Biodiesel?s fate in Farm Bill reauthorization uncertain
2008-05-12 20:36:00
Will American farmers continue get Federal help to grow biodiesel feedstock? Under the current compromise in the Farm Bill that's going through a reauthorization, the answer to that question is yes. But the White House is apparently going to veto the biodiesel provisions that allow farmers who make up to $2.5m a year still qualify for crop subsidies. Rumor is that an official verdict might be coming out today sometime. The National Biodiesel Board (NBB), for its part, likes the compromise and said so in a press release that came out late last week. The issue revolves around the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Bioenergy program, which the NBB says is "a key element in America's energy solution." Unfortunately for farmers, feedstock costs are jumping up in price (what isn't, these days? Houses, I guess). The CCC Bioenergy program is worth $300 million. Nova Biosource makes first million gallon of biodiesel in Indiana
2008-05-09 22:51:00
Nova Biosource announced that its Illinois-based refinery has reached the million gallons milestone after 25 days of production. The plant is expected to reach 60 million gallons of ASTM standard biodiesel per year using three processing trains, although the milestone was reached with only one. Other Nova refineries in Wisconsin and Mississippi have a single train that produces 20 million gallons each. The company's global production is estimated between 180 and 220 million gallons of biodiesel per year.Nova claims to use locally generated, low-cost feedstocks, including rendered animal fats and oils and recycled vegetable and animal-based greases which are not suitable for human consumption.[Source: Nova Biosource]
We?re telling you for the last time, ethanol is not biodiesel
2008-05-09 05:20:00
Photo by merfam. Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0.Sure, you might be able to describe the difference between cellulosic ethanol made by Coskata and that made by Mascoma. Or, perhaps your biofuel knowledge is just right to explain how cellulosic ethanol and corn ethanol are different, and what each might mean to the environment. But trust me, the general public has a long way to go to understand what all these new fuel types are. Remember the posts about filling up with the wrong fuel?Anyway, I'd just like to point out this letter to the editor that appeared in today's Washington Post. In a May 3 editorial called "The Greening of Montgomery," the WaPo mangled the difference between biodiesel and ethanol, suggesting that while switching Montgomery County's fleet of diesel cars to biofuels would be a good move, because of the problems with ethanol, care should be taken. A reader, Lynne Tucker of Bethesda, wrote in to clarify just which biofuel can go into what type of eng...

Chelsea Sexton gets a biodiesel-powered makeover
2008-05-07 22:56:00
OMG, Chelsea Sexton is so slumming with the biofuel folks! The staunch plug-in car supporter was in Santa Monica last week and participated in a eco-makeover courtesy of Elle Magazine and the publication's biodiesel-powered salon/bus. Ecorazzi's Anna Griffin was at the scene (that's her with the mic) and got the scoop on why one of the most prominent faces of today's EV movement - Sexton was a big part of Who Killed the Electric Car? and today works with Plug In America on electric vehicle issues (protesting Toyota, for example) - would deign enter the Elle Eco Spa Bus. The bus has got some eco-cred, that's why, and even though the bus doesn't feature a plug, it is raising money to plant trees around the U.S.Elle is just one fashion icon that's interested in green transportation. Last year, for example, supermodel Laura Bailey helped launch ibuyeco, a green-themed insurance program. And Tyra Banks took her supermodel reality show on the biodiesel route last year, as well.[Sou...

DTE Energy will use biodiesel in 800 Vehicles
2008-05-04 02:39:00
The DTE Energy company, which provides natural gas and electric services to Michigan customers, is going to start using biodiesel in its fleet of 800 diesel trucks and service vehicles (things like bucket trucks and light-duty vehicles). DTE will present a ceremony on Tuesday to mark the shift to the biofuel, but didn't announce the percentage of biodiesel it will be using. DTE did say that Michigan-based biodiesel supplier RKA Petroleum will provide the fuel and that the switch is the "environmental equivalent of taking about 120 of those vehicles out of service." Since "environmental equivalent" can mean a lot of things, we can't just calculate the biofuel percentage. What we do know is that even if you're providing energy to a lot of people, greening up your own supply isn't a bad idea.[Source: DTE Energy]

NorthStar Moving powers their fleet with biodiesel
2008-04-29 01:02:00
California's NorthStar Moving Corporation has just converted all of its trucks to run on biodiesel fuel. All of the fuel used by the moving and storage company will now be veggie-based. Additionally, their fleet of vehicles has also been fitted with battery-powered rear lift gates as opposed to hydraulic, meaning that the engine does not need to idle for extended periods. NorthStar reportedly has tried greening other aspects of their operation. All of their boxes and stationery are made from recycled material and are reused when possible. The company claims that skylights and windows are used for natural lighting when possible and their warehouses are well-insulated. We applaud these efforts, of course, especially the use of biodiesel. With diesel prices as high as they are, we wonder what impact biodiesel may have on the market, considering that cost is often a driving factor when it comes to our energy needs.Press Release:California's premier full service moving and storage comp...

