Deep Brain Stimulation Tested On Bipolar Subjects Unresponsive To Other Tre
2012-01-03 13:00:00
Deep brain stimulation, or DBS, is in its early experimental stages; this study, for example, had only 17 subjects. But when you cut into a person's skull and implant electrodes on either side of the brain while people are awake, it's probably not that easy to attract willing subjects. Nevertheless...

Bipolar Love

“And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” -Matthew 22:39-40 If there is one verse I think we, Christians, continually get wrong, it’s this one. It helps that Jesus thinks it’s in the top two. If every sermon ever preached dealt only with this command, “love your neighbor as yourself,” I think we might be in a better place then we are now. Instead we have a sort of Bipolar love. We spend all kinds of time and ...
New bipolar disorder research from P.F. Bell et al outlined
2009-11-24 03:05:00
According to recent research published in the journal Postgraduate Medicine, ?Recognition of the prevalence of mood disorders and increased availability of medication options have led to calls for treating bipolar disorders in the primary care setting. Second-generation antipsychotic medications (SGAs) were initially lauded for treating bipolar disorders because of their efficacy and perceived safety relative to first-generation antipsychotic medications.? ?Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, which may emerge when treating bipolar disorders with SGAs. We conducted a search of the research literature examining the association between different SGAs and metabolic syndrome,? wrote P.F. Bell and colleagues. The researchers concluded: ?Based on our review, we offer guidelines for monitoring patient status regarding metabolic syndrome and for providing interventions to promote healthy diet and exercise.?
About Bipolar Depression
2009-10-29 17:08:00
You may not understand much about some mental disorders, but they are something that can happen to almost anyone. Even those that have gone through most of their lives with no issues what so ever may end up with something wrong. When this happens, they soon learn that there is no way to truly understand a disorder like this without having gone through it. That does not mean someone cannot understand some of it, but it does mean that the patient must do their best to help someone understand at least some of it. Those with bipolar depression may have a hard time doing this because the condition can be very complex. There are two parts to a bipolar disorder. Someone with this condition has moments of mania and then periods of depression. That is why this disorder is sometimes called ?manic depressive?. The two states are the total opposites of each other. The mania period is usually short while the bipolar depression state can go on for months at a time. This depression can be very bad,...
TIPS to cure Bipolar disorder.
2009-08-18 03:50:00
People often have common questions about the basics of manic depression. These are some of the most commonly asked questions ? and their answers ? about manic depression (also known as bipolar disorder):Is there a test to tell me if I have, or may inherit, bipolar disorder?Currently, no test can tell a person if he is at risk of developing bipolar disorder. It is unlikely that a single gene will be discovered that is responsible for the illness in all people with bipolar disorder. Can someone have a medical condition that appears to be bipolar disorder but actually is something else? Certain conditions mimic mood disorders, including bipolar disorder. Common ones are: thyroid conditions, neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, stroke or epilepsy infections of the brain from conditions such as HIV infection, syphilis, sleep apnea and lyme disease deficiencies of certain vitamins, such as vitamin B12 corticosteroid use, especially in high doses medicine used to...
Some conditions misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder
2009-08-13 15:53:00
A study published last year suggested that bipolar disorder may be over diagnosed in people seeking mental health care. Now new findings shed light on which disorders many of these patients actually have. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, involves dramatic swings in mood?ranging from debilitating depression to euphoric recklessness. In the original 2008 study, researchers at Brown University School of Medicine found that of 145 adults who said they had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, 82 (57 percent) turned out not to have the condition when given a comprehensive diagnostic interview.
Bipolar Disorder
2009-06-05 13:59:00
Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disease characterized by episodes of extreme mood swings, depression and mania.Types of bipolar disorder:Bipolar I Disorder is mainly defined by manic or mixed episodes that last at least seven days, or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care. Usually, the person also has depressive episodes, typically lasting at least two weeks. The symptoms of mania or depression must be a major change from the person's normal behavior.Bipolar II Disorder is defined by a pattern of depressive episodes shifting back and forth with hypomanic episodes, but no full-blown manic or mixed episodes.Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (BP-NOS) is diagnosed when a person has symptoms of the illness that do not meet diagnostic criteria for either bipolar I or II. The symptoms may not last long enough, or the person may have too few symptoms, to be diagnosed with bipolar I or II. However, the symptoms are clear...
My Life With Bipolar 3/15/2009
2009-03-23 15:32:00
By Shawn W. Philpot I've made my mistakes in this world this is true. But dealing with Bipolar is not easy for me and you. I've had this disease since I was five in my youth. My parents have been there throughout my mistakes. But they don't just love for the old time sakes. They love me more then I love my own life this is true. They do this for me because there heart is pure and true. People have seen me in my mania and depression. They do not understand the pain and suppression. So if you know someone with this disease and infliction. Don't be too hasty to judge us with your conviction. Our emotions are on overload so be careful with you suspicions.  read more &raqu-o;
Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder share gene factors
2009-01-18 03:05:00
A Swedish registry study involving more than 2 million families confirms that first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disease are at increased risk for both disorders. ?These findings highlight the need for identification of genes for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, as well as for genes common to both disorders,? lead investigator Dr. Paul Lichtenstein told Reuters Health. Epidemiological studies and genetics research have suggested a possible overlap in genetic susceptibility between the two disorders, but the data have been inconsistent, Lichtenstein at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and his associates note in The Lancet.
Children of older fathers more likely to have bipolar disorder
2008-09-01 18:45:00
Older age among fathers may be associated with an increased risk for bipolar disorder in their offspring, according to a report in the September issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Bipolar disorder is a common, severe mood disorder involving episodes of mania and depression, according to background information in the article. Other than a family history of psychotic disorders, few risk factors for the condition have been identified. Older paternal age has previously been associated with a higher risk of complex neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. Emma M. Frans, M.Med.Sc., of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues identified 13,428 patients in Swedish registers with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. For each one, they randomly selected from the registers five controls who were the same sex and born the same year but did not have bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder in late life: clinical characteristics in a sample of olde
2008-07-29 20:36:00
Bipolar disorder in late life: clinical characteristics in a sample of older adults admitted for manic episode Although manic episodes in older adults are not rare, little published data exist on late-life manic episodes. Resistance to treatment and concomitant neurological lesions are frequent correlates of elderly mania. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hospitalizations due to mania in patients older than 64 years through a period of 5 years in an Italian public psychiatric ward. Moreover, we aimed at describing clinical presentation of elderly manic episodes. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted in order to describe clinical presentation of 20 elderly patients hospitalized for manic episode; moreover, we compared age at onset, the presence of family history for mood disorders, psychosis and irritability between the elderly group and a matched group of 20 younger manic inpatients.

