No LAN Multiplayer in Blizzard Startcraft 2
2009-07-02 14:23:00
Blizzard senior VP Rob Pardo has confirmed that the company’s upcoming RTS sequel StarCraft II will not feature LAN multiplayer support. The only multiplayer available will be on Battle.net. IncGamers also got a clarification from Blizzard, shortly after the interview, saying the choice of excluding a LAN feature “is because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net,” a topic they will reveal more about at a later date. The original StarCraft gained popularity largely because of the easy LAN mode, used on massive LANs like Dreamhack or small personal networks between friends, so this is a surprising move by Blizzard. Personally, I’m really surprised by the news. What year are we already in, Mr Blizzard? Multiplayer LAN capability has always been an out-of-the-box feature and I can assure you that any game who dares goes into the market without it is just asking for failure. StarCraft II - No LAN capabilities?
2009-06-30 16:29:00
Apparently, there has been a lot of StarCraft II news floating around on the web for the past day or two. So I started trawling through the different titbits until I found this interview by IncGamers, where they are speaking to Rob Pardo and other designers behind the new game in the StarCraft franchise.  read more &raqu-o;

February 6, 1978 ? The Blizzard of 1978

On this day in engineering history, the northeastern U.S. was buried by the Blizzard of 1978. The winter storm dumped as much as 55 inches of snow in some areas, battering swaths of New England and New York with hurricane-force winds and eerie blasts of thunder and lightning. Connecticut, Rhod

November proved to be another good month with both overall and software sales up 10% and 11% respectively."However looking at the stock of industry leader Electronics Arts, which has lost more than 70% since the start of this year, this hardly seems to be case. DRM - What is it good for?
2008-11-19 05:42:00
If you're a gamer, you might know at least a little bit about Digital Rights Management. At the very least you might have heard of it. Digital Rights Management or DRM as it is more commonly known, is a digital (software or hardware) method for publishers and developers to try and protect their product from being copied or distributed illegally. DRM can be found in many forms and can be used to protect digital content like software applications and downloaded MP3 files.  read more &raqu-o;

Blizzard games anyone?
2008-10-14 21:22:00
So with Blizzcon that came to an end this weekend, there is quite a bit of news to disseminate. Living in South Africa (with regards to low bandwidth speeds, etc) means not being that excited about Blizzard's super popular MMORPG game, World of Warcraft or it's upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. I acknowledge the fact that the game is considered as history in the making with regards to it's success as one of the first great games to truly capture the MMORPG market. Fact of the matter is, I still don't have the time (or the bandwidth) to truly enjoy it. So this post will be about the two games that I can (and most probably will) enjoy, when they are finally released. StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3.  read more &raqu-o;

Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld
2008-06-04 21:58:00
A mother gives life so her newborn may take it away in this bloody tale of retribution for a wronged woman. I know that there will be people out there for whom this particular bandwagon must be a real bone of contention. The aftermath of the Kill Bill furore has brought some little known films to the fore, Lady Snowblood being now the most infamous. The cries of hijacking are practically audible from those whose film collections already proudly contained this particular and previously lesser known tale of revenge. However, if there is goodness to come from all the hype it must surely be that our lady of vengeance has found a wider audience. I’m not really one for bandwagons myself, that’s a ride too cramped for my tastes, but on this occasion it called right passed my door so I thought this time I’d hitch a lift, and what a ride it turned out to be. Blizzard from the Netherworld is Meiko Kaji’s first outing as Yuki, the child born to avenge her imprisoned mot...

An official denial from Blizzard has put an end to the recent rumors surrounding the supposed system requirements for StarCraft 2. Blizzard nears $300 million revenue last quarter
2008-05-15 06:01:00
According to Kotaku Vivendi Games, via its child company, Blizzard Entertainment and Blizzard's highly lucrative World of Warcraft franchise, made around $340 million in revenue last quarter. Most of that came from Blizzard alone, the developer providing an impressive $295 million to Vivendi's games division, with a good portion of that cash coming from the MMO's 10.7 million subscriber base. Vivendi aims to have another banner year with the release of the highly anticipated Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack to World of Warcraft in the second half of 2008.

Blizzard vs Cheaters which side are you on?
2008-05-09 00:00:00
Blizzard has filed a suit against MDY, the company that makes Glider. MDY then sued to establish its right to sell their software, their bot software. I have a passionate hate for cheaters in any game, but especially Blizzard games since they are my favorite game publisher and produce eSport ready games. Games that require a balanced competitive scene. Ever since Map hackers showed up in Starcraft and hearing the community uproar, Blizzard has been working hard to curb cheating. Now some may argue that Blizzard suing this company is making copyright laws more stricter and imposing. However I see that as a necessary evil vs the cheaters & developers making cheating tools. Quote from the source article: “The question is, how is installing a third-party tool copyright infringement if it doesn’t use Blizzard’s code? This is where things get dicey. In a filing, Blizzard quotes a section from its EULA that says that “All connections to the Game and/or...

