Celebrity Baby Name - Luka Bodhi
2009-08-14 10:00:00
Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio and his wife welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on August 1. Their son's name is Luka Bodhi. I like the name, though I think "Luka Colicchio" (LOO-ka ko-LEE-kee-o, roughly) could be a tongue twister for some. What do you think? Source: People

The Truth About ?Big Oil?, Democrats and Environmentalism
2008-04-02 12:00:00
Barack Obama’s new ad drags out the usual Democrat boogeyman, “Big Oil.” He says since the ’70s gas crisis, the only thing that has changed is that “Exxon is making $40 billion a year and we are paying $3.50 for gas.” Barack says “Big Oil” will pay a penalty for “windfall profits.” So what are “windfall profits?” It’s a term that is thrown around quite a bit by liberals and I want to make sure everyone understands what they are talking about. A “windfall profit” is defined as: An unexpected profit arising from causes not controlled by the recipient. profit that occurs unexpectedly as a consequence of some event not controlled by those who profit from it By definition, “Big Oil” has nothing to do with the profits they are currently enjoying, but they are being vilified for them. But oil companies don’t set the price. That is determined by the futures market. Oil is...
130 Dead in Tibet Protests, Leftists in America Still Pine for Communism
2008-03-24 13:35:00
While the leftists in America see fascist and totalitarian boogeymen behind every badge a cop wears, they still call for socialism and communism to take root in America. There is no doubt that the anti-war movement is run by communist sympathizers.
Che Guevara Took A Lot of Pleasure in Killing
2008-03-17 13:00:00
Che Guevara is an icon, but those who idolize him idolize a lie. Che was not a “freedom fighter.” He was a killer who enjoyed killing. He was, after all, Fidel Castro’s executioner. How many people Che executed is debatable. As Humberto Fontova, author of Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him, writes: A Cuban prosecutor of the time who quickly defected in horror and disgust named Jose Vilasuso estimates that Che signed 400 death warrants the first few months of his command in La Cabana. A Basque priest named Iaki de Aspiazu, who was often on hand to perform confessions and last rites, says Che personally ordered 700 executions by firing squad during the period. Cuban journalist Luis Ortega, who knew Che as early as 1954, writes in his book Yo Soy El Che! that Guevara sent 1,897 men to the firing squad. In his book Che Guevara: A Biography, Daniel James writes that Che himself admitted to ordering “several thousand” exe...
Tim Tsui Toy Show at Bodhi Gallery
2008-03-04 00:22:00
Great custom show by one of the original simian toy makers, Hong Kong's Tim Tsui. He shared a show at the Bodhi Gallery on Brick Lane with talented young artist Alice Chan. Da Minci is one of my fave interpretations of the popular monkey designs and to see him making Da Minci into customised as superhero icons is amazing. The prototype (all-white image) looks pretty darn tasty too....More great pics from Doc18's Flickr

The Human Cost of Illegal Immigration - Importing Pedophilia
2008-02-21 13:00:00
Illegal immigration is more than getting enough people in America to pick lettuce or roof houses. While the people who crash the border to do those jobs take jobs from legal citizens, it is far from the most damaging of issues. Not everyone who comes to America is here to do jobs Americans won’t do. Some are here doing things too many Americans are already doing. Virginia’s Attorney General Bob McDonnell announced yesterday that the state police, along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), identified one hundred seventy-one members of the state’s sex offender registry that are in the country illegally. These were criminals who were already convicted on sexual assault charges and were on the state’s registry. “Operation Cold Play” began when the Virginia State Police checked the Sex Offender Registry and submitted a list of more than 500 foreign born criminals to immigration. More than half of those offenders were in this country i...
The Human Cost of Illegal Immigration - Part One: Coming to America
2008-02-19 13:00:00
What is the cost of illegal immigration in human numbers? The cost can be broken into two parts. First, what is the cost of human life in just trying to get into the country? Coming to America illegally is a dangerous and deadly way to immigrate. It often results in a hundreds of deaths each year. It is a number that doesn’t have to even exist. Exposure The United States border with Mexico has fences and walls built to deter illegal immigrants from entering the country. Because of the barriers, those who insist on entering the country illegally find themselves traveling through very harsh desert environments. This ends up killing many of them. In 2001, fourteen people died from the desert heat after they were abandoned by the coyote they paid to get them to America. Survivors said the group, some of them said to be from the Mexican state of Veracruz, was smuggled into the United States on Saturday east of Yuma in the rugged terrain of the Cabeza Prieta National Wildli...

General Welfare Insanity or How We Are Spending Ourselves into Oblivion
2007-12-31 11:34:00
$9,128,000,000,000+. That is what our national debt sits at as I write this article. I can’t put the actual number because it is increasing so fast it would be wrong within minutes. In fact, the debt is increasing at a rate of one million dollars a minute. That’s about $1.36 billion dollars a day, according to the U.S. National Debt Clock. We are spending money like there is no tomorrow. And if we don’t stop, there might not be a tomorrow for our republic. Why are we spending so much money? Our elected leaders have warped the phrase “general welfare” into something it was never meant to mean. The term “general welfare” appears only two times in the Constitution. The first time it appears in the Preamble: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to o...
The Fruits of the Bodhi Tree

[Buddha ] Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death can erase our good deeds We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make our world The Four Reliances First, rely on the spirit and meaning of the teachings, not on the words; Second, rely on the teachings, not on the personality of the teacher; Third, rely on real wisdom, not superficial interpretation; And fourth, rely on the essence of your pure Wisdom Mind, not on judgmental perceptions Pay no attention to the faults of others, things done or left undone by others. Consider only what by oneself is done or left undone Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned. Words have the power to both destroy ...

Buddhism Comes to the West, by Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi
2007-09-07 23:20:00
Buddhism Comes to the West, by Ven. Bhikkhu BodhiAn extract of a talk by Bhikkhu Bodhi from a seminar on "The Necessity for Promoting Buddhism in Europe," held on the first death anniversary of Ven. Mitirigala Dhammanisanthi Thera - Colombo, Sri Lanka 2nd July 2000.The topic of this seminar is very timely, for in many Western countries today Buddhism is the fastest growing religion. In North America, Western Europe, and Australia-New Zealand, hundreds of Buddhist centres have sprung up almost overnight, offering teachings and meditation retreats even in remote regions. Today Buddhism is espoused not only by those in the alternative culture, as was the case in the 1960s, but by businessmen, physicists, computer programmers, housewives, real-estate agents, even by sports stars, movie actors, and rock musicians. Thousands of books on Buddhism are now available, dealing with the teachings at both scholarly and popular levels, while Buddhist magazines and journals expand their circulatio...
Sesión doble: Hot Fuzz y Le llaman Bodhi
2007-09-05 21:57:00

Bodhi Tree in Islamabad
2007-03-19 16:28:00
Guest Post by Mast Qalandar In my last two posts on Islamabad (here and here) I talked about the woods and the forest trails that I love so much and take to them whenever I can. In those woods, at the foot of the Margallas, until a few years ago, there was a very large and ...
