The Soul of Rock and Roll Mourns the Passing of Bo Diddley
2008-06-03 07:01:00 Yesterday was a truly sad day for rock and roll as one of it’s original founding members passed away. Bo Diddley died yesterday of heart failure after months of ill health at the age of 79, and so I thought I would take today to mourn his passing, offer condolences to his family and ...
Traffic Live in 1972 to Celebrate Steve Winwood Turning 60
2008-05-14 07:01:00 It’s hard to imagine that back in the early 60s with the Spencer Davis Group that Steve Winwood was a mere 15. It was only 4 years later that he would put together the band Traffic, one of the first bands to delve into jazz fusion. I first came to know about Steve ...

Earthy, Bluesy Folk Stomp from Bonepony
2008-02-21 07:01:00 What is it about folk and blues music… the earthy place rock and roll began… that I keep coming back to and keeps speaking to me? Maybe it’s the earthy authenticity and honesty, or the rich heritage… I don’t know exactly what it is, but I like it. I like it so ...

Thoughts on the Blues ? Metal therapeutic Connection
2008-01-23 07:01:00 I’ve been a fan of the blues for a long time, but I’ve been a fan of hard rock for even longer, and if you follow hard rock to it’s ultimate conclusion you of course end up listening to a bit of metal as well. I’m not a hardcore metal head and I ...

The Song Remains the Same Part 2: A DVD Set Review
2008-01-11 07:01:00 For the past few days I’ve had the pleasure of screening part two of the new The Song Remains the Same release. I was pretty excited about finally seeing the film to go with the soundtrack and the bonuses certainly sweeten the deal a little. Originally, I had thought that the additional ...
The Song Remains the Same Part 1: An Album Review
2008-01-10 07:01:00 I don’t know about the rest of you, but for me, one of the most exciting album releases in 2007 was definitely the expanded version of Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same. This re-master and re-release was for both the original film on DVD and the soundtrack and was timed perfectly to coincide ...
Online Tribute Concert to Rory Gallagher
2007-12-21 07:01:00 One of the great things about running a music site is that people from all over the Internet like to email you all sorts of music related links. The suggestions the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll receives from it’s readers and other blog browers are always great, but I do get a fair ...
A Triumphant Return: The Reviews of the Led Zeppelin Reunion Show are In
2007-12-12 07:01:00 Well, this may be my third Led Zeppelin post this month already, but they are the band of the hour and being a fan, the band that is most prominent in my mind right now. This time the reviews of their reunion show are in. Most sources seem to agree, they were ...

Stevie Ray Vaughan Live: Putting Passion into the Music Like No Other
2007-11-12 06:01:00 When it comes to blues, Stevie Ray Vaughan is one of those names that is pretty common place amongst blues enthusiasts and even those who are not as big of fans. I’ve been a fan of SRV for a long time, but I didn’t really get engrossed with his music until I actually ...
It Ain?t Easy, Long John Baldry and the Birth of British Blues: A Book Revi
2007-11-06 06:01:00 Sometimes when I read about rock and roll history I’m amazed at how haphazardly mainstream history elevates some figures to iconic status, but leaves others to linger in obscurity. The same is true of mainstream success which can often have little to nothing to do with the actual influence a particular artist has ...

Led Zeppelin Catalog Going Digital
2007-10-16 07:01:00 As I’m sure you know by now, I’m a avid, and perhaps rabid, Led Zeppelin fan and so of course I had to comment on the fact that the band recently announced that on November 13, 2007 their entire catalog will be available in digital format. This officially makes November 2007 the month ...
Scotty L and the Demon Pig Trio: Great Name, Great Blues and Rock and Roll
2007-10-10 07:01:00 When it comes to blues, I like just about all of it. Each artist’s take on the classic blues ideas are unique, but some are more unique than others. Those truly unique ones are the artists that tend to really stick in my mind. A week or two ago I had ...
Leadbelly: Folk Master Plays Take this Hammer
2007-09-30 07:01:00 After I came to the early blues masters through the music of Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, the White Stripes and a few others, it really opened the floodgates for me and suddenly people like Blind Willie Mctell, Son House and Robert Johnson were having as big an influence on me as John Lennon and ...

