Tale of the Tape: George Bernard Shaw vs. Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw
2012-01-20 13:44:00
George Bernard Shaw is one of the most famous, if not the most famous, artistic critic in world history.  Andrew Shaw, on the other hand, might be one of the greatest men the world has ever known.  Well, at least to Chicago Blackhawks fans.  So, why not compare the Shaws?  Below, is a tale of... Blackhawks skid goes beyond goaltending
2012-01-10 07:06:00
When I talked with Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman on Sunday (I’ll run the interview Tuesday night before and after the game), he made the point that the recent bulge in goals-against is a team issue. Corey Crawford gets the bulk of the criticism, which is understandable because he’s the last line of defense. The... Read more »

Time to retire a Blackhawks tradition
2011-12-31 15:57:00
I’ve been meaning to write this blog for a couple of years now, and I’ve never done it.  Maybe it’s because I participated, in earnest, so many times.  Maybe it’s because when I see the Winged Wheel on the Detroit sweaters, I just want to blurt it out.  Well, not anymore. It’s time to retire... Read more »
Christmas and the Blackhawks
2011-12-25 19:12:00
Since I was a little kid I always had some type of association with Christmas and the Chicago Blackhawks. Obviously the ice in hockey reminds everyone of snow and Winter time, but I also have fond memories of my dad taking me to games the day before or the day after Christmas. I also remember... Pointing a finger: The Blackhawks woes
2011-11-10 06:40:00
Let us all begin the game of pointing fingers at the reasons for the Blackhawks woes as of late. We have identified a great many things on this blog in recent weeks and even long before that. So, are the issues today really any different from a year ago, or maybe even from before the Cup was... Read more »
Canucks 6, Blackhawks 2: What the heck was that?
2011-11-07 06:05:00
If you are going to give up 5 Power-play goals and not score any of your own, you are going to lose by a lot no matter what else you do on the ice. Not that it matteres for the Hawks, they didn’t really do anything 5-on-5 either, which added up to a disgusting excuse... Read more »
Have the Blackhawks uncovered an offensive star?
2011-11-06 17:35:00
With October in the books, the Blackhawks will spend most of November on the road. But looking back at October, one player on the Hawks roster outplayed his expectations in the season’s first month. Consider the following comparison of five Octobers: Season: 1 2 3 4 5 Gms 10 13 10 13 11 G 2... Read more »
A slight reason for Blackhawks' concern
2011-10-03 14:37:00
It is really hard to get too concerned about what goes down in preseason play. When all is said and done, it really doesn’t matter, and yet I can’t help but feel off about what has transpired thus far at the end of preseason play. Namely, the Hawks slop-fest in their own zone, coupled with the apparent... Read more »
Blackhawks goalie question: Is a veteran necessary?
2011-10-02 06:53:00
There are a lot of people in Chicago that are ready to buy the gas that send rookie netminder Alexander Salak to Rockford. In the eyes of the masses, the Hawks must have a veteran to back up Corey Crawford this season, or they’re taking a huge, avoidable risk. The perception that the Blackhawks will... Read more »

Looking back 2 years into the Blackhawks franchise we see many things to be happy about. A Cup winning squad, olympic medals galore, and other misc trophies around every corner. Blackhawks sign Sami Lepisto: What's the roster impact?
2011-07-16 10:58:00
It was announced hours before the Blackhawks Convention opens that the team had reached an agreement with free agent defenseman Sami Lepisto on a one-year deal. What does this mean to the blue line for the Hawks this year? Let’s take a look. First, the Hawks now have seven defensemen on their NHL roster without...

Blackhawks trade Kopecky's rights to Florida, qualify three
2011-06-28 01:24:00
Stan Bowman and Dale Tallon must be besties.  For the third time in the last two seasons, the Blackhawks have made a trade with the Florida Panthers. The Blackhawks traded the negotiating rights to Tomas Kopecky to Tallon and the Panthers for a conditional 7th round draft pick.  The Blackhawks were going to let Kopecky walk July 1st, so this trade is a no brainer.  The Panthers want Kopecky, and found it worth the 7th rounder to have exclusive negotiating rights until Friday.  In other news, the Blackhawks qualified three of their four restricted free agents.  Receiving offers were Viktor Stalberg, Chris Campoli, and Michael Frolik.  It's expected that all three will sign the offers and return to the club.  Jake...

