The Best Sportswriter Working Today: Six Great Bill Simmons Columns
2011-03-04 17:48:00 Bill Simmons is the best sportswriter working today. Period. To use his own terminology, he's a Pantheon guy, and I'm not even sure who else to include there. Like Jay-Z, he's leading the league in at least six statistical categories: funniest, most prolific, highest quality of content, strongest passion for his subject matter, most acute fan POV, and boldest stance on the issues that matter. Not rallying against a cause just for column fodder, but because __________ is important to his sports fan constitution and viewing enjoyment....

Thoughts on Vikings – Lions by Bill Simmons
2009-09-18 17:26:00 LIONS (+9.5) over Vikings Has Brad Childress ever given an interview in which it didn't look like he should be staring through penitentiary glass holding a black phone? (Wait a second, did I just pick the Lions? That was an accident. Hold on.) Vikings (-9.5) over LIONS Much better. I have two Adrian Peterson thoughts. First, he combines my favorite single qualities of five different great running backs: Walter Payton (the move where he breaks a tackle, then stiff-arms a tackler coming from behind to buy a second while getting his legs churning again); Barry Sanders (the part where he's so electric that it's just not worth betting heavily against his team because he can singlehandedly break you); Eric Dickerson (the way he cruises through a hole and you wait for him to kick it into another gear for a split second before realizing he's running away from everyone already); Emmitt Smith (a nasty edge that can only be described as "Look, there's no way we're losing this game and th...
Reaction to Bill Simmons Article on Manny Ramirez
2009-05-08 05:49:00 I have never written to Bill Simmons on any of his articles even though I've read a great many of them, and for obvious reasons, have admired the guy for quite some time. He's the OB - The Original Blogger...

Weekend Links
2008-10-11 16:38:00 There are times during the weekend when you?re waiting for the football game to start or looking to kill time before you go out. Well, I try to help by providing links that are informative and/or entertaining (or at the very least, a way to waste a few minutes). Here are some sports and Sarah Palin links:Former NFL player Ross Tucker writes on Sports Illustrated that Steeler fans are the best in the league. I?m not going to disagree. Are you looking for something to do this Columbus Day (that's Monday)? Head to the Forbes Field wall in Oakland (a Pittsburgh neighborhood, not the city in California) to celebrate the anniversary of the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates? World Series championship.ESPN?s Bill Simmons wrote an excellent piece about the recently fired Los Angeles Clippers General Manager, Elgin Baylor. While I knew that Baylor was a great basketball player, I never knew about his full history.I?m always amazed by Gilbert Arenas. He is a fascinating and likable individual who ...

Steelers-Jaguars Preview
2008-01-05 18:04:00 Welcome to Wild Card weekend! I am excited and nervous about tonight?s Steelers-Jaguars game, so I have been searching the web to see what the ?experts? think. The ESPN folks made the following predictions: Salisbury ? JaguarsHoge ? JaguarsJaworski ? JaguarsSchlereth ? JaguarsAllen ? JaguarsMortensen ? JaguarsGolic ? JaguarsWickersham ? Jaguars (who the heck is Wickersham?)In addition, Hank Goldberg picked the Jaguars on Sportscenter this morning and Bill Simmons chose the Jaguars in his column yesterday.Over at Deadspin, five of the seven picks went for the Jags:Cool Standings ? SteelersFootball Outsiders ? JaguarsMichael David Smith ? JaguarsBig Daddy Drew ? JaguarsDan Shanoff ? JaguarsAJ Daulerio ? JaguarsDeadspin ? SteelersCris Carter on Yahoo picked the Jaguars as did Peter King and Dr. Z (he?s probably as real of a doctor as McDreamy) at Sports Illustrated. On CBS Sports, Harmon, Prisco, Judge, Davis, Richard, and ?Spin? also selected the Jaguars to win.Based on my detailed st...

