Lessons for Europe From America?s First Great Depression: Echoes ? Bloomber
2012-01-04 20:08:00
The European Union is in trouble. Some governments are teetering on default, and even German creditworthiness is questioned. Interbank lending in the euro area is increasingly strained. The entire project of European economic integration, wrought through six decades of delicate negotiation, seems at risk of collapse. In the U.S., meanwhile, European leaders are being criticized ...

Michael Hardy of The Boston Globe has reviewed the new Fireproof movie.  My concern isn’t whether Mr. Hardy enjoyed the movie cinematically or how many stars he gave it.  My concern is over one paragraph within his review: Director (Alex) Kendrick seems to care less about his characters’ relationship with each other than their religious fealty.  ...

Contrary to popular opinion, we love newspapers. We once waited up outside our dorm for our first ever published article, a review of Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery. Summer jobs may be at risk for teens - The Boston Globe
2008-04-16 15:36:00
The sour economy is threatening local summer job programs for city teenagers, a decades-old safety net designed to keep youth off the streets and prevent violence during the bloodiest months of the year. This is bad news for a great program, and this quote "A lot of work sites are telling us, 'We can't take as many,' " because entry-level positions that were in the past filled by high school students are being snapped up by college students, said Aaron Tanimoto, the agency's program director. "You can see how the economy is bumping everybody down," isn't good for high school students anywhere. But people are still posting jobs on myfirstpaycheck.com, and businesses are still hiring. Make a resume, get creative, and go out and find that summer job.read more | digg story
Alberto Ibargüen, Knight Foundation CEO and president, Mr. Media Interview,
2008-03-16 20:42:00
With $2.6 billion in assets, the Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is the 22nd largest foundation in the United States. Its mission is the betterment of the 26 communities in which it works and the promotion of journalism as a career and industry nationwide. The latter part of Knight?s mission is particularly challenging at a time when traditional newspapers are shrinking and, in many cases, evaporating. That puts Alberto Ibargüen, CEO of the Knight Foundation and a former publisher of the Miami Herald, at the same crossroads that silent movies encountered with talkies, talkies with radio, radio with television, television with cable, and now traditional print journalism with online reporting, blogs, podcasting, v-logs, streaming media, and so on. Since 1950, the Knight Foundation has invested more than $300 million to advance quality journalism and freedom of expression worldwide. It has a vital interest in seeing journalism survive in whatever form it takes. I int...

Andy MacPhail Q&A With the Boston Globe
2007-11-26 03:59:00
Earlier today, I posted an entry about Andy MacPhail, and through reading up on things before bedtime, I found a quick Q&A he did with a Boston Globe writer, Nick Cafardo. He mainly answered questions about the state of the Orioles, how the team can improve and also life in American League East.Is this a complete rebuilding time for you in your first year in Baltimore?AM: "I think it's a franchise that has economic wherewithal. If you do get a nucleus of players, it's not like they're going to be rolling off and we can't afford them, like a lot of these clubs. It's a tall order and maybe I didn't fully appreciate how difficult the position is. But that doesn't mean we can't do things a lot better than we've been doing them in the past. We really need to make a concerted effort to rebuild the franchise's foundation - scouting, player development - and be as good at those things as we can possibly be."You've run the Twins (championships in 1987 and 1991) and the Cubs; a...

Boston Globe: Ron Paul Not Interested in Third-Party Run
2007-11-11 17:00:00
GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul has built a campaign war chest that has effectively put him in the top-tier of the race in financial terms. He raised $5 million in the third quarter and seems on course to achieve the $12 million target his campaign set for the fourth quarter. On Sunday the donation tracker on his official campaign site showed he has raised almost $8 million of that fourth-quarter target. Speculation has been rife that Paul's real purpose for raising a big campaign fund is not really to pursue the GOP candidacy but rather to finance a third-party run in 2008. Such speculations are fuelled by the fact that Paul has previously run as a third-party candidate. He was the presidential candidate of the Libertarian Party in 1988. But at a campaign stop in New Hampshire, where he is rising in voter preference polls, Paul tried to lay to rest such speculation. According to the Boston Globe, Paul maintains that he is "not interested" in a third party run. Texas Congr...
Boston Globe Notes: Schilling, Kuroda
2007-10-29 16:36:00
A few notes from recent Boston Globe articles... Curt Schilling recently posted at Sons of Sam Horn regarding his future.  Nothing has changed - he'd still like a one-year deal from the Red Sox but failing that he wants to join a winner or play for a team with young pitchers to tutor.  He mentions that "dollars will be a significant factor" if he leaves Boston.  The SOSH threads can be found here and here. Sounds like the Cubs were more than just interested in Hiroki Kuroda last winter - they may have made an offer.  He considered a deal with the Cubs but stayed in Japan for personal reasons.  The Cubs and Mariners are considered the top contenders for him this winter. showad();

