Bob Wickman (P-AZ)
2007-10-03 06:03:00 Wickman is considering retirement after retiring the only batter he faced on Sunday. “This gives me a chance to walk off on my own terms if I do walk off,” he said. “I got the last out that I faced and ended up being pretty successful. Hopefully, I helped this ball club and took some pressure off some of the guys. All I wanted was a chance to pitch, and to show to myself that I still could pitch.” He is not eligible for the post-season roster.

Diamondbacks Sign Bob Wickman
2007-09-07 23:47:00 The D'Backs have experienced second-half dropoffs from late-inning relievers Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon. Plus, Juan Cruz's shoulder may be barking again. As a result, Arizona added some depth by signing 38 year-old Bob Wickman today. The team's press release is claiming he's 35 but the beer gut is definitely more indicative of a 38 year-old. Wickman must've gotten over his dissatisfaction with pitching in non-save situations, since Jose Valverde is going strong with 42 saves.

Ageless Maddux, Sleepy Eyes Harang, and Hermida?s Summer
2007-08-30 07:49:00 I found this interesting, regarding the ageless Greg Maddux: ?I haven’t felt this good in my life,? Maddux said yesterday. ?Maybe when I was in high school.? Early this season, Maddux agreed to allow head trainer Todd Hutcheson and assistant Paul Navarro to work on his pitching arm several days per week. The 41-year-old said he feels ?a lot better? than in other Augusts and cracked: ?I wish I felt like this when I was good and could put it to use.? Maddux said the arm maintenance is allowing him to recover from games faster, which is enabling him to throw more in his bullpen sessions, yielding better feel when he pitches. The right-hander hasn’t allowed a walk in his past 35 innings, a span of five starts. Maddux is rather quietly stringing together a very valuable fantasy season, allowing only 1.17 walks every nine innings, which is even better than his historically pinpointing career numbers (1.82). He’s got 10 wins and a 3.90 ERA, and is enjoying his best seaso...

Renck's Latest Rockie Rumors
2007-08-28 18:28:00 Rockies beat reporter Troy E. Renck had the scoop on all kinds of Rockie rumors yesterday; I'm just now getting to it. Let's look at some highlights from his column. Renck suggests the Rox take a look at Bob Wickman. Meanwhile, the Phillies actually inquired but aren't expected to work out a deal. The Indians will take a pass. Renck mentions that the Rockies have "long coveted" catcher Paul Lo Duca. Lo Duca should be there for the signing this winter. The Rockies will have around $45MM tied up in Todd Helton, Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe, Brian Fuentes, and Aaron Cook for 2008. Even if the team raises its $55MM payroll, someone has to go. By the way, locking up Holliday long-term will cost a king's ransom. He's a Scott Boras client. Given the burden of Todd Helton's contract and his no-trade clause, he may be immovable. But a .400 OBP is still valuable any way you slice it, so perhaps the Red Sox or Angels ...

MLB News From Yesterday - Bob Wickman, Zach Greinke, David Murphy, Brandon
2007-08-25 15:32:00 In a surprising closer change, the Braves designated their closer, Bob Wickman, for assignment without a clear-cut back-up. Manager Bobby Cox eqivocated on who will handle the role, but expect Rafael Soriano to get the first crack with Pete Moylan as the next option. This move could also signal the imminent return of Octavio Dotel from the D.L. is also a possibility. Royals' starter-turned flame-throwing reliever-turned starter again, Zach Greinke, threw three shutout innings in his return to the rotation. While he has taken the a successful step, he may not be ready to throw win-qualifying innings until September. Rookie OF David Murphy hit his first HR for the Texas Rangers since being acquired in the Eric Gagne deal. Overall, he has hit a scorsching .481 in 27 ABs with four coubles, a triple and a homerun. As a lefty hitter, this effort could play Murphy into a significant 2008 role. However, Lets see what his metrics look like when he ...

