Meet your new Chicago Transit Board
2009-11-12 20:06:00 This morning's Chicago Transit Board meeting looked different than most meeting days, and not just because of the band playing outside CTA headquarters and the large police presence. There's been some reshuffling on the transit board, so "Going Public" decided to take a look at who's who on the transit board (after the jump). The board is composed of seven members, who are appointed for seven-year terms. Three members are appointed by the governor and four members are appointed by the mayor. Gov. Quinn announced two appointments on Wednesday....
Making Board Members Think They're In Charge
2009-11-09 16:18:00 "Without you saying anything to them, they will believe that they are responsible for making big decisions about budget matters, school policies, hiring of the principal and dozens of other matters." Imagine charter schools CEO Dennis Bakke in a recently revealed email about how to pick and manipulate charter boards. (Pick your board members carefully) Cross-posted with TWIE....
School janitor suing Board of Education and CPS for dropping a fan on her f
2009-11-06 00:00:00 A school janitor is suing the Chicago Board of Education and Chicago Public Schools after a portable heater/fan was dropped on her foot. Yolanda Hallom says that on November 14, 2008, while working at Roswell B. Mason Elementary School as a janitor, "an agent and/or servant" of the defendants was carrying a portable heater/fan that dropped on her foot. Hallom asserts that the defendants were negligent when they, among other things, "carelessly and negligently dropped a heavy item upon plaintiff." Yolanda's husband, Tracy, is also suing for loss of consortium. Read the complaint after the jump. Follow me on Twitter at jenfernicola....
Board Reverses Itself On Avondale Montessori School
2009-11-01 18:53:00 Never one to miss out on an opportunity to disappoint parents and undercut positive momentum, the Board of Education is shafting a seemingly well-organized and appealing effort to start a Montessori school in Avondale. Word's out that the CPS Office of New Schools, now under the control of newcomer Leigh McGuinan, has reversed course on supporting a charter proposal from the Avondale Montessori folks that Megan Cottrell profiled here a few weeks ago. See details below. At the time, it seemed like Avondale was going to get a positive recommendation from ONS and an easy approval from the Board. What happened? Maybe the Avondale folks were counting their chickens before they were hatched. Maybe they were just caught in the changeover...

Big Bad October Board Meeting
2009-10-28 02:27:00 This month's board meeting takes place in the shadow of all sorts of Chicago school controversies: youth violence, Bucktown vs. Pulaski, cuts to after school programs, Fenger vs. Altgeld Gardens, new hires (new schools, medical officer, etc.). Of course, none of these are on the October_26_2009_Notice-_Agenda_Listing.pdf, which includes few notable items (though much of the agenda is so vague as to make it difficult to figure out ahead of time). They'll be amending school promotion (again). They're hoping to pequalify various turnaround vendors and consultants. They're going to set new boundaries for Hurley, Lee, Pasteur (re West Lawn)...

Board of Ed sued after boy loses finger
2009-10-21 23:56:00 A woman is suing the Chicago Board of Education after her 8 year old son lost a finger while playing on a fence on the school's property. According to the complaint, on September 14, 2009, Semetrius Pitchford, a third grader at George Manierre School N. Cleveland in Chicago, was walking home with friends when they began playing on a gate that is used by trash haulers to gain access to trash bins next to the school. The complaint states that the gate is on a track and while Semetrius was playing on it, another child pushed the gate to close it. It further states that "While [Semetrius] was holding onto and riding upon the gate, a portion of [his] left...
Fenger Flip-Flop: Board Reverses Itself After Last Week's Summit
2009-10-16 02:55:00 So much for the secret Huberman plan, the laundry list of anti-violence ideas floated by the Mayor last week, and the so-called violence summit. Less than a week after ruling out any changes in attendance areas for students attending Fenger, the Board has reversed itself and will now allow some Fenger students to transfer to Carver mid-year and will revamp Carver Middle School into a new charter high school. Stories here here and here. I have to admit I'm surprised. I didn't think that the pressure was all that strong either locally or nationally. And I don't think the change will do much to solve the underlying problems. But then I still don't know exactly where the Ville is or...

Welcome! New board chair Peterson has $300 million hole to fill
2009-10-07 03:00:00 Terry Peterson hasn't even started his new job as chairman of the CTA board, and already he may be facing his biggest challenge. As he told a City Council committee yesterday, the CTA is facing a $300 million budget gap for next year. The CTA will release its busget at next Wednesday's board meeting.Peterson told the Sun-Times that in trying to cloase the budget gap, he he "can't take anything off the table -- including the possibility of fare hikes, service cuts and union givebacks." Great to hear he's going to talk to unions, since union wages make up the vast majority of the budget. This year non-union employees had to take furlough days off, saw delays in raises, and...