Boston Globe: Extensive Analysis of Ron Paul, His Message and His Youthful
2007-09-27 18:46:00
Late on a balmy Friday night in Wicker Park, a gentrifying neighborhood just northwest of the Loop, a small tribe of 20-somethings gathers outside a corner bar. Their leader, a petite, energetic 25-year-old named Meghann Walker, hands out leaflets to people heading inside. "Do you guys know Ron Paul is going to be in town tomorrow?" Walker asks a short-haired young woman in jeans and flip-flops. "There'll be a lot of good people there, that's for sure." "Cool," the woman replies. Walker, a waitress and anthropology student who lives in Chicago, cried on Election Night 2004, crushed that Democrat John Kerry had failed to unseat President Bush. Last year, deeply disillusioned with the Iraq war and with politicians of both par ties who had failed to stop it, she began a political odyssey that transformed her into a libertarian Republican. Now, she spends "every free moment" campaigning for Paul, a Texas congressman who vows that if he's elected president he'll abolish the Inter...

Red Sox Rookie, Clay Buchholz, Tosses a No-No [J. Mark English]
2007-09-02 06:50:00
Here with the story is Howard Ulman of the Boston Globe:Before Clay Buchholz made his major league debut two weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox told him he was going back to the minors -- even if he pitched a no-hitter. Got to keep the kid now. The 23-year-old rookie pitched that no-hitter in just his second outing, using a dazzling three-pitch assortment of fastballs, curves and changeups to beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-0 Saturday night."There's no going back to Triple-A," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.Buchholz was called up from Pawtucket on Saturday when teams were allowed to expand their 25-man rosters. The crowd stood through the entire ninth inning, cheering every pitch and taking pictures of the righty in his windup and as he paced around the mound. He started the inning by striking out Brian Roberts on a 93 mph fastball. A groan rose from the stands when Corey Patterson hit a line drive to center with one out, but Coco Crisp easily moved over to catch it.Buchholz started N...
Boston Globe: Ron Paul is the Ralph Nader of the right
2007-09-01 16:52:00
SO FAR IN Campaign 2008, the one contender who seems to have generated the most grassroots excitement isn't really a contender at all. Ron Paul, the Republican congressman from Texas, doesn't have much chance of winning. When the mainstream media have noticed Paul at all, they have largely treated him as a curiosity or even a nuisance: After the first Republican debate in May, a Washington Post editorial suggested that the debates would be much better if they weren't "cluttered" by such nobodies. Perhaps the most media notice he attracted was when, in the second debate, he seemed to suggest that American foreign policy was responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks. This comment quickly became an opportunity for patriotic point-scoring by Rudy Giuliani, and led some GOP operatives to call for Paul's exclusion from future debates. Yet Paul has a following that no other candidate can match in sheer dedication. His impressive performance in Internet polls has been supplemented with two...

Boston Globe: Why is the Mainstream Media Trying to Marginalize Ron Paul?
2007-08-22 03:26:00
Foon_Rhee: Welcome, everyone, to the politics chat. I'll start answering the questions already submitted and look forward to others. Walpole_Dem__Guest_: The other parts of the country do not know that Romney used his tenure as governor as a stepping-stone and forgot the little guy in Massachusetts. He does not understand that seniors are struggling to make ends meet; we have huge number of citizens in the state who are losing their homes, just look at the number of foreclosures. As an active Democrat all my life, I can't believe that US citizens are struggling so bad, and we NEED to clear up Washington. Ted Kennedy and John Kerry are so frustrated by this administration. Foon_Rhee: I don't see an actual question in this query, but let me try to address it by saying that we have addressed Governor Romney's tenure on Beacon Hill in our Romney project and in other coverage. We and other media outlets will continue to scrutinize his record and what he says on the campaign trail a...
