The Linux Ecosystem to More than Double to $49 Billion
2008-05-07 21:55:00 Linux may be a free platform for many and a reasonably inexpensive alternative to Unix and proprietary platforms for others, but make no mistake. For years, Linux has been big business, and if projections made by the market researchers at IDC turn out to be correct, in a few short years the Linux server ecosystem spending on hardware, software, and services directly relating to the platform will hit $49 billion by 2011. That's more than twice the $21 billion in Linux-related server spending that IDC reckons the companies of the world accounted for in 2007.[Here are some more 'statistics' for you - Scott]

The world's first billion-dollar house
2008-05-06 04:48:00 Not long ago I wrote about my trillion-dollar fantasy and my $2 billion dream house.Today, I'd like you to meet Mukesh Ambani, the world's fifth richest man. He is building the world's first $2 billion house--for real.EXTERIOR Antilla, the partially completed home of Mumbai-based petrochemicals giant Reliance Industries head Mukesh Ambani, will stand 27 stories high and is expected to cost $2 billion. Ambani, the fifth richest man in the world, his wife and three children currently live in a 22-story Mumbai tower the family has spent years remodeling and refashioning to meet its needs.BATHROOM One of Antilla's key design themes is the mix of lavish features seen in worldwide homes and elements that are distinctly Indian. The Gingko-leaf sink designs are a good example. Native to India, the leaves in the sinks are shaped in such a way that their stems guide water into the bowl created by the basket of the leaf.TRADITIONAL LOUNGE Ambani's home features countless lounges, offering...

?I Want the Oil Companies to Pay That $8 Billion?: Clinton Explains Gas Pla
2008-05-05 23:20:00 I'm confused. What does Hillary think she's going to do to force oil companies to eat $8 billion? What does she think she's going to do when they tell her "no"? With the "gas tax holiday", who's to say that the savings have to be passed onto consumers? The plan is simple: Offer a bounty for electric/renewable resources cars. For example: Offer say $10 billion to the first car company that can put together a car that gets 100+ miles to the charge/refill, passes ALL safety tests, and costs less than $25,000. You simply HAVE to force the hands of companies who have been dragging their feet on renewable resource using cars. If you don't, we'll all be paying through the nose for gas until it's too late. First car company that can do the above mentioned car, can count me as their first customer. Until that time, I'm hypermiling, and I have turned my 2005 Civic EX from 31-33mpg to 46mpg with some BASIC changes in my driving habits...

The World’s First Billion Dollar Home Sucks! How Would You Spend It?
2008-05-04 20:21:00 Just saw THIS pathetically un-embeddable video coverage of the world???s first billion dollar home???which is actually gonna cost $2 billion???and I felt pretty sick to my stomach. Sure, it???s just a small fraction of the guy, Mukesh Ambani???s, India???s richest person, $43 billion net worth and he has every right to what he wants with his hard earned money, but I couldn???t help but wonder how $2 billion might be better spent. For instance, for just about the same price Mukesh coulda woulda shouldla bought Wendy???s, whose 6,000+ stores bring in just over $500 mil in revenue each year. Or maybe take on a new industry by buying hot hot hot company Nanosolar. Then again, I guess a badass house is better than just throwing $2 billion away as Merrill Lynch chose to do Me: luxury goods and I don???t see to get along too well???I always lose or break them all???so I???d probly spend the money expand on my Tulane scholarship, building a worldwide financial education program???start youn...

Inside Antilla - World?s First $2 Billion House
2008-05-04 05:47:00 The Ambani home, called Antilla, now available on Google Earth is being valued at $2 Billion and when completed, the residence will reach 550 feet into the sky and offer 400,000 square feet of living space. Normally that is the equivalent of a 60 storeyed tower, but in this case each floor is more than twice the height of a normal floor, with the result that the building will only have 27 floors when completed. Given the prevailing state of skyscrapers in Mumbai, this building will be more than twice as tall as the earlier tallest buiilding. The view from the top will be breathtaking, no doubt. Ambani's net worth was at $43 billion in March 2008.Kind of makes Bill Gates? $125 million home look like some sort of slum. Some other absurd facts about Antilla.1. 3 helipads on top. Mumbai corporation has not given permission for making this operational yet. 2. Hanging gardens within the structure 3. Swimming pool within the structure 4. A two storey Health centre 5. Parking space for 168...
Wild, Wacky & True: Man Tries to Cash $360 Billion Check
2008-05-03 17:08:00 Charles Ray Fuller must have been planning one big record company. The 21-year-old North Texas man was arrested last week for trying to cash a $360 billion check, saying he wanted to start a record business. Tellers at the Fort Worth bank were immediately suspicious — perhaps the 10 zeros on a personal check tipped them off. Fuller, of suburban Crowley, was arrested on a forgery charge. He was released after posting $3,750 bail. Fuller said his girlfriend’s mother gave him the check to start a record business. But bank employees who contacted the account’s owner said the woman told them she did not give him permission to take or cash the check. In addition to the forgery count, Fuller was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon and possessing marijuana. Officers reported finding less than 2 ounces of marijuana and a .25-caliber handgun and magazine in his pockets. The man is an utter genius!

U.S. population to hit 1 billion in 2100, prof says
2008-04-29 16:36:00 It’s often difficult to get the attention of my students. But when I told them that it’s possible that a few of them would see the year 2100, and that most of their children surely would, they stopped furtively texting under their desks and began paying attention. When I was born just after World War II, I told them, the population of the United States was about 141 million; of the world, about 2.7 billion. Now, 62 years later, Americans tip the scale at about 303 million; the world’s population has grown to about 6.6 billion. A little extrapolation of U.S. Census data, I told them, shows the American population hitting 518 million at mid-century and 758 million in 2100. The world’s population is likely to grow to 14 billion at century’s end. Imagine what that world ? their world ? would be like, I challenged them. But I was too optimistic. In a report to be released today, a Virginia Tech professor estimates that between 2100 and 2120 the population of...
