On sleep, potty training and rainy day boredom...
2008-06-03 13:44:00
Having a two and a half year old is TIRING. The constant chatter, the 'mommy, he'p me?'s, all the energy... I've been limiting the amount of sleep he gets. I wake him at 7:30 in the morning and only let him sleep for an hour in the afternoon so this is probably why I'm feeling the strain lately. But sleeptimes were getting to be too much for me otherwise. Does anyone else do this? Elliot tried to go a few days without his nap, but towards dinner time he'd get quite whingey and grumpy so I don't feel as though he's ready for a nap-free day. Also, I've been feeling some (self-induced) pressure to start potty training Elliot. Quite a few of his (all younger) friends are already or in the process of potty training. But I'm still not sure how to start and if he'd be ready for it. I'm not sure I'M ready either, but if you have any advice or tips, PLEASE do share. Portable potties or straight onto the toilet? Straight into underwear or Pull-ups? Too many decisions....

Boredom and attention
2008-03-30 19:57:00
Our natural reaction to boredom is to find something different to do. We look for something more exciting, more engaging. Although there are definitely times when this is appropriate, often this attitude makes our problems worse. Boredom is caused by a restless mind, a mind that is unable to stay with an activity. We live in a society where we are engaged in constant stimulation: while waiting in a supermarket queue we have magazines to browse and text messages to send, not to mention the constant chatter of thoughts in our head. The unfortunate result of this is that our minds have become so used to stimulation that they cannot tolerate its lack. Furthermore, the more we indulge these impulses for stimulation, the greater our need becomes. Therefore, despite the widely varied activities in which we now engage, boredom in society is prevalent. How do we counter this state of mind that so easily facilitates boredom? The solution is not to go out and find new things to do, but rather...

Free The Childen From Boredom!
2008-03-17 14:05:00
The head of the body responsible for monitoring teaching standards in Great Britain will make an impassioned plea today for relesing children in schools from the stranglehold of the national curriculum and give teachers the freedom to decide what should be taught. Keith Bartley, chief executive of the General Teaching Council, (GTC) will warn that the current primary school timetable presents pupils with lessons that are “too formal, too early.” He will urge a relaxation of the strict regime based on tests, targets and league tables may be the best way to motivate and inspire children. Mr. Bartley believes education is “at a crossroads” after decades of an education system which has been “prescriptive of the curriculum, assessment and testng and latterly of teachng methods.” As one who has taught for 51 years, I can only cheer the statements of Bartley. His comments came just before a debate at the Teachers and Lecturers conference where a royal ...

Happy Little Boredom
2008-03-05 02:14:00
It's a dull week thus far. I do what I can to keep from falling asleep in my chair: I doodle. And since my coworker has a new whiteboard, I can't stop with one page. I draw all over the board, too, scribbling anything from hair-on-fire to a deranged yogi. You know, happy little things like 'at. It may be a terribly quiet week, but this sure beats Bob Ross' trees. That'd be really boring.

American Boredom
2008-02-26 00:00:00
We rented American Gangster last night. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe both were fantastic as always, both are so talented. In fact I found everything about the movie to be very well made but it felt way too long and just a lot of the same old gangster stuff we have already seen so many times. Only in Harlem. This coming from me, a huge gangster film fan. I am surprised, I expected to love this movie but I didn?t. Maybe it was mood but I was bored out of my mind. This review also posted @ Two with a View
MEDIVista won't ease your pain, but will kill boredom

One of the things most people fail to realize about being sick is that sitting in a hospital bed all day can be really, really boring. Luckily, a company called Lincor Solutions has realized that people need something a little more engaging than plain-jane television these days, thus the MEDIVista was created. The basic premise is quite simple: a touchscreen, LCD display is mounted to the

Random Five: Boredom and Motivation
2008-01-26 03:04:00
BoredomWhen least expected, it hits me. Sometimes it is so hard to get out of this rut. How I wish I could take this like how Aldous Huxley describe it when referring to the ?true traveler:??finds boredom rather agreeable than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty - his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure.MotivationI feel so tired emotionally and mentally that I do not want to do anything. Should I take David Harold Fink?s advise on firing up your motivation:You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.However, there are many things that we need to do even if we do not want to do them or do not feel like doing them. Motivation does not impel us to do anything every time. Marx, Darwin and Freud are the three most crashing bores of the Western World. Simplistic popularization of their ideas has thrust our world into a mental straitjacket from which we can only escape by the most anarchic violence. - William Golding (1911-1993) : Belief and Creativity, lecture, 11 Apr, 1980.Surely life, if it be not long, is tedious, since we are forced to call in the assistance of so many trifles to rid us of our time, of that time which never can return. Samuel Johnson (Boswell: Life of Johnson)A dull country magistrate gave Johnson a long tedious account of his exercising his criminal jurisdiction, the result of which was his having sentenced four convicts to transportation. Johnson, in an agony of impatience to get rid of such a companion, exclaimed, "I heartily wish, Sir, that I were a fifth.- James Boswell: Life of Johnson