Blues Jam: BB King, Albert King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan
2007-09-09 07:01:00 Blues is a genre that continues to inspire me everyday for it’s pure soul and emotional outpourings in musical form. Nothing in my mind is a better example of this than a great blues jam between a bunch of amazing musicians, each seeming to inspire the others to new heights. What could ...
The Late Great Cream: Less than Three Years, but a Huge Influence
2007-09-06 07:01:00 In rock and roll history, there are some bands that have obtained legendary, even mythic status. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead etc… each with careers that span multiple albums and often a decade or more. Then there is another group of rock groups that achieved this massive status ...
The Peter Green Era Fleetwood Mac
2007-08-28 07:01:00 I remember first hearing the pop styling of Fleetwood Mac very early in my youth on classic rock radio. They always seemed like one of those classic era bands that were always talked about in some way or another. Later on as I began to really investigate classic rock I did seek ...
Deep Folksy Blues and Rock and Roll from the Darrin James Band
2007-08-25 07:01:00 August must have been the month of vaguely folk-ish singer/songwriter music because it seemed as if every suggestion I received for the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll was in that genre or at least close enough to it that I would associate it with that label. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as ...
Crossroads Guitar Festival: One All Day Concert Later
2007-07-30 07:01:00 It’s amazing to think how quickly yesterday’s event went by. I was lucky enough to attend the second Crossroads Guitar Festival organized by Eric Clapton which had the gates opening early in the morning, the concert scheduled to start at noon and was slated to run until 11PM that night. I arrived ...
Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 Today
2007-07-28 07:01:00 Today I’ll be spending roughly 11 hours at one of the biggest concerts of the year, Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, 2007. I was lucky enough to get tickets a number of months back and have been anticipating the action packed lineup for some time now, especially when I received the reminder email from ...
Jeff Beck has the Touch, Live in Japan: What Every Musician Should Strive F
2007-07-24 07:01:00 There are certain musicians who understand precisely the effect the smallest change can make in their musicality; it’s all about subtlety. I use the term subtle in terms of rock and roll a lot (and often in reference to sounds most people would NOT call subtle), despite the fact that describing a musical ...
Yardbirds to Tour With Page and Beck?
2007-07-22 07:01:00 Just the other day, I caught the glimpse of what might be one of the most exciting concert announcements in a while. Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck will be reconvening with the two remaining members of the Yardbirds to tour… That sounds like one killer show. The Yardbirds may be the most influence band ...
Capturing Lightning in a Bottle Through Spontaneity: The Tale of the White
2007-07-06 07:01:00 Let me paint a picture for you… It’s 2002, late one night around 3 AM and you’re watching one of the backwater television stations that turns into MTV2 somewhere around midnight. A song comes on with a straight forward proto punk rock and roll riff with a video of little red and white ...
The Allman Brothers Band just isn?t the Same Without Duane: Live 1970
2007-07-03 07:01:00 When you listen to classic rock, blues rock and blues it just always seems like there are so many great bands to be listening to. Back when I first started playing guitar, with my interest in these genres just starting to peak, I mentioned to another musically inclined friend of mine that I ...
Once Again Inspired by the Blues Greats: Freddie King
2007-06-26 07:01:00 As someone who primarily listens to classic rock, I find that some times classic rock aficionados get too caught up in the artists that they fail to acknowledge many of the great artists who laid the groundwork. I am guilty of this far more than I’d like to admit. I would like to ...
The Black Keys: Hard Edged Blues Rock at its Finest
2007-06-21 07:01:00 Sometime in the not too distance past I seem to remember hearing of a band called the Black Keys… but both that memory and the reason I didn’t investigate them further at the time eludes me. The other day though, I happened upon this band again, and if I had not just splurged ...
Rory Gallagher Live in France 1980
2007-06-06 07:24:00 The great blues guitarist have all become legends in their own right to me over the years. Whether playing heart wrenching lead, or scorching blues stomp riffs there is just something about blues guitar that says… ?this is what it’s all about, man,? and I find that sentiment renewed every time I ...
Another Legendary Guitarist and Blues Man Under Appreciated: The Legend of
2007-05-30 07:14:00 I’m always excited to finally check out artists that I’ve repeatedly heard about and just never gotten to experience. I find this a lot in blues because some of the blues legends, people like Albert Collines, Freddie King, many of the earlier artists like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Son House, and later greats ...
Briefly on the Influence of Bo Diddley
2007-05-18 07:07:00 In modern times, with so much rock and roll come and gone, it can be easy for us to forget some of the pioneers of the genre, taking blues and folk and twisting them into something new. These artists have influenced thousands if not hundreds of thousands over the years in one way ...
Loose, Rough, Raw or Self Indulgent and Excessive: The Style of Led Zeppeli
2007-05-10 07:18:00 Some people are just born in the wrong eras I guess. I think I’m one of these people, as I was born a few years after Led Zeppelin disbanded and was still far to young to go to the reunion tour so never got to see Led Zeppelin in their element: live on ...
Thoughts on Icky Thump: First Listen to the New Single From the White Strip
2007-05-08 07:08:00 Although it was released towards the end of April, (the 26 I think), I have been avoiding listening to the new single, ?Icky Thump?, from the White Stripes. I had decided after reading some earlier first glimpses that I would prepare by throwing out all my previously conceived notions of what it would be ...
Late Night Festival Folk, Blues, Country and Bluegrass on PBS
2007-05-07 07:08:00 I’ve never really been a 9-5 type of person as it just does not seem to fit well with my sleeping habits. I prefer to be up working or researching during the late night hours when my brain has been active for a while and sleep for a few hours in the early ...

2006-12-16 14:16:02 MINEAPOLLIS BLUES-ROCK QUINTET) Uma Tremenda Paulera quase esquecidaGood blues rock almost forgotten by the time Minneapolis blues-rock quintet Crow was formed in 1967 by frontman Dave Wagner, guitarist Dick Weigand, his bassist brother Larry, and keyboardist "Kink" Middlemist. Originally dubbed South 40, they added former Castaways drummer Denny Craswell to the lineup prior to recording their 1969 debut LP, Crow Music, for the Amaret label; the single "Evil Woman Don't You Play Your Games With Me" cracked the U.S. Top 20, even though its distinctive horn arrangement was overdubbed against the band's wishes. Crow by Crow followed in 1970, although the single "Cottage Cheese" failed to attract much attention. In the wake of 1971's Mosaic, Crow disbanded, although Wagner resurfaced in 1973 with a solo LP, David Wagner D/B/A Crow. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide EVIL WOMAN - The Best of Crow A generous 18-track compilation of Crow, the keyboard-spiked garage pop-rock band...
