GAO Sustains Boeing's Aerial Refueling Tanker Protest and Cites Significant
2008-06-19 16:25:00
The GAO announced yesterday that it had decided to sustain Boeing’s protest of the Air Force’s selection of Northrop Grumman (who included the European company Airbus on its team) over Boeing for the $40 billion aerial tanker contract - a contract that could ultimately be worth $100 billion.  Considering the GAO’s history of denying most of the protests that come before it, today’s outcome is likely a surprise to the many who expected the Office to stand behind the Air Force’s source selection.  The much-discussed dispute has been waging since March 11, 2008 when Boeing filed its protest. Prior to this award, Boeing had been the Air Force’s only supplier of this type of aircraft for fifty years.   The actual sixty-nine page decision was filed under a protective order and has not yet been released. A public version will be made available once all interested parties review it and identify all sensitive information ...

Boeing Fires High-Energy Chemical Laser
2008-05-19 23:44:00
According to a report from the New Mexico Business Weekly, Boeing has for the first time fired its high-energy laser weapon from a C-130H aircraft, demonstrating its ability to precisely hit targets on the ground with minimal collateral damage. I haven't seen any video footage of the event, but that's okay. I saw the movie a long time ago. One has to wonder if they went through extra precautions to make sure that Val Kilmer was nowhere near the site of their test....
Boeing (BA): A bet on the 'dream machine'
2008-05-16 07:00:00
"The Dreamliner is set to become the most significant new product to hit the airline industry in decades," says emerging markets specialist Horacio Marquez (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2016).The- contributing editor to The Money Map Report (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2016) states, "Of course, the company that’s making the dream machine is Boeing (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ba) (NYSE: BA (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=ba)), which is consider as compelling an investment as I have ever seen.""In the world of manufacturing, there’s nothing more powerful than a technological leap and right now there’s something similar going on in the commercial airplane market. "Airlines are facing some stiff demands. First, passenger traffic and cargo loads are projected to soar, as are the number of long range flights. Yet soaring oil costs are pressuring carriers to cut back on fuel."Second, carriers ...

Funny how things can change. I was in the slough of despond yesterday, and today things seem much perkier. (Thank you all for your kind comments & emails). Prescient Dressed & Pressed is so right: cake is always the answer. Or, in my case, a roll of pre-made Tollhouse cookie dough.I managed to sleep before 3am, and consequently am awake bright & early today without feeling that my half my day has been wasted. It’s a beautiful day, not as hot as yesterday (knocking 80F) but clear & fresh. I’m revelling in the humidity-free sunshine. It won’t be many weeks before what equates now to a perfect English summer’s day turns in to an urban sweat bath.Just when I was at my grumpiest yesterday afternoon, wonderful, uplifting O rang to get a number and then,, on the spur of the moment invited me to take the place of her husband (away on business) at the theatre that night. Presidential passport breach: Why do contractors have easy access to sensit
2008-03-23 19:25:00
The accessing of private passport-based travel data of all three Presidential candidates by contractors working for the State Department has finally galvanized Capitol Hill to address the issue of privacy–something we’ve been begging them to do for years. Ron Wyden sums it up succinctly: “The Government Accountability Office has been warning about this problem for a decade. And it seems to me in this administration, there’s been pretty much a culture of disregard for privacy, and that’s part of the problem,” he said. Wyden may have been referring to a 2006 report from the GAO documenting the lack of oversight in sharing Social Security Numbers with contractors working for various federal agencies, including the IRS and the FBI, as well as within the private sector. It is but one of many reports the investigative agency has issued documenting the serious vulnerabilities our government’s mad drive to outsource its functions to the private sect...

Boeing Files Protest Over USAF Tanker Contract
2008-03-12 03:35:00
As my readers know, I’ve been following the developments in the U.S. Air Force contract which was awarded to Northrop Grummon Corp and its partner Europeean Aeronautic Defense and Space Co (EADS). My interest mainly concerns the effect this contract could have on not only Mobile Alabama, but also Pensacola Florida and other areas of the Gulf Coast.  Los Angeles-based Northrop and its bidding partner, EADS North America, won the 179-plane contract on Feb. 29. The companies plan to assemble their tankers in a pair of new plants at the Brookley Field Industrial Complex, creating 1,500 jobs. For more on this contract award, read my previous article on Pensacola Real Estate News. And the saga continues. Boeing today officially filed a protest over the award of the contract.  “Our team has taken a very close look at the tanker decision and found serious flaws in the process that we believe warrant appeal,” Jim McNerney, chairman and chief executive officer of Boei...
The continuing air tanker saga
2008-03-11 19:10:00
Boeing's loss of the Air Force tanker contract continues to make waves. Perhaps the Northrup Grumman/EADS proposal is better. Perhaps the embarrassment that resulted from Boeing's unethical conduct in 2003 was a factor. That said this could still hurt John McCain:McCain advisers lobbied for European plane maker WASHINGTON (AP) -- Top current advisers to Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign last year lobbied for a European plane maker that beat Boeing to a $35 billion Air Force tanker contract, taking sides in a bidding fight that McCain has tried to referee for more than five years. Two of the advisers gave up their lobbying work when they joined McCain's campaign. A third, former Texas Rep. Tom Loeffler, lobbied for the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. while serving as McCain's national finance chairman.[.....]"The aesthetics are not good, especially since he is an advocate of reform and transparency," said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the aerospace consultin...
McCain Advisors Lobbied For Airbus Deal Over Boeing
2008-03-11 09:36:00
In a case of "WFT!?!" Senator John McCain's advisors lobbied for the Airbus $35 billion Air Force tanker contract over Boeing. That's an outrage and McCain should say "I'm sorry" to the people of Washington State.