Boredom = Using WATIR on EntreCard
2007-12-23 00:00:00
I was a bit stressed after spending the finals hours of my OJT working on WATIR scripts for testing so I decided to play around. I looked for something I could automating scripts on and I thought, ‘Why not use it for EntreCard?’ To the newbie, WATIR (pronounced as WATER) stands for “Web Application Testing in Ruby”. Watir is an automated test tool which uses the Ruby scripting language to drive the Internet Explorer web browser. Watir is a toolkit for automated tests to be developed and run against a web browser. Non-developers can also benefit from using WATIR. You can use it to check your emails, delete spam, automatically download torrents (I have a ruby script for this one), etc. Interested yet? Using WATIR and/or Ruby in General can make your computing easier although I won’t be going into details of these just yet. I’ll reserve them for a future post. Note 1: This is what bored developers do when they have too much free time after hours of l...
KILL THE YOUNG - "Proud Sponsors of Boredom"
2007-12-18 22:45:00
Unbearable Boredom
2007-12-13 16:25:00
Unbearable Boredom: A Call to a Magnificent Life - By Annette Colby *** "Life is okay, but I'm bored with it all. I get up, go through my morning habits, and generally keep going. During the day I smile, engage in friendly conversations, attend to the requirements of my work. After work, it's home to watch television, eat, and sleep. In between, there's the movies, gym, music, and shopping. My days are predictable and routine. What is joy? What is excitement? I think I'm missing the meaning of my life."If you ever find yourself dealing with unbearable boredom, treat it not as an undesirable invader, but celebrate the arrival of an important messenger. Without boredom we'd comfortably vegetate in neutral, passing time by doing the same things in the same ways over and over again. Boredom's appearance is a glorious sign of impending growth. New interests, passions, talents, or strengths seek expression. It's a wake-up call indicating a readiness for more: more self-love, self-l...
How to avoid boredom when the lights go off
2007-12-13 08:46:00
Welcome to another "HOW-TO" edition of Hershey's cave.Recently I have been getting a lot of power cuts in the house, which would be fine because we were prepared for it. Unfortunately the inverter doesn't seem to be working. Damn electricians. They could hook the damn thing to my fan but couldn't attach my lights. So basically at night I am thankful for not feeling hot and sweaty(wish I could though...but under different circumstances...ah..crude guy humor) however, I can't see my hair because the room is pitch black.I like my hair and prefer to see it before falling asleep.Anyway,Sometimes when the lights go off I tend to get a little crazy, do goofy things, say funny stuff, make silly noises etc etc. Gets rid of the boredom. Also, if you are in a group, it works wonders to get a few giggles. So what do i do? A lot of things, but lets make a list of what YOU can do. My top 5 favorites.1. I make it sound as if someone is grabbing me, then break some object, preferably a vase or ...

Forex Trading : Forex Boredom
2007-11-23 15:58:00
Watching and waiting is a position. If the thought of this is boring, you may not be cut out to become a successful forex trader.A lot of people ask me ?how many hours do you trade the forex?? and my answer is that I generally trade every trading day from the start of the London Open until the end of the New York session and occasionally beyond. At the weekend I usually carry out various forex studies and I read various publications from other prominent traders.I do think that it is important to explain that although I am trading for a lot of hours, this does not mean that I am in an active trade for all of that time, in fact I am on average in an active trade for very little of that time. Many new and inexperienced traders seem to have the idea that trading is about placing trades, and that the watching and waiting is very boring. I suppose that this is quite a natural assumption, but it is an assumption that is quite incorrect. The biggest part of trading ? and the hardest part for ...

Boredom and painkillers
2007-10-30 14:56:00
When boredom sets in, your senses go numb. you fail miserably in a lot of things for simply your mind is elsewhere.Boredom is similar with painkillers. They don't heal the wound, but rather block our neurons' ending so that they can't send signal of pain to the brain. So, we do not feel the razor sharp scrapping our nerves unlike when we are in pain. In the same manner, boredom inflicts us. When its pangs has totally subdued us; we become insensitive to our surroundings, the presence of others and their feelings, especially at work. What needs to be done? Simply break-out of it! Easier said, than done huh.Steve Winn insightfully wrote:We're terrified of boredom and simultaneously sunk up to our knees in it, a post-"Seinfeld" generation running as hard and frantically as we can to avoid a condition we increasingly regard as inevitable. "I heard you could die of boredom," goes a mordant line in a Neena Beeber play, "but I guess not." "Not so fast. As more and more people seem...

Justice, Moral Reasoning and Boredom
2007-10-23 03:37:00
I mentioned the other day that I'm covering local community college classes while the teacher is away. This involves little other than taking roll and showing movies. The classes that I covered at the college today got to watch a video on justice and morality in political philosophy. I expected it to be pretty dull. I majored in PolySci and know that it takes a very engaging professor to bring political philosophy to life; sadly many of the PolySci profs out there are lacking in the needed skill to prevent one from nodding off. This film turned out to be quite interesting. It consisted of excerpts from a lecture class at Harvard University. The professor doing the lecturing was quite witty, and I (and the Harvard students) frequently laughed out loud. Meanwhile, my classroom was filled with blank expressions. At one point in the film, pi was mentioned. One of the students, confused, looked at the one next to her and said, "Wha's he talkin' 'bout pie for?" to which the response w...

The boredom of a Saturday
2007-10-21 20:52:00
This past week my apartment was put up for sale. So far there have been a few people interested but not as many as I would like, to try to get some more interest yesterday I had an open house. It was rather boring, I just sat in my apartment with no furniture but the chair I was sitting on. Because Nick had basketball and I was his ride there, Nick also had to sit in my empty apartment. :p It actually was not as bad as it sounds as I was able to watch a movie when no one was looking at the apartment which unfortunately was most of the time....So besides having to sit around all day, I did not even get to talk to very many people about the house, well except for Ray.Ray was this older gentleman who showed up about two hours into the open house. He is a mortgage broker and was just stopping by to look around the apartment. After he walked around and looked, I guess he had nothing better to do because he and I then proceeded to have a conversation that spanned everything from computers...
