Nobody has a favorite used bookstore? I guess I'll...
2008-04-04 16:35:00
Nobody has a favorite used bookstore? I guess I'll have to add my 2¢ then:Aveanue Victor Hugo-now closed. Back when it was at it's origonal location on Newbury St. Boston, I spent many hours there browsing the photography books. It was there I purchased nearly the whole Time Life book series on photography, from those I learned to develope film, print photos and was introduced to the works of Diane Arbus, Man Ray, etc. At Victor Hugo the shelves went from floor to ceiling. They played jazz (or NPR) on the radio and, at the time had a big yellow cat who lived there. They closed a few years ago, the rents got too high. It's a shame. Their website shows a grey cat:http://www.avenuevictorhugo-books.com/home.php3Across the street from Victor Hugo is the Trident Bookstore, still in business. They're a new bookstore, but I think they did carry some used or discounted books years ago. I used to hang out in there reading, they had an extensive selection of magazines and a tasty cafe. At ...

Bookstores charting own strategy for choosing bestsellers
2008-01-25 00:00:00
Amid a prolonged recession in the publishing industry, bookstores are taking some drastic steps to reduce their dependence on publishers and map out their own strategies, such as the fostering of writers to produce bestsellers and handwritten cards advertising them.In 2004, clerks at bookstores across the country voted for the first time to pick the winner of a ''bookstore grand prize'' which turned out to be a success. Since then, the books of such prizewinners have become bestsel ...

The Jedi In The Bookstore
2008-01-03 08:52:00
I would like to relay an incident that occurred--oh let's say--about two months ago. Now, I have had public encounters with so-called Jedi Knights before. If you cannot recall the Wal-Mart incident, you can read about it here. However, nothing prepared me for what happened at the Zephyr bookstore. My wife was getting her haircut and I had a couple of hours to kill. I headed over to Zephyr to peruse their fine selection of used books. I browsed and browsed, flipped through numerous pages, and finally settled on three books.I placed them under my arm and continued to meander through the store. I moved towards the back of the store; here, you'll find a small counter that the store owners converted into a quasi coffee shop. Round tables with uncomfortable wooden chairs pepper the store--a coffee shop indeed.I digress.Next to the coffee area is the Juvenile section. I began glancing through the titles to see if anything would be of interest for my wife. Not that she reads at the middle ...

In Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto yesterday (and maybe Vancouver, I'm not positive) the Chapters/Indigos stores were the scene of boycott pickets. The picket, as always, was organized by NION-Ottawa and Canpalnet-Ottawa. Some of the people who joined us had already been marching for an hour in an event organized by NOWAR-PAIX as follows:NO TO WAR ON IRANDon't nuke Iran HARPER SPEAK OUT: NO TO U.S. WAR ON IRAN!BREAK THE SILENCE! Will Libraries And Bookstores Survive The Internet Age?

The following is an excellent article from Pajamas Media. Will libraries and bookstores survive the Internet age? Richard Fernandez examines what the efforts by Google and Microsoft to digitize the world’s collection of books mean for readers and whether it is something to be celebrated or feared.Read more .... My Comment: the following is a reproduction of what was my comment to the article. An excellent article that accurately summarizes certain developments that are occurring with online libraries. I should know because I am the founder of Bookyards ( http://www.bookyards.com ), a library that has been online for the past eight years and is one of the first to explore the commercial possibilities for libraries on the internet. The only thing that I can add to the article are the following …. a historical perspective, and pointing out certain trends that are not explained in your article. When we first started there were only a handful of libraries, with a limited readership. Off the Shelf, Into the iPod: iTunes? Audio Bookstore