Buffalo Grove Village Trustee Jeffrey Berman. From the Village of Buffalo Grove official web site. The Buffalo Grove Village Board will consider the adoption of a Village elected official Recall Ordinance, tonight (Monday, September 21, 2009). The primary sponsor of the ordinance is Village Trustee Jeffrey Berman, a lawyer and a Republican. 2009-09-21 03:05:00 Chicago Dance Crash is doing something I approve of. They have created an entirely new dance production based on ideas that were contributed by the masses of the internet. School Board Bans Facebook, Twitter For Teachers
2009-08-10 15:13:00 Just a few days after patting itself on the back for enlisting a R&B singer with a MySpace page and lots of Twitter followers, CPS's new email policy (PDF) requiring teachers to use official email for all communications with students has come to light. Blog readers brought this issue to light in reader commentsover the weekend. No communiating with students or their families via personal email. No cell phones. No Twitter. No Facebook. Read below for one teacher's dismayed reaction, and weigh in with your thoughts. Does this seem like a legitimate restriction for safety or other reasons, or an over-reaction that will hinder teacher-student communications? ...

Board Of Ed President Subpoenaed - Says He Never Made Calls
2009-08-05 17:51:00 From the Sun Times: Asked whether he has ever made a call on behalf of someone else, Scott said, "Nope. Never." Scott said the Board of Education launched its internal investigation of the admissions process before the federal grand jury issued separate subpoenas for school records and Scott's testimony. Asked whether he had ever heard of a call being placed to get a student clouted in, he said, "That's a different question. You asked me if I made a call. No comment. It's an ongoing investigation."What do you make of that evasive answer? And who else do you think is going to get subpoenaed?...

Board "Do-Over" On Big Picture School Closing
2009-07-21 21:49:00 For reasons not entirely clear, the Board is holding a hearing about closing Big PIcture high school next week on the 28th, from 4-6. Only thing is, the decision to close Big Picture has already been made. WTF? A friend of the blog says that this probably has something to do with the Board not having followed proper procedure -- 2 meetings are required, one in the community affected, transcripts are required to be submitted to the board, etc. "They closed the schools without going through proper procedures. With the Soto bill pending, maybe they got nervous. So now they are claiming that the schools aren't "officially" closed yet, with hearing #1 scheduled for the 29th." Could be true. I...

Hinton Elementary School, located at 644 W. 71st Street. According to the complaint, her daughter was "suddenly and without warning attacked and assaulted by another student ... and was severely beaten and kicked in and about various parts of her body." June Board Meeting
2009-06-23 15:48:00 I'm sure the Board won't be shy about telling us what we should think about this month's Board meeting (Wednesday June 24), but maybe we can take an independent look and make up our own minds. For example, the agenda for the June board meeting includes lots of retirement resolutions - is there anyone who's not getting a resolution, I wonder, or anyone on the two pages of names who is an unexpected or last-minute retirement? There are also several resolutions calling on the PBC to build or modernize several schools. (Again, let us know if you see anything out of the ordinary.) I assume these resolutions are entirely nonbinding, but still noteworthy if the PBC listens to the Board....

Faith Board Enables Emotional Abuse Part Two
2009-05-05 12:17:00 I guess Family Life got an earful or something, because they decided they were going to 'change' the article. I have to say - it didn't make it any better. This faith board is still enabling emotional abuse.Do you have a one-way marriage?See yesterdays post, Faith Board Enables Emotional Abuse to see where we left off.Editor?s note: One of the most difficult issues to address today is, ?How long do you stay in a very unhappy marriage?? In the following article an anonymous wife describes her experiences and what God has taught her during a long, difficult relationship. It also sparked some interesting discussion in our comments section (see end of article) after it was sent by e-mail in the May 2009 issue of The Family Room. To provide greater context to the story and to address some misunderstandings, we worked with the writer to make revisions on May 4, 2009. Ahem. I don't think there were many misunderstandings. Just because they changed the slant a bit to making her 'choice...

The 4 Best Board Games That Should Be Made Into Sitcoms.
2009-03-04 17:44:00 I saw the other day an article about how a network might bring back, or run, or something, the show Rules of Engagement, a show that I have, unfortunately, seen almost 5 minutes of in my lifetime. Now, I'm not saying that a show which via it's title compares marriage to combat, and which premises its entire outlook on life on a few Henny Youngman jokes about the differences between single life and married life is not funny...... wait, that's exactly what I'm saying. What is the point of the show "Rules of Engagement?" Where is the humor? Let me sum up what I assume to be the plot of every single episode of Rules of Engagement, ever: Married guys feel as though they have to pay attention to their wives. Single guys sometimes feel lonely. Hilarity (?) ensues. Also, people fall down. Probably. Is there something I'm missing here? Is there something that's funny about marriage, or singledom -- and by that, I mean, inherently funny, such that marriage, or lack thereof, beco... |
