It?s Time to Dump U.S. Treasury Bonds ? Again
2011-12-06 20:01:00
Potential double-top forming at the long-term significant resistance level at its late 2008 high First let’s make sure we understand the basics of bonds. Bonds are a form of debt. When a company or a government needs to borrow money it can borrow from banks and pay interest on the loan, or it can borrow from investors by issuing bonds and paying interest on the bonds. One advantage of bonds to the borrower is that a bank will usually require payments on the principle of the loan in addition to the interest, so that the loan gradually gets paid off. Bonds allow the borrower to only pay the interest while having the use of the entire . . . → Read More: It?s Time to Dump U.S. Treasury Bonds ? Again
Risk Sentiment Goes Out the Window with Italian Bonds

Source: ForexYard Risk Sentiment Goes Out the Window with Italian Bonds The trigger for yesterday's slide in the EUR was when LCH Clearnet raised its margin requirements for Italian bonds, forcing some banks to put up additional capital or sell their positions. Most chose the latter and thus pushed up the yield on 10-year Italian BTPs above 7% to a new EMU record. The EUR collapsed with Italian bond prices, ending the period of consolidation that the FX markets have seen since early last week. English law in the American colonies could get a bit florid on the topic of illegitimate children. Understanding Contractor Bonds
2011-06-22 17:57:00
Guest Post By: Kristen Bradley The U.S. boasts a huge contract bond market as federal, state and local government agencies all utilize contract bond law to regulate professionals who work in the construction industry. Inevitably, some contracting firms find themselves unable to qualify for these bonds because they do not have the financial stability needed to back them up. This denies them access to working on publicly funded construction projects. Contractors who cannot find a surety provider that's willing to issue them necessary bonds might complain that contract bond requirements are too strict and difficult to fulfill. Their purpose, however, is to deter unqualified and financially unstable contractors from working on projects for which they might not be qualified. Contractor bonding helps stabilize the industry in a number of legally enforceable ways. Contract Bond Protection Contract bonds work to protect the best interests of the project owners and government agenc...
The Masters, Barry Bonds and More: A Book Worth Checking Out This Weekend
2011-04-07 17:10:00
This week presents some wonderful sports options to fans of any game. The Masters begins, the NHL regular season ends, the White Sox host their home opener on Thursday, the Cubs take their act on the road for the first time and the Bulls continue working to secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, baseball's all-time home run champion* - Barry Bonds - continues to stand trial for lying to a federal grand jury. While it certainly isn't my nature to take time out away from the games on the field to recommend something to read, there's a book that came out in 2010 that could be a fascinating read for sports fans....
Illinois bonds worse than corporate junk
2011-02-24 17:39:00
Illinois credit ratings are the equal of corporate junk bonds, yet Illinois had to pay significantly higher interest rates to lure investors to buy the crap. According to the Wall Street Journal: Illinois officials were forced to promise a yield that is about two percentage points higher than was paid by companies with similar credit ratings in recent bond offerings. The state's bond rating is one of the lowest among the 50 states. What this means is that there are fools out there with cash who are willing to take a big risk for a higher return. When Illinois defaults on these bonds, let us not hear the administration of Gov. Pat Quinn or the bondholders beg the federal government...

In this Sunday's PARADE section of the Chicago Tribune, the article Do Steroid Users Have a Place in the Hall of Fame? raises a question that holds some heated debate within a variety of sports venues, something it will do for some time to come. PARADE.com even has an online poll, asked from a different slant than their article title (be careful of this), for individuals to vote one way or the other. And the current statistical trend seems to be weighing heavily on the YES they should NOT be allowed into the Hall of Fame side of the equation.

In Bob Nightengale's article Panel Part V: MLB must stay ahead of drug curve (USA Today), he infers that Major League Baseball needs to do much more to "stay ahead of the drug curve" if they are truly interested in keeping the sport clean. He reveals the USA Today's eight-person committee's suggestion "that MLB formulate a panel of medical, technological and pharmaceutical experts, which would report its findings to the commissioner's office and players union." That it would be this group's responsibility to make decisions on what is considered illegal performance enhancement and what would not.
War bonds and War taxes to pay for U.S. conflicts
2009-12-17 23:38:00
Let’s get real here for a minute. How many of you really believe that our troops will be home next year? 2011? 2012? 2020? Remember Germany? Japan? South Korea? When do U.S. Troops ever truly come home? What’s worse is that these conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and, from the look of things, soon to be Pakistan and Iran are all conflicts that we could and, in hindsight, should have stayed out of. The criminals that populate too much of the U.S. Congress are now actually considering funding the “wars” with new taxes and war bonds. Outrage. That’s all that comes into my mind. Ron Paul has said it best more than once: Bring all the troops home immediately. How Canada Savings Bonds and Canada Premium Bonds Work
2009-08-25 12:30:00
A reader emailed me asking about my thoughts on Canada Savings Bonds. Basically, she has been withdrawing a portion of her paycheck every two weeks to purchase some CSB’s, but really doesn’t know how they work.   Most of the details can be obtained from the official CSB website, but I will dissect the info and summarize the main points. So lets get down to the basics. What is a Canada Savings Bond (CSB) or a Canada Premium Bond (CPB)? The Canadian government offers both CSB’s and CPB’s once a year and can be purchased within a certain date range (Oct -> April).  These bonds are very similar to a GIC where they provide a guarantee on the capital invested with various options on redeeming. The difference between the CSB and CPB is in their rates and when you can redeem them.  Of course, the greater the redemption restrictions, the higher the interest rate. Here is the official definition of a CSB: A Canada Savings Bond (CSB) is a safe and secure investm...
Pay Illinois legislators in downgraded state bonds
2009-08-01 16:58:00
Now here's a great idea from Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Proft. Noting that Illinois bonds have been downgraded thanks to irresponsible and incompetent state legislators, he suggests that instead of getting paid in dollars, they should be forced to take their salary in state bonds. As good as the idea is, however, I don't think it goes far enough. They should be paid in worthless confederate dollars. Like that currency, Illinois legislators, who are leading the state into bankruptcy, are totally worthless....