Bob Wickman DFA'd By Braves
2007-08-25 03:02:00 Wondering where all the posts have been lately? Like many in Illinois, my power has been out for a couple of days. I'm back in business, trying to catch up. We'll start with Bob Wickman. He's been designated for assignment. Sometime during the next ten days, he'll be traded or claimed off waivers. The move was brought about both by Wickman's mediocre pitching and attitude towards pitching in non-save situations. This year, his control slipped and has luck on hits allowed ran out simultaneously. The result? Too many baserunners for a late-inning reliever. My guess is that the 38 year-old will retire now or after the season. Rafael Soriano has been decent aside from home runs allowed, and he'll have first crack at ninth inning duties until Octavio Dotel returns.

Atlanta Braves cut ties with struggling closer Bob Wickman (AP)
2007-08-25 02:19:00 The Atlanta Braves cut ties with struggling closer Bob Wickman on Friday, designating him for assignment. The move came a day after Wickman surrendered a game-winning two-run home run to the Reds’ Adam Dunn in the 12th inning of a 9-7 loss. Wickman is 3-3 with a 3.92 ERA and 20 saves in 26 chances. ...

Failed Trades
2007-08-01 19:17:00 Let's take a look at some deals that almost happened yesterday. Kyle Farnsworth for Bob Wickman. This would've been fun, reunions with former teams for both players. However, the Braves wanted the Yankees to pick up all of Farnsworth's salary, apparently. Brian Cashman didn't want to make him go away that badly, and Wickman would probably be a nonfactor back in the AL. Mariners acquire Mark Loretta. Eh. Let's not overstate the abilities of Loretta. It sounds like Tim Purpura wanted some kind of legitimate prospect for him. Rockies send Jeff Baker and others to Tampa Bay for Dan Wheeler. We can't really evaluate this one without knowing who else would've been involved. And the Rays don't really have a place to play Baker; they're already squeezed finding playing time for Jonny Gomes. If Rocco Baldelli ever gets healthy they'll really have a pickle. I mentioned in a recent interview at D-Rays Bay - Wheeler would pro...

Stark On Dotel, Wickman
2007-07-31 20:35:00 Jayson Stark was just on ESPN talking about the crazy market for relievers. As you know, the Octavio Dotel to Atlanta trade is held up until medical records for all six players involved in the Teixeira deal are reviewed. That's just business as usual. But Stark's saying that teams are still calling up the Royals trying to beat the offer of Kyle Davies for Dotel. He also mentioned that teams are calling the Braves to try to pry Bob Wickman loose in the event that the Braves do get Dotel. Tim Brown backs this up - Wickman can be had if Dotel is secured.

Interested In A Massive Lawsuit? Help Pen A New Book About The Yankees!
2007-07-24 22:21:00 Some of you may remember a few years ago, when former Yankee clubhouse worker Paul Priore sued the New York Yankees for $165 million. The case was eventually thrown out, but Priore made explosive accusations, claiming he was fired for being gay and HIV positive, and was sexually harassed by members of the Yankees during the 1996 and 1997 seasons.Well, now he has jut put up an ad on Craigslist, seeking a co-author for a book he's writing about his time working for the Yankees. The ad reads like this:"I have many fascinating 'insider' stories to tell about the New York Yankees, some of which are rather seamy. I would like to find an experienced co-writer to work with me on an explosive, 'tell-all' book about my experiences at the New York Yankees, which will include detailed and vivid descriptions of the many things that I witnessed, overheard, or was otherwise privy to, during the time period that I worked for my father or directly for the team. The right candidate needs to have...
Bob Wickman Activated by Braves
2007-05-16 20:05:00 Bob Wickman was activated by the Atlanta Braves yesterday, who indicated that he will resume his normal closing duties. Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano, who had formed a closing tandem while Wickman was sidelined, will be returned to their former roles. It wouldn't be a surprise to see one - or both - of these two to take the closer's job right back within a few weeks if Wickman doesn't shape up. A BB/9 over 7.00 is terrible and completely unacceptable for a closer. If Wickman doesn't lower than quickly, he might find himself in a middle relief role.Look for an article on players to Buy Low and Sell High later today.