Chicago Blackhawks Steal the Show at The Draft Two Huge Trades
2011-06-25 14:15:00
Stan Bowman And the Chicago Blackhawks came to St. Paul, MN on a mission. Yes draft a couple of young hockey players, but they also wanted to shed so cap space. Mission accomplished. The Blackhawks spent the whole day shopping around forward Troy Brouwer, and finally the Washington Capitals agreed. In exchange for Brouwer the Blackhawks received the 26th pick on the night.Defenseman Brian Campbell who had a cap hit of over $7 million had been first on Bowman's list. Campbell had been asked to waive his painful "no trade" clause all night. First for the Florida Panthers; to which he refused. The Blackhawks then stuck up a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Brian Campbell refused again. Eventually Campbell...
Reports : Blackhawks Trade Brian Campbell to Panthers
2011-06-25 04:39:00
Numerous NHL outlets are reporting that Brian Campbell has waived his no trade contact to accept a trade to the Florida Panthers.  Earlier Friday, rumors had flown that Campbell had been traded to Columbus, but it fell through. This trade appears to be the real deal.In his 215 games with the Blackhawks, Campbell recorded 19 goals and 117 points, with a +51 rating.  His talent has never been in question, but the contract former Blackhawk's and current Florida Panthers' GM Dale Tallon signed him to was far too much for a player of his ability.  His offensive numbers were decent, but he was too often a defensive liability.  The salary relief will help the Blackhawks resign Patrick Sharp, who is...

Alexander Salak, Chicago Blackhawks Agree on Two-Year Deal
2011-05-20 21:05:00
According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the Chicago Blackhawks have signed restricted free agent goalie Alexander Salak to a two-year, one-way contract with a $600k annual cap number. This news comes one day after the Blackhawks announced a three-year extension with starter Corey Crawford; the Hawks now have $3.27M in cap space committed to two young goalies for the coming season. If we include Ben Smith, Marcus Kruger & John Scott in the Blackhawks salary cap total for 2011-12, they are now committed to $54,281,337 to 16 players. A conservative estimate of $62M for next year's cap means the Hawks have over $7M to sign 3 fwds & a 5/6 d-man. Salak, 24, played for Färjestad BK of the Swedish...

Blackhawks Get It Right And Re-Sign Crawford
2011-05-19 22:18:00
The magic of the Stanley Cup season of 2009-10 is long gone with the Blackhawks having been disposed of in the first round of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.Though many players were forced to leave town after the Hawks championship season, one of the hardest to departures to swallow was that of goaltender Anti Niemi.  Niemi, one of the heroes from the Hawks' Stanley Cup run was unable to come to terms with Chicago in the offseason, and wound up being signed by Western Conference rivals, the San Jose Sharks.  In an effort to replace Niemi, the Blackhawks signed veteran goaltender Marty Turco from the Dallas Stars.  Much like 2009-10, the 2010-11 season featured the demise of a starting goaltender....

Top Ten Reasons Why the Blackhawks Will Win Game 7
2011-04-26 06:02:00
When the Vancouver Canucks won the first three games against our Chicago Blackhawks, I hoped for one thing and one thing only. No sweep. The Hawks not only acquiesced to my meager demand, but they also won games five and six to push this series to an epic Game 7 tonight. Despite nearly abandoning all hope for a comeback, I'm convinced the Hawks will pull off the unthinkable and become only the fourth NHL team to come back from a 3-0 deficit and win this series. Here are the Top Ten Reasons Why the Blackhawks will win Game 7. ...
Blackhawks Lose Bryan Bickell for 3 Weeks
2011-04-26 00:35:00
Reports originating with XM Home Ice on Twitter indicate that the Blackhawks have lost forward Bryan Bickell for roughly three weeks after he required surgery to repair two tendons in his wrist. This news comes as a blow to a team that was rolling, and the best line for the Hawks in Game Six was Bickell with Michael Frolik and Dave Bolland. Tomas Kopecky, who has been out most of the series, did travel with the team to Vancouver....
Blackhawks in great position to advance on mentally weak Canucks
2011-04-25 18:43:00
I'm guilty, you're guilty.  We are all guilty.  We gave up on the Hawks after 3 games, because we thought the players gave up after game 82.  We were wrong, and here we are...game seven in Vancouver.    At this point, how can the Blackhawks lose?  The Vancouver Canucks are everything they'd proven to be in the last two playoff series' they had against the Hawks.   They're mentally soft.  They play dirty when things aren't going their way.  The Hawks are in Roberto Luongo's head...so much so that he hid in the dressing room until Michael Frolik de-jocked Corey Schneider on a penalty shot, injuring his leg.  Luongo wanted no part of the Blackhawks last night.  His teammates are likely...

Dave Bolland Returns, Blackhawks Blow Canucks Out of Chicago
2011-04-20 05:26:00
Let's not waste time with the box score. Kevin Bieksa should have received aninstigator penalty for jumping Viktor Stalberg in the final five minutes of the game. And Raffi Torres, who the NHL decided didn't need to be suspended again, got kicked out and was hit with 10 penalty minutes. Torres went out of his way to make it obvious what a failure it was by the league office to not suspend him by taking every shot he could. But beyond the (expected) cheap shots, Tuesday night's game was a clear example of what happens when a champion gets backed into a corner. And they have John Scott waiting....
