Rebooting
2008-05-11 19:06:00
This was an incredibly fast read. Like many of Yehuda Berg's books, this was easy to digest and very inspirational. Berg's books are really accessible as your knowledge of Kabbalah doesn't have to be that great. He takes simple ideas and breaks them down in ways you wouldn't really think of.I may not be depressed right now, but the book has some helpful tools to prepare myself the next time I feel like I'm going down the wrong path. The book heavily focuses on being in the now. We're so bogged down by our past and worrying about our future, we fail to take the time to appreciate where we are in life. Letting the past remain in the past. I've already started applying some of the principals from this book to my everyday life, and I can already feel a difference. It's helping me to lighten up and to stop being so reactionary. Take the time to sew the seeds in your present, and you'll be much happier with your future.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Kabbalah...
Generation X: Tales From An Accelerated Culture
2008-04-29 19:35:00
I love Douglas Coupland. I've read almost all of his books and loved each one of them. It was only a matter of time before I finally got to 'Generation X'...and I'd have to say I'm disappointed. I mean, it's still the same, insightful Coupland wit that has driven all his other books, but I found it to be too pretentious and condescending. Coupland's social criticism, while always sharp, still managed to walk the fine line between snobby and vulnerable. This time around, the three main characters, Andy, Dag, and Claire spent the entire time on their high horses looking down at the rest of the world as they decide to spend their lives out of "normal civilization" by living in the Mojave desert. Unlike other Coupland books, I was sad to see so little effort given to character development for the trio of desert dwellers, as most of the book revolves around their story telling. Three pretentious Gen X-er's who have nothing better to do than lay around the pool of their condo's, ...

Oprah's Book Club - A New Earth
2008-04-10 17:27:00
I've been hearing this book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, being mentioned every time I watch Oprah. I haven't read the book yet but one thing is for sure, if this book will in any way contradict the Bible or exalt "self" instead of God, I think it's not going to even be on my list of must reads. I've read on one blog - Reformation Nation this - New Age guru Oprah Winfrey pushing New Age author Eckhart Tolle's book "A New Earth". Oh-oh, I think red lights are flashing and it's telling me to... dump it?
The Book Club: April's Update
2008-04-01 16:23:00
I am really exited that my husband has asked me to take over the reigns of the book club here at the Baptist Muse. I love to read and can't wait to get into this month's book. The Book Club is located at the forum portion of the website. Last month we started the book club by reading "By Duty Bound" by Ezell Ware Jr. This was an excellent book dealing with two men who were enemies because of their race but then shot down over Vietnam and left alone stranded for three weeks they became brothers. The Book Club is a place for Christians to encourage one another to read and discuss books. Each month a different book will be chosen and we will work to stimulate our discussion and learning. The books will be chosen by the users of this site through a very simple process that will allow everyone to participate. To read about that process, click here. The book for April is "Because They Hate" by Brigette Gabriel. We would like to thank Kate Plourde for recommending this book. Each month ...

Tips for reading Opray Winfrey's book club-"A New Earth: Awakening to Your
2008-03-12 02:59:00
People with severe depression have a very difficult time concentrating reading, watching TV or even following a conversation.   Are you having a difficult time reading A New Earth?  Don't be too  hard on yourself. Oprah's webcast with author Eckhart Tolle offered  five suggestions that will help you ease into your reading experience: Be patient and easy on yourself as you read. Have two markers on hand while you read. Highlight favorite sentences with one color and lines that confuse you with another. Don't worry about skipping portions—flag them and come back to them later. As you read deeper into the book, some of the passages that may have confused you earlier will be clarified. You may be surprised to discover how quickly you will be able to understand terms and concepts. Use the practices in the Awakening Exercises part of the website as you read. The author, Eckhart Tolle, says A New Earth is about you. "It will change your state of con...

