Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld
2008-06-04 21:58:00 A mother gives life so her newborn may take it away in this bloody tale of retribution for a wronged woman. I know that there will be people out there for whom this particular bandwagon must be a real bone of contention. The aftermath of the Kill Bill furore has brought some little known films to the fore, Lady Snowblood being now the most infamous. The cries of hijacking are practically audible from those whose film collections already proudly contained this particular and previously lesser known tale of revenge. However, if there is goodness to come from all the hype it must surely be that our lady of vengeance has found a wider audience. I’m not really one for bandwagons myself, that’s a ride too cramped for my tastes, but on this occasion it called right passed my door so I thought this time I’d hitch a lift, and what a ride it turned out to be. Blizzard from the Netherworld is Meiko Kaji’s first outing as Yuki, the child born to avenge her imprisoned mot...

Official StarCraft 2 Requirements Officially Denied
2008-05-27 23:02:00 An official denial from Blizzard has put an end to the recent rumors surrounding the supposed system requirements for StarCraft 2. Despite the fact the requirements were published in a respectable, well circulated Spanish magazine, they were nothing but fictional. So the following: Is nothing but a guess, probably based on the the configuration of the PCs that ...
Blizzard nears $300 million revenue last quarter
2008-05-15 06:01:00 According to Kotaku Vivendi Games, via its child company, Blizzard Entertainment and Blizzard's highly lucrative World of Warcraft franchise, made around $340 million in revenue last quarter. Most of that came from Blizzard alone, the developer providing an impressive $295 million to Vivendi's games division, with a good portion of that cash coming from the MMO's 10.7 million subscriber base. Vivendi aims to have another banner year with the release of the highly anticipated Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack to World of Warcraft in the second half of 2008.

Blizzard vs Cheaters which side are you on?
2008-05-09 00:00:00 Blizzard has filed a suit against MDY, the company that makes Glider. MDY then sued to establish its right to sell their software, their bot software. I have a passionate hate for cheaters in any game, but especially Blizzard games since they are my favorite game publisher and produce eSport ready games. Games that require a balanced competitive scene. Ever since Map hackers showed up in Starcraft and hearing the community uproar, Blizzard has been working hard to curb cheating. Now some may argue that Blizzard suing this company is making copyright laws more stricter and imposing. However I see that as a necessary evil vs the cheaters & developers making cheating tools. Quote from the source article: “The question is, how is installing a third-party tool copyright infringement if it doesn’t use Blizzard’s code? This is where things get dicey. In a filing, Blizzard quotes a section from its EULA that says that “All connections to the Game and/or...

Blizzard launches new online store
2008-05-04 01:27:00 The new and improved Blizzard store opened recently, and it's definitely worth a look. It has a very clean layout, making finding what you want pretty simple. They carry everything from the Blizzard games to the Warcraft action figures to WoW game time. Their apparel selection isn't very large due to that primarily being handled by Jinx, but the store is still worthwhile.Plus, registering for the Blizzard store comes with another perk. You can register for the Beta Test lottery, which is a chance at being chosen for upcoming beta phases of various games. Wrath? Starcraft II perhaps? All of the above? Who knows! I've been considering getting into the WoW TCG, so if I get a shot at a beta test out of it, too... hey, why not?Edit: The Blizzard EU store is not yet live, but I imagine it will be soon. Sorry, Europe!

Blizzard Acquires Diablo3.com
2008-05-02 00:45:00 In a move sure to generate reams of speculation from Diablo fans the world over, the former owner of Diablo3.com just revealed that the domain has been handed over to Blizzard on request. It seems that Blizzard contacted the site's management a few months back asking for use of the domain, and, being a loyal fan of Blizzard's series, the webmaster handed it over to Blizzard completely gratis. While it's not uncommon for corporations of all kinds to snap up domains even tangentially related to their products, it's almost too easy to see this move as a strategic step laying the groundwork for the eventual release of a third Diablo game.Let's not forget that it's been almost eight years since the last full Diablo title -- that's a long wait for a sequel, even by Blizzard's notoriously meticulous standards. Financially, another Diablo game seems almost predestined. Both Diablo, Diablo II and their sequels are among the best-selling PC games of all time and short o...

Blizzard launches an online store

Blizzard asks: Have Arena wait times improved?
2008-04-22 21:53:00 Back in February, Bornakk promised Arena queue improvements in Patch 2.4. Now that 2.4 has been here for a few weeks, Drysc is asking for feedback on the wait times. According to Drysc, Blizzard has been making changes continually since releasing 2.4 in order reduce the wait times. He asks that you leave feedback in his post on the forums if you have played in the Arena within the last week.Reading through, the feedback is all positive. Well, mostly. Poe jokes that the queue times are too quick now and would like a couple minutes to do a round of mining in Nagrand. Otherwise, everyone agrees that the queue times are now just a few seconds as opposed to several minutes. The only real negative comments are about how they would like Blizzard to crack down on Win Trading.I am happy that Blizzard is soliciting feedback to find out what is really happening in the game. Do you think the Arena wait times have decreased?

