Time to end Black History Month? 2012

Well, it?s been at least 48 hours since someone called me a knuckle dragging, Neanderthal NAZI racist. I guess I?m just not trying hard enough. Here is a re-post from last year about Black History Month, I re-post the same article every year.  … Continue reading →
INK BLAST | AFRO-LATINAS TO CELEBRATE DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
2009-02-27 22:05:00
About half way through this month, it hit me that I had not ever considered whether Black Latinos, some of whom prefer to be called Afro-Latinos, are or should be part of the celebration of Black History Month. (Might be because I, myself, am what Dominicans affectionately call jaba [?high-yellow? might be the vernacular translation]. I am, therefore, uniquely unqualified to discuss the nuanced particularities of being Afro anything.) No matter. Despite not having any cultural connoisseurs or hip historians to consult, I decided to add my own small, but meaningful celebration to this auspicious month. Let?s hear it for my Afro-Latina sisters doing their damn thing!

Time to end Black History Month? Should Black History Month itself fade into history? Many have long argued that African-American history should be incorporated into year-round education. Now, claims that Black History Month is outdated are gaining a new potency, as schools diversify their curricula and President Barack Obama’s election opens a new chapter in the nation’s ...

In Honor of Black History Month
2008-03-01 04:04:00
The FOX network, along with 20th Century Fox, is currently developing a spinoff of its enduringly popular Family Guy to revolve around Peter Griffin's bathtub-loving, accident-prone neighbor, Cleveland Brown.According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new animated series, tentatively titled Cleveland, will be coming from the same comic minds that brought Stewie & Co. into the mainstream, with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, former Simpsons writer and American Dad exec producer Rich Appel and Family Guy writer-producer, not to mention the voice of Cleveland himself, Mike Henry, on board to write the new show. Not much is known about Cleveland other than the fact it will revolve around the Brown clan. It's unclear whether the series will remain set in the town of Quahog or whether Cleveland, along with his wife and son, will continue to appear on Family Guy, though as both series are animated, the double-billing won't so much be a logistical problem as a creative decision. As i...

Carter G Woodson, father of Black History Month
2008-02-07 14:30:00
February is Black History Month (if you’re in the UK and reading this, make that October!). West Virginia educator Carter G. Woodson, the son of former slaves, was pivotal in its development. Woodson (1874-1950) was a graduate and later principal of Douglass High School in Huntington, WV, a dean at West Virginia State, and was the second African American to earn Harvard Ph.D. (1912).Dr. Woodson authored numerous scholarly books and magazine articles on the positive contributions of blacks to the development of America. He reached out to schools and the general public through the establishment of several key organizations, and founded Negro History Week (precursor to Black History Month). On September 9, 1915, Woodson and four others organized the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Black History Month Politics And Barack Obama
2008-02-07 00:35:00
February is Black History Month. As I try to speak over your applause, I realize that the normal Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass stories just won't do for me this time. I tend to be a realist, so I need to be able to draw a time line, a time line that I can relate to.I will mention the race riot of 1921 in Tulsa Oklahoma that destroyed the Black Wall Street. But, that's it. It was a travesty with lives lost, businesses and homes destroyed, the usual holocaust that has been woven through the American fiber. Now, I want to tell you what Black History Month really means to me.I grew up in the 60s and 70s, in Detroit. Turbulent times but, these historical times were viewed through the eyes of a child and then a teenager. In 1967 as a 6 year old I can remember living in Delray. Delray was in the southwest part of town, and pretty much away from the inner city. To some, Delray was like living in the country. But for me, I don't recall seeing looters, fires, and police. I reca...

February is Black History Month
2008-02-01 05:20:00
Thousands of years of history cannot be compressed into one blog post. Neither can the complexity of the African Diaspora be represented solely through the experience of Black America.Nevertheless, this blog post is intended to honor the heritage of people of African ancestry, a story that has its roots in the beginning of human civilization, and that continues substantially to impact every aspect of life in the new millennium. In the United States, Dr. Carter G. Woodson is credited with having focused the nation's attention upon recognizing annually the historic contributions that African-Americans have made in this society. This effort - having begun as a week-long observance within academia - has now developed into a month-long annual celebration across a wide mosaic of American subcultures, experienced in an even wider range of expressions. In connection with any European presence, this history dates to a point no later than the Jamestown settlement in 1607, although not necessar...