More on the air tanker deal
2008-03-02 18:18:00
Below Jazz discussed the bru ha ha over the contract awarded to Northrup Grumman and EADS for the next generation of air tankers. As I said in the comments section there is a little more to the story than free trade. If they were going to use an existing airframe, the most economical thing to do, there were two choices, Boeing and EADS (Airbus). By all rights Boeing should not have even been able to bid on the deal and here is why: Unethical conductIn May 2003, the US Air Force announced it would lease 100 KC-767 tankers to replace the oldest 136 of its KC-135s. The 10 year lease would give the USAF the option to purchase the aircraft at the end of the contract. In September 2003, responding to critics who argued that the lease was vastly more expensive than an outright purchase, the DOD announced a revised lease of 74 aircraft and purchase of 26.In December 2003, the Pentagon announced the project was to be frozen while an investigation of allegations of corruption by one of its fo...
Boeing 777 pilot fired after low pass
2008-02-28 02:20:00
A Cathay Pacific Airline pilot who made a low fly by (in aviation lingo, he basically "buzzed" the control tower, in reference to the shudder that is felt in nearby buildings by such a maneuver) after taking delivery of a brand new Boeing 777 in Seattle was fired.Oh come on, the guy was just having fun with his new toy. I mean boys will be boys, we never grow up.So what's the big deal here? There weren't any passengers on board and the plane was brand, spanking new so there was no chance there'd be a mechanical malfunction during the fly by.Oh well, blame it on the 9/11 terror attacks. Since then, the world has lost all innocence and the sense of fun, especially when comes to planes and flying. Here's the video composite of photos taken as the pilot buzzed the control tower:

Pentagon could award big radio contract this month
2008-02-11 00:40:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon will soon choose either Boeing Co or Lockheed Martin Corp to design a next-generation radio system for aircraft, ships and ground stations, a deal potentially worth billions of dollars to the winning bidder. Award of the Joint Tactical Radio System contract could come as soon as the end of February, according to Leo Conboy, program manager for Boeing's team. The Pentagon has promised a decision by the end of the first quarter. Defense analysts say the contract for system design and development of the Airborne Maritime and Fixed Station (AMF) segment of the program will total $800 million to $1.2 billion. A later production contract could translate into business deals valued at $10 billion or more over the long term, they say. The tactical radio system is a family of advanced software-based communications that will replace current radio equipment throughout the U.S. military. It will provide secure Internet-like capabilities and ...

Zero G
2008-02-07 23:38:00
How It Works?Weightless Flight (also known as Parabolic Flight) is achieved aboard ZERO-G's Boeing 727 aircraft named G-FORCE ONE. Weightlessness is achieved by flying G-FORCE ONE through a parabolic flight maneuver. Specially trained pilots fly these maneuvers between approximately 24,000 and 34,000 feet altitude. Each parabola takes 10 miles of airspace to perform and lasts approximately one minute from start to finish. The maneuver is somewhat like a roller coaster in that the plane is initially pulled up to approximately 45 degrees 'nose high'. Next the plane is 'pushed over' the top to reach the zero-gravity segment of the parabolas. For the next 25 - 30 seconds everything in the plane is weightless. At approximately 30 degrees 'nose low' a gentle pull-out is started which allows the Flyers to ...
Boeing Factory Creates Clouds
2008-02-07 22:39:00
The Boeing Factory in Everett, north of Seattle, the largest factory by volume in the world is so massive that it started to develop its own weather system forcing them to design a custom air conditioning system.A state-of-the-art air circulation system had to be installed inside the monolithic manufacturing plant because clouds - the product of accumulated warm air and moisture - were forming inside.I don't really know why I found that interesting enough to share. Thanks for your patience. I lived in Seattle in the 1980s when Microsoft was just a start up that nobody had heard of and Boeing was the only game in town. Their massive factories were interesting to look at for just that reason. The scale of their facilities compared to everything else around was a bit surreal.I got a feel for the scale of the 747s when I used to commute between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. When you got on in Singapore it was from an air bridge. In Kuala Lumpur in the old airport, you would walk out to t...
Boeing, Tata unit sign components deal for 787
2008-02-07 12:59:00
MUMBAI (Reuters) - Boeing Co has signed an agreement with TAL Manufacturing Solutions Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Ltd, for making structural components for the 787 Dreamliner, the companies said. TAL will build floor beams for the 787 using advanced titanium and composite materials, resulting in a "significant weight saving", they said in a joint statement on Wednesday. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The floor beams will be made at TAL's new facility in Nagpur and shipped to Japan, Italy and the United States for further assembly. "We believe this agreement has the potential to develop into a more broad-based alliance that would enable both organisations to utilise the most competitive resources," Ravi Kant, chairman of TAL and managing director of Tata Motors, was cited as saying. Boeing Commercial Airplanes estimates India will need aircraft worth about $86 billion over the next 20 years.