Music services such as iTunes come with a fringe benefit. They are becoming a deep repository for audiobooks. Another feel-good propaganda! Check your local bookstore!
2007-10-27 04:00:00
Well well well… Barisan Nasional has created another brand new feel-good propaganda to wins the hearts and minds of Malaysians yesterday. This time around they want to make Malaysians feel as if there is a big solidarity and friendship among their component parties. :-) Nice try. A very nice try, Barisan Nasional. I’m referring to that book published in honor of Dato’ Seri Samy Vellu by the MPH Group. The book was launched yesterday by Dato’ Seri Dr. Rais Yatim. I’m not that interested in the book really. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Samy Vellu. He has his shortcomings of course but we cannot deny the fact that he has done tremendous service to the nation. The major thing that poor Malaysians are not happy with him is his infamous and legendary toll hike announcements. Toll hikes are no small matter, folks. Toll hikes would affect other economic factors and soon you would see prices of other items and services being raised ...
Pick A Book Super Value Bookstore

Pick A Book Super Value Bookstore is another good place to buy pre-owned books. It's located inside the ELJ building of ABS-CBN, near Casa Ilongga (that's all I can say about directions, I'm not familiar with the interiors of ABS-CBN). It's a small bookstore but offers a wide range of selections in the categories of fiction, non-fiction, reference, puzzle books and children's books. They have books on photography, music, history, romance, and bestselling books. There are also some magazines but I'm not sure if they are back or new issues (forgot to check!).I think the cheapest price they have is 75php, while most hardbound books cost about less than 200php. Pretty good buys, especially if you really want the book or it's a rare find.Oh, and by the way, ABS-CBN Publishing is having a sale. Back issues of Metro, K (Kris's mag), Working Mom, Pink, Chalk, Maxim, Star Studio, hiM, and other magazines by ABS-CBN Publishing are sold at around 20-90php. Just a tip.Related posts: Boo...

Timbooktu: A little bookstore in Katipunan
2007-10-20 07:23:00
If you take a right on the alley after the Ateneo-Miriam overpass, you'll find a modest little bookstore called Timbooktu. It's actually just a stall along with the other newly-set up stalls in that area (mostly composed of small restaurants and eateries). You won't miss it when you're walking from KFC going to Bo's Coffee.Timbooktu sells used/pre-owned books, much like the style in Filbars, which is located nearby. The book products aren't at rock bottom prices but they're pretty cheap if you consider that they're in good condition. They're even wrapped in plastic, just like new ones in big bookstores; you can, however, request the salesperson to open it up so you could see what's inside.Book subjects range from children's books, fiction, self-help, classics, and philosophy. There are some good novels also that you won't normally find in bookstores that sell pre-owned books.
Gaza: Christian Bookstore Owner Was Tortured Before His Death
2007-10-16 20:58:00
The owner of a Christian bookstore in the Gaza Strip who was found dead this weekend was publicly beaten by Islamic gunmen accusing him of spreading Christianity, witnesses and Palestinian Arab security officials said. The body of Rami Ayyad, director of Gaza's only Christian bookstore, was found Sunday riddled with gunshot and stab wounds. He had been abducted the night before as he closed his shop, a local Christian group said.Gaza-based Islamic groups had accused Ayyad, a Baptist, of engaging in missionary activity. His bookstore was firebombed in April, and since then Ayyad had told relatives he was receiving death threats from Islamists.Witnesses and security officials associated with Hamas's so-called Executive Force told The New York Sun that Ayyad was publicly beaten a few blocks from his store before being shot to death. Hamas security sources said Ayyad's body showed signs of torture.

Great Hole in the Wall Bookstore
2007-09-10 07:31:00
A friend took me to this fantastic book store, outside of the outdoor Eastern market in DC. It's a cavern of used books at great prices, and the people there are super friendly. Yes, it's easier to order stuff off the internet, but there's something to say for just wandering through towers of books stacked alongside steep stairs. Here is why the bookstore rocks: 1. On a brutally hot Saturday, there was a punchbowl full of free, perfectly strong Margaritas for all those perusing. 2. There is a room called the Mystery room-- partially filled with Mystery novels and partially filled with random literary ephemera. Books that are somehow outside of other categories, along with great literary biographies and a ton of Anais Nin's diaries (she was the author Henry Miller's lover and an erotic fiction writer. Also almost all her diaries, over 8 at least, were published post-humously. Fantastic, excting, sexy stuff). 3. If the Mystery room doesn't intrigue you, there is also the Busines...
