Scientists determine structure of brain receptor implicated in epilepsy and
2008-03-10 15:25:00
Scientists funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) have published new research in the journal Molecular Pharmacology identifying the structure of a receptor in the brain implicated in conditions such as epilepsy and pre-menstrual tension. The same receptor has also been reported to be highly sensitive to alcohol. The University of Cambridge team, in collaboration with colleagues at Aston University and the University of Alberta, have determined the arrangement of the constituent parts of an uncommon but important type of GABA receptor in the brain. GABAA receptors in the central nervous system play important roles in the body?s response to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical used by the brain to control certain functions. By understanding how the receptors? sub-units are arranged, scientists may now be able to develop drugs to block or stimulate them, providing hope for sufferers of a range of conditions. Different types of GABAA recepto...

Biotechnology Transforms Animal Waste to Human Wealth
2008-01-21 05:17:00
A North Carolina State University scientist has developed a system called thermophilic anaerobic digestion, which converts animal waste into various useful products, including methane gas for fuel, liquid nutrients for aquaculture, and nutrient-rich feed additives for the poultry and livestock industries. The thermophilic anaerobic digestion process involves enclosing animal waste in containers with heat-loving bacteria. The waste in the digester unit is heated to more than 115 degrees F. Bacteria in the digester then convert the waste into biogas, which can be used as fuel. The bacteria also destroy pathogens in the solid residue that remains. These by-products can then be processed as sanitary, nutrient-rich feed supplements. The demonstration projects in North Carolina indicate that the thermal recyclers are very productive. This simple method for processing animal waste, may someday lead to the productive use of the 500 million tons of poultry and livestock waste produced in the Un...

Biotechnology in India: Public-Private Partnerships
2007-10-31 06:05:00
My recent article on 'Biotechnology in India: Public-Private Partnerships' has been accepted by the Journal of Commercial Biotechnology, published from UK. Please take a look at the abstract below.Abstract The purpose of the study being a survey of public sector- private industry collaborations of the biotechnology sector in India, an organizational and functional overview of this sector was needed. Therefore, rather than studying a hypothetical biotechnology sector in India, the area of this work confined to study the public-private partnerships (PPP) that are occurring in India in the area of modern biotechnology. The Indian Government has been playing an important role in the development of biotechnology sector from the very beginning and there are large numbers of R&D institutions (Scientific, Medical, Industrial and Agricultural) which have been set up by the Government during the past two-three decades. Indian Biotechnology industry is advancing towards new heights in ...
Risk-reduced cost management practices in biotechnology companies
2007-10-19 06:51:00
Looking at the most successful large biotech companies like Amgen, Biogen or Genentech, and their FIPCO (Fully integrated bio/pharmaceutical company) model, which has the ability to discover, develop, manufacture and market their own drug; it is evident that the risk-reduced cost management practices plays a significant role in retaining the majority of profits for the company. The newly start-up biotech companies strive for survival in today’s competitive environment. It is a general impression that, as we discover more about the genome, we are closer to finding the causes and treatments for the life-threatening diseases. On the contrary, since we do not know that yet; probably more time-span will be required to arrive at a time and cost-effective treatment for a disease. Rising R&D costs and falling numbers of marketing approvals has been the subject of growing attention. To improve the overall probability of success, there is a growing positive perception within the biotec...
