Media continues to discuss Bobby Fischer
2008-02-09 17:28:00
Almost a month after the passing of Robert(Bobby) Fischer the main stream media continues to discuss this controversial figure. A recent article on the New York Times website has a great video of Fischer's appearance on the Tonight Show hosted by Dick Cavett in 1971. The article is appropriately titled "Was It Only a Game?" Dick Cavett discusses the Bobby he knew. A well written and wonderful article that everyone should read.A Filipina woman who claims Bobby Fischer is the father of her child is demanding a share of his $1.8 million estate. Read more..In 2005 when ChessManiac.com was a very young site I sent an email message to Bobby Fischer inviting him to play chess. Then I would check my logs to see if anyone from Iceland had visited the site. Sure enough there were a few visitors from Iceland shortly after I sent out the email. I feel honored that Bobby Fischer may have played or at least checked out the site at one point in time. Here's to you, Bobby...Dennis Steelehtt...
Filipino woman claims share of Bobby Fischer estate
2008-02-07 06:58:00
MANILA (Reuters) - A Filipino woman and her daughter are claiming a share of the estate of late American-born chess legend Bobby Fischer, a lawyer said on Wednesday. Samuel Estimo told Reuters he was gathering documents and evidence to prove that Fischer had a daughter with Marilyn Young in 2001. He said the reclusive chess master had left a $1.95 million estate. "I have with me a copy of the passports, pictures and bank accounts of Fischer's seven-year-old daughter," Estimo said, adding he would file a claim in Iceland. Fischer, who died last month, had renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved to Iceland in 2005. "I believe we have substantial proof to back the claims of Marilyn Young and her daughter Jinky. They even stayed with him in Iceland for three weeks in September 2005." Two nephews and a Japanese woman, who claimed to have married the reclusive chess master, are also contesting Fischer's estate. Washington was also trying to recover money fro...

A Pleasant Memory of Bobby Fischer
2008-01-28 05:57:00
I have been critical of the very distasteful rantings of the late Bobby Fischer and have declined to write about him for the most part, although his games remain a remarkable piece of chess beauty. Hans Ree takes us back to a more pleasant time, in his current Dutch Treat column at ChessCafe. The year is 1968 and the story Hans writes about takes place in, of all places, Netanya, Israel. En la genialidad no hay modestia
2008-01-24 05:17:00
No, no podría vencerle. Air Jordan XX2. Homenaje a otro genio. Compártelo

I was away this weekend so I felt sure another blog would beat me to it and post Cue Fanfare by Prefab Sprout in tribute to Bobby Fischer.I recommend The Guardian's Bobby Fischer obituary for the story of a truly remarkable life, written by a fellow chess player.I also recommend Prefab Sprout's debut album Swoon, from which Cue Fanfare is taken. It's raw but dazzlingly intelligent and ambitious (a bit like Bobby Fischer I guess), and it's probably my favourite Prefab Sprout album.Prefab Sprout - Cue Fanfare (iTunes)

Garry Kasparov had said about him :Fischer's victories brought problems for many people in the soviet camp, because it was thought there had been failures of training or discipline that should be corrected. No one could accept that it was simply Fischer's genius that was causing the trouble.

Bobby Fischer Dead at 64
2008-01-19 06:32:00
Bobby Fischer, considered the greatest chess player in the world, dies at the age of 64. Fischer led a very inspiring life. He was the the only United States world champion. In 1972 he beat Boris Spassky to take the world title away from the Soviet Union. It was described as "The Match of the Century." Bobby Fischer. This enigmatic genius elevated the game to hitherto unimaginable heights, reaching the front pages of the world's newspapers and more than doubling the number of registered players in the Western World. Fischer's popularization of the game he loved had a pronounced effect on chess literature. Since December 1970his successful journey on the road to the World Championship title, more chess magazines were born, more newspapers published chess columns, and many more chess books appeared on the market than ever before over the same time span. It surprises me that only a small handful of these books have been about Fischer. We must thank Bobby Fischer for being Bobby Fi...

AP - "Chess," Bobby Fischer once said, "is life." It was the chess master's tragedy that the messy, tawdry details of his life often overshadowed the sublime genius of his game. Fischer, who has died at the age of 64, was a child prodigy, a teenage grandmaster and — before age 30 — a world champion who triumphed in a Cold War showdown with Soviet champion Boris Spassky.

Brilliant chess master, world-class eccentric Bobby Fischer dies
2008-01-18 19:06:00
Now, you'd think that this would be a sad event being that he was an American chess champion.  But let's take a look at what kind of man Bobby Fischer was: In recent years, Fischer became better known for his outspoken criticism of the United States. Interviewed by a Philippines radio station hours after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he allegedly called reports of a plane hitting the Pentagon "wonderful news" and said American foreign policy had provoked the attacks. He also become known for virulent anti-Semitism, even though his mother was Jewish. In 2002, Atlantic magazine reported that during a Manila radio broadcast he described his enemies as "Jews, secret Jews, or CIA rats who work for the Jews." So I'm not sad that this anti-American, Jew hating monster is dead.  I'm glad the world can now be a better place without hate mongers like him in the world. Just because he was good at chess doesn't mean he was a good person.  Maybe I have a cold h...

Goodbye Bobby Fischer
2008-01-18 17:50:00
I'm saddened to hear from this entry on Terry Gardener's blog that Bobby Fischer passed away yesterday (Thursday the 17th of January, 2008). Bobby was one of the cleverest, and yet yampiest, Chess players ever, "mad, bad and dangerous to know", and it'd be a real surprise if you hadn't heard of him. Even if you weren't keen on Chess, Bobby was a 'larger than life' figure, often getting in the Press, and had even had the Musical Chess based upon him. He achieved a FIDE estimated ELO rating of 2785 after winning the 1972 World Chess Championship against the outgoing Grand Master, Boris Spassky. Unfortunately there's a danger that it's likely to be some of his behavior and some of the comments he made that he will be remembered for, rather than his Chess playing, or the innovations he brought to Chess (both theory, practice and the game itself). In an effort to promote Talent and Creativity, rather than an encyclopedic Analysis of Chess openings, and generate more...

R.I.P. Bobby Fischer
2008-01-18 15:36:00
Bobby Fischer, the former world champion of chess whose success launched a renaissance of chess in the United States in the 1960's and 1970's, has died in Iceland at the age of 64. Fischer was the most brilliant player of his generation, becoming an international grand master at the age of fifteen and becoming the only person from the United States to ever win the world championship when he defeated Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a 1972 match in Reyjkavik that was heavy with Cold War overtones. He was also filled with suspicions of others, and in his post-champion years made news more frequently for expressing anti-Semitic views than for anything related to chess. Fischer was the first non-Soviet player to hold the world title in the post-WWII period. Fischer forfeited his title in 1975 after refusing to defend it against another Soviet player, Anatoly Karpov, and retired from competitive chess for years, although in 1992 he did play Spassky in a rematch of their 1972 ma...
