikes to BMX Bikes for kids just finding their feet through to light weight children's mountain bikes and road bikes that the pro's would be proud of. Introduce your kids to an active and healthy lifestyle today!Children's bikes are sized by the wheel size, not frame height, and are designed to accommodate a large range of sizes. As a rough guide 12" bikes are for 2-5 years, 16" are for 4-8 years and 20" are for 7-10 years. Young children often find hand brakes difficult to use, and are better at stopping with their feet, so set the saddle to a comfortable height to allow them to put both feet down.
GameSmith Bikes and Chats With BMX's Corey Bohan
2010-06-12 14:50:00 A biker tests out Chicago's Stomping Ground course (no, it's not me) When I say my experience with BMX biking is pretty limited, I mean that I enjoyed the cheesy dirt bike 80's movie "Rad" a lot. I don't think I've actually been on a dirt bike since a few years after Rad was released. So, when I got invited to do a practice run with X-Games BMX champ Corey Bohan for a story for RedEye, I was thrilled. And maybe a little bit frightened. Sure, I wasn't going to traverse the dramatically steep ramps at Red Bull Stomping Grounds, the D.I.Y. dirt course built from the ground up empty industrial lot southwest of Wicker Park for a BMX competition....
Little Red: What I Learned From 3,000 Women on Bikes
2010-06-08 04:03:00 This past Saturday in Lewiston, Utah, something incredible happened. Three thousand women got together in Northern Utah for an annual ride known as Little Red. Officially known as the Little Red Riding Hood Ride, the event celebrated its 24th running courtesy of the efforts of the Bonneville Cycling Club, a group with over 500 members out of Salt Lake City who somehow thought that women from around the state (and country) might want to get together every year to raise money for charity, and generally get their ride on. The cause changes each year, but the spirit remains the same: support the idea that women like to ride bikes as much as the boys, and sometimes, it's nice to have an event to call your own.
Bikes, Trains, and not Automobiles
2010-04-22 15:30:00 I've talked in the past about encouraging more bikers to commute to work, but I've failed to integrate one type of bike commuter; the type that only bikes for part of their commute. Many people live too far from work to bike the entire distance and instead need to incorporate both their bike and the train as a means of getting to the office. The Metra and the CTA say they are bike-friendly, but let's fact it, they really aren't. In this post I will discuss a few ways that both the CTA and Metra can improve the commute for their distance commuters....

2010-04-01 06:00:00 If you're anything like me, as soon as this week's weather conditions work their way into the forecast, your limbs literally itch to start riding your bike.Perhaps you haven't yet heard the buzz, but earlier this month Google made it even easier for Chicagoans to two-wheel the town safely. Yes, Google maps has introduced a bicycling directions feature that will change your bike-riding life forever. In a neighborhood like Lincoln Park, which is rich with scenery and bike paths to boot, this new feature can become an indispensable tool for biking enthusiasts.Allow me to demonstrate...Move over, lake shore path, you're not the only bike friendly pavement in town! Google's new bike path directions allow two-wheeling commuters to veer off the lake...

Paramedics get on their bikes
2009-07-07 13:07:00 Under a new scheme being launched in Edinburgh and the Lothians, paramedics will be weaving in and out crowds by specialist bicycle. The bikes will become a regular feature at all large-scale spectacles, including the festival but will not act as a replacement for traditional vehicles. The objective is to allow paramedics ease of access among big crowds to carry out basic treatments. The two bikes ? which have been fully kitted out in bright ambulance colours and logos ? would give them an additional resource to respond to a variety of incidentsIt is unlikely the cycles will be on hand at sporting events or concerts, where emergency response will be left to more heavy duty vehicles. The mountain bikes are similar to ones occasionally used by Lothian and Borders police for the same purpose, and indicates a further branching out of the ambulance service. There are no plans to fit the bikes with flashing lights or sirens. Mr Alexander added: "I think the only siren will be the paramedic's...

Boobs on Bikes (Tette in motocicletta)
Mountainbikes vs Road Bikes
2008-07-04 01:04:00 I must admit that before I moved to Tenerife, I really didn’t fully understand this whole mountainbiking phenomenon. I mean, why would anyone intentionally choose to ride a bike on dirty, bumpy surfaces, in the middle of nowhere? They’re heavier than road bikes for a start. MTB drivetrains wear out quicker. Complex suspension components demand more maintenance. ...
Wooden Bikes
2008-06-19 08:42:00 Wooden bicycles can be found all over the world. These handmade bikes are often larger-scale scooters that you sit on. Made with whatever wood can be found, they use small wooden home-made wheels covered with discarded rubber rims. Forward movement depends on the rider pushing with their feet. These wooden bicycles are ridden in the Banaue region of the Philippines. During an annual festival celebrating the culture of the regional tribes, wooden bikes are raced by participants in native costume. Notice the cool foot-activated brakes. These photos are from the Flickr pool of Harry Palangchao. This kid bike is also found in the Philippines. This one too has a foot-actuated drag brake. The ones above are found in Burundi and were taken by Will Okun. These wooden bike scooters are used to haul cargo. Pushed up hill and then ridden down. Same idea in Ruhengeri, Rwanda. From Peter Strong at Camelworld. Wooden bike-truck in Goma, Republic of Congo. This one was found...

Morning Bikes
2008-06-05 04:21:00 Travis and I have been bike riding almost every morning for the past few days. We enjoy it. The kids enjoy it.. its just a nice escape for us... although its hard work :-)My legs are not in shape. Most of my workouts consist of abdominals or building lean muscle... so I dont really strain things or get overly hot during my workouts ... with bike riding though you get hot FAST and your legs burn. Atleast mine do!So it is a work out... but a good one... and I am thankful my husband can take that 30 - 45 minutes with us in the morning. Normally Travis wakes up around 4am... and that way he gets his praying time, studying and such done before we even wake. This allows him a bit of time with us in the morning... since during the day he is normally really busy... and many nights he has meetings and what not.Today after our bike ride I put the kids down for their quiet times... and got some laundry done. After the boys were up (Caleb just reads during this time, Taite sleeps) we went outsi...

Kawasaki And Suzuki: No Third Bikes For 2009, And No Kawasaki Wildcards
2008-06-03 16:11:00 For several years now, MotoGP grids have looked worryingly empty. The causes are well-known, and have been debated for years, but basically it boils down to the expense of fielding competitive machinery. The situation was exacerbated by the switch to 800cc: Just as all of the factories looked like getting a handle on the formula, the formula changed, requiring another vast sum of money to develop the new bikes. Dorna have relied very heavily on Honda to help fill out the grids, while putting pressure on the other manufacturers to start pulling their weight. Kawasaki and Suzuki have been particular targets, the two teams only field two bikes since they entered the class in 2002. It seemed as if 2009 would be the year the two factories finally relented, and fielded extra machinery. It now appears this is is not going to be the case. With the current season going well below expectations for both Kawasaki and Suzuki, both teams have decided to field only two bikes for the 2009 season,...