When you think or do something different it would be nice is someone might give you some information on what you have and how to deal with it. For many years I had ADD and did not find out about it until I was in my 30's. Experts troubled by at-home bipolar gene tests
2008-03-23 22:27:00
SAN DIEGO - Dr. John Kelsoe has spent his career trying to identify the biological roots of bipolar disorder. In December, he announced he had discovered several gene mutations closely tied to the disease, also known as manic depression. Then Kelsoe, a prominent psychiatric geneticist at the University of California, San Diego, did something provocative for the buttoned-down world of academic medical research: He began selling bipolar genetic tests straight to the public over the Internet last month for $399.His company, La Jolla-based Psynomics, joins a legion of startups racing to exploit the boom in research connecting genetic variations to a host of health conditions. More than 1,000 at-home gene tests have burst onto the market in the past few years.(You can catch the full story here...)I don't know about you, but the sheer thought of a DNA test for bipolar disorder scares the crap out of me. As a scientist myself, I fully understand that either the presence or absence of poorl...

2008-03-14 17:50:00
Details surrounding Heath Ledger's life and death are being discusses by his ex-girlfriends. From what I can glean, Heath Ledger may have suffered from bipolar disorder. His girl friend said that Ledger "had bouts with insomnia" for as long as she knew him, and that he "just had too much energy." Michelle Williams said:that Ledger's mind was "always turning," and he'd often "jump out of bed" due to his "uncontrollable energy." "Heath Didn't Know Limits." Williams continued by saying "the interesting thing about Heath, which maybe people have only really fully discovered in his death, is how vulnerable he was." She says despite his rugged looks and physical appearance, "there was always that underlying sensitivity. That's who he was."It is now clear to me that Heath Ledger was self-medicating with benzodiazepines, pain killers and sleeping pills. This was the wrong medicine. He needed to be...

2008-03-12 18:26:00
Finally, Governor Eliot Spitzer announced  that he is resigning, completing a spectacular fall from power for a politician whose once-promising career imploded amid allegations that he paid thousands of dollars for high-end prostitutes. Spitzer built his career by relentlessly persecuting organized crime, money laundering, prostitution rings and his enemies. He never showed any mercy for his targets.  Yet, he thought he was invincible by engaging in illegal, risky and inappropriate sexual activity. This is classic bipolar behavior. What are the symptoms of  bipolar disorder?:Increased energy Little fatigue An increase in activities Inflated self-esteem Impaired Judgment Lack of insight Inappropriate humor Inappropriate behaviors Impulsive behaviors Financial extravagance Grandiose thinking Increased  Sexuality Including  inappropriate or sexual behaviorAnd then the bipolar behavior ultimately causes a downfall of colossal proportion.
