The Fear of Biscuits
2008-08-13 19:51:00
A fellow blogger, and 101 in 1001 participant, Cafe Chick asked me about #19 on my list. #19. Get over my fear of opening the biscuitsThis is really on the list as something for Hubby as it drives him crazy that I won't open them.Have you ever seen these? They are pre-cut pieces of biscuit dough that come in a pressurized can and be found in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. Hubby would love to have rolls or biscuits with every single meal if he could, and many nights we do. Seeing as I am a bit lazy, we don't always go homemade with our bread. Most of the time dinner rolls are made from flour and love, but some nights I allow that cute little Pillsbury dude to do it for me. Have you ever opened one of these bad boys? They pop. Sort of like a cheapie Colorado firework that you pull the string and it pops as confetti flies out. Only with the biscuits, you peel the paper and you never know when it is going to pop. It just surprises you, and it startles the heck out of me...
Herb Scallion Drop Biscuits
2008-06-04 23:06:00
These aren’t southern biscuits- notice the absence of shortening, lard, or butter. I made these with olive oil, herbs, and scallions instead. So even though they may not be traditional, they make a fantastic accompaniment to dinner. They are also great eaten the next day for lunch with a side of tomatoes ...
Peanut Butter Biscuits
2008-04-27 04:14:00
Well, it’s been pretty hectic over here in the DDD household. For the past couple of days, I’ve been slogging away at course prep for a course that deals with diaries and personal journals.  (Did you know, for instance, that  the first online diary, or weblog –today known simply as “blog”–was begun in 1994?  Or that psychiatrists and psychologists often ask their patients to use free association or stream-of-consciousness in journals as a way to dredge up old, repressed conflicts or neuroses?)  Okay–enough- work for now!  Time for a snack break.  Ah, but what to eat?  Hmmm. . . .well, funny, but peanut butter popped into my head. Oh, yeah, baby–peanut butter!  I love it.  It’s creamy, it’s delicious, it’s full of–well, nuts. (Oh.  Hmmm. Is that a bad thing, that I just said “nuts”?  Really, I didn’t mean anything by it. . .sometimes, you know, a peanut is just a peanut.)...
Cheese and Onion Biscuits
2008-04-25 18:27:00
Cheese and onion biscuits are, to me, the perfect accompaniment to cream based soups. I especially like them with potato soup and clam chowder. Marc, being from Massachusetts, is very keen on clam chowder. In fact, it is almost his number one comfort food. I do try to make it often. My recipe ...

Consumers Choose Healthier Snacks in Favour of Biscuits and Cakes
2008-04-15 12:04:00
Consumers seem to be very easily fooled. As soon as ?reduced-fat? appears on a product they seem to fly off the supermarket shelves. In fact: it doesn?t mean you?re being healthy- instead it means increased carbohydrates, and in worse cases- fat-free means increased sugar and chemicals. But this doesn?t stop consumers. A new report shows that, ...

Don’t these little biscuits brings back childhood memory? It does to me. I remember when I was very young (preschooler), each time we go to the grocery store at our housing area (tim zai - that’s what we called it then) I will get my mum to buy these. Just got fascinated with the color ...