2008-02-24 14:05:00
As many of you have probably already noticed, yesterday I launched The Baptist Muse Forum. I would like to invite you all to swing by and check it out. One of the key features within the forum is the section entitled "Book Club." I have set up a system where we as a community can select a book each month to read.I'm am very excited about the book club and am looking forward to seeing who will join in with me in reading a book each month. I invite you all to jump in and read some of the books that will begin showing up in this forum.According to the rules that I set up, we should spend the first three weeks in February selecting our book for March. Since, however, the month of February is almost over, I am going to select a book of interest to me (How self serving, right?) to get things started.Of course, next week we will begin the selection process for April's book. I invite you all to get involved. I am not going to be the one selecting the books in the future. Everyone else ...

The highly anticipated follow-up to the 2,000,000 copy bestselling inspirational book, The Power of NowWith his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived "in the now." In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence. The Power of Now was a question-and-answer handbook. The Jane Austen Book Club: DVD, Blu-ray Movie Review (2008)
2008-02-09 17:32:00
"The Jane Austen Book Club" DVD, Blu-rayBased on Karen Joy Fowler’s 2004 best-seller, this likable if formulaic movie follows five women (Maria Bello, Emily Blunt, Maggie Grace, Kathy Baker and Amy Brenneman) and one sci-fi-loving guy (Hugh Dancy) who come together to read six Austen books. The idea is that within those books are guides to leading one’s life, with the characters naturally coming to find themselves in Austen’s books. So, once again, the enduring Austen proves she’s fit for contemporary consumption. As one character in the movie notes, "You can’t read these novels without wondering whether she has a little thing for the naughty boys."Good point.Another character claims that "reading Jane is a freakin’minefield."Well, maybe after a bottle of wine and a heated conversation with friends, which is what this movie is all about.Rated PG-13. How Your Book Club Can Use Bookwise To Save Money!
2008-02-04 21:32:00
Do you belong to a book club? Book clubs are awesome, but one hard thing about them is making sure that every person in the club is able to acquire and read the book. Often book clubs choose very popular books that are hard to find in libraries... and even if you do find it in the library, you may not be able to keep it long enough to bring it with you to the next book club meeting! I have a simple and convenient solution to this problem. The solution is Bookwise! Here's how it works. 1. One person in your book club joins Bookwise as a Preferred Customer. There is no membership fee, so if you want to do it a different way, all of your members can sign up individually!2. Choose a book that your book club would like to discuss. There are many ways to do this... either at each meeting the whole group can browse Bookwise together to find a book, or individual members can take turns browsing at home and finding a book they'd like everyone to read.3. The person who is a member orders th...

the innkblotz book club #1 - "The Glass Castle"
2008-01-31 02:38:00
Perhaps this is old news, but I had to share it with you.Last week, I finished reading "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. I can honestly say that I have never felt such a mixture of emotions by reading one book. She describes her childhood and her parents' alternative lifestyles - the constant moves from town to town, her father's brilliance marred by alcoholism, and her mother's moods (which seem to be bipolar disorder) and unwillingness to be an authority figure for her kids.Sounds like pretty standard memoir fare, but what is really attractive to me was this combination of emotions elicited by the book. In some parts, the extent of the psychological issues makes you so angry that you want to wring the parents' necks (for example, how the kids would starve for days at a time because the father drank the money or the mother was unwilling to cook for them). But then there were times when you would feel sympathetic for even the parents as they tried to make little moments spe...

During the past week, I've become comment buddies with the fine folk over at the Fantasy Baseball blog. (We Blogger users gotsta stick together.) And today they were nice enough to link to my 2008 Beasts and Busts post. In return, I'm sticking them on our Recommended Sites list -- not because of any I'll-scratch-your-back kind of deal, but because I already planned on printing out their 2008 Sleepers list and stuffing it into my fantasy magazine sometime before draft day. Actually, all of their 2008 prep lists are pretty damn good ... and, best of all, free! So give them a look if you get a chance. (Though please don't forget your first true love -- us!)

