2009-08-05 17:58:00
Steve Martin: Writer. Comedian. Banjo player.Yes, the funnyman, best known for films like "The Jerk," "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" and "Father of the Bride," is also a bluegrass musician. He'll prove it while performing with the Steep Canyon Rangers Oct. 22 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, concert promoter Jam! announced today. The band is touring in support of the new disc "The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo," which is currently atop the Billboard Bluegrass Album Chart. (But, uh, you already knew that, right?) No ticket price or on sale date yet from Jam!.Would you want to see Steve Martin doing bluegrass? Or would you only pay to see him make you laugh?...

There are many great musicians, some have gold and platinum records on their walls, some are household names, but few are credited with being the father of an entire genre of music. Meet Bill Monroe, he is universally lauded as the master of the Bluegrass genre. Bill died in 1996 but his legacy lives on. This ...

North Branch Bluegrass Festival
2008-05-09 13:45:00
Yay!! A new bluegrass event in Vermont! And one that is traditional bluegrass, not just a bunch of kids experimenting with bluegrass sounds. I am not saying I don't appreciate that as well, but there is something about watching more seasoned folks play from tradition in the back of a local farmer's barn that just twangs at your soul and makes you want to dance without your shoes and keep an eye out for moonshine.Promising "nine hours of quality music," Bridgewater Corner couple, Randy and Heather Kennedy, are holding the First Annual North Branch Bluegrass Festival on Bud Jenne's Fields in Bridgewater Corners. How can you not love how that sounds??? The festival is happening, rain or shine, on Saturday, June 21st. No camping this year, but maybe in years to come, no dogs either which is good because it can be a pain in the arse when everyone brings their dogs. The event is family friendly and workshops will be offered throughout the festival. People are encouraged to brin...

Catherine Britt - Little Wildflower Catherine Britt released her third album, Little Wildflower, in her native Australia. Rhonda Vincent Notches Another Entertainer of the Year Win at Bluegrass Awa

Rhonda Vincent has won Entertainer of the Year at the Bluegrass Awards every year since 2002 and this year was no different. Check out Edward Morris’ recap of the evening. Album Review: Rhonda Vincent - Good Thing Going
2008-01-09 04:15:00
Rhonda Vincent has recorded excellent albums in both the bluegrass and country genres and infuses her bluegrass work with country elements. Her tendency to incorporate country instead of pop elements into her bluegrass may explain why Vincent has not achieved the same widespread acclaim as Alison Krauss, for she is at least Ms. Krauss?s equal ...
Iron Horse - Fade to Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribute to Metallica [2003]

Review by G. Smith “here” I started listening to this thinking that it was some kind of John Cheese rip-off. You know, kinda making fun of bluegrass music and Metallica at the same time. The best bluegrass song: Rank Strangers- Stanley brothers
2007-11-19 10:57:00
I'd never been exposed to bluegrass music beyond what bits popped up in movies so my first hearing of Rank Strangers was an exciting revelation, opening a whole wilderness of unexplored music for me. I chose this as my first song in this section hoping it will do the same for you. As far as the music itself: The guitar is great, of course, and the singing has a wonderful nasal twang. The stop and start between the opening and the brief guitar solo is understated and effective. => Read more!
Senate Watch: Bluegrass Battle Looming
2007-11-05 19:41:00
Mitch McConnell is minority leader in the Senate, the top-ranked Republican in Congress. He is a four term incumbent with a massive campaign chest to the tune of $6.8 million. After winning his first election by the thinnest of margins in 1984, he has increased his victory total each cycle and won in 2002 by nearly 30 points. McConnell doesn't even have an opponent yet, but he could be one of the most vulnerable Senate incumbents in 2008.Democrats are hoping history repeats itself in 2008. Four years ago, it was their minority leader, Tom Daschle, who was knocked off in South Dakota. Daschle was doomed because he had become the figurehead of a national party that had become unpopular in his home state. Now it is McConnell who finds himself the figurehead of a national party that is increasingly unpopular. Though President Bush carried Kentucky by 20 points in 2004, his popularity in the state has fallen sharply since then. Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher is nearing the e...

Merle Haggard Debuts At Number 1 On Bluegrass Charts

The Politico has a great “story behind the song” type feature about how “For These Times” was written and eventually ended up on Martina McBride’s latest album, Waking Up Laughing. Inspiration is everywhere. It begins in Pittsburgh on election night 2006. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), losing to Democrat Robert P. Casey Jr. by a wide margin, ...
LSU Tigers Can’t Find Another Bluegrass Miracle
2007-10-14 08:51:00
A crazy last-minute play saved LSU from certain doom in 2002. This year’s trip to Kentucky didn’t end quite so well. The shuffle continues atop the national rankings, and we have the rip-roaring Southeastern Conference to thank for the latest commotion. The No. 1 LSU Tigers will be welcomed home tomorrow as a team newly housed somewhere towards the bottom of the top 10 after a blown lead and three overtimes led to a loss against 17th ranked Kentucky.Kentucky QB… Original post by http://feeds.blogcritics.org/~r-/bc/sports/~3/169620034/235123.-php

Rhonda Vincent Plays ?Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman?
2007-06-29 18:00:00
There?s something magical about bluegrass at the Ryman. In 1945, Grand Ole Opry member Bill Monroe introduced new banjo player Earl Scruggs to the Ryman crowd and his unique three-finger roll style wowed the audience in a performance that is widely acknowledged as the birth of bluegrass. This lifeblood still flows through the Ryman pews, and ...

EL "DOCTOR" DE LA MÚSICA BLUEGRASS
2007-05-05 22:09:00

Merle Haggard Going Bluegrass And Alan Jackson Teams Up Wth Brooks & Dunn
2007-03-02 11:31:02
Can you think of a bigger badass than Kris Kristofferson? Yea, me neither. He’s had an accomplished career as a songwriter, singer, and actor. He is a Rhodes scholar and could have had a promising career in the military had he not turned it down for doing something he’s passionate about. Star-Telegram.com has an article about his career, his plans for the future, a tour he’s going on (that unfortunately doesn’t include Texas), and Johnny Cash. Early in his Nashville days, before the hits started coming for one of America’s most accomplished songwriters, Kristofferson received a stern epistle from his mother. It was cleanly typed, single-spaced and to the point. She was admonishing her son, no less than a Rhodes scholar, for scrapping a promising military career to write songs in Music City. Somewhere in the body of the letter was a reference to Johnny Cash that was not the least bit flattering. … “I was in the old studio at Columbia one day,...