Why I Am Rooting Against the Red Sox
2007-10-25 02:53:00 Before you send me hate e-mail and comments, please bear with me. This post is not directed to die-hard Red Sox fans, the fans who suffered through years of heartbreak. I should also state that I dislike the Yankees (again, please hold off on the hate e-mail and comments) and always root for the Red Sox to defeat the Yankees, especially during the 2003 and 2004 American League Championship Series. I remember cheering for Red Sox in 1986 because, as a Pirates fan, I hated the Mets (I even have an autographed picture of Bill Buckner from when he was a Chicago Cub), and was excited for Boston when they won the World Series in 2004. The 2004 Red Sox were amazing as they became the first team in baseball history to come back from a 3-0 deficit. Unless you were a Yankees fan, how could you not like the team with the slogan ?Cowboy Up? and the nickname of the Idiots? They were a fun team and one that you wanted to support. However, at least in my mind, things have changed. The Red...

Another Bill Simmons Feud
2007-09-17 23:53:00 ESPN Page 2 Columnist Bill Simmons has now, according to the Big Lead, become embroiled in high-profile feud #3. Simmons has had a frosty relationship with ESPN Radio Host Colin Cowherd after Cowherd slammed his column on air, allegedly after only skimming it and not reading the whole thing.

CameraGate? SpyGate? Patriot Games? [J. Mark English]
2007-09-13 03:28:00 Call it what you want, but the New England Patriots being caught cheating is bizarre. Bill Simmons, the Sports Guy, has more:For the past 24 hours, since CameraGate was exposed, I've been trying to think of a good excuse for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. There has to be a good excuse, right? So why couldn't I think of one? How could I save them from America's scorn? How could I remove those three asterisks from the Super Bowl titles? Even when I channeled my inner O.J. and decided, "If Belichick did cheat in the Jets game, it's only because he loved the Jets too much," it didn't quite work. The truth is, there's probably no saving the Pats. Everyone outside New England was searching for a legitimate reason to hate them for the past four years, and now they have an excellent one. Spying on opponent's signals is just plain seedy. It's one step above playing footsie with someone in an airport men's room. It's a disgrace. It's embarrassing. Even though everyone probably ch...

The Art of Getting Away with It
2007-08-04 17:42:00 You may have heard about the comments made by Paul Zeise, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Zeise commented on the air at KDKA Radio:It's really a sad day in this country when somehow ... Michael Vick would have been better off raping a woman if you look at the outcry of what happened. Had he done that, he probably would have been suspended for four games and he'd be back on the field. But because this has become a political issue, all of a sudden the commissioner has lost his stomach for it.Personally, I think he has a point; however, I don't want to get into that today. The matter at hand is that he was suspended both from the radio show and from his paper for making this statement. This seemed outrageous to me at the time, as it was definitely an extraordinary overreaction. Essentially, Zeise made a statement that might offend some people, and since he isn't a very well-known sportswriter, the good people at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette decided that the easiest thing to do was t...
I knew Bill Simmons Would Be Pissed
2007-06-30 01:21:00 Live Blogging last night’s 2007 NBA Draft I stated that Bill Simmons would be pissed about his beloved Celtics trading the #5 pick, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak to the SuperSonics for Ray Allen and the #35 pick. Here are the comments Simmons had dedicated specifically to the Celtics-Sonics trade in his ‘Draft Diary XI’ column ...
Bill Simmons...That Is Common Sense?
2007-06-21 05:32:00 Mr. VP of Common Sense Bill Simmons took a break from the podcasts and making out with Ronald Jenkees to chime in on the draft. The Sports Guy himself tackled the tough decisions of the draft. Now, keep in mind I am reading this article as I type so I can get a more genuine reaction. Sometimes

Weighing In on Durant, Oden and Bill Simmons
2007-06-21 04:40:00 My turn. Now Bill, all I want from you is a real basketball explanation -- that, and the sense that you've actually watched the Blazers ever in your life. Let us begin with the ceilings, which need explaining. Every single player, in any sport, ever, has a ceiling. This is simply the nature of our

Bill Simmons may come out of hiding now
2007-05-30 20:44:00 With the news that Kobe Bryant wants out of Los Angeles, sports discussion will inevitably center around what it will take to get him out of there. Since this blog is based in Boston, here's a potential option for the Celtics: Celtics get: Kobe Bryant, Jordan FarmarLakers get: Paul Pierce, Sebastian Telfair, Rajon Rondo, No.5 pick in 2007 draft This way, the Lakers get a legit star in Pierce, a young playmaker, and a chance at whoever they want in the draft (Yi? Brewer?), the Celtics get Kobe and a project in Farmar, and Bill Simmons can come down off the ledge. We all win...sorta.

