Blacksburg: Let the Healing NOT Begin!
2007-04-17 21:12:00 By Gary Corseri4/17/07When I had cable, I found myself using CNN as a kind of background music, deluding myself that I could tune out the nonsense and tune in when something important came up, and thus. I thought, I was staying ?informed.?But after a while I realized that I was not informed; I was simply distracted by side-show stories, and lulled by the repetitiveness of dull reporting. I also found that, like a junkie, I needed a bigger and bigger ?fix? to keep me going, to excite me, to make me feel connected to the bigger world. But a couple of years ago, I gave up cable and reclaimed a morsel of my sanity. Thus, I got the news about the slaughter at Virginia Tech little by little during the day, gauging the progress of the unfolding tragedy with a picture here, a sound byte there?much as we gauge the progress and lack thereof in Iraq. The first thing I heard was Ed Schultz, a ?progressive? talk-radio jock who was arguing with one of his call-in listeners that this was an ?isola...
Bad Day at Blacksburg Made Worse By the Media
2007-04-17 01:26:00 In light of a tragedy where at least 31 persons were murdered on Virginia Tech’s campus, it is understandable that everyone is anxious to know what happened. Likewise, it is understandable that there’s an onslaught of reporters laying down a barrage of question to the school president and the chief of campus police.Watching the earlier press conference, there seems to be a frenzy of questions regarding a lock down, almost to the point of being accusatory. However, how easy is it to lock down an open campus. President Steger reminded the group that the school has 26,000 students and 9,000 students on campus at any time. The difficulty in notifying every student to stay away or to stay put is daunting to say the least. The contrast between locking down an entire college campus versus locking down individual buildings , as would be the case with public schools, is not something that should be overlooked. After the fact, it is easy to point fingers to say, "why didn’t you do this"...
Tragedy in Blacksburg, VA
2007-04-16 23:50:00 It's not Redskins related though I believe tragedies of this level affect all of us and deserve mention for comment and reflection. ABC News has the story: At least 32 people are dead in what may be the biggest mass shooting in modern American history -- and the death toll may rise. Although we all hope it doesn't. The shooting occurred on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, VA, just 250 miles outside of Washington D.C. Though the death toll has fluctuated, at least 20 (though likely more) were pronounced, making this the deadliest shooting on a US campus in history. Thoughts and condolences are with the victims and their families. As has been stated more eloquently elsewhere, the shooting is tragic and senseless and totally avoidable. I have very little patience for this brand of gross, unfortunate and unnecessary crazy that leads to lost lives. Again, my thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with the victims and their families and all affected.

Shooting in Blacksburg
2007-04-16 19:52:00 Be sure and throw up a good word for the families of the victims of today's shooting at Virginia Tech University. Katherine Coble I believe says it best when she blames the "rabidity of the soul." I agree.