Great post about Blizzard innovations
2008-04-07 17:17:00 Blizzard Entertainment, the envy of the computer game industry, has learned 11 lessons on innovation that can help almost any business.Irvine-based Blizzard used these innovation methods not only to create the world’s most popular massively multi-player online game, World of Warcraft, but also to keep the game fresh and challenging for more than 10 million players.Because many of those customers pay $15 a month to continue playing, Blizzard’s ongoing creative achievement is worth more than $1 billion a year in revenues, not counting the multi-millions it tallies from its other games, such as StarCraft, Diablo II and Warcraft III, plus trading cards, comic books, etc. This combination of creativity and profitability is much of the reason for the upcoming merger of game company Activision with Blizzard’s parent company, Vivendi Games. The new company, to be called Activision Blizzard, will be valued at about $18.9 billion. (link)

We review the beta, which as of today already looks very promising. NOTE: Beware of spoilers! The story revolves around Tychus as he investigates the meteor that fell on Aiur that unleashed the Zerg Swarm. He found many surprising revelations we need to see to better understand several concepts Blizzard introduced in the PC game under development, Starcraft 2. WoW Bot Author Earned $2.8M Claims Blizzard
2008-03-29 22:05:00 GamePolitics reports that Blizzard is claiming that World of Warcraft bot author Michael Donnelly has made a cool $2.8 million by selling his Glider software. This comes from recent motions filed in court. Glider is a downloadable software that automatically plays the game for the user, letting players go up to level 70 without much personal effort. Donnelly, its author, was sued by Blizzard in February 2007 and both sides have been locked in a legal battle since then. ?Blizzard?s designs expectations are frustrated, and resources are allocated unevenly, when bots are introduced into the WoW universe, because bots spend far more time in-game than an ordinary player would and consume resources the entire time,? said the company in a legal statement. Interestingly, Donnelly claims that his program does not violate Blizzard?s copyright because it never makes a true copy of the game client. The software currently sells for $25, with an optional $5 subscription offering additional features.

Blizzard to Sue Creator of MMO Glider Bot
2008-03-27 08:04:00 Blizzard are taking legal action against the creator of a program that they claim infringes the company's copyright. Michael Donnelly, the programmer in question, created MMO Glider, a program which can automatically control some of a WoW character's key actions, including combat. Donnelly has sold over 100,000 copies of the bot, and Blizzard are demanding that he stop selling Glider and return all profits that he made from the sales. Donnelly disputes the claim, saying his program doesn't infringe Blizzard's copyright. In Blizzard's legal submission to the court last week, the firm said: "Blizzard's designs expectations are frustrated, and resources are allocated unevenly, when bots are introduced into the WoW universe, because bots spend far more time in-game than an ordinary player would and consume resources the entire time." In this letter, I?d like to share with you all exactly how and why this decision was made. We are well aware that many of you will not take this decision lightly, especially considering the bitter aftertaste of StarCraft Ghost, and the disproportional resources dedicated to the WarCraft franchise. Prior to making this decision, I have personally sat down with Sales and Marketing, QA personnel, developers and artists, progamers and a few community managers. None have provided an answer which could support a different decision. Not a single person was able to justify StarCraft...

Columbus gets 20 Inches of Snow — And I Show Homes During a Blizzard
2008-03-10 20:39:00 I often tell people moving to Columbus that it rarely snows here. And when it does, it doesn’t snow very much but Columbusites still freak out and the News still sensationalizes what snow we did get. Well, according to official measurements at the Airport, we got 20 inches of snow Friday and Saturday — the biggest snowfall ever in Central Ohio. Ever. I had a buyer-couple coming in From Houston this weekend. This is the weekend they HAD to put an offer on something. They had been here another weekend a few weeks back but that was when we thought Husband’s company was going to purchase their Houston home and we were looking at completely different homes than we did this time. We saw about 20 homes Friday and Sunday during snow, sleet and ice pellets falling from the sky. The vacant homes were the worst since no one had bothered to shovel a path to their doors, we had to guess a...

Nivel 22Voodoo Extreme

How Blizzard intends to support SC2 as an eSport
2008-02-26 00:00:00 Blizzard has it’s sights set on making the predecessor to Starcraft the ultimate RTS eSport, Rob Pardo explains more during the 2008 Game Developers Conference… Blizzard’s VP of game design, Rob Pardo, talks during the Game Developers Conference in San Fran about Blizzards new approach to Multiplayer & Massive Multiplayer games. Blizzard Multiplayer Balance - Switch Players Around!
2008-02-22 04:49:00 I picked this up when adding a news item for StarCraft: IncGamers, it is a snip from Game Developers Convention that is taking place right now. One lesson that Rob shared that we've heard from numerous designers in the past is that, when a particular unit or strategy seems underpowered, you want to overcorrect it and make it more powerful than you think it should be. That way, you'll actually encourage players to try the new units and strategies and you'll have a better sense of where the true balance should be. What this amazing revelation actually means is that my friend Wuushu was right on with his theories of Blizzard Class Design. They simply let a few classes be overpowered at a time, so people are interested and try them out, then nerfing them and the circle continues. What a devious plan indeed! Still, if you look at it, the system could be fair enough, no class is usually overpowered against ALL other classes, just enough to be "ez mode" enough to draw p...
