America Going Green: U.S. to Provide 71% of World?s Biofuels by 2021?
2011-10-27 17:59:00 A recent study, released on 11 October, "Biofuel Markets and Technologies" released by Pike Research states that the global biofuel market will double within the next decade to $183.3 billion from its current level of $82.7 billion, with ethanol production accounting for $78 billion of future worldwide biofuel production, while predicting that biodiesel production will reach $25.5 billion. Perhaps not surprisingly, Pike Research predicts that the US will become the world’s leading biofuel producer, accounting for 71 percent of alternative fuel by 2021. Colorado-based Pike Research on its website defines itself as "a market research and consulting firm that provides in-depth analysis of global clean technology markets." Vivian Lewis: If Obama wins ... bet on biofuels

But it is also an alternative energy play because Brazil leads the world in production and distribution of ethylene, a policy undertaken after the first oil price shock of 1974."Obama is not happy with U.S. dependence on OPEC oil imports; and, obviously, the Brazilians are much less of a threat to our values, with the country now a democracy with free elections and a rather liberal economic policy.“The U.S. ethylene market ...

Amongst the experts are economist Keith Wiebe of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N.; Dr. Richard Pike, chief of the Royal Society of Chemistry; and environmentalist Deepak Rughani of Biofuelwatch. The main takeways seem to be that: A - Some biofuels will work well and others will not B - "Bio" does not necessarily mean "clean" B - Creating fuel from growing things takes a lot of land.

Biofuels - Achilles Heel of Global Warming
2008-04-22 18:47:00 As the myth around global warming begins to unravel and Operation Desperation sets in, it's important for the public to know why biofuels aren't the answer to solving global warming. For those that don't know, biofuels are alternative energy sources derived from living matter, as opposed to fossil fuels, such as oil, which are derived from nonliving matter. The most common biofuel is a blend of gasoline called E85, which means it's 15% gasoline and 85% ethanol. However, the gasoline and ethanol content changes depending on the season. During cold weather, more gasoline needs to be added to the mixture to ensure the fuel works properly, so E85 is at least 70% ethanol. If biofuels are going to reduce our dependency on foreign oil, what's the big deal? Ethanol, without consideration of other factors, could cut our dependency on foreign oil. However, ethanol as a fuel still requires gasoline to function properly. As stated in the previous paragraph, cold weather is especially trying...

Biofuels are an ?Unlikely Foe? of the Grocery Manufacturers Association
2008-04-20 04:17:00 The Grocery Manufacturers Association. Not a group we hear from a lot on a site dedicated to cleaner vehicle technology. Today, though, in preparation for Earth Day, we saw a message from the GMA titled "This Earth Day, an Unlikely Foe: Biofuels" and wanted to see what they had to say. As the headline suggests, the GMA is taking a stance against biofuels made from food sources and all of the problems that can occur thanks to "the rush to find a 'homegrown' solution to global warming." The GMA invited three people - Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute, Ken Cook of the Environmental Working Group, and Jonathan Lewis of the Clean Air Task Force - to Washington, D.C. this week to speak out against using food sources to make biofuels. The short list of what's wrong with growing crops to make fuel are: increased environmental damage in the form of pollution from coal-fired ethanol refineries runoff from fertilizer rapid deforestation in the developing world an inflationary e...

Biofuels: A Threat and a Cause of World Hunger
2008-04-13 20:37:00 Cross-posted by Maggie at Maggie's NotebookIn an op-ed dated April 10th, the The New York Times says that the world is getting hungrier because corn, wheat and soy prices are through the roof.Last year, the food import bill of developing countries rose by 25 percent as food prices rose to levels not seen in a generation.Corn doubled in price over the last two years. Wheat reached its highest price in 28 years....The United States and other developed countries need to step up to the plate. The rise in food prices is partly because of uncontrollable forces ? including rising energy costs and the growth of the middle class in China and India....Now, any country with a growing middle class...well, that's good news, but still yet, the NYT tells us, the problem is that old familiar culprit - the "rich world," which has been arrogant enough to produce biofuels. "...industrial nations are not generous" and "rich countries' energy policies helped create the problem."The unnamed editoriali...

The Biofuels Law: Ethical Aspects
2008-04-08 02:50:00 I just saw another interesting article from GMANews.TV. It?s actually the conclusion of a two-part special. The first one focused on ?Arroyo brother-in-law to use biofuels law to evade CARP?? Now, this one, focusing on "Ethical lapses mark passage of Biofuels Law, says report," is just as interesting as the first. And I kid you not! Read on, friends! There is perhaps no lawmaker as enthusiastic about biofuels as Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri. Zubiri was still congressman for the third district of Bukidnon when he became principal author of the House bill that eventually became Republic Act 9367 or the Biofuels Act. He campaigned hard to get other lawmakers to support the measure that he earned himself the nickname ?Mr. Biofuel." His official page in the Senate website describes him as the ?father of the Biofuels Act of 2006."A-KiD: I believe I made a post on this sometime ago. Link is here. Zubiri?s campaign for biofuels appears to be in keeping with his pro-environment image. Biof...

2008-04-08 00:28:00 A special report from GMANews.TV caught my attention. "Arroyo brother-in-law to use biofuels law to evade CARP?," is one interesting read. And I kid you not! Read on, friends! One of those engaged in this move is presidential brother-in-law Ignacio ?Iggy" Arroyo who hurdled last month most of the government requirements needed to convert his family?s 157-hectare Hacienda Bacan in Isabela, Negros Occidental into agro-industrial uses, mainly for the production of ethanol. If the conversion pushes through, farmers charge that Arroyo will succeed in evading the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program, which covers rice, corn and sugar lands. It will nullify the claims of 67 farmer-beneficiaries who have been waiting for more than a decade for the Department of Agrarian Reform to award them Hacienda Bacan. Local DAR officials fear the Hacienda Bacan farmers will generate a big storm of protests. A-Kid: I can?t blame the farmers if they do decide to push through with their protests. ...
