Dad?s Out Of Town ? Everybody Meltdown?

Three. More. Hours. Can I survive three more hours? I’m not at all certain at this point. Ken left on a week-long business trip at ‘0-dark-thirty on Monday morning. His flight gets back in sometime around midnight tonight. That is, if it doesn’t get delayed again. I feel like such ...
What Will They Remember?

My childhood was idyllic in nearly every sense of the word. So much so, that I often lament the possibility that my own children may fail to possess one quite as grand. In fact, after losing much of last week to the confines of the couch with a dreadful cold, there were moments where I became quite convinced that my children were doomed to spend their adulthood reflecting on childhood memories of a grumpy sniffling excuse for a mom and of unparalleled boredom. (Ok, perhaps I was feeling a tad sorry for myself).I can think a million memories of my own childhood that make me smile, that make me laugh: Memories of mornings with Dad getting ready to go to work and how he often let me play with a great poofy handful of shaving foam as he shaved. Of blanket forts and wonderful books with Mom. Of pretending to be asleep after a long car ride home so Dad would carry me inside even though I'm now certain he knew I was really awake. Of downstream swims with Mom on hot summer days in t...
Let Them Eat Bologna

102. Not a number I function well at when applied to average body temperature. I have finally managed to scavenge the remnants of my over-nuked brain through unsupervised (and in all likelihood, completely irrational and quite possibly even toxic) doses of tylenol and iburofen. At the moment, I am percolating at a slightly addled 101.1... The most clear-headed I have been all day. Might as well type a post since I most definitely do not feel like doing anything about the load of laundry that has been sitting in the washer since Saturday evening. I probably have strep throat, although at this point I have avoided any attempt at medically confirming that diagnosis. The thought of carting my little entourage with me to a doctor appointment is enough to push me past the boundaries of anything remotely resembling a rational cognitive state. I'm walking a fine line here as it is.All things considered, I think I did OK for the day. The kids are still breathing. The house didn't b...
Tears and an IV Pole
2007-08-16 23:38:00
To new visitors, my apologies. This blog is typically much more humorous and upbeat - chalk it up to my recent melancholy mood. I'll eventually snap out of it, just stick around.December 2002Yesterday was a big day around here. For the first time since my daughter was two weeks old, there was no IV pole stationed next to her bed. Since Jacqui has finally been eating so well on her own, we no longer have to rent a feeding pump and IV pole from her home health supplier (For those of you new to this site, you can click on the Jacqui's Story button in the menu bar above).Tuesday evening after dinner, I went to Jacqui's room and began boxing up the pump and wiping down the IV pole, preparing it for return the following morning. As I polished away with my bottle of Windex and disinfectant, I inexplicably found myself in tears. Ken peeked in with Kyle over one shoulder. "What's wrong?" He asked, with a puzzled look on his face.I looked up with a wan smile. "I have absolutely no idea."H...
Cloudy Days Ahead for the Sunshine Girl

Well, here we go again. Jacqui crumped on us today just before lunch. Another round of CVS (cyclic vomiting syndrome) symptoms. We were trying to think of what could have triggered this episode and Ken asked her if she had eaten anything she shouldn't. "Ummmm... Maybe," She replied."Like what?" Ken asked."Maybe some crackers.""What kind of crackers?""Square ones.""How many?""Maybe a lot."Come to find out, the little stinker snarfed down at least one packet of chocolate graham crackers last weekend when we were visiting grandparents. We were camping out at my parents farm for a star gazing party complete with campfire and s'mores. Apparently, she sneaked out of the tent when everyone was sleeping and helped herself to the leftover graham crackers. I had made gluten free ones for her so she could have s'mores too, but did she get into those? Of course not.So... There goes the last two weeks of August I guess. I so wish she hadn't gotten sick, but I hope she remembers next...

Sick Day

Today was not fun. Tomorrow will not likely be either. Many of you who visit this site know that Jacqui has some feeding complications, one of those complications being a diagnosis of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS). CVS symptoms mean different things in different people, but with Jacqui, it means that she goes from being bright, sunny and energetic to very near catatonic. Like the flip of a switch. When she was really little, she used to have a week-long episode every other week. Most people with CVS have prolonged episodes of nausea and vomiting. Jacqui cannot throw up because of a procedure she had to have at 18 months old called a Nissen Fundalplication. Jacqui just curls into a ball and suffers.Things with Jacqui's CVS symptoms have been well controlled since learning at age three that wheat (gluten), dairy (casein), and feeding volume are the main triggers to her CVS symptoms. We can control those things. However, exposure to stomach flu symptoms is something that w...