Blizzard launches new online store
2008-05-04 01:27:00
The new and improved Blizzard store opened recently, and it's definitely worth a look. It has a very clean layout, making finding what you want pretty simple.They carry everything from the Blizzard games to the Warcraft action figures to WoW game time. Their apparel selection isn't very large due to that primarily being handled by Jinx, but the store is still worthwhile.Plus, registering for the Blizzard store comes with another perk. You can register for the Beta Test lottery, which is a chance at being chosen for upcoming beta phases of various games. Wrath? Starcraft II perhaps? All of the above? Who knows! I've been considering getting into the WoW TCG, so if I get a shot at a beta test out of it, too... hey, why not?Edit: The Blizzard EU store is not yet live, but I imagine it will be soon. Sorry, Europe!

Blizzard Acquires Diablo3.com
2008-05-02 00:45:00
In a move sure to generate reams of speculation from Diablo fans the world over, the former owner of Diablo3.com just revealed that the domain has been handed over to Blizzard on request. It seems that Blizzard contacted the site's management a few months back asking for use of the domain, and, being a loyal fan of Blizzard's series, the webmaster handed it over to Blizzard completely gratis. While it's not uncommon for corporations of all kinds to snap up domains even tangentially related to their products, it's almost too easy to see this move as a strategic step laying the groundwork for the eventual release of a third Diablo game.Let's not forget that it's been almost eight years since the last full Diablo title -- that's a long wait for a sequel, even by Blizzard's notoriously meticulous standards. Financially, another Diablo game seems almost predestined. Both Diablo, Diablo II and their sequels are among the best-selling PC games of all time and short o...

Blizzard asks: Have Arena wait times improved?
2008-04-22 21:53:00
Back in February, Bornakk promised Arena queue improvements in Patch 2.4. Now that 2.4 has been here for a few weeks, Drysc is asking for feedback on the wait times. According to Drysc, Blizzard has been making changes continually since releasing 2.4 in order reduce the wait times. He asks that you leave feedback in his post on the forums if you have played in the Arena within the last week.Reading through, the feedback is all positive. Well, mostly. Poe jokes that the queue times are too quick now and would like a couple minutes to do a round of mining in Nagrand. Otherwise, everyone agrees that the queue times are now just a few seconds as opposed to several minutes. The only real negative comments are about how they would like Blizzard to crack down on Win Trading.I am happy that Blizzard is soliciting feedback to find out what is really happening in the game. Do you think the Arena wait times have decreased?

Great post about Blizzard innovations
2008-04-07 17:17:00
Blizzard Entertainment, the envy of the computer game industry, has learned 11 lessons on innovation that can help almost any business.Irvine-based Blizzard used these innovation methods not only to create the world’s most popular massively multi-player online game, World of Warcraft, but also to keep the game fresh and challenging for more than 10 million players.Because many of those customers pay $15 a month to continue playing, Blizzard’s ongoing creative achievement is worth more than $1 billion a year in revenues, not counting the multi-millions it tallies from its other games, such as StarCraft, Diablo II and Warcraft III, plus trading cards, comic books, etc.This combination of creativity and profitability is much of the reason for the upcoming merger of game company Activision with Blizzard’s parent company, Vivendi Games. The new company, to be called Activision Blizzard, will be valued at about $18.9 billion. (link)
Stealing Blizzard?s domain names? not worth it

Starfeeder Proudly Presents—Starcraft: Tychus Chronicles. Blizzard partnered with Konami and announces a great new console game, Starcraft: Tychus Chronicles. We review the beta, which as of today already looks very promising. NOTE: Beware of spoilers! Starcraft: Tychus Chronicles, which is a Starcraft 2 Prequel, explores the 4-year period after Starcraft 1 just before Starcraft 2. The story revolves around Tychus as he investigates the meteor that fell on Aiur that unleashed the Zerg Swarm. He found many surprising revelations we need to see to better understand several concepts Blizzard introduced in the PC game under development, Starcraft 2. Tychus Findlay is a new cast member in Starcraft 2, which is currently under alpha and is estimated by GameStop to be released on December 2008. Starcraft: Tychus Chronicles, might be released August 2008. For starters, Tychus Findlay battles Infested Protoss and Terran Renegades that protect the secret lairs of the Zerg Swarm...
