Bill Walton
2007-09-27 21:52:00

Author: Eric Subject: House Bill Would Nullify Broadcast Decency RulingPosted: Tue Sep 25, 2007 6:16 am (GMT -4) House Bill Would Nullify Controversial Broadcast Decency Ruling Jim Brown The Parents Television Council is backing a House bill aimed at restoring the FCC's ability to prohibit profanity and indecency on television during children's viewing hours. Congressman Chip Pickering (R-Mississippi) introduced the bill in response to a Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that bars the Federal Communications Commission from imposing fines on broadcast networks that air so-called "fleeting" instances of profanity on the public airwaves before 10:00 p.m. His measure -- known as the Protecting Children from Indecent Programming Act (HR 3559) -- "requires the FCC to maintain a policy that a single word or image may be considered indecent, in enforcing its regulations concerning the broadcast of indecent programming over the public airwaves." A window into what he achieved and the impact he had on so many lives was opened up at the public memorial service Friday at Candlestick. It was what you might call a West Coast service - innovative, entertaining and choreogra...

Commissioner Roger Goodell On Bill Walsh - NFLMedia.com
2007-08-06 19:53:00
NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL ON BILL WALSH:?His Hall of Fame coaching accomplishments speak for themselves, but the essence of Bill Walsh was that he was an extraordinary teacher. If you gave him a blackboard and a piece of chalk, he would become a whirlwind of wisdom. He taught all of us not only about football but also about life and how it takes teamwork for any of us to succeed as individuals. He helped the league on many important initiatives, from improving opportunities for minorities in coaching and the front office to our executive training and international development programs. Bill Walsh was a mentor to me and many others. He revolutionized the game with his ?West Coast Offense? and will always be remembered as one of the most influential people in NFL history.?
House Passes FY 2008 Agriculture Appropriations Bill With Provision To Allo
2007-08-04 14:00:00
The House on Thursday voted 237-18 to pass a $91 billion fiscal year 2008 Agriculture appropriations bill (HR 3161) with a provision that effectively would allow U.S. residents to purchase lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada and other nations, AP/USA Today reports (AP/USA Today, 8/3).Under the provision, FDA could not use federal funds to enforce a ban on prescription drug reimportation.Earlier on Thursday, the House voted 283-146 to reject an amendment proposed by Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) to remove the provision from the legislation. Kingston, who supports prescription drug reimportation, said that he proposed the amendment to establish a record of majority House support for the provision, according to CQ Today.Critics of the provision raised concerns about the safety of prescription drug reimportation. "What we are doing is throwing open the gates to every counterfeiter in the world," Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said.In an argument against passage of the amendment, Kingston...

Bill Walsh: A Multiple Innovator [Robert A. George]
2007-08-02 17:36:00
Quite appropriately, former 49ers head coach Bill Walsh who died Monday is remembered for his dynamic offensive play-calling and the great San Francisco dynasty he created. However, in the season after two black coaches made it to the Super Bowl, one shouldn't forget that Walsh was instrumental in integrating the head coach profession. In addition to starting the careers of Dennis Green and Ray Rhodes, he also launched the Minority Coaching Fellowship twenty years ago.A smart man and a good man. He will be missed.UPDATE: A full consideration of Walsh's career, including a coaching "family tree" -- linking him to Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith.Robert A. S.I.'s Michael Silver On Bill Walsh's Genius - The Passing Of Bill Walsh
2007-07-31 19:02:00
Early in his coaching tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, before he turned a long-suffering franchise into the greatest organization in professional sports, Bill Walsh once cut a player on the practice field.Enraged by a cheap shot, Walsh fired the player -- who, to be fair, was not one of the team's major contributors -- right there on the spot, ordering a member of the security staff to escort him out of the building. To underscore his point, Walsh trailed behind as the two men trudged toward the locker room, screaming, "Don't even let him f----- shower!"This was Walsh, who died today at 75 after a long bout with leukemia, at his most ruthless. Yet there was a calculated brilliance behind his brashness: After he took over in 1979, no Niner dared cross the new man in charge.Nearly a decade later, as he was losing his grip after having completed the most impressive NFL coaching run since Vince Lombardi's in Green Bay, Walsh sometimes directed his enmity toward members of the loc...
Bill Walsh will be missed
2007-07-31 18:25:00
Coaches of his caliber are a rare commodity, and it thus saddens me to offer my condolences to his family; Bill Walsh passed away yesterday. I also extend my condolences to 49ers fans who lost a great coach as well as a great representative of their team, the NFL. The Redskins issued a statement which can be found at the Official Site: In a statement released by the club, Snyder said: "Bill Walsh was one of the first people I met after buying the Redskins in 1999. We spent time together at league events and he was generous with his guidance for a rookie owner. His legacy is on display every time an NFL team takes the field. My prayers are with his family at this sad time." Coach Gibbs and Vinny Cerrato also spoke on Walsh's passing: Said Gibbs: "I was saddened to hear the news of Bill Walsh's passing today. My son [Coy Gibbs] had the opportunity to play under him at Stanford [from 1992-94]. His contributions to the NFL are well documented and his West Coast Offense remains prevale...
R.I.P. Bill Walsh
2007-07-31 16:51:00
Yesterday afternoon, the NFL lost a legend in former San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Bill Walsh. Walsh, who was 75 years old, lost a long battle with leukemia. The coach will be most remembered for pioneering the West Coast Offense, which is used by many current NFL teams, such as the Green Bay Packers While not a flashy offense the West Coast style played to a quarterback's strengths by using short, high-percentage passes. Many of today's NFL coaches are disciples of Walsh. Mike Holmgren was once an assistant for Walsh before turning the Green Bay Packers into an NFL powerhouse during the 1990s. Other coaches such as George Seifert, Dennis Green, and Jim Fassell, all were assistant coaches for Walsh. However, the list doesn't stop there. Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, Jon Gruden, Mike McCarthy, Mike Shanahan, and Andy Reid, are all products of the Bill Walsh coaching tree.
Something To Share About Coach Bill Walsh - Zennie Abraham
2007-07-31 11:40:00
I only met Coach Walsh three times, and on every occasion he always referred to me as "Lenny" rather than "Zennie" but he never refused to take time to talk to me about his system, and I was into the details of it, like the "hitch step" for example, which is simply the extra step a QB takes just before throwing, and the concept of throwing without a hitch step, which is hard as hell to do -- try it yourself. The point is that he would always share. But what really rankled me -- and still does today -- is how many people, reporters, incorrectly describe "The Walsh System." It's always "short, ball control" and left at that. That's so wrong.Yes, that was a part of it. But man, that wasn't even the difference. It was the way of thinking. To illustrate how different Coach Walsh's system was, let me compare it to the Dallas Cowboys passing game concept under Coach Tom Landry. The Cowboys were known for passing plays that essentially "pulled" a defense into a particular direction and t...

Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh dies NFL.com wire reports SAN FRANCISCO (July 30, 2007) -- Bill Walsh, the groundbreaking football coach who won three Super Bowls and perfected the ingenious schemes that became known as the West Coast offense during a Hall of Fame career with the San Francisco 49ers, has died. He was 75.Walsh died at his Woodside home following a long battle with leukemia, according to Stanford University, where he served as coach and athletic director."This is just a tremendous loss for all of us, especially to the Bay Area because of what he meant to the 49ers," said Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, the player most closely linked to Walsh's tenure with the team. "For me personally, outside of my dad he was probably the most influential person in my life. I am going to miss him."Walsh didn't become an NFL head coach until 47, and he spent just 10 seasons on the San Francisco sideline. Bill Walsh (1931 - 2007)
2007-07-31 04:34:00
Mike Shanahan, known in NFL circles as "The Mastermind", never actually got to coach under Bill Walsh.  Shanahan did coach under George Siefert in San Francisco for 3 seasons and for Walsh that was close enough.  For many of the readers of this site, just because we know the metrics of our readers, Bill Walsh is nothing more than a name, a man that sometimes would be featured on NFL Network, much like Vince Lombardi to my generation.  Sure, I know Lombardi is a legend, but I will never truly understand just how great he was.  I do understand how great Walsh was because the NFL that my youth was intertwined with was dominated in large part by Walsh, and his creation, a scheme simply known as the West Coast Offense. If you are a fan of Professional football you should take a moment to pay tribute to Walsh, and offensive pioneer, one of the few remaining men to learn his craft from Paul Brown.  As Broncos fans you should spend a few more minutes, learning all ...

Reader "Bill W" (who gets a ton of credit for e-mailing approximately 12 seconds after I posted the Volatile Player article) wanted to know who the most consistent players have been. The Baseball Lab aims to please...The most consistent player in all of baseball, of course, has been Alex Rodriguez who started the season ranked #1 and has remained at that ranking each and every week since. He is the only player in the game to do this. Avg Weekly Change: 0.0Jose Reyes could have been in the same boat as A-Rod, but he simply refuses to hit home runs and was passed up this week losing his grip as the #1 shortstop. Average weekly change: 0.2Russell Martin started the season ranked 7th and started out of the gate well, ending as the 6th ranked catcher. Since then however, it's been only #1's or #2's. Average weekly change: 0.6Perhaps a testament to how weak the 1st base crop is in the American League, Justin Morneau has been the most consistent 1st bagger this year. He's been ranked 1...
Record: Bill Willingham
2007-06-29 17:37:00
A writer whose works strike me as being more than bit overrated, but whose work on a few DC titles has certainly raised my eyebrows in concern. These include the following: In Robin, he put in quite a few negative swipes at females. For example, at the beginning, there was a female contract shooter tracking the Teen Wonder. Then, there were two of the mercenary Ravens, featured during the Batman: War Games crossover, all for the sake of it. And then, to hammer things to the very bottom, we had Spoiler being tortured by Black Mask?with a drill. She died later on the operating table in the Batcave, and the Masked Manhunter showed no genuine sorrow over her death. The above was made even worse in a subsequent story called War Crimes in Detective Comics where Leslie Thompkins says that she let Spoiler die to teach Batman a lesson about the perils of being a vigilante and superhero. She even invites him to shoot her dead with a firearm because she doesn?t have the courage to do it he...
