Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 9/28

you're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin',and we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive.Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive. Bee Gees 1977 {mp3remote}http://ianbethune.co-m/stayinalive.mp3{/mp3remote} The Boston Red Sox are still alive in the AL playoff race with their 6-1 win last night over the Chicago White Sox. The thanks to their friends in the AL East, the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles, the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays were unable to clinch spots in the playoffs. It also goes to a strong pitching performance from Clay Buchholz as well as great nights at the plate from Victor Martinez, David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre. And we can't leave out Marco Scutaro who chipped in with three hits as well. Buchholz was in a nice little groove against the ChiSox. He had all of his pitches working and most importantly was throwing strikes.  And when you do that, good things happen. He only al...
I swept the Boston Red Sox out of playoff contention and all I got was this
2010-09-06 08:05:00
Perhaps if I had already accepted that all the White Sox could be was a very good spoiler team--a fate the Tigers resigned themselves to somewhere around mid-July--I could take more joy in delivering a catastrophic blow to the Red Sox playoff hopes. I've never had much hostility toward Boston teams outside of Rajon Rondo in the '09 NBA Playoff, but a lot of people I know seem to detest them and their fans, so yeah...screw 'em, I guess. Still, the thrill of back-to-back sweeps for the Chicago White Sox, who really seem to have hit a bit of a stride again (how else can you explaing Sunday's five-walk ninth inning?), is tempered a hell of a lot by the fact that they just can't seem to do anything to gain ground on the Minnesota Twins; who ceded exactly a half game to the Sox during their 6-game streak. Worse yet, the Twinkies just swept through the last difficult series on their schedule save for their Sept. 14-16 showdown versus the Sox; which looks more and more like the a...

Peter Golenbock may write Yankees histories, but he's rooting for the Rays
2010-04-12 22:25:00
Mickey Mantle, image via Wikipedia By BOB ANDELMAN Sportswriter Peter Golenbock is one of my heroes, a guy I want to be like in many ways when I grow up. For now, however, I?ll settle for just being to call him a friend. The major characteristic I admire about Peter is his ability to be working constantly. He?s always writing a new book, always engaged in an envious research project. Actually, more than one. As a guy who also makes his living writing books, it drives me nuts. Let me give you an example. The first time Peter was on my show, he was promoting his hotly controversial first stab at fiction, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel. But while he was setting the New York media community on fire with wild tales of the Mick getting up to bat with Joe D?s gal, Marilyn Monroe, he was already hot at work with actor Tony Curtis on his autobiography and on a history of Brooklyn. When I had him back to talk about those books, he was chomping at the bit to talk about his George Steinb...

Boston Red Sox vs Oakland A's
2009-04-17 11:46:00
As luck would have it, the Red Sox were in town the two days before the awards ceremony. I had wanted to go to both games, but only managed to make it to one.Getting to the Oakland Coliseum is very convenient. The Bay Area Rapid Transit stops right in front of the stadium...and right in front of our hotel. It was only about $3 and a short 20 minute ride over.Ticket prices are also very reasonable. The most expensive seat in the house was only $55. I would have purchased one of those, but they were all sold out. I had to settle for the $40 seats, which still weren't too bad.It has been nearly four years since I've been to a Major League Baseball game (check out my post from 2005 and you'll recognize a former Saipan celebrity). The two or three games I went to at Fenway when I was a kid are some of the best memories I have from my childhood. It was great to sort of relive them at Tuesday's game. Here are some photos:Big Papi about to take a monster swing. That's team captai...

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 12/27
2008-12-27 16:00:00
It’s been a few days since we’ve taken a look at the Boston Red Sox news and as you would expect it’s light due to the Christmas holiday. Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe says the Red Sox are considering Plan B after losing out on Mark Teixeira. Within the article, she says the Red Sox are still talking to Scott Boras about a return for Jason Varitek. The recession has hurt the value of the New York Times’ stake in the Red Sox. A potential Red Sox spring training site in Bonita Springs, FL is probably a longshot. Even without Mark Teixeira, the Red Sox offense should be one of the league’s best. Nagging Boston Red Sox Questions...
2008-12-27 11:27:00
A Saturday morning hello from good old (not) me. The Boston Globe ran an article which clearly and point by point highlighted the questions that the Red Sox are facing right now. With their permission, I'd like to list them with my comments (in parenthesis) following each one. OK? Here we go...1) Find a starting and a back-up catcher. (Peter here...this is essential. Boston needs TWO catchers...I'd like Jason Varitek to be our number one guy but play less games. He'll get his hitting stroke back...I just know it). 2) Find a starting pitcher? (This is a tough one. Our rotation as it stands now is a great one, right up until the number five guy. That rotation would be Beckett, Lester, Matsuzaka, Wakefield and...Buchholz?...Masterson? I say no to Masterson...he's much more valuable coming out of the bullpen and inducing ground ball outs, especially to right-handed hitters. Buchholz would be better off with another half year or year at the minor league level. When he harnesses all h...
