2008-02-09 15:12:00 For his debut at Blass, Peter Som played with "a mix of luxurious opposites": masculine/feminine, high/low, day/evening. So, to a remix of Depeche Mode's 1990 proto-emo hit "Enjoy the Silence," models marched in jaunty outfits inspired by original Blass lookbooks from 1969 and 1970. "I was fascinated by the clothes, but also by the photographs, which are beautiful in themselves and tell so much about a place in time," Som said. There was a refreshing splash of woman-power appeal in the trouser suits and sharp tuxedos, which traded punches with a cadre of cocktail dresses dramatized with elaborate beading, feathers, and eyelash fringe. Although Som said he pictures the Blass woman as a bit more pragmatic than the woman who wears his own Peter Som label, this collection tilted more toward dressing up than dressing down. And while the town of Paisley, Scotland has long been associated with the design, paisley did not originate there. I wanna be a Miss Sixty girl!!Badgley Mischka -- Everything's pretty and all, but it doesn't really jump at you. You see a lot of the elements we saw this past spring and summer. Guess some are strong enough that the designer thinks they will carry into next year. Bill Blass -- Gorgeous in the classic Bill Blass way. But I wish the models had walked the runway and not just stood there. The dresses are exquisite, paired with models' old Hollywood glmamour hair and makeup.Abaeté -- very chic in that vacationing in Brazil kind of the feeling. Love the giant flower broches. Again you can see the '40s glamour influence.

VPOD: Pleasing Pleats
2007-08-30 14:22:00 Fortuny was the King of Pleats and most costume museums have one of his pleated gowns in their collection. According to one source, his pleats were created by evaporation when wet and folded silk was laid on heated tubes. Not sure what method was used to get the amazing pleats in today's VPOD, but Bill Blass certainly appears to be channeling the master here!This Bliss Blass design is from 1975-1985. And I just love so many things about this dress! First, let's talk about its yummy color combo of melon and pink. Then, it's tea length. It keeps it understated enough to wear in the afternoon or during the cocktail hour yet it is most definitely elegant enough for evening, too. And finally, we have those amazing pleats! They do take center stage, don't they? 2007-08-21 16:34:00 Bill Blass is an American fashion icon with quite an impressive resume that includes being a three-time winner of the Coty American Fashion Critics Award, the recipient of the first lifetime achievement award from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and one of the founding members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He was so successful designing for Maurice Retner on Seventh Avenue in New York, that he was one of the first designers to see his name on a label. His eye for design is legendary--just look at today's VPOD.This 1980s cocktail dress is very ooh-la-la.