The PETA ads are so annoying. But everyone loves Bettie Page, and Jenna Jameson doesnÂ’t look completely horrible in this photo. Actually, JennaÂ’s been looking semi-decent these daysÂ…what happened? ItÂ’s like her fairy godmother flew in and magically un-skankified her! Well, she started the process, anyway. I think she found out when.... Stir the batter as you add the coconut flour and flax so that no lumps are formed and the moisture is distributed evenly. (My First) TWD: Pecan Sour Cream Biscuits
2008-02-26 07:14:00
I am sooooo glad that I joined Tuesdays with Dorie, if only because it was the perfect excuse to purchase my very own copy of Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours. I wasn't expecting such gorgeous tome to arrive in the post, but I was hardly disappointed. I also consider myself a "home baker," and it's wonderful to have a cookbook that is balances the unpretentious style of a home baker with the craft and skill of a professional baker. I am pretty confident that Baking will have become a favorite of mine, by time we've baked our way through the entire book!
Gluten Free Cheddar Garlic Biscuits (A GF Master Mix Recipe)
2008-02-21 15:32:00
Red Lobster used to be one of my all time favorite restaurants. When I was growing up, occasionally during summer break, my parents would take my sister and I to lunch at Red Lobster... I LIVED for those cheddary garlic biscuits that they served. I think could still eat a whole basket if it were placed in front of me. Just the aroma of that buttery, salty, cheesy, garlicky goodness makes my mouth water! We don't visit Red Lobster much anymore, in fact, I can't remember the last time I went... but I still remember those little cheesy biscuits. This recipe is so super easy I'm a little embarrassed to share it! You will LOVE these biscuits. There are infinite varieties on how you could make and serve them. I've served these biscuits with soup, I've made them without garlic to go with breakfast, I've left out the cheese and garlic entirely and added cinnamon and raisins instead... the list is endless! If you miss a good biscuit and are short on time... try this recipe. 2008-02-15 00:06:00
If Wishes Were Dog Biscuitsby Betsy Ann St. AmantBailey Sinclair has only one friend outside of her dog - Luke Pierson. They'd been through everything together?or so she thought. When she discovers her precious black lab, Chevy is missing; Bailey and Luke must weather two storms together ? the one roaring outside, and the one brewing in her heart. When Bailey Sinclair loses her dog, Chevy, she’s devastated. He’s only her second best friend in the world. Luke, who happens to be Bailey’s number one best friend, has spent hours out in the rain and sleet looking for the escape artist mut, to no avail. Bailey and Luke are almost ready to give up and accept the inevitable. But there’s still hope in the form of prayer. And maybe, just maybe this horrible night that they’d both prefer never to repeat, will show them something even more important than their mutual love for the big, slobbery Chevy.Inspired by actual events in the life of the author’s dog, this story is something t...

A North American’s Anzac Biscuits (*or, My Ode to the Antipodes)
2008-02-03 14:34:00
Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve had an ongoing love affair with the antipodes.  Well, come to think of it, that would be a one-sided love affair, since I’ve never actually been there. But hey, that’s okay.  I’m accustomed to those; my entire adolescence was flush with unrequited love. I’ve dreamt of visiting the Land Down Under since I was about 13.  When the Australian Women’s Weekly cookbooks finally made their way across the Atlantic, I was first in line to buy them (favorites include Biscuits and Slices, Vegetarian, and Chocolate titles).  I’ve read The Thorn Birds and Oscar and Lucinda; I dutifully watched the Crocodile Dundee movie and delighted over Babe; I was a devoted fan of the Dame Edna show and ran out to buy the first Crowded House CD to hit our airwaves (though I never became a fan of Kylie Minogue). I adore the whole lot of Australian thespians: Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett, Hugh J...
Holy Bailing Basket Biscuits, Batman!
2008-01-23 21:07:00
I don't think I'm going to be surprising anyone when I say that our team is hurting offensively. This summer, we jettisoned Brett McLean, Antti Laaksonen and Mark Rycroft and replaced them with Ryan Smyth, Jaroslav Hlinka and Wyatt Smith. Even with Smith fizzling, overall it should have been a big improvement to the 4th-ranked offense in the NHL. In the immortal words of Bill Lumbergh..."um, yeah." Through last night's game (a stellar offensive performance resulting in zero goals), the Avalanche are ranked a pedestrian 17th in scoring. Do you want to really blow your mind? We're 14th in the league in goals allowed. That's right, folks, right now our team strengths, statistically, are defense and goaltending. Goals Per Game Chart The above chart shows our cumulative goals per game over the course of the season (the blue line - sorry, forgot to add a legend). The red line is last year. As you can see, we started out on fire for the first six games or so (we had 4 4+ goal games...
Pamper your dog with doggie biscuits
2008-01-21 03:02:00
Here’s a simple recipe for apple cinnamon biscuits to pamper your dog: Ingredients: • 1 package apple, dried  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon –(I usually just shake some in)  • 1 Tablespoon parsley, freeze-dried  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder  • 1 cup ice water  • 1/2 cup Corn Oil  • 5 cups flour  • 1/2 cup powdered milk  • 2 large eggs  • 1 tablespoon corn oil  Instructions: Put the apples in a food processor so that pieces are small. Combine in a bowl all of the ingredients — can add oil or water if dough is too dry. Using a rolling pin roll out dough to about 3/16″ thick (can make thinner or thicker). Using a cookie cutter — cut into shapes — place on cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for approx 20 -25 minutes (until golden). NOTE: if you substitute corn meal just subtract about 3/4 cup from flour and add Corn meal