Elliott wave's theory on bonds
2009-04-15 15:00:00
"Treasury bonds are building a historic top," says Robert Prechter, technical expert and pioneer in Elliott Wave analysis. In his The Elliott Wave Forecast he offers his outlook on bonds."T-bond prices have been going up for 28 years, since 1981, when the rate of inflation peaked."People were afrid of T-bonds in 1981, and today is is perhaps the world's most popular investment (formerly it was real estate). This shift in  desire is entirely normal and consistent with a maturing bull market."We have seen recent manic buying in the Treasury bond market on what appears to be news of a sure thing: the Fed is going to buy T-bonds."Market sentiment is consistent with a peaking process, and it is difficult to imagine more 'comforting' news than the supposedly all-powerful Fed buying an investment."Indeed, we recently saw the biggest one-day drop in 21 years in terms of percentage change in yield. Larger one-day moves occured the day of th...
Government bonds: An 'inverse' strategy

"You may be surprised to learn we're in the midst of one of the greatest financial bubbles in history," states Nick Vardy (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2849), referring to long-term government bonds. In his Global Bull Market Alert (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2849), he explains, "This bubble isn't motivated by greed, but by fear." "Savvy investors know that anytime there are extremes in financial markets, there are also opportunities to profit. And the Rydex Inverse Government Long Bond Strategy Inverse...

Bonds: The next bubble?
2009-02-11 06:00:00
"Bonds have soared in recent months due to panic and safety," suggest Mary Anne and Pamela Aden (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2820 ). In The Aden Forecast (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2820 ), they offer an in-depth look at a potential bond bubble."As the credit crisis worsened last Fall, the economy and banking system were literally on the brink. With everything so uncertain, it seemed as though there was nowhere to hide. So investors stormed into bonds and short-term Treasury bills and notes."Backed by the full faith and credit of the United States, these instruments are considered the safest, or so the general thinking goes. It didn’t matter that T-Bills and some of the other short-term bills were paying a zero percent return."Investors just wanted safety, and that applies to both foreign and domestic investors. Some are calling this the latest new bubble. In other words, Treasuries replaced the commodities bubble and the real e...

Learn How To Make Money From Investing In Premium Bonds
2008-12-26 04:41:00
Premium bonds were introduced by Harold Macmillan in the year 1965. Premium bonds are government bonds and the prices of these bonds are more than their par value. According to the National Savings and Investments, these bonds are held by near about 23 million people. These bonds are considered to be the easiest and the safest means of saving money. These bonds ensure the bondholders that their investments are totally secured. However, premium bonds are generally of two types, callable bonds and non callable bonds.A person making an investment in Premium bonds basically makes investments in the government. The government does not pay the bondholders interest; instead they pay the money into a fund known as the prize fund and also provide the bondholder an opportunity to win tax-free prizes. A person investing in these bonds should remember that these bonds cannot be held jointly by two people. Besides, these bonds cannot be transferred from one person to another. However, the main a...

Are Investment Bonds a Viable Investment Option?
2008-12-22 06:59:00
Your bank or institution will give you bonds in exchange for you lending them cash, they issue bonds that promise to pay you back in the future tense including interest.Bonds are they risk free?A bond has low risk attributes but it is not risk free. If you purchase corporate bonds, that essentially means you are purchasing a claim to their assets. Just like a conventional person, big organizations tend to take on debt, which must be paid back; they take on debt in trust to profit from it. It is possible for them to take on too much debt resulting in them not being able to pay it back. Just like a conventional person not being able to make their credit payments. If a company files for bankruptcy they will be unable to payoff the bonds that you bought from them. This means that you as the investor can in theory lose the bonds that you invested in them, fortunately bonds are rarely lost this way.If you invest in bonds, you can sell them to the market at any time. Just like stock bonds ...

For stable income: An ETF for muni bonds

Bailout blues? 'Buy bonds'

"Bond funds are the foundation that steadies your portfolio.""While the Fed and the Treasury work to bail out a trillion dollars in debt, other governments around the planet seems to be jumping on board this train; similar deals are being cut from the UK to Russia to Japan and beyond."The result is a big surge of short-covering and rampant buying as the markets trade and party like it's 1999 again. But is this a good thing?"Although it might satisfy the political agendas of government leaders, these moves do pretty much nothing to restore normal risk and reward characteristics that make for a productive free market system."Meanwhile, bonds are what continue to perform.
