The Lancet Body count Fraud Continues to unravel
2008-01-05 10:33:00 I’ve written before about the problems with the “Body Count” article published just before the US 2006 Congressional elections in Lancet. LINK LINK2 BizzyBlog has a summary if you aren’t familiar with the story: that right before the US Congressional elections, the Lancet published an article claiming a large number of deaths since the US invasion: ...
Business as usual - Iraq Body Count, Human Rights Watch and that empire-bui
2007-11-04 14:14:00 by Gabriele Zamparini Iraq Body Count, a divisive issue The list of Iraq Body Counts supporters is getting longer by the day. Just three examples may help you to get the picture: - The Weekly Standard - the voice of the Neo-Con in Washington and whose Editor, William Kristol, is also Chairman of the Project for the New American Century used IBC to attack actor and anti-war activist Tim Robbins - The Washington Post used IBC to attack MoveOn.org - The right-wing American Spectator used IBC to attack Codepink While the mainstream media are continuing to use figures provided by the website Iraq Body Count (IBC) to sell the public a number for total post-invasion deaths of Iraqis that is perhaps 5-10% of the true death toll, too many on the left and within the so-called anti-war movement keep being silent when not openly defending Iraq Body Count and attacking those who have been trying to highlight this bloody scandal. Its a divisive issue, they say. One da...

2007-11-02 16:33:00 Anyone who has read some of my stuff in the past can attest to the fact that I have some bizarre notions in my mind. One of the weirdest I've come up with in my strange mental meanderings has to be this:Body CountI love a murder mystery,But only if it?s Brit. The grislier, the better--My dark side thrives on it.It may start with a bodyChucked in the woods somewhereOr tucked up in an old trunk,Stuffed underneath the stair.Along comes some old codgerWith terrier on a leadThat sniffs out something sanguine--Call coppers with great speed! Then enters the detective,Beleaguered by his woes,While somewhere on the fringes,The killer surely goes. All this sets me to thinkingNot of the shot or stabThe thing that I imagineIs me upon the slab.If I were the first victim,What would my corpse reveal? In coroner?s reporting,There?s naught I could conceal. She?d start with my foundation;Feet, singular she?d note. The second from the big toeIs ?freaky?, and I quote. Then moving ?long the carcass,So reachin...

Media Alert: Iraq Body Count: A Very Misleading Exercise - Correcting for
2007-10-04 21:21:00 by Media Lens Introduction The mainstream media are continuing to use figures provided by the website Iraq Body Count (IBC) to sell the public a number for total post-invasion deaths of Iraqis that is perhaps 5-10% of the true death toll. As we recently reported, only a handful of media outlets covered a new ORB poll revealing that 1.2 million Iraqis had been murdered since the 2003 invasion. BBC Online provided a rare example: A UK-based polling agency, Opinion Research Business (ORB), said it had extrapolated the figure by asking a random sample of 1,461 Iraqi adults how many people living in their household had died as a result of the violence rather than from natural causes. The results lend weight to a 2006 survey of Iraqi households published by the Lancet, which suggested that about 655,000 Iraqi deaths were 'a consequence of the war'. However, these estimates are both far higher than the running total of reported civilian deaths maintaine...
The Oracle Iraq Body Count
2007-09-22 13:16:00 by Gabriele Zamparini The Toronto Star informed us: "The death toll could be twice our number, but it could not possibly be 10 times higher," he [John Sloboda, professor of psychology at Keele University, and a co-founder of IBC] told me, referring to the other studies. Question: How can a professor of psychology who collects Iraqi deaths through media reports possibly know what the death toll could be? We are in prophecy territory here. Dont take me wrong; I love mythology and I find the oracles some of the most fascinating and suggestive figures in that kind of literature. But I prefer science, especially when in Iraq we are responsible for a GENOCIDE! The British media watchdog Medialens wrote in its latest alert: IBC only collects records of violent civilian deaths reported by two different (mainly Western) media sources operating in Iraq. Epidemiologists report that this type of study typically captures around 5 per cent of deaths during high levels...
When is a body count important?
2007-09-02 05:32:00 When it supports your position, of course. So, Bush used a body count in his speech and the Associated Press' headline is a body count: BAGHDAD - Civilian deaths rose in August to their second-highest monthly level this year, according to figures compiled Saturday by The Associated Press. That raises questions about whether U.S. strategy is working days before Congress receives landmark reports that will decide the course of the war. It's also very important to left blogs in general. And, I imagine that right ones would trumpet death statistics favorable to them. But, are body counts the best way to make decisions? What if our cause is important and just? What if it's not and we had few casualties? Body counts can be illustrative, but let's use other measures as well. Remember, he who lives by body counts, dies by body counts.

Body-Count Math
2007-05-19 00:58:00 One of the main arguments used by those who postulate that Iraq has been lost, is that civilian and military body-counts have not subsided. The argument is compelling because of its emotional impact ? anyone with an ounce of empathy feels great pain for the lost soldiers and the Iraqi civilian victims. Yet, in historic ...

The Lancet Scandal: The ?Iraq body count? article fraud
2007-03-05 16:21:02 Lancet is one of the most esteemed medical journals in the world. So when last October the Lancet published an article claiming that 650 000 Iraqis had died as a result of the US intervention–a number that was tenfold above estimates of the UN or of other organizations–some people questioned the findings, and not only ...
Body counting is no fun
2005-12-09 14:20:00 From the Island Packet of Hilton Head, South Carolina, another fluff-coated gush upon corpses in comic books:- "Infinite Crisis" continues in DC's mainstream superhero titles, and the body count is growing higher as Superman, Batman and other major characters undergo some startling changes. If you're confused, DC is releasing "Rann-Thanagar War" and "Villains United" ($12.99 each), TPBs collecting two of the four miniseries leading up to the Crisis. (The other two, "OMAC Project" and "Day of Vengeance," are already available.)Sorry, not interested. Been there, done that. Not to mention that "body count" is nothing new either, nor is it any fun. This sensationalizing of death in comics is getting old and tired by now.- Marvel's own crisis continues this month in a number of books, detailing how the Marvel Universe is going to look now that most mutants (including many X-Men) have lost their powers. A highlight is "Son of M" No. 1 ($2.99), following the de-powered Pietro Maximoff, ... |