Vino Italiano: Wine Book Club Tickler #1
2008-01-19 03:41:00
Allowing for the inevitable procrastination but bearing in mind that we're tackling 500 pages in just a handful of weeks, I thought I'd give y'all a nudge. Many of you who've expressed an interest in the Wine Book Club may have also participated in this week's installment of Wine Blogging Wednesday, which focused on the white wines of Friuli. So I feel inclined to suggest that, by now, we should all have at the very least read through both the "Basics" section and the first regional chapter (conveniently, on Friuli-Venezia Giulia) of Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy. Any thoughts on the text thus far?

Wine Book Club
2008-01-05 00:41:00
I thought I would let everyone know that there is a new wine group forming on the internet, courtesy of Dr. Debs of Good Wine Under $20. Dr. Debs recently contacted a group of wine bloggers with the idea to start a Wine Book Club on the idea of Wine Blogging Wednesday. The premise is this: One wine blogger, every other month, will choose a book for everyone to read. You'll read the book and post your review and the host will round-up all the entries for the month. I like the slightly less ambitious schedule of every other month, as it might be difficult to keep up a monthly schedule, though, who knows, in the future it could become more frequent. You can read all the details over on Good Wine Under $20, and you can head on over to McDuff's Food and Wine Trail to read the details on our first book, Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy. David has kindly offered to serve as the first WBC host.
Announcing the Wine Book Club: First Edition
2008-01-03 16:27:00
Wine blogging is already changing the way that many people around the world research, read and learn about all things wine related. Why not up the ante then by creating a community that helps to strengthen that trend by reading together, blogging together and, in the process, learning together? That’s just what I think Dr. Debs had in mind when she proposed the idea of a Wine Book Club to a modestly sized group of equally zealous wine bloggers. Based roughly on the model of Wine Blogging Wednesday (WBW), the Wine Book Club (WBC) will be an on-line forum (or meme, if you prefer) where wine and food bloggers, as well as any other interested participants, can – and hopefully will – come together every other month to read, discuss and critique a selected wine book. As Deb was kind enough to take care of the bulk of the nitty-gritty, behind the scenes work needed to get the ball rolling, I figured the least I could do was to step up and host our first meeting. So, without furt...

The Jane Austen Book club - Trailer
2007-09-17 17:43:00
The Trailer to the filming of Karen J. Fowlers novel The Jane Austen Book club is on-line. By the novel I was not so inspired (me actually only the beginning, if is described, pleased what the individual persons in Jane Austens novels sees). But the Trailer looks completely okay. Apparently a few changes were made.

Book Club
2007-09-12 14:02:00
The ladies of my neighborhood book club met last night. We discussed “Sugar Street,” the final volume of Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy, a history of El- Sayed Ahmed Abdel-Gawwad and his family. Against a backdrop of social and political detail, the work spans three generations, and shows the intimate relationships between family members. I found the account of the search for faith of youngest son, Kamal, very touching.Throughout all three volumes, the patriarch’s power erodes. Mahfouz records with a critical eye the passage of time: he follows the family through the 1919 Revolution, the era of Saad Zaglul, the British occupation, and the reign of Fouad. The author has written elsewhere that "The cruelty of memory manifests itself in remembering what is dispelled in forgetfulness." Click the title for an interview with Naguib Mahfouz by writer and journalist Mohamed Salmawy.

2007-09-08 04:06:00
Is a stunning announcement, Osama bin Laden has decided to give up terrorism and start the OBL Book of the Month Club, a book mail order service featuring his favorite authors at discount prices. In an interview with Progressive Book Monthly, Osama said: Usama Bin Laden promotes book club on Rosie O'Donnell show. I realized that I didn't have to kill babies to be relevant. I might put my name on a couple of bombings just for some terrorist cred at Yale; kids dig that stuff during teach-ins, but I can reach more people with the written word. Besides, caves are cold and the cell reception is awful. OBL Book Club members will receive four books for $1.99 and "you just have to promise to buy one more book at regular price," said bin Laden, "and if you affix this sticker you get a telephone shaped like a stick of dynamite. Makes a great gift" Bin Laden plans an extensive e-mail campaign, "We have this great opening line, 'George Bush's Crusade against people of color, the exploi...