My Biscuits in the Telegraph
2008-01-12 11:52:00
Back in December I started baking a few things for a local deli named Romeo Jones. They've received a very complimentary write-up in today's Telegraph - I made the "heavenly lemon biscuits" and lemon mascarpone cream that are mentioned!!The inspiration for the biscuits and the cream came from a jar of Claire's Handmade Lemon Curd that the deli gave me. While I would normally make my own lemon curd, I use Claire's for all of the products I make for Romeo Jones. It's very good, and you can either buy it in the deli or on Claire's website.

Biscuits With Bite
2008-01-08 03:17:00
When I look back on the earlier months of this blog I was surprised at how prodigious I was at turning out post after post. There was one month where I posted a whopping 25 entries, which to me now seems unfathomable and seeing as how the number of posts per month have now dwindled to less than half of that record number, I am quite surprised how much free time I had to cook and blog. I guess I am a little more discerning on what I post about and noticed that I do not quite readily post about any old recipe I find on the back of a soup can.Where did all that time for baking and blogging go?I was judging the December DMBLGIT just last week and thought about when the last time I had this much time to just pore over more than 100 photographs. I was sitting there at about photo 31 and thought that this is really fun, just sitting here, all this time on my hands and no pressure to do anything with it.And as I bit into my fourth, no wait fifth cheddar biscuit, I thought this is something ...

The Wonderful World Of Wood Biscuits
2008-01-05 09:52:00
Unlike the common woodworking statement: Good woodworking projects use glue, the truth is that it takes much more than that. One of the most essential tools for excellent work working is wood biscuits. Biscuits are small discs that are oval in shape. Using a biscuit jointer they are inserted into their place. Biscuits of course have not always been around. Before biscuits were used, woodworking used wooden pegs but they serve the same purpose.

Easy desert with lady fingers (boudoirs biscuits)
2007-11-08 00:10:00
if you have people coming round for dinner...and want a simple and easy pudding with no cooking involved, this one is perfect!. The only thing is you need to do it a day in advance. So not one for a last minute gathering, but for that you can try my chocolate and frangipanne tart which takes very little cooking, or even pain perdu, even quicker(just glam it up by serving it with a scoop of very very nice ice cream like Carte dOr caramel et beurre sal, my favourite!). it's called Charlotte, not sure why actually? if you know, please share your knowledge with me, please :)anyway, my mum used to make it quite often with different filling depending on the season. Berries and whipped cream in summer, chocolate mousse and pears and even chestnut pure and whipped cream around Christmas. She even had a special Tupperware dish to make it in, one which made it easy to take the charlotte out of it by liftinga little lid on the top. I use a glass bowl lined with clean film, works the same....
Goodies from Shanghai
2007-10-30 08:33:00
We made such an effort to find this shop on Huaihai Road. I've passed it so many times but somehow only browsed, not willing to buy and sample the goodies inside. Would you believe that I forgot to find out the name of the shop and only found out today from the plastic bags that it is called ChangChunShiPin.It is a few doors away from the H&M flagship store in Shanghai and I believe it is after the Watson store. It sells cooked, baked, preserved, grilled, or smoked items; local, western, or imported; sweet, sour, or spicy; fruits, chocolates, cakes, sweets and meat products. It takes awhile to figure out what things are because everything is in Chinese. There was a long queue of people waiting for their turn to buy cooked vegetables or meat. I guess the Shanghainese pack these and cook their own rice for dinner. We stayed away from the preserved or smoked meat products. We were also not interested in the preserved fruits counter although it is nice to try and guess what type of f...

