Blackhawks and Predators Free Agent Needs
2008-06-30 01:08:00
Blackhawks: There have been rumblings about the Blackhawks' interest in adding pop to the lineup, with a puck-moving defenseman on their shopping list. They could go high, after Brian Campbell, or get a younger, less expensive option like John-Michael Liles. The plan is to continue letting a strong young talent base mature and to supplement it with compatible talent. Predators: Don't expect too

Do Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan need strong playoff performances to remain with the Rangers? Is this the last season for Martin Havlat and Nikolai Khabibulin with the Blackhawks? Does Rob Blake want to play in the NHL past this season? Should Senators buy out Ray Emery? Are the Oilers planning on dealing Joni Pitkanen? Will Geoff Sanderson call it quits? Game 59: Blackhawks 2, Avalanche 1
2008-02-18 15:23:00
Okay, we get it, you won.  Knock it off already. Sad.  That's all I have to say about the Avalanche.  If you want a full recap, check out the AP or ITCS.  I can't bring myself to do one of my own. UPDATE:  Dater's recap at the Post is pretty good, and addresses what most of us here have already noticed before about the Avs' defense. Skrastins, this time, fully withstanding: "We didn't handle the puck a lot."  When they did, Quenneville said, "we made some direct passes from our stick to their stick, with not a lot of pressure." Quenneville was probably thinking of Karlis Skrastins' umpteenth giveaway of the kind he made Sunday on the game-winning goal. Skrastins had the puck with time during a Blackhawks flurry, but instead of a safe clearout or pass to a teammate, he put it right back to the Blackhawks at the point. A few seconds later, the puck was behind Avs goalie Jose Theodore, after Martin Havlat shot it into the right side of the net t...
Game 59: Avalanche At Blackhawks, Preview And Open Thread
2008-02-17 14:23:00
And just like that, the Avalanche are out of the playoffs again.  Vancouver beat Edmonton last night moved up one spot in both the Northwest Division and the Western Conference, one point ahead of Colorado in both. With the Avs barely clinging to their playoff hopes, each game becomes critically important to win.  Yes, you could say each game was a "must-win," if so inclined. Unfortunately for the Avs, they face the Chicago Blackhawks today, who have found it much easier to "Commit To The Indian" since ace rookie Jonathan Toews returned to the lineup last week.  The 'Hawks have won their past two games by outscoring their opponents (Columbus and Nashville) 13-3.  Great. Jose Theodore will return to the net today for the Avs after getting pulled against St. Louis on Thursday.  Joe Sakic and Paul Stastny are both skating now, but won't play in either today's game nor tomorrow's in Detroit.  Ryan Smyth will have to lead the team all by himself. The...

Game 51: Blackhawks At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread
2008-01-30 18:59:00
Let me begin by saying I've always really admired Blackhawks coach Denis Savard.  Not only was he a great player and now a good coach, but he's also a snazzy dresser.  Colorado's Coach Q sometimes looks like he sleeps in his suits, like a presidential candidate or a Japanese office worker.  Not Savard.  He always looks like a million bucks. I'd love to know who his tailor is. But while Savard's sartorial sensibilities have his appearance always in order, his hockey team is another story.  Despite a new sense of purpose in the front office, a good coach and some killer young talent, the 'Hawks are struggling.  They're stuck at .500 in a newly-competitive Central Division and are looking at another year out of the playoffs. Chicago's 1-0 loss to Columbus last Thursday was the last straw for Savard: "Commit to the Indian." That's got to be the quote of the year.  That and "You might get a cut, you might get bruised, so what?"  Sav...

Game 47: Blackhawks 2, Avalanche 1 (SO)
2008-01-19 12:51:00
Now that Sakic, Smyth and Stastny are all out with injuries, I'm almost willing to accept the fact that the Avalanche aren't going to win many more games for a while.  The offense, though deep on paper, is now largely composed of young, inexperienced players who can't be expected to carry an NHL team by themselves. Considering the odds against them, the Avalanche did pretty well against the Chicago Blackhawks, despite losing the game in a shootout, 2-1.  Chicago never had more than eight shots on goal in any period, and Jose Theodore had another strong game, stopping 22 of 23 on the night.  The only goal he allowed during regulation was scored by Calder Trophy favorite Patrick Kane at the 2:31 mark in the first period.  Less than six minutes later, Andrew Brunette evened it up.   The rest of the game was a relatively evenly-matched standoff. Unfortunately for the Avs, Theodore, who normally excels in shootouts, didn't quite have it against the 'Hawks...

Blackhawks ride five-goal third period past Leafs
Game 7: Blackhawks 5, Avalanche 3
2007-10-20 23:00:00
Try as they might, the Avalanche cannot win on offense alone.  In the last two games they have erased multi-goal deficits, but while they were able to squeak by with a win the first time, the second time they couldn't pull it off.  They lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3, despite scoring three goals to tie the game in the third period (box score). The defense again looked fairly lost on the ice throughout the first period, which allowed the Blackhawks to score three quick goals.  The first was one of the prettiest goals I've ever seen, scored by 19 year-old Jonathan Toews.  Also lighting the lamp---for the first time in his NHL career---was Patrick Kane, the first pick overall in the 2007 Entry Draft.   On a side note, the Altitude Sports man-crush marathon added both Toews and Kane to its illustrious roster, which is still currently headed by Dion Phaneuf.  I think somebody should get Mike Haynes and Peter McNab some lotion and a box of Kleenex. B...
Game 7: Avalanche At Blackhawks, Preview and Open Thread
2007-10-19 21:04:00
I could waste a lot of space previewing this game, but instead I'll just break it down into a list of things working for and against the Avalanche when they face the Chicago Blackhawks on the road tonight at the United Center.  This is the first game of a four-game road trip. Working For The Avs: Two-game winning streak Ryan Smyth on a rampage The Youngins (Stastny, Wolski, Svatos) The Blackhawks' defensive weakness Working Against The Avs: Jose Theodore in net 0-2 record on the road so far Inconsistent defense The Youngins (Toews, Kane, Ruutu) This game could really go either way.  On paper, the Avalanche is a much stronger team by far than the 'Hawks, but with their twin road game collapses and Jose "I Can't Believe It's Not Budaj" Theodore getting a totally-undeserved start in net, it's a toss up. I'll be live blogging at least until I can't take it anymore.  The game starts at 7:30 PM Central Time (8:30 Eastern, 6:30 Mountain).   ESPN pre...