Quote of the Day: Bill Simmons
2007-05-17 15:54:00 “Blame them for dubious officiating that’s compromised the playoffs to the degree that an increasing number of fans are wondering where the WWE ends and the NBA begins.” Bill Simmons, of ESPN, on the NBA and NBA Officiating
Bill Simmons; Yankee fan.
2007-05-13 18:03:00 Quoted from yesterdays Bill Simmons mailbag: Q: Everyone outside of New York and Boston thinks Yankees and Red Sox fans are the same exact person living in two different cities. I see no difference at all between the two fan bases. You are both loud, obnoxious, have ridiculous accents, put stupid

[NBA] Bill Simmons finally gets his proof
2007-04-20 17:13:00 Bill Simmons (and basically everyone else) believes that the 1985 NBA draft lottery was fixed to give the NY Knicks the first pick in the draft, and thus Patrick Ewing. Well, proof (sorta) comes from YouTube video of the draft (copyright law? what copyright law?). By the way, who is keeping these videos ...

2007-04-13 21:24:00 Bill Simmons is an amusing man. He has now taken it upon himself to lead the charge against the Celtics' team management. It is true that he has been sharply critical of Doc Rivers for some time now, but the Sports Guy has now moved on to criticize Danny Ainge and the buffoons who write the checks. Suddenly, now that a writer with an exponentially larger profile than mine has joined me, I am not enjoying the anti-Banner 17 movement as much as I should.Simmons is convinced that the young players have not developed to the extent that many casual observers have been led to believe under River's slightly less than inspired leadership. That is clearly true, unless you consider Gerald Green winning the slam dunk competition as some tangible form of progression in genuine basketball skill and not raw athletic ability. The lone bright spot has been the continued development of Al Jefferson.I must say once again I am not convinced that Al Jefferson is going to continue progressing. Last ni...
Bill Simmons? Grade: Stupid
2007-02-24 22:32:11 I know I already made a trading deadline post, but this has to be done. I was reading Amar Panchmatia’s Cav’s blog and did something that I probably shouldn’t have done. That terrible decision was clicking a link to a Bill Simmons’ article. Now I usually never read article’s on a certain network’s webpage because of that stupid little Insider thing, but thats another rant for another day. Anyway back to that Simmons’ article, which was about the trading deadline and the lack of moves at the said deadline. In this article titled “No Balls Association” (Get it N.B.A.?), he graded, excuse me, ripped pretty much every team for not making moves at the deadline. Some of the grades he gave out included F-minus-minus-minus-minus, G, and my personal favorite…Z-infinity-minus-. So what did he give the Bulls? F-infinity-minus. Before I begin, I just have to say I am not upset that he bashed the Bulls, everyone has their own opinion, ...

Bill Simmons? Grammy Highlights
2007-02-12 23:15:03 Aside from being a fan of country fan I’m a huge sports fan, and my favorite sportswriter is Bill Simmons from ESPN. Occasionally Simmons will write about other topics in his column and it’s always an entertaining read. I’ve read a lot of articles on the Grammys today, but his highlights were by far the best. 8:10 — The Dixie Chicks play a song from their hit album, “Nobody Listened To Us — We Freaking Told You This Would Happen!” The two pretty ones are wearing black cocktail dresses; the semi-chubby one is wearing a white dress with a fluffy bottom. The Sports Gal is outraged. “It’s like the two skinny ones talked her into it so they could look even thinner,” she says. Um, OK. 9:11 — And the Grammy for “Song of the Year” goes to … the Dixie Chicks. Is this an awards show or a three-hour apology with trophies? 9:39 — Best moment of the night: LeAnn Rimes and Mandy Moore coming out to present ... |