How to host a biodiesel film festival
2008-04-22 02:58:00
Over at the La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley, California on Wednesday night, the people behind Berkeley's Biofuel Oasis are hosting a biodiesel film night in order to raise funds and biofuel awareness. The funds are intended for BBO's new solar powered fueling station and the awareness, well, that's just there for its own sake. One of the films, Fat of The Land, documents a 1994 trip by four women around the U.S. in a biodiesel-powered "Fat Mobile," making their fuel in fast-food restaurant parking lots. The filmmaker will be attending the festival, so if you have questions on how biodiesel was received by the general public in the mid-1990s, this could be a chance to ask. Other video entertainment on the schedule includes excerpts from Revolution Green and Freedom Fuels. There will also be an "Ask a Mechanic" booth and free homemade organic popcorn. If you've got a biodiesel co-op or other green group in your neighborhood, using the template from this event might be a good i...
National Biodiesel Board sees the cleaner side of Bush?s GHG plan
2008-04-21 17:53:00
The President has at least one fan of his vague call last week to halt to greenhouse gas emissions growth in the U.S. by 2025. Kind of.While Oxfam America said Bush was "ignoring reality" with the plan, the National Biodiesel Board has come out in favor of at least some parts of the plan. In a short statement issued last week (pasted after the jump) the NBB doesn't take a stand on whether the plan is the right one or the best one, it does say that biodiesel is a good way to reduce GHG emissions, and that growing more domestic biodiesel crops will "help America achieve this vital goal." NBB CEO Joe Jobe said that the biodiesel industry is ready to work with all politicians to "address climate change."Press Release:Biodiesel Addresses President's Call on Greenhouse Gas Emissions WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, President Bush announced an intermediate goal for reducing America's greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 captured to feed biodiesel-producing algae
2008-04-12 17:15:00
Two companies, Holcim and Aurantia are starting a new project to reuse CO2. They take the CO2 produced by a cement plant in Jerez de la Frontera in Spain and "feed" it to microalgae which then turn around and produce biodiesel. The results of this project will be tested to assess if the carbon dioxide supplied by the cement plant is suitable for the algae. The two companies will also select the best type of algae for the project as well as assessing the viability of the project. The test will be performed on an-almost industrial scale, so once the final green light is given, it could start working immediately.[Source: Econoticias]

Dubai makes big biodiesel investment in Malaysia

Photo by Soylentgreen23. Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0.As we noted when Dubai announced a test of GM Hybrids for taxi and limo service, just because the Emirate has a lot of oil doesn't mean it isn't interested in checking out alternatives. News is out today that the Dubai Group has made a large ($49.5 million U.S.) investment in Malaysian biodiesel company GBD and now has a 30 percent stake in that company. The emirate-owned Dubai Investment Group's CEO, Abdulhakeem Kamkar, said that renewable energy and biofuels are the "preferred industry focus" for the DIG (the DIG is a subsidiary of Dubai Group). By the end of the year, GBD's huge biodiesel plant should be able to produce up to 500,000 metric tons of biodiesel a year from palm oil (d'oh) and jathropha. [Source: Cleantech]
Biodiesel - The Facts On What Is Going On

BioTrucker card helps NBB get more biodiesel to truckers
2008-03-30 19:52:00
Thank in part to Willie Nelson and Carl's Corner, long haul truckers were some of the first big proponents of biodiesel in America. The new BioTrucker Fuel Card will not only help eco-ready truckers to find service stations that sell the biofuel, but can also save them at least a little bit at the pump. BioTrucker, a National Biodiesel Board website, is now offering the card that is accepted at over 5,000 "truck stops and truck accessible locations" in the U.S. Three stations (Sapp Bros. Travel Centers in Peru Illinois, Waddy Unocal 76 in Waddy, Kentucky, and Drivers Truck Stop in Ft. Worth, Texas) discount biodiesel two cents a gallon for BioTrucker Fuel Card holders. At the other locations, the card can be used to pay for fuel at the cash price (no credit mark up). Card holders can also get other benefits like the ProMiles route planning software and repair and tire discounts. [Source: BioTrucker via Environment News Service]

Biodiesel-fuel for the 21st Century
2008-03-26 23:41:00
In this new age where fuel is the most precious commodity available, it is time that mankind turned to a more efficient, safer, cleaner, renewable fuel for use in our massively transportation dependent society. The answer to a century of wars over oil and the horrendous aftermath thereof are simply, in one word - biodiesel. Biodiesel has been around for over a century, but only recently has the world awakened to a need for fuels at any cost that will not destroy our already fragile ecosystem, and you will soon know why the whole world should be excited. Biodiesel was first synthesized back in 1893 before the first diesel engine was even developed. Biodiesel is essentially oil of any type-be it animal fat or vegetable oil that has been reacted with an alcohol in a process called transesterification. The chemical name of the results of this reaction is mono-alkyl ester or biodiesel, and glycerol-common glycerin. Biodiesel can be used as an alternative to petrodiesel in more a...
Mcgyan process makes biodiesel the newfashioned way
2008-03-26 21:05:00
The closest I've ever come to making biodiesel was helping a friend build and run an appleseed reactor. It did produce some biodiesel, but he was in charge of the project and I just lent a hand. I say this because that method made at least some sense to me: put your veggie oil and methanol together, heat, work a little magic, dry it, and you're good to go. Researchers at Augsburg College in Minnesota, though, have discovered a quick new way to make biodiesel that's beyond my technical understanding. Still, it seems to be an exciting new process. According to Biodiesel Magazine, Brian Krohn (and undergrad student) and his advisor, Arlin Gyberg, and two other researchers figured out that using zirconia as a catalyst can make biodiesel from oil and alcohol in six seconds. That's freakin' fast. If you have the raw materials, the researchers say, this new Mcgyan process can make three million gallons of biodiesel from one column that's two feet long and four inches in diameter. The...