Halloween Biscuits
2007-10-28 21:20:00
When I was a little girl my Mum made Halloween so much fun. We had very little money so things were tight and we had to make do with what we had. But in actual fact I think we had much more fun because of that. It?s easy to go out and buy or hire a Halloween costume, but to put one together from nothing at home is so much more exciting. Mum used to dress my sister and me up as witches, making dresses from black plastic dustbin sacks which she painted with gold and silver stars. We had matching tall witches hats made from cardboard and more black sacks. Then she?d paint our faces with make-up and off we?d go to join the other children in terrorising the neighbourhood. Everyone said we were the best dressed witches in town! Then there would be the pumpkin carving, apple bobbin and the biscuit making we so looked forward to. Mum would make a huge pile of biscuits to give to the trick and treat-ers and of course we got some too. She?d make up little pots of coloured icing and paint the b...
Two by Two Biscuits
2007-10-16 01:39:00
An elegant update to traditional animal crackers, the adorable Two by Two cookies from Artisan Biscuits are perfect for discerning toddlers and their parents everywhere. The charming shapes of the cookies and package illustrations are inspired by classic pairs from children's literature. Vanilla takes its duo from Edward Lear's poem, "The Owl and The Pussy Cat," and Toffee and Strawberry are based on two of Aesop's Fables, "The Hare and The Tortoise" and "The Lion and The Mouse," respectively. Made by hand in England from organic ingredients, like Madagascan vanilla, pieces of Yorkshire toffee and real strawberry juice, the biscuits contain no hydrogenated oils, additives or preservatives. Available online at iGourmet for $5 and at one of our favorite Brooklyn outposts, Marlow and Sons.
Melanie Chisholm ~ Munching Biscuits For Bigger Boobs & Video For Her N
2007-10-15 12:24:00
Melanie Chisholm is reportedly eating specialist Japanese biscuits in the hope of enlarging her boobs. Melanie is eating the biscuits which have 68.7 calories each, 50mg of the herb Pueraria Mirifica, and contain trans-fats which are sent directly to the breast tissue. Apparently the manufacturers claim that women can expect their breast size to increase by at least one cup size, just by eating two biscuits daily. Mel recently spoke to Radio 1 saying, “I’ll be a guinea-pig for them, can you imagine if my boobs got bigger suddenly? “That’s be so great!” Victoria Beckham is also getting in shape for the Spice Girls upcoming tour. A source said, “Victoria has told the girls her secret to getting in shape is 200 sit-ups a day, and a diet of edamame soya beans, strawberries and lettuce.” “She is determined to make sure the reunion goes well because her image is important to her.” “She wants the girls to all look their very best...

My biscuits are burnin!

Just a general note to everyone --If you don't have a license to drive a school bus, don't assume that you can operate any of the controls on the school bus either. When I had dropped off all of my kids at their buses this afternoon after school let out, I noticed that the driver was not present at the bus I monitor. One of the other monitors was inside the bus watching the kids, but she kept complaining about how hot it was. So I figured why have the kids sitting on a sweltering bus, when I could easily turn on the A/C?So I flipped the knob, and we felt the air coming out of the vents. A couple of minutes later, the driver came back (she had been helping out on another bus), and the bus left.About half an hour later, I passed the driver in the hall, and she informed me that I had actually turned the heater on.D'OH!!!From now on, I'm sticking to my trusty Toyota console...
